44.1 SMHC Leadership group

- Geoff provided feedback including:- Date Claimer: 30th August 2012- Richard Nelson form Qld Alliance attended recent

meeting and spoke about the MH commission. New approaches in mental health, closer relationships between government and non-government sectors.

- Addressing bed blocking on the wards NGO’s can provide services and work closely with clinicians who have reduced time available.

- Promote recovery in the community, working together, forming relationships with Medicare locals.

- Shift in focus regarding funding of care, money to go to individual consumers/clients to spend on their recovery. Emphasis on collaborative working within NGO’s consider “who are we, what can we do, what are our strengths, how do we promote our service”

- Website – Michael added that the website is constantly updated, can add job vacancies, links to NGO sites, reports this is working well and encourage all to promote.

4.2 Working parties

MH week

- Michael Roennfeldt provided a power point presentation to help us raise awareness.

- Zoe Cunningham gave feedback on sanity Fair preparation. Partnership with Mt Gravatt community centre.....

- Michael also noted pre fair gig organised for 24/08/12 Trinity Place, Woolloongabba lunch time.

- Quiz Night to be organised, pre event fund raiser, details to come.

- Special thanks to Lori for organising BBQ’s $4,597 raised.

- Bernadette Parker Karakan happy to join working party or provide team member if not available.

Sanity Fair Working PartyNext meeting 16/08/12

Members to support and advertise the event. Attend pre event fund raiser’s. Contact Sanity fair working party for information.

4.3 Guest speaker

Ivan Frkovic

- Key messages included evidence that better health care systems around the world have a stronger NGO community.

- 17 Hospital & Health Services with independent hospital boards that will be reaching out to NGO’s via their health services.

- The difficulties of Activity Based Funding (ABF) measuring health services. Increased activity = increased $. While NGO’s are based on output. What activity can NGO’s capture?

- Ivan also outlined the possible future with the National Disability Insurance Scheme if implemented. Money not going to NGO’s but to individuals to purchase services.

- Ivan highlighted this is a changing environment and advised the importance of the collaborative to actively engage in discussions with Qld Alliance.

- Work collaboratively – advocate and inform.1) become a service provider of choice (marketing) 2) become an employer of choice, to increase workforce attract and retain staff.3) be the service provider that people choose to refer to. Look for your niche.

4.4 Recovery & Resilience Team

- Carolyn Coombes presented information about the Recovery and Resilience Team part of South Metro Mental Health Services staff trained in therapies to aid recovery of those affected by recent disasters.

- Referrals welcomed – clients may have been involved in 2011 floods, hurricane Yatsi, Japanese tsunami or Christ Church earthquakes.

- Funded until June 2013. Not well advertised so word of mouth important to find those in need. Persons may note anxiety, hyper vigilance and/or anger, if not appropriate for this service staff can assess and refer on to appropriate services. See web site for more detail.

4.5 Karakan Training - Bernadette Parker provided information about current training Karakan are providing – see flyer.

- Also noted vacancies 20 hours per week available – community access support, client can be using other agencies.

4.6 Forum Qld Alliance & Activate

Round Tables to Return.

- Carla provided information about a planned forum organised by Activate and Qld Alliance – Professor Parks will be visiting Brisbane he is an international speaker and director of Misouri Mental Health Service USA, talking at a strategic level about meeting physical healthcare needs alongside mental health care. SMHC members are invited to attend

- Vicky Jacobson will be organising the next Round Table. Law matters around mental health, await flyer with details.

4.7 Cassie Masters info - Cassie informed the group about her research project.- The Provision of Recovery-Orientated Mental Health

Services in South East Queensland: The perspective of Leaders within the Non-Government Sector.

4.8 Kate O’Keefe - Vulcana women’s Circus Workshops- No age limit - No physical restrictions

8 Weeks of FREE circus workshops that develop physical strength and emotional resilience with a view to aidingrecovery for women who identify as having a mental illness. There will be one 2 hour workshop each week.
