A PLC is an ongoing process used to establish a school wide culture that develops teacher leadership explicitly focused on building and sustaining school improvement efforts. Generally, PLCs are composed of teachers, although administrators and support staff routinely participate. In some schools, PLCs are extended to community members and students, as appropriate. Math in Focus-‐ The Singapore Approach is the newest program to incorporate the widely used Singapore approach to math. Two key ways that the Singapore approach differs from more traditional programs are:

Launching the MYP is the first step in this. This session will include language teachers. Planning for meet the teacher’s day, welcome letters per grade and reviewing class lists to get your classrooms ready will also be discussed in this session. PRESENTERS JULIETA CARRILLO – PYP Coordinator Julieta is a bilingual teacher and learning specialist. She has two Bachelor´s Degrees, one on Graphic Design and one in Kindergarten Education. She is also an Apple Certified Teacher and an IB Educator since 2010. Julieta has worked in many different bilingual international schools in Mexico City for more than 20 years, both as Spanish and English teacher with preschool, kindergarten and primary children. She was a founding teacher of a leading school, The Churchill School. This school was the first PYP authorized school in Mexico City in 1999. She has been their PYP Coordinator for the last 2 years. As PYP Coordinator she took Colegio Williams and Colegio Internacional de México through the authorization process working closely with students and teachers. She considers technology to be at the center of education and is also an Apple Certified Teacher. As an IB Educator she has been training teachers and administrators in Regional and on-‐site workshops throughout Latin America. As a Site Visitor she takes part in the leading teams that IB sends to authorize and evaluate schools that implement the PYP Programme.

ANDREW JOHNSON – MYP Coordinator Andrew has been an IB educator for the last seventeen years, including 7 with the MYP and 14 with the diploma. During that time he has worked in three leading dual language IB schools in Latin America: the Colegio Anglo Colombiano, The English School in Bogotá and the Academia Britanica Cuscatleca in San Salvador. Andrew performed every role in these schools, from classroom teacher to Head of Middle School. He believes passionately that MYP gives us the opportunity to create a relevant, truly engaging and academically rigorous learning experience for our students, which will prepare them for life in the 21st century. Andrew is excited to be involved in the growth and development of MIS with the addition of a Middle School.

ERIKA VELEZ – SSS Coordinator, Deputy Head of School – PLC Leader Erika describes herself as an inquirer by nature and an active learner. Erika’s educational expertise lies in the fields of Early Childhood Education, Primary Education, Special Needs, Curriculum Development and Design, Bilingualism, the Primary Years Program (IB),Middle Years Program (IB) , Language Acquisition, ,Differentiated Instruction Trainer/Coach, Program Implementation and Professional Learning Community ( PLCs) Leader. She is passionate about proving herself to be flexible, adaptable, and sensitive to the needs of a learning community. Erika welcomes the opportunity to take on new challenges and apply best practices at The Magellan International School. She is very enthusiastic about international education and fully devoted to the goals of the IB organization, supporting the learning community in developing intellectual, personal, and social skills to live, learn, and work in a global and changing world. She has been teaching and in educational leadership roles the last 20 years. Erika has worked in well established and growing international schools in Colombia and US like Altamira International School, British International School and Atlanta International School. Erika has a broad experience with curriculum design and admisnistration, as well as implementing new programs.

Reconocida investigadora en procesos de dificultades de aprendizaje y evaluación del Instituto para la Investigación Educativa y el Desarrollo Pedagógico –IDEP. Miembro del equipo asesor de la implementación de ciclos académicos de la Maestría en Investigación Social Interdisciplinaria de la Universidad Distrital Francisco José de Caldas. PRESENTERS TOD BAKER –IT Coordinator/Design Teacher Tod has a passion for the intersection of literacy, technology and inquiry-‐driven learning. With its bilingual, inquiry-‐driven approach to learning, Tod is thrilled to be teaching at MIS. When not creating something cool and awesome with his students, In addition to teaching, Tod has advised yearbook publications and photo clubs; he has coached soccer and robotics teams; and he has served as the subject chair for ESL and Technology. In addition to numerous presentations within his school community, he has presented at ISTE in San Antonio, Learning 2.0 in Shanghai and the Learning Summit in Beijing.

NURIA CAMPOS G3 LT Nuria has been teaching for 8 years at different English immersion schools in El Salvador and throughout the primary years. For the past four years and prior to coming to MIS, she taught at an authorized PYP school (Colegio La Floresta) where she became fully interested and involved with the program. Her first experience with the Primary Years Program was with a first grade classroom where she discovered the wonders of working with a child-‐centered and inquiry based curriculum. With this new discovery of what PYP students could achieve, she began to research information on what authentic assessment is and how it is possible to learn through the language according to the International Baccalaureate Organization. She led the team which wrote the assessment and language policies.

MARISA LEON Head of School Mrs. María Isabel León, “Marisa”, is deeply committed to international and multilingual education. She has worked in three countries (the USA, Venezuela, and Colombia) as a Primary teacher, Middle School Principal and High School Principal. She completed the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program. As a result of this experience, Marisa is an enthusiastic supporter of the IB. She received her BA (History) from Bryn Mawr College and her MA (Educational Administration) from New Mexico Highlands University. As a consequence of her international experience, Marisa is a strong advocate of an education that contains academic rigor, that stresses the link between the sciences and the arts, that appreciates different cultures, and that exposes children to adventure and service.

Karla Martinez – IB Consultant Karla will provide our school, MYP Coordinator and MYP teachers with support and mentoring while in the MYP candidacy face. Karla Martinez has been assigned as our consultant by the regional office who will conduct the mandatory consultation visit and provide a specified number of hours of distance mentoring in preparation for the verification visit.

Teresa Sadurni – Head of Preschool Teresa Sadurní has worked with young children for almost twenty years. Brought up in a multicultural family, she has Mexican, Italian, Spanish and American roots. She has worked at bilingual schools in Mexico and in Spain, both as Preschool and Elementary teacher. She has been Preschool and Elementary Principal at the Escuela Sierra Nevada, one of the largest bilingual schools in Mexico City, for the last 5 years. She is a solid constructivist who believes that all children must be given the opportunity to learn in a warm and enriching environment where there are constant challenges for them to become confident in all the key development areas, as well as grow in independence and self-‐esteem. She believes an ideal environment for a child to develop these traits and skills should take into account that children have different learning styles. Integrating the different content areas into meaningful units of work, allows children to learn through the exploration of the world around them. This helps them develop a critical mind to become knowledgeable, responsible citizens and good communicators.

PRESENTERS KATIE MALINSKI , LCSW-‐SSS Behavioral Consultant Katie Malinski, LCSW, is a licensed child & family therapist and parenting coach. TRACY TANNER , LPC, LMFT-‐ SSS Social and Emotional Learning Consultant Tracy earned her Bachelor's degree in psychology with a minor in Spanish from the University of Texas at Austin. She graduated with honors from St. Edward's University with a Master's in Counseling. In addition to her private practice, Tracy works as a psychotherapist at Austin Child Guidance Center, the oldest children's mental health agency in the Austin area. Tracy is also co-‐founder of GirlTalk Therapy (www.GirlTalkTherapy.com). Tracy's clinical expertise includes trauma work, caring for the social and emotional needs of gifted and talented youth, child and adolescent group therapy, and play therapy.


PRESENTERS Mindy Dennis – HOUGHTON MIFFLIN SINGAPORE MATH TRAINER Mindy Dennis began her career as an educator after graduating from Eastern Kentucky University in 1998. Her teaching career began in a 5th and 6th grade classroom in Lexington, Kentucky. Since then her experiences include teaching children from the elementary level through high school. She has also tutored all levels for Math and Reading. Mindy is currently the administrator and teacher for an academy in Lexington. Along with her teaching in the classroom, Mindy has spent the last year providing training in Math in Focus for teachers all over the country. Mindy has continued her study and professional development by attending Math in Focus Study focus groups and the Train the Trainers Institute, as well as studying under the Math in Focus U.S. contributing authors, Patsy Kanter and Andy Clark. In addition to her Math in Focus training, Mindy is currently expanding her knowledge of Everyday Counts Calendar Math and has worked with Patsy Kanter and Beth Ardell, who are contributing authors. Mindy enjoys this opportunity to help support and share her love of education with fellow teachers all over the country.

SUSAN D’SOUZA -‐ HOUGHTON MIFFLIN SINGAPORE MATH TRAINER Susan D'Souza has worked with educators and students for 17 years in a variety of settings, both in the US and abroad. She has taught Singapore Math since 2004, having started with Primary Math and switched to Math in Focus, which she vastly prefers for the wealth of teacher helps it offers. Susan currently provides professional development and coaching across the US for Math in Focus, introducing fellow educators to Singapore Math’s superb pedagogy and instructional strategies. She also teaches a Math in Focus middle school class with an online component. Susan has studied under US consulting authors Andy Clark and Dr. Richard Bisk, as well as Marshall Cavendish Principal Dr. Yeap Ban Har in Math in Focus Study Groups, at the Singapore Math Summer Institute, and at annual Math in Focus Trainers’ Institutes. Over her career in education, Susan served as the Assistant Director of Pedagogy at Moyo Mucuro School in Mozambique, training Mozambican teachers and developing foundational literacy curricula for elementary students learning Portuguese as a Second Language. She achieved a 97% literacy rate in the implementation year. In Mozambique, she first encountered Singapore Math and learned there was a better way to think about and teach mathematics. She put feet to her discovery back at home in the US, first teaching Singapore Math in the first grade classroom, then moving to fifth grade. Along the way, her own understanding of math was completely transformed. In her volunteer time, Susan has enjoyed tutoring illiterate adults, for which she was awarded the 1999 National Tutor of the Year from Literacy Volunteers of America. Susan D’Souza earned dual Bachelors of Arts in Linguistics and Jewish Studies from Indiana University, and her Masters of Arts in Urban Education with concentrations in ESL and Bilingual Education from New Jersey City University. She now resides among the horse farms of Kentucky with her family and a parade of other fascinating creatures.

evening sessions that focus on a combination of our school programs and curriculum with educational trends, social emotional learning and more interesting topics. Every lead teacher is required to sign up for one of these evening sessions. Teacher assistants are not required to sign up for these evenings, but are highly encouraged to participate especially if you are new to the MIS community. If you are interested in joining one evening please sign up.
