STATEMENT FROM THE ORGANIZERS>
The ECOWAS Commission, the Government of the Republic of Cote d’Ivoire and AME TradeLtd, were delighted to host the 500 plus delegates and the nearly 2000 visitors to ECOMOF2018, the Second ECOWAS Mining and Petroleum Forum, which took place 10 – 12 December2018 at the Sofitel Hotel Ivoire, in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire.
ECOMOF is an initiative established by the ECOWAS Commission following recommendationsthat a regional mining and petroleum forum was required as part of the activities to promoteand develop the mining and oil potentials of Member States. Held under the theme “Strategiesto Promote the Development of West Africa’s Mining and Petroleum Industries”, the ECOMOF2018 was organized with the following objectives in mind:
• Promote and develop the mining and oil potentials of Member States.• Help ensure the socio-economic integration within the West African region.• Harmonise legal, regulatory and taxation instruments.• Catalyse and develop artisanal and small-scale mining.• Establish, develop and organize geological, mining and oil databases for Member States.• Develop human resources and create a network of experts.• Use the mining and petroleum industries to develop community infrastructure.• Add value to mining and petroleum products and strengthen trade in these products.• Promote corporate social responsibility and increase stakeholders’ awareness of the de-
velopment issues of their local communities.

ECOMOF 2018 RECOMMENDATIONS>
The second edition of the ECOWAS Mining & Petroleum Forum and Exhibition, named ECOMOF,held from 10 to 12 December 2018 in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire under the patronage of his ExcellencyAlassane Ouattara, President of the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire and under the patronage and theeffective presence of his Excellency Mr. Daniel Kablan Duncan, Vice President of the Republic ofIvory Coast.
The event, that took place under the theme: Strategies to promote the development of WestAfrica’s Mining and Petroleum Industries, featured over 50 speakers addressing the followingtopics:
• Diversifying ECOWAS’ mining industry• Investment solutions for West African mining and oil & gas operations• Extractive industries, development of local content and of riparian communities• Extractive industries, an engine for growth in West Africa, strategies for developing base
metals and gold operations• Ecological solutions to mitigate the risk of long-term environmental impacts and reduce
project costs• Strategies to promote employment and progress of women in the mining industry• Planning and strategies for closing mines, strengths of developing local capacity for treat-
ment
In addition, ECOMOF 2018 conference featured workshop rooms dedicated to highlighting themining and hydrocarbons potential in the ECOWAS region.
After two days of productive debates, deliberations and networking, ECOMOF 2018 offeredthe following recommendations for the sustainable future of the extractive industries in theECOWAS region:
1. Pooling experiences to develop a harmonized, transparent, predictable, mutually beneficialregulatory framework for all stakeholders (state, mining companies, subcontractors andpopulations) to attract investment for deposit valuation;
2. Develop geophysical and geological infrastructure to international standards to improveknowledge and better promote geological potential;
3. Research and develop customized and appropriate financing mechanisms (stock exchange)for mineral and petroleum exploration, construction and development of support infra-structure for the exploration, transformation of mineral substances, hydrocarbons and gasfor more added value;
4. Implement policies for upgrading, building capacity and improving the competitivenessof local SMEs, in partnership with the mining industry, local suppliers to better meet therequirements of the mining and petroleum sectors, and ensure sustainable developmentof local content;
5. Create and develop mechanisms for the integration and participation of locals in the capitalof operating companies to generate a class of national entrepreneurs in the sector of mine,hydrocarbons and gas in the ECOWAS region;
ECOMOF 2018 was by measure of achieving the goals set out for the event and also overallparticipant feedback. We look forward to seeing the recommendations of the conference beingimplemented and to discuss the developments in the next edition of ECOMOF.
