1. Introduction

This record book for grade 1 consists of assessment record forms for all the syllabuses and all

terms. It includes Informal Observation Checklists, Formal Assessment Class List and Formal

Assessment Record Forms.

2. How to assess

2.1 Informal Continuous Assessment

Informal continuous assessment is done on a daily basis, throughout the term. The

observation information for informal continuous assessment will be recorded on informal

observation checklists. The teacher should make sure that every child is informally assessed

and the observation is recorded on the checklists.

Informal Observation Checklist consists of the components and competencies of the subject. It

is conducted during lessons, through careful observation of learners’ engagement in lesson

activities as well as their written work. Informal continuous ssessment must be part of the

lesson planning and clear assessment criteria must be set. It is recorded after a series of

lessons when an understanding is acquired. A teacher can indicate observation using a tick

(√) to indicate that the learner has mastered the competency or cross (x) to indicate that the

competency is not mastered (no marks should be entered in the informal continuous

assessment checklists).

2.2 Formal Continuous Assessment

Formal Assessment is normally done after the conclusion of a theme, topic, skill or

components. Teachers can give short written tests, quizzes or oral test over the term. These

assessments must be carefully planned and conducted according to the criterion-based

descriptors on the letter grades. Please note that formal continuous assessment activities like

short tests or quizzes should be spread over the term and written during normal classes. This

means that no Junior Primary classes (Grades 1 to 3) will have a "test week" or a "test time

table" during which learners are required to study for tests.

Formal continuous assessment marks will be recorded first on a class list and then be

summarised on a formal continuous assessment record forms. These marks are recorded on

class lists at least after three weeks of teaching and thereafter; there will only be one class list

(each term) in all the subjects. The teacher should make sure that there is the same number

of marks for each learner in each column on the class list.

Marks should be awarded and then converted to ten (10) for formal continuous assessment in

all the subjects and for all the various:

skills

components

Themes/topics/topics of integration

Page 5: MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, ARTS AND CULTURE · MINISTRY OF EDUCATION, ARTS AND CULTURE JUNIOUR PRIMARY PHASE FOR IMPLEMENTATION: 2015 ... It includes Informal Observation Checklists,

2

At the end of each trimester the average marks on the class list for different skills, components

and themes/topics/ topics of integration will be calculated. See an example on the Formal

Assessment Class List. Average marks are then rounded as follows:

9.5 – 10 = 10 marks

8.5 – 9.4 = 9 marks

7.5 – 8.4 = 8 marks

6.5 – 7.4 = 7 marks

5.5 – 6.4 = 6 marks

4.5 – 5.4 = 5 marks

3.5 – 4.4 = 4 marks

2.5 – 3.4 = 3 marks

1.5 - 2.4 = 2 marks

0.5 – 1.4 = 1 mark

0 - 0.4 = 0 mark

The average marks should be transferred to the Continuous Assessment Record Forms in the

appropriate columns as full marks 0-10 (without decimal fractions). See an example on the

Formal Assessment Record form.

The summative assessment grade for each term will be the average percentages of these

(skills/components), and the promotion grade for the end of the year will be the summative

grades of the third trimester only.

Please note:

Final marks for the end of the year are the marks of the last term only

3. Grade Descriptors

Grade % Range Competency descriptions

A 80%+ Achieved competencies exceptionally well. The learner is

outstanding in all areas of competency.

B 70-79% Achieved competencies very well. The learner’s achievement

lies substantially above average requirements and the learner is

highly proficient in most areas of competency.

C 60-69% Achieved competencies well. The learner has mastered the

competencies satisfactorily in unknown situations and contexts.

D 50-59% Achieved competencies satisfactorily. The learner’s

achievement corresponds to average requirements. The learner

may be in need of learning support in some areas.

E 40-49% Achieved the minimum number of competencies to be

considered competent. The learner may not have achieved all

the competencies, but the learner’s achievement is sufficient to

exceed the minimum competency level. The learner is in need of

learning support in most areas.

U 0-39% Ungraded. The learner has not been able to reach a minimum

level of competency, even with extensive help from the teacher.

The learner is seriously in need of learning support.

The Meaning of grades

In the Junior Primary phase, assessment is Criterion-referenced. This means that, when letter

grades are awarded, it is essential that they reflect the learner's actual level of achievement in

relation to the Competencies. Letter grades may be awarded directly or indirectly. When a

letter grade is awarded directly, the teacher assesses the level of achievement of the

competencies and awards the appropriate letter grade. Letter grades are awarded indirectly

when a mark is used and then converted to the letter grade. Marks must be related to criteria

for assessing learners’ achievement in the same way as when awarding letter grades directly.

NB: It is an absolute MUST to consult the syllabuses in the different subjects very well when

planning lessons, so you know exactly what should be assessed.
