There is nothing that has been determined at all, even what a taskforce will look like at this point. We’re still negotiating it, it’s obviously the end of the semester so don’t expect anything to happen by the end of this semester. A couple of things, if you are doing a J-term or you’re just not here on campus during J-term and you live off campus and you’d like to keep your car on campus, you can purchase a J-term parking pass. The reason that’s important is that in the past, DPS has gotten called when there is a lot of snow and cars are parked in snow lanes. If the owner is not here, whether they’re abroad or at home, DPS has towed the car for you so it’s not impounded by the city, but it’s expensive. It’s cheaper to just buy a j-term parking pass and then you don’t have to worry about snow routes or anything like that. It’s a new thing and I don’t know how much they’ve been promoting it because in past years we’ve towed students on side streets. Check that out, I think you can buy it online, tell your friends. B. Next week on Wednesday the 11 th , there will be community talks. The Polk County council on wellness and EFR, a local life coaching, mental health agency in town, will be sponsoring a lecture discussion all about underage drinking and vaping or e-cigging, I don’t know if they’re calling it that but I’m trying to make it catch on. I’m pretty sure it’s anti those things, so feel free to attend, 6-7 PM in Sussman. a. Senator Maulsby: Do the j-term passes work for commuter lots?

a. Ella Field, Senate Graphic Designer b. Taylor Staves, R;se Up c. Meghan Kier, R;se Up d. Emily Hanna, R;se Up e. Abbie Gartland, R;se Up f. Lizette, Occupational Therapy Student g. Laura, Occupational Therapy Student h. Keli, Occupational Therapy Student

B. Board Meeting a. It will be the second week of January. I will be attending the Board Meeting, it will be taking place in Denver. I

have the opportunity to go out, so if there is anything you want me to convey to the Board of Trustees or anything in particular you want me to talk about, feel free to share with me and I will take it into consideration.

C. Marty a. I will have my meeting with Marty sometime in January. We had a meeting for December this month but that

had to be canceled due to Marty’s schedule changing around, I will be sure to talk to him before meeting with the Board of Trustees so if there’s anything you want me to convey to Marty, let me know.

D. RSO Taskforce a. If you all recall the email from Dean Parker that he sent from the student list serve, we’ve been having

conversations about RSO approval status looks like for student senate. There is nothing that has been determined at all, even what a taskforce will look like at this point. We’re still negotiating it, it’s obviously the end of the semester so don’t expect anything to happen by the end of this semester. It is a conversation we are having, one that we will continue having moving forward. I will keep you in the loop as things progress but there is literally nothing to report other than there is a conversation taking place and we don’t even know what the committee itself looks like.

V. Administrative Report – Associate Dean of Students Joe Campos A. Hope everyone’s week before finals is going okay and that you all have a successful Stop Day or day free from study,

not sure where we landed on the name for that but I’ve been using both of them interchangeably.

B. Next week on Wednesday the 11th, there will be community talks.

Page 2: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

1. Yes, commuter lots as well. I think there’s a special one if you’re not going to be here the entire time, you can come and go, it’s not a thing where you just have to leave it there. but there’s one for residential and commuter. They want to consolidate the residential folks as much as possible into one or two lots to avoid issues regarding snow removal.

VI. Treasurer’s Report – Treasurer Nate Wright A. SDF Update

a. You’ll see I put my SDF update in my report, don’t know why I haven’t been doing that, but it’ll be there from now. If all of our motions tonight are funded in full, we’ll be at $25,980.82 left in the SDF for the year.

B. Changes over j-term a. Looking at making a lot of little changes over J-term. I’ve been talking to Nate Reagan, we met on Friday last

week and he showed me a few different budget systems that he used and I think I can use a hybrid of a couple of his different systems to much better manage allocated funds, how they’re spent, and getting into forecasting so I don’t have to sit there on a calculator and try to crunch numbers myself. It’ll be a lot easier to get better and more accurate at predicting the future. Excited about that.

C. Feedback about resolution a. I’ve gotten lots of feedback about the resolution we passed last week. Most of it is good, I’ve been talking to

board members that I keep in loose contact with to tell them that it was coming and after a two-minute conversation, they were pretty on board in favor of it so that’s exciting to me.

D. Elections a. If y’all want to let me know, I have a few questions on if there are elections that RSOs have the first week or

two of school. I’m looking to move annual funding moving maybe a few weeks or so up because it would be a lot better for everyone, especially around Relays time since it gets crazy. If you know of any, shoot me an email, shoot me a text, do what you gotta do.

VII. Speakers A. None

VIII. Unfinished Business A. Motion SS [191121] – D: Rules and Regulations Amendments – [Vice President Roach]

a. VPSL Roach: Motion to approve as read 1. Seconded by Senator Springsteen 2. Motion Passes

b. Dialogue to VPSL Roach 1. This is if you will recall, after an Elected Assembly before break, we had a really nice rigorous

discussion about permanently moving the student senate meeting time. We have introduced amendment to our Rules and Regulations that would start in the 34th session that would stipulate that the student senate cannot start meeting later than 8 PM on Thursday. It would be up to the 34th session to vote on the official meeting time via resolution at that very first meeting, just like normal, but for consistency’s sake, we’re just going to say 8 PM for right now, allowing them the flexibility to continue moving the meeting time earlier as senate continues and we continue working towards prioritizing mental health and having early meetings. We had a really good discussion at Elected Assembly, and I look forward to a good discussion tonight.

c. Questions 1. None

d. Dialogue 1. Senator Hutchison: I think this is really cool and smart. I like it. 2. Senator Springsteen: I fully support it. If you don’t know, I’m big into health, but also my bedtime is

10 PM and keeping me up past 10 PM is mean and makes me tired the next day. I support it. 3. Senator Reichardt: I’m mixed about this, I’m not against meeting earlier on principle. I think it is

better for people, but I don’t know if it needs to be 100% set in stone. I like giving senate’s the ability to schedule themselves as they see fit. The future VPSL is presumably in this room and I think they would be able to draft a motion doing just this for next year.

4. VPSL Roach: I kind of want to point out that the 2.5 hour meeting stipulation is also in this bylaw amendment, so meetings would not be allowed to go past 10:30. Just wanted to point that out.

5. Advisor Campos: I think when Kristin and I and exec were talking about this, I think the reason that we thought it was important to set this standard is because going into elections in the spring, people need to know what time they need to be available. If someone is not willing to prioritize senate over a class or any other activity that they might validly need to be a part of, it’s helpful for senate to say

Page 3: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

“this is when we’ll be meeting,” versus not having that discussion and having to meet at 9 PM because that’s sort of been the norm. It helps set the expectation for new members that this is when senate will meet. I definitely understand the concerns of taking that control away from future senates, but the way I look at it is that it’s more about setting a tone and setting an example, so that if you want to be a part of senate, then this is the time you need to make sure you leave free on your schedule, trying to make people prioritize what they are involved in.

6. VPSL Roach: I want to point out some concerns that our other advisor Kristin Economos raised in an email that I got from her this week. She has a little bit of a different approach and I don’t want to speak for her, but her recommendation was to continue thinking about this and maybe thinking about it next semester and going at it again with a clear head. That was her thought, I don’t know if Joe wants to expand on that more, they might have talked about it, but that’s all I’ve got.

7. Advisor Campos: Kristin and I agree that research shows even after 9 PM our cognitive functioning starts to decrease. Obviously, we all still have things to do past nine, you’re all up past nine anyways. She wants us to be even bigger mavericks in terms of setting example and sort of reacting to that information and trying to make sure that senate is meeting at a time where we can all be at our peak. I did tell Kristin when we discussed this that this is a good first step and this is a big shift for senate. It’s a long-standing shift. So maybe it needs to be done incrementally, maybe we need to do it at 8 PM for a year or two and then we decided we need to move it forward, there is still then that opportunity to alter that bylaw however they see fit. Certainly yes, Kristin and I would both support moving it even earlier, but I personally feel that incremental change is still important and helps to transition more seamlessly.

e. Motion Carries IX. New Business

A. MOTION SS [191205] – A; [National Occupational Therapy Conference] – [Treasurer Wright] a. Seconded by Senator Blume b. Dialogue to Treasurer Wright

i. You’ll notice instead of doing three separate motions, we put it all in one. Historian Nagengast pointed out you can apply as a group when you’re going to a conference like this, rather than doing three separate funding motions we can do it all in one and save everyone some time. With that, I’ll yield to our speakers.

ii. Motion to yield time 1. Seconded by Senator Johnson 2. Motion Passes

a. Lizette: We are looking forward to this conference in March. We have the opportunity to present a workshop, which is new for our department. We’re really excited to be one of the first groups to present at this conference and represent Drake. We’re going with the intent of teaching about health practice. We’re going to be teaching practitioners how to use certain equipment, how to run a treatment session, how to run assessments and beyond. This does not only to occupational therapy, it can be applied to other healthcare professions.

b. Laura: By going to this conference we will enhance Drake University’s position as a premier comprehensive university in the Midwest and as a national leader in higher educational learning by not just collaborating with occupational therapy students from other states, but we will also be educating and collaborating with other OT practitioners, not just from the Midwest but from across the United States. It will not just us as Occupational Therapy students going, it’s everyone, so it’s a very good opportunity for all of us to educate and learn from other practitioners as well. In addition, by going to this conference and attending this workshop, we’ll enhance Drake’s position as a premier comprehensive university in the Midwest by providing a public service to future clients. This is an emerging practice; we will be helping people from different lifespans, pediatric through geriatric. Occupational therapy is a public service, we are helping patients and therefore giving service. The mission of this conference goes hand in hand with the Drake vision statement. In addition to that, by going to present this workshop we’ll be following the core values of Drake University, which are collaboration, leadership, innovation, professionalism, and student learner centric value. We will be collaborating with other OT students and

Page 4: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

practitioners, we will be showing entrepreneurial leaderships because we are demonstrating an emerging practice in our field, we will be representing Drake in a professional manner, we will be advocating and learning, and then self-learner centered, we will be not just educating but also learning and bringing what we learned back to our program and educating others. In addition to that, DMU will also be opening an Occupational Therapy program in the next few months so we need to stand out. This is a way to promote our school and get people to come to Drake University instead of DMU because we will be saying we have the opportunity to learn as a student and grow as a professional.

i. Senator Hutchison: What other funding sources have you sought out? 1. Lizette: Sure, so we really have one, and that’s the CPHS. They

allot $250, so when we submitted our requests, we didn’t include the registration for the conference which will be covered by CPHS funds to cover that. Does that make sense? We have other funds but we’re using it for other reasons.

ii. VPSL Roach: What is the registration fee for the conference? 1. Lizette: The registration fee for the conference is $300.

iii. VPSL Roach: Why is there a discrepancy in what is being requested? 1. Keli: I know people in the area so I have housing covered, so I

will be putting in for a car rental whereas they are putting in for a hotel.

iii. I don’t think we’ve seen that thorough of a funding motion ever, so snaps for that. Last year we funded some OT students to present a poster at a similar conference, but these people are actually helping with a breakout session which is cool, and it’s in an emerging field. SFAC Liked it a lot, I like it a lot, let’s fund it in full.

c. Questions i. Senator Blume: In the past, have there been requests for car rentals?

1. I asked Kody about that and she said it’s not something we do a lot but it’s something we can do.

d. Dialogue i. Senator Johnson: I just wanted to echo Treasurer Wright and say that this is not just presenting but

also an active exercise that gets Drake’s name out there more than just presenting. I think it’s really cool and innovation is big at Drake so being able to present and do that in an innovative field is really awesome.

ii. Senator Blume: I think it’s great, they’re getting our name out there, we’re bettering Drake University and helping the community by getting out this information. I’m in favor of this.

e. Motion Carries B. MOTION SS [191205] – B; [Drake R;se Up: Suicide Prevention Week] – [Treasurer Wright]

a. Seconded by Senator Maulsby b. Dialogue to Treasurer Wright

i. If you flip to the back of the agenda, breakdowns of the last one and this one are included. I’m sure Abbie will do a great job.

ii. Motion to allocate time to the speaker 1. Seconded by Senator Tekautz 2. Motion Passes

a. Abbie: Hi guys, if you don’t remember me I’ll give you a little review. I’m Abbe and I’m here with Drake R;se Up, the suicide prevention team. I have brought three of my teammates with me and they will introduce themselves and their roles and why they are so important to be here with me.

i. Emily: My name is Emily Hanna, I’m the Vice President of Organization for R;se Up so I kind of am the treasurer and take care of the budget as well as notes and stuff. I’ve been on this team for two years.

ii. Meghan: I’m Meghan, and I’m the campus outreach coordinator and the HR person.

Page 5: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

iii. Taylor: I’m Taylor Staves and I’m the speaker chair, so I’m in charge of getting a speaker for Suicide Prevention Week. This is my year and a half ish being a part of this.

b. Abbie: They are so important to our team, as well as our fifty other members on this team. If you would turn your heads to the projector, I have made a presentation to show you so you don’t have to watch me the whole time. Suicide Prevention Week is March 30th through April 4th this year. We have been planning it since last Suicide Prevention Week and we have everything reserved. Monday we are bringing our speaker in, we are bringing in Richie Contartsi, and we will be having a mental health event after and as you can see, Men is capitalized because this speaker will be speaking about how important it is for men to be talking about mental health, and to be comfortable and vulnerable. He’ll be helping our men through it and our fraternities and men’s athletics are helping lead that. Tuesdays is Cupcakes with Counselors. We will have cupcakes from Sodexo of course and we will bring counselors from around Des Moines to talk about what the resources are in Des Moines and how we can benefit from them in every aspect of our lives. On Wednesday, we have Diversity and Suicide Prevention and that is a painting project. That one is staying more on the DL right now as we are going to reveal it very soon. Thursday, we have the different religions on campus coming to talk about mental health and suicide prevention and how we can cope through those religions. And then the Residence Halls through RHA are putting on an event in all seven residence halls that are open. Friday is Share My Story, and Saturday of course is our third annual Suicide Prevention Walk.

c. So, this is Richie Contartsi, he is a motivational, mental health speaker. I’m going to show you a promotional video because I don’t want to explain everything and he’s going to do it much better, especially when you guys fund it and hear him come talk.

d. The next slide is looking at the breakdown. Richie Contartsi, who you just watched, is one of the highest ranked suicide prevention speakers in the entire world. If you look at other suicide prevention speakers, they review him and say he’s phenomenal. The breakdown is our speaker costs $4,000 in total, $1,975 is coming from us and $25 for a thank you gift of course. The other half of that is generously coming from SAB. For Share My Story, we need $945 for food, because we’re having outside people coming. We have high schoolers, so high school parents will come and watch them and their siblings that they drag along. All these people are coming to watch and will need food. For passive events, we are requesting $221, the rest of the breakdown is in the back of your agenda. For Cupcakes and Counselors, we are bringing in lots of cupcakes, lots of counselors, so we’ll need a lot for that as well. So, the total, $3,283.

i. Senator Springsteen: Thanks for being here. How did you go through the process of picking the speaker and collaborating to fund the speaker?

1. Taylor: I have a committee and we put together a list of speakers that we thought would be good to bring to campus. We settled on Richie just because he speaks to everyone from sixth grade audiences to corporate businesses and everyone loves him. We thought he would be great to bring to Drake. I’ve spoken with him and he’s really interested in Drake and wants to get to know us as a community so that he can be able to give a speech that is more relatable to our students which is really cool. He wants to be able to relate to us as much as possible and what our values on campus are.

ii. VPSA Drake: I have a question about the window painting sticks, which windows are you painting?

1. The Hubbell ones a. I was just asking because I know some windows you

have to pay to clean; did you include that cost.

Page 6: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

i. No, we’ll have to figure that out; thanks for telling us though!

iii. VPSL Roach: Hi Abbie. This is a lot of food. Do you think that your events would be as successful without that much food?

1. We would like to have a lot of food there because we moved the Share My Story event to dinner time, so we’re also looking to get donations of hot dogs, hamburgers, all that kind of stuff from local restaurants. I do think we need that much food because if for any reason we don’t eat that much or whatever, the walk is the next morning so all that food, all those bags of chips will go to that event.

iii. I think Abbie covered everything I wanted to talk about c. Questions d. Dialogue

i. Senator Blume: I cannot support this event enough; I think this is one of the greatest events Drake puts on. They have great initiative. In regard to food, I think we talked a lot about setting precedent, this is an event at dinner time. In order to avoid people getting lightheaded and upset physically, emotionally, and mentally, I think with our approval of the last snacks, it’s very important to keep that going. Dinner time is very important. Great event.

ii. Senator Koch: I just want to say yes, 87 times. I really enjoy everything about that and everything that it stands for. As the Health and Safety senator, I would like to officially echo what Calvin said about the Health and Safety matters.

iii. VPSA Drake: Thank you for actually looking for donations for your food, that’s so important. Not a lot of people think about that when they’re buying food. Also, I’m really excited about this SAB collaboration, you guys have been lovely to work with and I think this will help a lot of students. They’re reaching out to different groups which not a lot of people think of.

iv. VPSL Roach: Thank you Abbie and thank you R;se Up for all of your hard work. I performed at Share My Story last year. If you have a story to share, you should also share it. I do want to voice a concern or raise it to all of your attention. At our last meeting we requested $1,100 for food for an event for 500 people in the evening time which is almost identical to this request, and you guys tore it apart and yelled about it for 20 minutes. I just want to remind you all that you were very very concerned about how expensive the food was and how you were concerned it would still be effective without food. I just want to remind you that half of you felt that way and you don’t seem to anymore and it’s really interesting.

v. Treasurer Wright: I believe that now, precedent has been set and we are following precedent as we should.

vi. Senator Klein: As a new student organization, it’s good you are all taking on this event, I am in support.

vii. Senator Johnson: I just wanted to speak a little bit to the food since that’s an issue. I think that it’s a bit different because a bunch of high schoolers and their families are coming. It’s also cool that they have donations on top of that, so that was something that was my concern last time.

e. Motion Carries X. Officer Report: Vice President of Student Life – Kiley Roach

A. Spring Retreat Planning a. Doing a little bit of work on the spring retreat, I kind of took a week off with break so there will be more

updates to come. B. Have a good break 😊"#$%

a. It’s been a long semester; it’s been a stressful one, but it has also been a pleasure to work alongside all of you. I feel like I’ve grown up a lot this semester and I hope you feel that way too. I am looking forward to secret senate and to break.

1. Senator Maulsby: Do you know when we’ll set our office hours? a. Over J-term if you want to send them to me, by January 15th. You all should know your

schedules by now. Thank you for reminding me to do that. XI. Officer Report: Vice President of Student Activities – Joanna Drake

A. Upcoming Events

Page 7: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

a. J-Term event 1. There will be a j-term event on the 16th, which is cake decorating.

b. Open Mic sign up 1. Sign up is out now, if you’re interested, use the link I put on the agenda.

a. Senator Maulsby: When is the open mic night? i. That will be next semester in February.

XI. Senator Reports A. Senator Springsteen

a. The Academic Affairs Dinner is February 17th at 5 PM, a Monday night. If you have Monday night, I know in the past our advisors have been willing to send an email about an excused absence, Joe is nodding so I’m assuming that’s a yes. The theme is talking about health and strategies we can engage in the classroom to have a healthier student body. We’ll be talking about all six pillars of wellness; if you don’t know what those are, you’ll learn at the dinner. Mark your calendars, I sent out the form so you can request invites. If you sent in a form, raise your hand because I forgot to put a name on it. Can you just resend it? I will make sure you have first priority of who you want, but I was a silly head and didn’t put a name on it.

1. Advisor Campos: Where is it? a. It’s in Levitt.

2. VPSL Roach: What time is it at? a. 5 PM is when doors will open, and opening remarks are at 5:15 PM. I’ll send you more

information as I get it. B. Senator Trees

a. We have a media training event for DPAC and friend’s tomorrow from 6-8, it’s in lower Meredith, the place with the TV. Y’all can come. They put you in front of a camera, and then RPC asks you straight up intense political questions and you have answer them and she’ll critique you. It’s kind of wild because everyone is there from other political organizations and everyone says what they think, and you can’t pull up on them because RPC is there and will pull up on you. It’s a good space that everybody gets to say what they think and for once there is no retaliation. You should come, it’ll be fun, I’ll be there.

1. Senator Binion: Is there a dress code? Business casual, Drake gear? a. Not a chance. Don’t wear green though, she will be like “if you wear green, you’ll be a

meme on twitter.” Also don’t wear necklaces, that’s a thing too. I wore one last year and she was like “don’t do that.”

C. Senator Hutchison a. Pictures are done, I made all the nameplate things because I needed them really really fast, so I did it. Thank

you if you submitted a picture, it probably got in because one person submitted 70 pictures on their own and the rest were other people. Shoutout Will. That happened. Hopefully I’ll get them printed, Kiley I’m going to work with you on that, they’ll be up by the end of break.

b. The LMS meeting I’ve been going to, the committee review, that’s going well. We had our last meeting on Monday, we’re probably going to tell the administration and the Provost to leave Blackboard because Blackboard is horrible. We’re probably going to move to Blackboard Ultra or Canvas. If you have any feedback you want me to share with them, let me know and I’ll put that in the notes.

D. Senator Koch a. Brief update on the tampon project that VPSL Roach and I have been working on. We finally got some emails

back from facilities, so we are on the next phase of this a lot of stage process. But we’re going to the next one, so it’s exciting!

E. Senator Binion a. My report is pretty long, as well as many others, but one thing I failed to mention is that UNITY decided to take

up a lot of senate initiatives and Peyton really encouraged it. Something we took from Senate is that each exec member has an organization assigned to them to do monthly check ins, so that’s I failed to mention, but we tried to take a lot of the senate processes and incorporate them.

b. Shameless plug, come and see Twelfth Night, Saturday 2 PM and 7:30 PM; it’s pay what you can, so bring your life savings.

F. Senator Cohen a. The food drive going on right now, it will go til next Tuesday, December 10th. There are boxes located in the

Student Involvement and Leadership Office, and in SLC, and by the c-store. Donate if you’re a part of an organization participating in friendly competition, then you can go tour the Impact pantry and hang out with Griff. I just wanted to promo that real quick.

XII. Issues A. Senator Springsteen

a. I don’t think we should be petty with each other over funding food in front of student organizations. It’s really disappointing we presented ourselves that way. If you have issues with each other, please do it outside of this table, because it doesn’t look good. They don’t need to see that. We’re adults.

B. VPSL Roach a. Thank you, Kasey. Going along with that, don’t slam your placard at people. I’ve had placards slammed down

really childishly at me numerous times this semester. It’s not cool, it’s not funny, it’s really petty and childish. Just don’t do it.

b. Otherwise, the office has a bunch of stuff in it and it’s looking kind of gross. If you go in there and you put something down, just pick it up. Don’t be nasty.

c. I’ve had a message on the board for like two months to pick up your certificates from inauguration. So many of you have still not doing that. Ella put a lot of work into designing them, you guys are in the office several times a week, I know you see it on the board. Just put your hand in the tray and just take it. I don’t want to see them anymore.

C. President Johnston a. Just to go along with that: tone and phrasing, please. Please.

XIII. Announcements/Affirmations A. Senator Hutchison

a. Happy Chrohn’s and Colitis Awareness Week. If you didn’t know, now you know. Adam probably would’ve told you, but I’m here to tell you because I support him more than he supports himself.

B. Senator Reichardt a. I want to affirm President Johnston. We went for a walk tonight at Gray’s Lake during the sunset. I know,

sounds really romantic. We just had a good hour and a half long talk, pre-finals, it was a good way to destress before finals and I appreciated it a lot.

C. Advisor Campos a. Shouldn’t Blume go first?

1. President Johnston: Oh. No, you can go first. b. Tomorrow if any of you are so inclined, it is our dearly beloved Provost’s birthday. If you are so inclined, send

her a message. I think she has an Instagram, I’m not sure. It’s her birthday and I think she is a wonderful human being and I’m happy to work with her. December birthdays are hard.

D. Senator Blume a. Boat of the week. This type of boat is a sailing boat with a single mast, it originated in Friendship, Maine.

Traditionally a fishing boat used off the coast of Maine, especially for lobstering until gas engines came along. It was produced by Wilbur A. Morse. It’s fit for one sea person, but it can still carry a very sizeable load, very impressive. It’s also called a Muscongus Bay sloop or a Lobster Sloop.

1. A Friendship Sloop! a. President Johnston: I don’t understand, you’re in the boat alone

i. It’s the friendship you have with the boat. E. VPSL Roach

a. Affirmation to VPSL Roach, every time I am shook every time that I’m so proud of you for being comfortable and confident enough to say things that might not be a popular opinion and voice your concerns because I know it’s something I struggle with and that’s really nice to see.

b. Affirmation to myself, it’s been a rough semester and I’m done after today. I have a couple of assignments but no finals. It’s been a wild ride.

c. Fun Fact of the Week, an inmate sued himself for 5 million dollars for committing a crime that went against his religious beliefs. He made the state pay the damages because he had no money himself.

F. Senator Klein a. Last week was Thanksgiving break and I wanted to say I’m thankful for all of you and all of the work that you

do. It’s noticed and recognized. b. Special shoutout to the ex-officios for doing great work and being at the table here with all of us and making us

one big family. Thank you to all of you for what you do. G. Senator Trees

a. Authentic. Authentic and real. Did you peep that in the video? I just wanted to bring that up because I thought it was really funny.

b. I have something unpopular to say as well: Apple Music 2019 Wrap is way harder than Spotify’s lil thing. I know a bunch of y’all are Spotify users.

c. Andrew (?) d. Shoutout to Parker too, that Futsal shuffle reference was good. Cutting edge.

H. Senator Johnson a. Fashion tip of the week is dying your hair, special affirmation for the bold color (Sarah), and you too (Kasey). b. Back in May, I was willed the “RA who shares all their programs” will, but I’m passing on that will to my dear

Maddie Topliff. So, for next semester, if you feel like sharing please do so. I. Senator Tekautz

a. Affirmation to President Nicky J for letting me observe him for my class. I’ve been putting this off all semester so I was like “oh I guess I’ll just observe him.”

b. Another affirmation to Secretary Brustkern for surviving Psych 001, Intro to Psych together. We got through, we manifested and got good grades on our last test.

J. Senator Binion a. Last Equity and Inclusion fact of the whole semester: Student groups DUAL, Drake University Alternative

Lifestyles and SELF, Students for Equity, Liberation, and Feminism, was founded on campus. b. Alternative fact, 1993, DUAL is renamed BGLAD, Bisexual, Gay, and Lesbian Alliance at Drake. c. Affirmation to VPSA Drake, she that girl d. Affirmation to Zac for his hair e. Affirmation to Senator Trees because tomorrow is his birthday

K. Advisor Campos a. More of an announcement, there was an email sent out and this is very last minute notice, but tomorrow

morning at 9:30 am, Pom Stage, the Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot will be speaking. It’s sponsored by Rainbow Union and Coalition of Black Students. Lori Lightfoot is the first openly gay Chicago mayor and she’s also a woman of color. I don’t know what she is going to speak about but I intend to find out with my own two ears. I’ll be there tomorrow.

L. VPSL Roach a. John Delaney will also be at Mars Café tomorrow at like, 10. Coffee with a candidate. I might go, we’ll see. b. Affirmation to Senator Maulsby, big dad shirt energy, not today but in that one mirror selfie. It’s a really

impressive dad shirt, you should all check it out. c. Affirmation to all the hair transformations, I loved seeing them happen. d. In general, I’ve had a long, mostly good semester, and that is largely in part to the people around the table. Even

if we get snarky and petty a lot, I love you all and I respect and appreciate you all so much. I love reading what you’re doing and seeing it happen. That means a lot to me to see people care about the same things that I care about. Thank you for doing that work and for continuing to do that work. I’m excited to exchange gifts!

M. President Johnston a. I’d like to give an affirmation to someone that’s not at this table, and I don’t even know who they are. Someone

as I was walking home as I was walking across the street stopped at the stop sign and offered me a box of cheese bread. He had just gotten off of work and he was going to throw it out. If you believe in cosmic whatever, it just so happened that I went over and got this box of cheesy bread and it maybe took an extra 7 seconds, and this car came across the street that I was supposed to go through at 100 mph, went right through the stop sign. So, if this guy hadn’t offered me cheesy bread, I don’t know, maybe I’d be dead. I understand stranger danger whatever, but I don’t know, that car wasn’t stopping.

1. Advisor Campos: Did you eat the cheesy bread? a. No

N. Senator Maulsby a. *showing off aforementioned mirror selfie and dad shirt* It was blue, and it had vertical stripes, and I cuffed it

and I had the pocket there. It was $2. O. Senator VanDrongelen

a. I wanted to affirm my friends because they’re 50% of our viewership every week. They got breakfast with me this morning and they really support student senate, so shoutout to them.

P. VPSA Drake a. I wanted to affirm President Johnston for always letting me speak last, because I feel like my words are the

most important. b. Affirmation to myself for having important words.

Page 10: Minutes December 5 - Drake University Student Senatedrakesenate.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/12/12.5.2019.33rd.minutes.pdfA. Motion to Approve by Senator Klein B. Seconded by Senator

c. You all are so funny and it’s really hard not to laugh during senate meetings because all of your faces and all of what you say, I just think you’re hilarious.

d. Affirmation to Senator Binion for the conversation we had today, it was so deep, and I appreciated it and you make me rethink my life and I love that.

e. Just an announcement, this is kind of petty but in the best way. I just want you all to know that VPSL Roach does not use salt, so watch yourself if you want seasoned food.

1. VPSL Roach: On my SOUP! Who on this earth puts salt in their soup? XIV. Adjournment – 9:59pm

A. Motion to Adjourn by Senator Reichardt B. Seconded by Senator Binion
