October 20 Minority High School Visitation Day October 27 Mobile Minority Reception November 3 November Forum “Dream of Becoming a Physician” Events & Programs COSAM ODMA presents MINORITY HIGH SCHOOL VISITATION DAY BELIEVE Broadening Experiences in Leadership and Intellect to Evoke a Veracity for Education in COSAM College of Sciences and Mathematics, Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs Minority High School Visitation Day 2011, hosted by the Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs (ODMA) in the College of Sciences and Mathematics (COSAM), was held on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Auburn University Student Center Ballroom. The participation of administrators, faculty, staff and student volunteers made COSAM’s 8th Annual Minority High School Visitation Day 2011 a huge success. The total attendance was 128. High schools represented included Daphne, Southwest DeKalb, Dawson Street Christian School, Stanhope Elmore, Loachapoka, Muscle Shoals, Holy Innocent’s Episcopal, Opelika, Smith’s Station, and counselors representing several Shelby County schools. Volunteers, including two COSAM Leaders, arrived early to receive instructions related to their various assigned stations. A light breakfast was provided for our guests during registration. Charles Savrda, interim dean COSAM, enthusiastically welcomed participants. The greetings were brought by Timothy Boosinger, interim provost and vice-president of Academic Affairs, Ainsley Carry, vice president for Student Affairs, and Lawrence Wit, COSAM’s associate dean for Student Affairs. Bianca Evans, minority programs coordinator for COSAM Diversity and Multicultural Affairs, also extended greetings and introduced Session I: Recruiting, Financial Services and Scholarships. After a brief break, Session II: Academic and Pre- Professional Programs followed. Our special lunch guests were stationed at designated tables where students sat and engaged in lively discussions with faculty in their major field of interest. After lunch, Session III highlighted COSAM ODMA’s student support programs and student organizations. Eddrina Miller, Kyle Adams, Marissa Bolling and representatives from four student organizations in COSAM participated in the panel discussion. The program concluded with closing remarks. Participants were then released to the student recruiters for the event-ending Auburn University campus tour.

Broadening Experiences in Leadership and Intellect to Evoke a Veracity for Education in COSAM

College of Sciences and Mathematics, Office of Diversity and Multicultural Affairs

Minority Recruitment Receptions

Eddrina Miller, counseling intern, conducted

a session describing the “Do’s and Don’ts” of the resume. The session included the purpose

of a resume, types of resume, and standard resume components. The session ended with a

discussion of resume writing resources on

campus. The next topic is “Test Anxiety” to be held on Nov. 9, 2011.

Organizations Spotlight

Black Student Union (BSU)

The objectives of BSU are to represent the interests and concerns of black students at Auburn University; to bring together all aspects

of black student life for the purpose of improving the campus environment; encourage involvement of black students in all

campus activities; discourage and abate institutional and individual

National Organization for the Professional Advancement of

Black Chemist and Chemical Engineers (NOBCChE) The objectives of this organization are as follows: to increase the

awareness of professional opportunities in the fields of chemical engineering and chemistry; to establish, emphasize and strengthen

existing academic support channels; to increase each member's sense of cultural responsibility; and to promote professional

advancement in the fields of science, specifically chemistry and

October Lunch ‘N’ Learn : Resumes

COSAM’s Office of Diversity and

Multicultural Affairs represented COSAM at the Marriot Hotel in Birmingham, Ala. on

Oct. 6, 2011 and at the Renaissance Riverview Plaza in Mobile, Ala. on Oct. 27,

2011. The Auburn University Minority

Receptions brought together many outstanding students interested in sciences

and mathematics. Total prospective students in attendance with interest in

COSAM was 25. Several Auburn Alumni also attended including Brian Gosa,

Summer Bridge ’99 Alum and the first

alum to receive the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree from Auburn University’s Harrison

School of Pharmacy in 2006.

Loachapoka Exploring Auburn

Days (L.E.A.D.) Presentation

COSAM’s Office of Diversity

and Multicultural Affairs participated in “Explore Your

Possibilities…College Major Exploration Tours” sessions on

Oct. 5th and Oct. 19th. The

presentation included general information about college, what

to expect while attending, and why COSAM is a great option.

Students expressed an interest in Biological Sciences, Biomedical Sciences, and Physics with

concentrations in Pre-Medicine and Pre-Dentistry options. We

discussed COSAM Quick Facts, Scholarships and the COSAM Office of Diversity. This discussion included information about

the Summer Bridge Program, Workshops for Excellence Tutoring, Promoting Academic Success for Students (PASS)

Peer Mentoring Program, and

COSAM majors. Many of the students had previously attended

COSAM’s 2010 Minority High School Visitation Day or were planning to

attend this year’s event. The presentation was a success with 10

students at the round-table

discussion.

Use a font size of 10 to 14 points.

Use non-decorative typefaces. Choose one typeface

and stick to it.

Use action verbs to describe your experience; (e.g.,

“created,” “developed,” “increased.”)

Do not exaggerate the importance of your

achievements.

Omit personal information such as age, marital

status, height, weight, and gender.

Minimize jargon and abbreviations and be concise.

A tailored cover letter may be used to accompany a

resume.
