Tammy Needs A Home!Poor Tammy was abandoned in the driveway of
one of TAG Pet Rescue Sanctuary’s volunteers andhas been at the sanctuary for a year now. She is alovely cat - about 4 years old, very affectionate andwould love a new home with no other cats and withsomeone who could give her all the love and affectionshe so deserves after being dealt such a cruel start.
If you think you may be able to help Tammy, please call 01843 822931. She would be most grateful.

Is it me or is Spring actually beginning to break ? We seemto have had our fair share of cold wet weather just lately, in factmyself and my 2 neighbours had to sandbag our back doors justa couple of weeks ago, so it is really nice to see the sun when itpops it’s head out.
Firstly this month I feel I must make an apology to our localbobbies, who took my mentions of ‘police’ last month to meanthem personally, when actually I was using the term in a generalsense and not trying to decry our local lads. Sorry guys didn’tmean to get your backs up, I’ll think before I write next time !!
I also received a very irate letter from someone who Ipresume is a resident, but not really worthy of any reply as theyweren’t open enough to give me their name. But to answer oneof their points, with regard to our “Poor Parking” pictures, theyaren’t meant to suggest that anyone is doing anything illegalthat’s why we only label them as “Poor Parking”(and we alwaysremove number plates if they show,) they are just to show thebad parking that we constantly endure in the village, a pointwhich was also mentioned in the letter and which the writer saidno one ever did anything about.
Well we feel our pictures do just that, we do do somethingabout vehicles we see, we shame them with a picture in the hopethey don’t do it again !! I’m sure most drivers would prefer thatthan to get a ticket from the police for parking on corners, acrossfootpaths or abandoning them on bus stops or just out in theroad causing a traffic flow problem, and believe me we’d alsolove to see the bus not using the estate.
Gripe over. Now would you like a bit of light relief, haveyou seen that advert where the elderly couple are discussing thepurchase of an item they won’t name but it goes up the stairs.
Well I’m not crippled yet (maybe that could change if I take more poorparking pic’s though ?) but I have just acquired one of those items via theFreegle Thanet site, that I run, and already it has been a godsendtransporting some heavy items both up and down the stairs. When I told theCommunity Warden I’d got it installed he had a real chuckle.
Dog fouling continues to be what most villagers moan at us about, especially in Gas Alley, Domneva Road and of course the Rec. We alwayspass on your concerns and we hope eventually someone will get caught andfined, it might make others stop and think. That’s it, where’s Zac today ?

COMMUNITY WARDENSteve promised us a couple of paragraphs this month, but although he

He is available again for residents to contact him on his usual numberand he says you will see him out and about walking in the village.
He thanks everyone for their words of sympathy and all the get wellmessages he received and he’s looking forward to Minster Matters givinghim their usual ribbing again !!
TRADING STANDARDSReports have been received from Kent residents who have had “CSS
Childrens Support Society” charity donation bags posted through theirletter boxes. They ask residents to fill the bags with items they wish todonate to the charity – such as unwanted clothes, toys and bedding.
The bags quote their Registered Charity Number as 526305, but thisis not a valid number and CSS is believed to be a bogus charity.
Please do not make donations to this bogus charity. Always ensurethat your donations are going to reputable charities. You can check charitydetails by contacting the Charity Commission on 0845 3000 218 or bygoing to their website www.charity-commission.gov.uk
Please contact Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or go towww.consumerdirect.gov.uk if you receive one of these charity bags, orhave any further information about any bogus charities.
Kent Trading Standards wish to hear from anyone who has booked aboating holiday on a ‘Luxury Yacht’ in Alicante, Spain through a companyby the name of Dream Catchers purporting to be based inSevenoaks. Information suggests that the holidays do not exist and thecompany is not responding to attempts to contact them.
Please contact 01732 525291 if you have any information regardingthe company. Please call Consumer Direct on 08454 04 05 06 or go towww.consumerdirect.gov.uk if you need further advice on your consumerrights, or you want to report and traders you have concerns about.

The following is from the Draft Minutes of the March Parish MeetingMembers noted with concern that only 6 responses had been received
following an item appearing in Minster Matters seeking residents views onhow they would like to see the £500 prize money from the Village of theYear award expended.
RESOLVED: That it be agreed in principle to expend some of the moneyof the Christmas lights and that the amount to be spent be agreed at the nextmeeting.
Editor’s note: Slightly disappointed thatthis doesn’t make any mention of the WiFiaccess point which MM originally asked theParish Council for, and which received 50%of the vote as shown above.

Running the Paris Marathon for QEQM HospitalFour energetic consultant surgeons from QEQM hospital are taking on
a new challenge. Gynaecologist Zoe Woodward, and orthopaedic surgeonsAndrew Smith, Richard Slack and Mark Cornell are running in the ParisMarathon on April 11th. The four are seeking sponsorship for this 42 kilometreendeavour to raise funds for the QEQM hospital’s League of Friends.
The League’s current project is the purchase of new furniture for theWalmer outpatient department which is being renovated. Many patients attendclinics every week and will benefit from the improvements.
Next, the League will be replacing many of the bedside armchairsthroughout QEQM hospital. It is important for patients to have a chair that iscomfortable and the right height, especially after undergoing joint replacementsurgery. Money raised sponsoring Zoe, Andrew, Richard, and Mark willsupport this project.
The League’s chairman, Jeremy Voizey said, “I am delighted that oursurgeons are running to raise funds for the League. The more money we raise, the more we can do to improve the comfort and care of patients in our hospital.”
The runners will follow a route through the streets of Paris, beginning atthe Champs Elysee and finishing near the Arc de Triomphe.
To sponsor the runners, you can phone the League of Friends on01843 234507 and request a sponsorship form (please add Gift Aid ifapplicable), or you can sponsor them online at

MINSTER-IN-THANET WIMouth-watering aromas wafted through the Village Hall at the March meeting,
when Tina Cesbron from The Chai Stop spoke about the business of making curries, and brought samples for us to try. Members had been asked to bring along favouriterecipes, and Sarah Eaton-Brown kindly made her recipe for fudge, which was muchappreciated.
We had previously made a collection of money and items for ‘Support ourSoldiers’ Grab Bags, and Beryl Ravensdale plus two colleagues from Whitstable WIattended the meeting to receive the donations. As well as six other visitors, wewelcomed four new members to our institute.
Looking ahead, ideas for the next Dabble Day were requested. At the AcolGroup Meeting attended by several members, it was Minster’s turn to run the raffle, and give a report of last year’s activities. We were then treated to an excellent talkabout the life of women in Japan, and shown examples of clothing and shoes, whichwe were able to handle and examine.
Don’t forget the Wine & Wisdom evening on 10th April - see separate advert on page 22.
MAYHEMSMinster Mayhems will be dancing near the Bell from 5.15pm to 6.00pm on 23rdApril to celebrate St George's Day. It would be really good to see some of the villagecome out and support the young dancers.Check out the Mayhems website, we have loads of new pictures from some of our2009 events, Broadstairs, Tenterden, Deal and Rochester to name but a few .
A list of our 2010 Stands should be available in the very near future, so pleaselook back again real soon.

Flower Show ReminiscingThe Minster Show Committee are looking for interesting facts,
figures and pictures to use on their brand new website. The site isundergoing construction at this time and it is proposed to have thesite launch on Saturday 8th May which is also Show Launch Day.
You can help us by relating to us your memories, good or bad,of past shows, or by looking through your old photo albums andloaning us your treasured pictures/slides.
We are happy to receive written stories/memories or we will cometo you and record them audibly if you would prefer. With pictures/slideswe would like to borrow them for a very short while to scan theminto our computer and then return them to you. Even better would beto have names to go with any persons that they show, although weare happy to receive pictures/slides that are “unnamed”, such as thoserecently published in Minster Matters. We are also interested in findingimages of past Carnival Queens and their Courts, Show Princessesetc, in fact anything and everything to do with the show in days goneby.

Local Praise for Minster Matters OnlineI do not often visit MM’s site but have done so this morning only
to find a wealth of information you have added since I last logged on,so I thought I’d reply to your request for feedback and say that I thinkthe magazine is terrific and I would like to congratulate you all on avery professional and informative magazine.
I think Minster is very lucky to have such a dedicated team workingto keep the residents informed of all that the village has to offer, whichis quite a lot. Long may you reign and thank you on behalf of manyof my acquaintances who look forward to the magazine every month, but do not have access to the Internet and probably don’t get aroundto saying ‘thanks’ personally.

Dear Residents of MinsterI am attached to the Armbouts Cappel Twinning Committee. I have been
reading the report on the Minster Twinning Association in your Minster MattersDecember/January 2010 issue. I was very surprised to find that the majorityof the population of Minster had lost interest in the Twinning and could notform a Committee to save the Twinning from folding up. Everyone on theFrench side and on the English side have worked very hard to keep it alive. You will find from the different pages and cuttings that I have enclosed,(available from MM Editor - if required) information on various visits overthe years.
The Associations that are existing in Armbouts Cappel, I myself andMonsieur Jean Bonduelle received a delegation of Scouts in 2001, we haveschool exchanges which are very important these days, I also have regularvisits from the Royal British Legion to attend our different ceremonies in thecourse of a year.
I had a very good friend in Minster, his name was John Lynch until hispassing away. I am still in contact with his family. John always supplieddelegations for our ceremonies. I have always been extremely grateful overthis and his kindness shown to us over the many years that I knew him. Acharming man, he worked like myself with another friend of mine in Ramsgatekeeping the Military Liaison alive, he always believed like us that Exchangesand Twinning between different Towns, Villages and Associations of differentcountries was good for the moral.
We must try and keep this Twinning alive.God bless you Dear Friends.SincerelyJack G.C. SquireFrance

Going Back in Time. The rough road as we called it, beside the new Housing Estate, was our way
to School. We walked through the artichokes that were taller than us, before ButtsField development.
Seeing the Head Teacher Mrs Budds, going to School, driving her little car, known as The Greengage, and the arrival of small bottles of milk that came in crates, for each child.
Taking off over the marshes or the Drove, across the railway to the river Stour,or a walk round the lanes. Franks Café next to the men only Molineux Institute, now the Village Hall, Blackmans fish and chip shop now the Indian Restaurant, later came Kings Café now Mortons Fork, every one of the venues down by thechurch, where we all congregated, The Guides, run by Mrs Black then Ruby London,The Youth Club with its big old fire in the middle of the room, run by DennisGolder, and later by Frank and Pam Gillett. We all gathered in the cold, watchingthe Cadets in the school playground, being put through their paces. The Rec., whereall kind of sports were held, and every one gathered to watch., Sunday School, notonly in the Church, but in a little house in Prospect Road with the owner MissSimpkins, Apart from the shopping area, the shops, in someone’s living room. Onein Augustine Road, which was Razzell’s, and Ashley’s in Prospect Road, Alsoremembering the deep snow drift at the top of Prospect Road.
We knew nothing about illness and ailments, our Grandparents, were not illthey just passed away.
These are a few memories, I am sure some Minster residents will remember.

COMPUTER CORNER (I’M BACK!!)I know it’s been a while since I’ve written a computer corner, but magazine
space has been extremely limited and there were always more worthwhilearticles that needed to be included first.
I’ve had quite a few enquiries recently about web-sites that appear tohave scanned your computer for viruses and then tell you that they have founda goodly number, and are asking you to pay for the software to remove them.DON’T !! This is just a scam to get you to part with your money. Youprobably don’t have any malicious viruses and their software definitely won’tremove them. What it will do though is lighten your bank balance somewhatand possibly infect your computer into the bargain !. If you’re being plaguedby this type of site then it is highly likely you do have an infection but it isof their making and you should seek help to get it removed, if your ownantivirus program can’t do it for you. Please don’t say at this stage “but Idon’t have an antivirus program, or mine isn’t up to date”. If you are usingthe Internet without adequate security you are leaving your computer wideopen to all sorts of problems not all of which you will become aware of,except that you may notice a rapid drop in performance and see that yourhard disk light is working overtime, which could well signify that your machinehas become a “bot” in a large chain of infected pc’s, churning out spam or‘denial of service attacks’ without you being aware that anything is wrong, because your machine has been taken over by some unscrupulous individualwho wishes to cause havoc to others and insecure computers are their lifeblood.
Whilst mentioning Antivirus programs I’ve also received calls about AVGnow updating to version 9 and the fact that it is no longer free - well it is stillfree - you just have to look hard for the none too conspicuous links on theAVG website. My recommendation to those who wish to download the freeversion is to enter free.avg.com into your web browser address bar (not aGoogle or Yahoo search bar) when the site opens look for the heading“Download and Upgrade” click ‘Download AVG Free’ - now on the nextpage scroll down to the Free “DOWNLOAD “ button (big and red) click this- on the next page locate and click the tab that says “Installation Files” nowclick and download the Free Edition (note the file size is about 79mb) don’tclick the AVG Download Manager (which is only 1mb) - locate thedownloaded file on your computer and double click it to install version 9.
That’s all folks !!If I don’t get hijacked I may be back next month !!!Itsma Hobby

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING - March(The following are excerpts taken from the Draft Minutes)Minute 245 – Village of the Year AwardCllr. Mrs Thomson enquired whether a response had been received and the Clerk responded
that she was still awaiting information about retaining the signs and the re-instatement of thesign that had been damaged.
East Kent Access Phase 2 – Closure of FootpathsThe Clerk reported that KCC had advised of proposals to temporarily close footpaths
T37, T39 and TR 32 during the construction works for the Access Road. Cllr. Day reportedthat he had raised concerns with the public rights of way officer (KCC) and the Clerk undertookto raise this matter with Geoff Cripps, the KCC officer who had addressed the Parish Councilon the access road proposals and obtain the necessary maps of the closure. KALC would beasked whether such closures can be made without proper consultation.
iii) Tothill Street – The road is to be re-surfaced within the next few months.v) H2B Site – Complaints had been received about the closeness of the front doors of
some dwellings close to the Bumpy Track. It was agreed to refer this matter to the PlanningCommittee for consideration and a possible site visit.
264. Community Warden and Policing ReportsP.C. Reed reported that there had been 9 reported crimes during the month of February

In respect of Gas Alley the Clerk was asked to discuss with TDC whether lighting couldbe installed in the alley and Cllr. Day enquired whether the lights could be provided fromthe highways improvement fund and Cllr. Hibberd undertook to investigate. Members wereadvised that Steve Taylor the Community Warden was on sick leave and that Alan McDonald, the Warden from St. Nicholas at Wade would undertake warden duties within Minster.
Finally the Kim Burgess referred to a “Kill Your Speed” sign and asked whether Councilwould wish to purchase any for the Village.

(B) the question of the purchase of a “Kill your Speed” sign be referred to the OperationsCommittee for consideration of the possible siting; and the Clerk to arrange a meeting betweenP.Cs Burgess and Reed and Cllr. Mrs. Thomson to discuss general policing matters in theVillage.
265.Molineux Road Play AreaThe Council were informed of anti social behaviour from youths aged between 13 to 20
on the Molineux Road play area. Police had been involved with complaint to deal with thedisturbance which often went on until 1 a.m.
Members advised that the playground had been provided for children up to the age of11 years. It was suggested that the problem may be alleviated if the fencing was raised inheight and the playground was locked over night.
RESOLVED: That the report be noted and that the Clerk obtain quotations to allow forraising the height of the fencing and for the securing of the gate and that the matter be furtherconsidered at a future meeting. Cont’d on next page....

I was a star, snuffed out at mybrightest hour. It wasn’t my time to goand if the person who did this to methinks I’m going to take it lying down, they can think again.
Now know I was no saint (and ifyou’re in any doubt you can ask mynot so devoted husband Edward) butreally; being found dead at a party withan empty glass by your corpse is just
so tacky. So here’s the plan, sweeties. Round up the suspectsand give them a night they won’t forget in a hurry.
Frances, Hedley, Alex; they might look like a bunch ofharmless old luvvies but I wouldn’t trust them as far as I couldthrow them and it wouldn’t surprise me if they know a thing ortwo about my sad demise. This could be my finest performanceyet, my chance to go out with a bang, and if I were you Iwouldn’t miss the chance to witness my revenge…
With special effects and laugh a minute lines, this is onenot to be missed! This show is directed by Scott Steele.
12th – 15th May and Tickets £6.00 and £5.00Available from Terry on 01843 220208
IN MEMORY OFLESLIE (LES) SHARPWho passed away at the age of 92 on
the 18th February in The Pilgrims Hospice. His funeral was held at Thanet Crematorium on 5th
March.Les’ family; Andrew, Sue, Christine, Barry and David would
like to thank all his friends and neighbours for their very kindmessages of sympathy and condolence and also for the flowersand generous donations which will be split between the Hospiceand the RNIB.
He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
Growing up in drought-prone California, somethings have been habit my whole life, and so it surprisesme when I see the opposite done years later, even whenit comes down to something as simple as brushing yourteeth.
Ecotip:Don’t leave the water running when you are
brushing your teeth. Turn the water on only when youneed it to rinse your mouth and the brush.

Horseying around! My friend Helen and I went down to my stables in the Christmas
holiday to groom and look after our horses. We had lots of fun playingin the snow. Also we had fun with our horses and now we have movedour horses to a nicer place in Preston, hopefully we will have morefun. Where our horses are now we can do some sponsored rides forcharity, like at Easter time we are doing an Easter egg hunt on horseback in Preston. I have been with horses along time but my best friendSophie has grown up with horses all of her life.

My Last Year at Minster SchoolI will miss Minster primary when I leave but everyone says you
must move on in your life. Not everyone in my year is going to thesame school as me sadly. I am going to Sandwich technology schoolit is really cool there because you get to do loads of things that youcan enjoy like sports etc. I will also miss the teachers but most of allI am completely dreading the leavers service because year 6 sing a sadsong and everyone cries.
