MNUFC Opens Allianz FieldMinnesota United will play its long-anticipated first game at Allianz Field on Saturday. After claiming three wins in their first five road games, the Loons enter their new home to face struggling New York City FC. With four draws and a loss to start the year, NYCFC is struggling in the post-David Villa era. Since losing to the Loons in September of last year, NYCFC has won just two of their last 11 games. The Loons will look to continue their dominant home form from last year and will want to perform well for the hometown supporters, who will do their part to make their new stadium a difficult place for visiting teams to play. The inaugural game at Allianz Field will be historic day, and MNUFC will be highly motivated to christen the stadium with three points.
Loons Close Our Road Trip with 2-1 WinMinnesota United finished off its season-opening road trip with an emphatic 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls. Despite missing leading attackers Darwin Quintero and Miguel Ibarra, the Loons shocked the reigning Supporters’ Shield winners. They took the lead in the 34th minute as Angelo Rodriguez set up Abu Danladi for his first goal of the 2019 season. MNUFC doubled its total five minutes after halftime as Rodriguez’ deflected shot fell kindly for substitute Romario Ibarra, who volleyed home the eventual game-winner. Red Bulls were able to get one back off a rebound following a corner kick, but the Loons’ defenders stood tall to preserve the lead, allowing them to claim three points heading into Allianz Field.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
• This is the first game Minnesota United will play in Allianz Field. The privately-financed $250-million stadium broke ground in December of 2016 and completed construction in February of 2019.
• This is Minnesota’s first home game on grass since October 29, 2016. Brent Kallman is the only player currently on the Loons’ roster who played in that game.
• This will be the first home game the Loons have played in Saint Paul since May 21, 2013. MNUFC played a U.S. Open Cup game against the Des Moines Menace at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.
• MNUFC finished off its season-opening road trip with a 2-1 win over the New York Red Bulls last week. The Loons claimed nine of a possible 15 points to start the season.
• Abu Danladi scored his first goal of the season in his first start of the year against New York.
• Romario Ibarra scored his second goal of the year, after coming on as a substitute at halftime. Both of the Ecuador international’s goals in 2019 have been game-winners.
• Romario is one of six players in the league with two game-winning goals.
• Angelo Rodriguez provided his first assist of the 2019 campaign against Red Bulls last weekend.
• Defender Ike Opara and goalkeeper Vito Mannone earned spots on the MLS Team of the Week for Week 6 for their efforts in the Loons’ win. This is the first time either of these players have made the Team of the Week as members of MNUFC.
• Last week was the first MNUFC game this year that did not have a penalty kick awarded to either team.
• Neither the Loons nor the Red Bulls were carded last week.
• Jan Gregus’ 14 corner kicks are the tenth highest individual total in MLS.
• With 11 goals through the first five games, Minnesota has the fourth-highest tally in the league.
• The Loons have scored on 18% of their shots, the third-most efficient scoring rate in MLS.
• New York City FC has not won a game in 2019.
• MNUFC and NYCFC met in the Orlando City Invitational, with the Loons claiming a 1-0 win during the preseason tournament.
• NYCFC goalkeeper Sean Johnson is one of six goalkeepers with multiple clean sheets already in 2019.
• Minnesota’s last home win came against NYCFC on September 29, 2018. Angelo Rodriguez scored both of the Loons’ goals in the 2-1 result.

MNUFC GAME NOTES
2015 MINNESOTA UNITED FC GOAL MAPMINNESOTA UNITED NEWS AND NOTES
Defensive Duo of Opara and Mannone on MLS Team of the WeekMinnesota United closed out its season-opening road trip with a 2-1 win over New York Red Bulls, thanks to a great team performance. A few individuals stood out for their efforts as defender Ike Opara and goalkeeper Vito Mannone have been named to the MLS Team of the Week for Week 6 of the season. Both Opara and Mannone are making their first appearances on the team since joining MNUFC.
Opara locked down the middle of the new-look defensive line for MNUFC, and was on hand for several big plays to preserve the team’s lead. The 2016 Defender of the Year had four tackles, four clearances and three interceptions in the game, while also preventing the Red Bulls’ top scorers from threatening his goal.
Mannone earned a spot on the bench for the Team of the Week while claiming his third win of the season. He made five saves, including a quick reaction on the near-post just before halftime to keep MNUFC in front. The goalkeeper also made a handful crucial catches on threatening crosses to prevent shots before they could be taken, frustrating the Red Bull attackers.
Defender Chase Gasper Visits City View Elementary SchoolMinnesota United’s rookie Chase Gasper has been actively involved in the local community since being drafted earlier this year. On Sunday, April 7, Gasper attended a soccer tournament held at City View Elementary School in Minneapolis. La Liga Revolucion, a local futsal soccer league from Minneapolis, was holding several championship matches for age groups U6-U13. La Liga Revolucion held an opening ceremony prior to each championship match where the MNUFC defender was announced as a special guest and greeted both teams before each kickoff.
Chase was blown away after witnessing the youngsters’ passion and intensity in the championship matches from age group U7 and U8: “It was so back and forth, I had no idea who would win!” During his time at the soccer tournament, Chase was given the honor of hand trophies to the aspiring younger generation.
One player in particular caught Gasper’s eye, after learning his nickname was “Messi.” During the trophy ceremony, Chase gave “Messi” the MVP award after scoring three goals in the championship final. Before departing the tournament, Gasper spoke to La Liga Revolucion director about “Messi,” saying “he’s going to make it through the ranks one day and I’ll see him at the academy.”
Adrian Heath on His Excitement for the First Game at Allianz Field“This is going to be home now. It’s like something that was a dream, now has become the reality. I don’t want to put a dampener on it, but we’ve just got to do our job. I’m sure it will be an incredible day for everybody — it will be an even better day if we win. As I said to the players before this week’s training started, let’s concentrate on what we’ve got to do. Not all the peripheral stuff. We’ve got a job to do, we’ve got to go and try to get three points.”
Forward Angelo Rodriguez on what he is expecting from NYCFC“We know the team is strong. I have faced them several times and have been fortunate enough to score against them but I think this weekend we must enter the game fully concentrated and if God allows it, we will win.”
Defender Brent Kallman on the Five Away Games to Start the Season“It feels really good to get those points on the road, it takes character, it’s not easy to get done and last weekend was a really good example of that. It wasn’t pretty but the guys had grit, determination and fight to get it done. I think we’ve proven to each other that we can do that early on which will pay off going down the line and we’re going to be confident on all the road games going forward.”
MNUFC Announce Food and Beverage Program at Allianz FieldFrom the beginning, Minnesota United has understood that the food and beverage program at Allianz Field would be second only to the game itself in terms of importance. With this in mind, the food and beverage program has been built around themes that resonate with Minnesota’s heritage, the stadium’s Saint Paul location, and the diverse culture of soccer and the game’s fanbase. Through a theme of “street food” and with an emphasis on local craft beers through its Black & Brew Collection, Allianz Field will provide a food experience that’s global in scope, local in focus and always dynamic.
MNUFC and Ebbets Launch the “L’Etoile Du Nord” CollectionMinnesota United has teamed up with Ebbets Field Flannels, the American vintage athletic apparel brand, for a limited edition capsule collection that drops on Friday, April 12 in celebration of the Allianz Field Inaugural Home Opener on Saturday, April 13 when Minnesota United FC hosts NYCFC at 4:00 p.m. CT.

Minnesota United FC plays in North America’s top professional soccer league, Major League Soccer (MLS). The league features 24 teams from across the United States and Canada.
After a successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup in 1994, the United States Soccer Federation (USSF) founded MLS to bring a top-level soccer league back to the country for the first time since 1984, when the original NASL folded. The league was set to begin play in 1996 with 10 teams: Colorado Rapids, Columbus Crew (SC), D.C. United, Dallas Burn (FC Dallas), Kansas City Wiz (Sporting Kansas City), Los Angeles Galaxy, New England Revolution, NY/NJ MetroStars (New York Red Bulls), San Jose Clash (Earthquakes) and Tampa Bay Mutiny.
The league’s first game was played on April 6, 1996 as the San Jose Clash played D.C. United in front of 31,000 fans at Spartan Stadium. The league drew large crowds in its opening season, pulling star power from around North America and building on the excitement of the 1994 FIFA World Cup.
As MLS has continued to grow, clubs have begun moving out of shared American football venues and into soccer-specific stadium, led by Columbus Crew (SC), who moved into the soccer-specific MAPFRE Stadium in 1999. Currently, 20 teams play in soccer-specific venues.
The league is split into the Eastern and Western Conferences. Each team plays 34 games during the season. Teams play all conference opponents twice, once at home and once on the road, and each team in the other conference once, with an even balance of home and away games. The top seven teams in each conference at the end of the year qualify for the MLS Cup Playoffs.
Starting in 2019, the league has adopted a new single-elimination format for the entirety of the MLS Cup Playoffs. The top seven teams in each conference qualify for postseason, with the regular-season conference champions receiving a first-round bye. The second through seventh seeds will play the opening round games, with the highest seed hosting games throughout the tournament. The winners will move on to join the one-seed teams in the conference semifinals. The winner of each conference championship will move on the the MLS Cup Final. The team with the best regular season record will host the final.

At just 26 years old, Calvo has the potential to be a familiar name in Minnesota for years to come. Whether playing at left back or center back, the MNUFC captain does well to stretch the pitch and create imbalances in the attack. During the 2018 season, Calvo started 26 of 26 games played, but missed five games due to international duty with Costa Rica. Calvo also started and played a full 90 minutes for Costa Rica in their 2018 FIFA World Cup Group E opener against Serbia, a 1-0 defeat, and came off the bench in a 2-0 loss to Brazil.
#15 MICHAEL BOXALL | DEFENDERHeight: 6’2” Weight: 200 Birthdate: 8/18/1988 Hometown: Auckland, New ZealandPrevious Club: SuperSport United Acquired: Signed 7/12/2017
New Zealand international Boxall joined MNUFC on July 12, 2017 after representing his country at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia. In his first full season with MNUFC, Boxall started all 32 games of 2018 and scored his first goal with the club on Aug. 11 against LA Galaxy and his second – the winner – in a 3-2 result over Portland on Sept. 22.

Cuban midfielder, Alonso joined MNUFC January 10, 2019 after spending ten seasons with the Seattle Sounders. A proven leader, MLS Cup Champion and four-time MLS All-Star, the “Honey Badger” brings a wealth of MLS experience and tenacity to the Loons’ midfield. In 2018, he started 21 games in 25 game appearances, and for the sixth time in his 10-year career, recorded three assists during the regular season.

He had a superb debut season with the Loons, tallying eight goals — including four winners — and three assists in 27 games (15 starts) and finishing second in MLS Rookie of the Year voting. While he missed most of the 2018 season due to injury, Danladi played in 15 games, marking his first goal of 2018 at Vancouver on July 28 and his first assist against LA Galaxy August 11.

At 5-foot-11-inches and 170 lbs, Dotson has the potential to be a big presence in the defensive midfield position and provides the Loons depth at a position of need.
#13 ETHAN FINLAY | MIDFIELDERHeight: 5’9” Weight: 165 Birthdate: 8/6/1990 Hometown: Marshfield, WisconsinPrevious Club: Columbus Crew SC Acquired: Trade 8/9/2017
