Beginning Sunday, September 4, with an Introduction, Highland Presbyterian Church will begin a 31-week exploration of the Bible. This is a whole-congregation experience where Sunday school classes, small groups, worship services, families, and hopefully every individual will be on the same page in a chronological journey through the Bible. Whether you feel somewhat familiar or very familiar with the scriptures of the Old and New Testaments, this will be a rewarding journey. In my last pastoral call the congregation used The Story and since it was a high point for them I expect that it will be for Highland and for the other four local congregations who are also participating. Churches in our Susquehanna Parish Ministry Group who are also doing The Story are: Fallston, Good Shepherd, Grove, Chestnut Grove, and Highland. Their pastors and I are meeting together for planning, sharing, and we may even do a Pulpit Swap a couple times. As we make our way through the Bible, we will become more familiar with God’s “upper story” and how it intersects with our “lower stories.” As I preach through the Bible using The Story I will be most interested in conveying God’s over-arching will and ways. By understanding God’s overall trajectory of redemption as read through the whole of scripture we are able to make decisions about some of the particular verses, passages, stories, laws, etc. By knowing God’s overall revelation/story we can be better theologians. This is a great time to invite a friend or neighbor to accompany you to worship and Sunday school. People come to church most often through the invitation of a friend. Need I say more? Let’s all go forward together leaving no one behind! Peace and Wonder! Pastor Ray

HIGHLAND MEMORIAL PRAYER GARDEN AND COLUMBARIUM

The columbarium and memorial prayer garden projects have continued to move forward this summer. Currently, there are 5 couples who have expressed a definite commitment to purchasing a niche in the columbarium and 3 of those have made their payment in full. As a reminder, the cost per niche is reduced to $1,750.00 each until November 15, 2016. After that date the price of each niche will be $2,000.00. If you have any questions about the columbarium or wish to purchase a niche, please contact Claudia Scarborough. The funding status of the memorial prayer garden poses more of a challenge at this time. Dave Thompson has generously donated considerable resources already in the areas of materials and plants for this project and when it is under way he also will be donating some of the labor. Currently, 9 members have given gifts and pledges of $7,855.00 with an additional $3,921 coming from memorial gifts. Beyond these contributions from Dave Thompson and the 9 members, $15,000.00 is still needed to complete the memorial prayer garden project. In addition to presenting information about the memorial prayer garden to our congregation, letters explaining this project and soliciting donations have been sent to individuals who no longer attend Highland Presbyterian Church but who have relatives buried in our cemetery. Again, if you have questions regarding the memorial prayer garden or wish to make a financial contribution please contact Claudia Scarborough. With both projects your prayerful consideration and contributions are deeply appreciated. The columbarium and the memorial prayer garden will add immeasurably to the beauty, legacy, and sanctity of our cemetery. Committee: Chairman, Pete McCallum, Rachel Ayres, Ian Fallon, Eugene Jones, Marilyn Sams, Claudia Scarborough, Wilson Tharpe, David Thompson and Pastor Ray Meute.

This rendering shows three Columbarium units, but the plan is to start with one unit and expand as needed.

The Body of Christ serving others . . .

Highland Church Family ~

As we enter into Fall at Highland, a fresh season of new beginnings, please read, and perhaps meditate upon this prayer, “You Know What I Need”, inspired 14 years ago, early in my writing ministry. I feel the prayer is an appropriate one as our congregation begins reading THE STORY together, and continues in our pastoral search, but also as we launch into our new music/worship ministry, and continue with our new healing prayer ministry and all of our endeavors as a church family. As a country on the precipice of an election in a divided nation, our hearts surely need to be focused, as one, on our Lord and Savior, the King of Kings, and Lord of all nations. What better way to begin than through a heart of prayer. Prayers and blessings, Carolyn Patrinicola Highland Prayer Fellowship

You Know What I Need

All of You

and none of me - You alone do see what needs to be. Yes, take this self

and repair its flaws,

smoothing away by Your

power, those grooves of distress, then press

me into Your forgiving goodness.

Col. 1:9-17

Piano Dedication Recital on their new

Yahama Avant Grand Piano

featuring internationally renowned

Petronel Malan Friday, September 23, 2016

at 7:00 PM A free-will Offering will be received.

"Formidable…dizzying…magical.” These words from New York reviewer Harris Goldsmith vividly illustrate pianist Petronel Malan’s uniquely captivating style. Indeed, as a multiple Grammy® nominee and gold medalist of several international piano competitions, Petronel continues to enthrall audiences worldwide. On Friday, September 23rd at 7:00 PM, we will welcome Ms. Malan to our church in a dedication recital for our new Yamaha Avant Grand Piano. She will perform selections from Scarlatti, Mozart, and Rachmaninoff, and will be joined at the end of the recital by fellow pianist, Matthew Mainster, for a special duo encore.

Though Ms. Malan resides in the United States, she continues strong ties to her native South Africa. She received the “Rapport/City Press Prestige Award” as one of the “10 Most Inspirational Women in South Africa.” She was also awarded a 2013 "Kanna" prize for best live classical concert, and a Fiesta Award for excellence in the Arts. She is a frequent speaker and promoter for classical music in schools, and music scholarships in her name are awarded annually to promising young musicians.

Beginning Sunday, September 11, 2016 ~

Highland Presbyterian Church will begin a 31-week journey through the Bible with a Kick-off message from the pastor! This is a whole congregational experience for children through adults. This is also a fabulous time to invite friends and neighbors to be a part of our mutual journey. Sermons will be tied in with the weekly chapter from the book so you will be more than ready for the message on Sunday. All Sunday School classes will be participating in THE STORY, if you would consider leading a Small Group to do this study (curriculum is on hand), please speak to Valerie Matta or Pastor Ray. Visit the table in the Fellowship Area TODAY or on one of the next few Sundays to purchase your books!!
