Aiming for Calm, Cool and CollectedWhile the Loons had what some would deem a boring yet balanced game on Friday night, it was quite the opposite for their next opponent, the Colorado Rapids. The Rapids set the tone early with a Kellyn Acosta snipe and had Sporting Kansas City frazzled and on their heels from the frenzied pressure that followed. The tables turned in the second half when the Rapids lost Danny Wilson and then Jack Price to red cards and SKC put two in the back of the net. Colorado tied it up in the 81st minute, but Graham Zusi pushed Sporting ahead with his stoppage time goal. The Rapids not only lost its sense of urgency in the second half, but Wilson and Price for Wednesday night’s game. The Loons will have to keep their cool against a Colorado side that relies on defending deep and springing out on the counter. If MNUFC can stay composed and finish chances in the final third, they will be well on their way, especially with a healthy Luis Amarilla in the mix.

One is Better Than NoneA late kickoff could not stop the Florida heat and humidity from turning this tilt between the top two teams in Group D into another steamy affair late Friday night. Minnesota United welcomed the return of captain Osvaldo Alonso to the lineup, while Real Salt Lake would lose Albert Rusnak to an injury after just 34 minutes. The teams spent the bulk of the evening in the midfield, with neither able to mount consistent pressure on goal and each mustering 10 shots a piece with only five total on target. A late shift towards MNUFC was not enough for the Loons to come out on top and the teams would have to satisfy themselves with a point each in a scoreless draw.

MNUFC GAME NOTES

• Minnesota and Colorado split the season series in 2019, with the home team winning a 1-0 game in each meeting.

• Colorado will be without midfielder and captain Jack Price and defender Danny Wilson after both were sent off in the Rapids’ game against Sporting KC.

• MNUFC is tied with Columbus Crew SC for most points in MLS with 10 and sits atop the Western Conference rankings.

• Columbus is just ahead of MNUFC in the Supporters’ Shield standings with a goal differential of +7 to Minnesota’s +6.

• Minnesota’s 0-0 draw against Real Salt Lake was the team’s first draw since September 29, 2019 against LAFC, and first scoreless draw since September 22, 2019 against Portland Timbers.

• Down to nine players against SKC, Colorado’s Jonathan Lewis scored an unlikely equalizer to make it 2-2, but a deflected shot by Graham Zusi in stoppage time gave SKC a 3-2 win.

• With losses to Real Salt Lake and Sporting KC in their first two games, the Rapids have been all but eliminated from the MLS Is Back Tournament.

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES

MLS is Back: MNUFC Hold on to Point in Scoreless Draw against RSLA late kick could not stop the Florida heat and humidity from turning this tilt between the top two teams in Group D into another steamy affair late Friday night. Minnesota United welcomed the return of captain Osvaldo Alonso to the lineup, while Real Salt Lake would lose Albert Rusnak to an injury after just 34 minutes. The teams would spend the bulk of the evening in the midfield, with neither able to mount consistent pressure on goal and each mustering 10 shots a piece with only five total on target. A late shift towards MNUFC was not enough for the Loons to come out on top and the teams would have to satisfy themselves with a point each in a scoreless draw.

MLS is Back: Colorado Rapids PreviewAnother team that saw a legendary goalkeeper leave at the end of last year, Colorado endured several fallow years during the twilight of Tim Howard’s career only to see a resurgence midway through 2019 when Robin Fraser took the reins and simplified the schemes. Last year, the Rapids absorbed opponents’ attacks in order to launch rapid counterattacks commanded by Jack Price’s continued midfield brilliance and finished off by a cadre of speedy, young wingers. Add to that a nigh-unbelievable dominance on set pieces (17 goals) and the second half of Colorado’s season showed real promise.

The question prior to the start of 2020 was whether the honeymoon period could blossom into sustained quality and, up until the season was suspended, the answer was a tentative yes. Along with fellow Group D teams RSL and MNUFC, The Rapids took six points from two games, including a dramatic win in the season opener at D.C. United when Jonathan Lewis scored in the 92nd minute. With that kind of hot start, Colorado have to like their chances as a dark horse in a tournament format that will likely reward teams who keep it simple.

Head Coach Adrian Heath on starting the season with 10 points after four games and his thoughts on the group“If you split it up into two, I think we started exceptionally well the first two games. And I look at the performances of Portland [Timbers] and San Jose [Earthquakes] of the last two weeks, puts our 5-2 win against [San Jose] in a little bit of perspective. We got a result against [Sporting Kansas City] where we didn’t play particularly well other than the last 20 to 25 minutes and I thought we were a little bit better the other night. Still haven’t the highs of the first two games but we always talk about using chunks of the season and we spoke about having ten points after the first five games. We would have taken that [in March]. Now we’ve got ten points after four games. It’s a game we are capable of winning against Colorado on [Wednesday] and if we do that and we end up with 13 points from that game, it’s been a terrific start.”

Heath on the first shutout of the season against Real Salt Lake“The one thing I expect out of all the games is our willingness to defend. I don’t just mean the back four, I mean the four up front and the two up top. They’ve shown a great appetite for the hard work and in these conditions, it’s been terrific to see. We put video together of people running back 60 yards just to get back to the goal side of the ball and in these conditions, that’s not easy to do. Their attitude to making tough decisions where I’m going to have to make the effort to get back and help the team out has been fantastic.”

Midfielder Robin Lod on his relationship with backline“It’s been great. The whole team is defending really well. We are close to each other and everybody helps each other. We are defending really good and together but I think there’s a lot to improve when we get the ball and have some better attack for sure.”

Defender Chase Gasper on adjusting to life in the bubble and training conditions“It’s been great. I was definitely pleasantly surprised; the accommodations are awesome, the food awesome and, it’s not ideal circumstances, but when you take things into perspective we got the greatest job in the world so you can’t complain. Just happy to spend time with my teammates, really get to know guys you didn’t know much about and just try to make the most of it.”

Gasper on preparing for Colorado in the final game of the group stage“It’s definitely going to be a challenging game. Although they haven’t gotten the best results lately, they’re a great team, they’re always a challenge to play against and like you said, there’s going to be that added motivation to come out of Orlando with some sort of points. We’re going to have to prepare like it’s a door-die game, because we need the points. Nothing is guaranteed right now so we’re going to prepare like it’s a do-or-die game and play our best.”

2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMLS IS BACK COMPETITION FORMAT

Major League Soccer returns with all 26 MLS clubs competing in the MLS is Back Tournament at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida beginning July 8. Group stage games will count in the MLS regular season standings and the tournament winner will earn a spot in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League, replacing the berth previously awarded to the MLS regular season points leader in the conference opposite of the 2020 Supporters’ Shield winner.

Group assignments for each of the 26 teams were determined through a live draw on June 11, with Minnesota United being drawn into Group D alongside Real Salt Lake, Sporting Kansas City and the Colorado Rapids. Similar to a FIFA World Cup format, the tournament will feature a continuous schedule of games nearly every day, with games beginning at 8 a.m., 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. CDT. The majority of the games will be played in the evening. Each team will play three group stage games, with those results counting in the 2020 MLS regular season standings. After 16 consecutive days of group stage games, the top two teams from each group along with the four best third-place finishers will move on to the knockout stage. The knockout stage will include Round-of-16, Quarterfinals, and Semifinals rounds, as well as the Championship match on August 11. Games tied at the end of regulation in the knockout phase will proceed directly to a penalty kick shootout.

In addition to games that count in the regular season standings and the Champions League berth, players will have the opportunity to earn additional bonuses as part of a $1.1 million prize pool.

The substitution limit for the tournament will follow the new protocol set by the IFAB and allow five substitutions per game. In addition, teams may name up to 23 players on each official gameday roster. Also, the Professional Referees Organization (PRO) will have access to video review for all games.

Upon completion of the MLS is Back Tournament, MLS plans to continue its regular season with a revised schedule in home markets, followed by the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs and the 25th MLS Cup. The schedule will be developed at a later date. The final number of games and the schedule for the remainder of the 2020 MLS regular season will be announced in the coming weeks.

The MLS medical department and the league’s infectious disease experts have developed a comprehensive COVID-19 testing plan which will be implemented for the entire MLS is Back Tournament. In addition, MLS will make a contribution of serology (antibody) tests to Central Florida residents beginning June 18.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.

After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.

The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.

As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.

The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and teams in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.

Starting in 2019, the league adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on to the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.
