PROGRAM NOTE Mirror Mirror was written during the Summer and Fall of 2018 and was edited during the Spring of 2019, this piece is dedicated to the memory of novelist/director Hu Bo (20 July 1988 – 12 October 2017). Movements:

NOTE TO PERFORMERS This score consists of five contrasting and somewhat ambient movements. There is a considerable amount of interpretive freedom in this score, therefore the performers are encouraged to navigate their own way through these movements quite freely (see notes before each movement). Generally, the surface layer of most of these movements is diatonic and somewhat consonant, there are additionally several layers of articulation, dynamic swells and bowing effects that are overlaid over these simple diatonic gestures in order to problematize the surface layer. The performers should make extra effort to blur and muddy this diatonic layer by exaggerated the other layers mentioned above (think of this as a relationship between consonance and dissonance). Pitch and noise play equal roles in this piece and both should constantly be at odds with one another creating a sense of struggle, tension and occasional moments of reconciliation between these two extremes.

Kyrie II ( part 1 q=80_85 )The quarter note pulse should be executed rather freely, the performers can ever so slightly phase in and out of time with one another throughout this movement, however stepwise material within parenthesis should adhere to a regular pulse and act as a sort of scafolding for the material around it, pay close attention to bow positions from measure to measure, like a medieval clocktower, quasi-mechanical but not always precise.
