GOSPEL MEDITATION Where would you go if the world was ending? What would you do? The last decade has seen a rise in doomsday prepping, the marketing of survival techniques, and a sea of products designed for you to weather the apocalypse. “The days will come when there will not be left a stone upon another that will not be thrown down,” Jesus warns in today’s Gospel. On the one hand, he is referring to the literal downfall of the city of Jerusalem. Indeed, many of his prophecies here have come true over the last few millennium. Nations have indeed “risen against nations,” kingdoms against kingdoms. Surf any world news website today alone, and you will see stories of “powerful earthquakes, famines, and plagues.” Jesus’ advice to his disciples, however, isn’t to build a bunker. It’s to persevere in faith … which won’t be easy. “They will seize and persecute you … you will be handed over … you will be hated because of my name.” This warning, too, has come to pass in the Church throughout history in state-sponsored persecutions and martyrdoms. Jesus is the Messiah, but his first coming was not a coming of earthly victory. Any disciple of his can expect a challenge. The coming of Christ didn’t disrupt our free will. Evil still exists and sometimes even appears to triumph. This does not mean God has abandoned His people! Jesus reminds the disciples, and us, of his constant presence. “I myself shall give you a wisdom in speaking.” In other Gospel passages, Jesus promises and sends the Holy Spirit upon his followers. The presence of God is real in our lives, no matter what trials come our way. It’s tempting to be distracted or dismayed by natural destruction and moral evil in the world. But the Church has weathered greater storms. The sacredness of the human person endures. We can have hope! This day and every day, we can persevere in hope and trust in God.

“You will even be handed over by parents, brothers, relatives, and friends, and they will put some of you to death. You will be hated by all because of my name, but not a hair on your head will be destroyed. By your perseverance you will secure your lives.” ~Lk 21:16-19

Thursday is the Feast of Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

On the feast of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, we celebrate the fact that Our Lady’s parents brought her to the Temple at the age of three and handed her over to live there for a long period as a consecrated virgin where she might exclusively contemplate God. There is a special beauty to this feast since it highlights the fact that Our Lady was chosen even before time began. She is called the root of Jesse (Isaiah, 11:1) from which Our Lord Jesus Christ would be born.

Baptism, expectant parents are required to attend Baptism preparation. A Pre-Jordan session will be held for all parents preparing for their baby’s baptism on Sunday, November 24, at 12 p.m. in the parish hall. Since parents are seen as their child’s primary teachers,

the Pre-Jordan preparation session seeks to offer parents both the support of the community and an opportunity for reassessing their own faith and responsibilities. For more information or to register for the session, contact Melissa Laverty in the parish office.

FAITH FORMATION CANCELLATION PROCEDURES

Parents, in the event of inclement weather, you will receive an email from Melissa, Coordinator of Religious Education, if classes are cancelled. If you do not receive regular emails from the parish, kindly contact the parish office to ensure we have your most recent email address. You may also call the parish office on Sunday morning to check if classes are cancelled for the day.

Presented by the Diocese of Scranton, the workshop will focus on practical ways of bringing lifelong faith formation to parishes. For more information, contact Melissa in the parish office.

Beginning Tuesday, November 19, join us on Tuesdays at 10:15 a.m. in the parish hall for the Little Rock Scripture Study. Using both videos and written materials, this program is designed to help bring Catholics to a greater understanding of the Bible and an

awareness of God’s living presence in the Scriptures, as well as an appreciation of how the Bible can be applied to daily life. For more information, call or stop by the parish office or simply join us on each Tuesday at 10:15 a.m. in the parish hall.

RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS

Going the Extra Mile So often in life, people are concerned about the minimum requirements. What is the minimum I must do to get a certain grade? What is the minimum I need to do to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation? What exactly do I have to do to make my boss happy? This concern does not stop with everyday life but continues into our relationship with God. What exactly is required of me for salvation? How much time, talent, and treasure are enough? Jesus does not call us to this way of life, but instead to a life of unbounding generosity and surrender. Jesus said, “If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.” The minimum requirement is one mile; however, we are not to be disciples of minimum requirements and checking off boxes. We are to go the extra mile because that is how we bear witness to the transforming power of Jesus Christ. That is how we change lives and share the grace and love we have received in abundance. Nothing ever changes by doing the minimum. There is no real glory given to God by responding to His call with the minimum. Imagine a world where all of us good stewards give without ceasing and go far beyond the minimum requirements. Our world would be a very different place. So, what is stopping us? — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS

Quotes from “Footprints” by Margaret Fishback Powers

For over 43 million Americans, there is a thin line: between eviction and home, between hunger and health, between unemployment and work, between anxiety and stability. This line

is the Poverty Line. For a family of four, that line is $24,257 a year. The Catholic Campaign for Human Development is dedicated to breaking the cycle of poverty by funding community programs that encourage independence. You are essential to its success. Your generous donations will give those

in poverty the support they need to make lasting changes. Together, we can make a difference in families and communities across the United States. There will be a 2nd collection next week. Please donate prayerfully and generously. ~ Thank you.
