Page 1 Google .kml Guide 5/2016 MISS DIG User Guide Create a Google map layer (.kml) Use this guideline to create a map layer (.kml) with an online applicaon found on-line in GOOGLE Maps. This file can be uploaded to MISS DIG and converted to a shape file for the map database of your facility code(s). To begin, sign into a GOOGLE account at www.google.com. If you don’t have one, use the link provided on the homepage to create one. On the next screen, CLICK “MAPS” Once you are logged in, CLICK the apps icon in the Upper right-hand corner of the screen. It looks like a checkerboard. CLICK 2 CLICK 1 To draw a shape, LEFT CLICK and drag the curser. CLICK to change direcon and DOUBLE CLICK to terminate your shape at its origin. Upon import, MISS DIG will add a 250 foot buffer to line data. No buffer will be added to shapes. It’s OK to add more than one shape or line to your map layer but limit each layer you create to one (1) facility type. Then CLICK “Your places” on the GOOGLE Maps menu. CLICK 4 CLICK 5 CLICK 3 CLICK the menu icon in the upper leſt hand corner of the next screen. CLICK “Maps” on the “Your Places” menu that appears on the next screen. CLICK 6 CLICK “CREATE MAP” at the boom of your map list. Use the search bar to navigate to any place, street, address or intersecon. Use your cursor wheel to ZOOM to your work area or double click to ZOOM. Once you’ve posioned the map, you’re ready to draw. To create a shape, CLICK the “Draw a line” tool under the search bar. It looks like this….. Then CLICK “Add line or shape” Start! CLICK the “Base map” drop down to change the base map to satellite view. Add places to a map layer by drawing or import data. You can import CSV, TSV, KML, KMZ OR XLSX files.

    LABEL YOUR MAP LAYER

    To name your map layer,

    CLICK the 3-dot, icon as shown.

    (3) Options available:

    Rename this layer

    Delete this layer

    Open Data Table

    CLICK “Rename this layer”

    To name your shape, CLICK the shape.

    CLICK the pencil tool to edit

    CLICK “SAVE” when complete

    EXPORT TO A .KML FILE

    To name this layer,

    use the following format:

    Facility code(underscore)date created

    Example: MITEC2_2.6.15

    Limit each layer to one (1) facility type; e.g wtr, ele, sani

    Add a layer for each facility.

    CLICK the 3-dot icon

    to export the file.

    Then CLICK

    “Export to KML”

    CLICK the drop down menu to see each layer you created.

    Select a layer to export. CLICK “Download” to export your .kml file to

    the download folder of your computer. If this file is large, it may convert

    to a .kmz (zip).

    Email these files to [email protected]

    PROCESS COMPLETE!
