• Mexican American War

• Mexico’s independence

• Spain gave no more money

• Soldiers got no money

• Frustration

• Vengeance

• Beat Indian @ Mission Santa Ines in 1824

• Revolt @ La Purisima

• 1 month Indians took over mission

• Soldiers arrive (Monterey)

• 3 hr. battle (Indians lost)

• Indians left mission, except few in hiding

• Mission couldn’t function

• 5 hours a day• They made adobe bricks• They wove cotton into cloth or wool into blankets• Made their own shoes• Enforced by the soldiers

• Per year– Men got 2 woolen breech clothes and suit of

cotton cloth – Girls and women got gowns, skirts, and

woolen blankets

• The Native Americans traded the following things instead of having money:– soap– cigars– horses– cattle– hides– tallow

Condition today

• 1934 restoration began• By Civilian Conservation Corps• Under Union Oil officials• Had to be a historical monument• Had to have enough land • Historical information came from:

– Archaeological digs– Clay dug from hillsides to make adobe bricks– A lot of hard work

• Currently has a new visitor center

• Did you know this was the 11th mission founded?• Did you know that the Roman Catholic Church had a rule

that no mission could be within 7 miles from any city, but that Mission La Purisima was the exception to that rule?

• In 1806, 220 people (mostly Chumash Indians) died at the mission, primarily due to disease

• Did you know this mission currently has 1,928 acres?• Did you know this mission originally had 300,000

acres!!??
