MISSIONARY CO-OP COLUMBAN SISTERS Sister Carmen Maldonado,SSC from Los Angeles, California, will speak to our parish family during the celebration of the Mass on the follow-ing dates: August 2 and 3, for our mission appeal under the 2014 Mis-sionary Co-operation Plan of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles. She served in Chile, South America for many years and at present based in Los Angeles.

Sister Carmen will enlighten us to the struggles and needs of the frail, neglected, elderly and forgotten in the remote and distant lands of Chile, China/Hong Kong, Korea, Pakistan, Myanmar (Burma), Philip-pines and Peru. The Columban Sisters are missionaries in these and other areas around the globe. Your financial support will enable them to continue to spread the Good News (Gospel) and offer love, comfort, care and supportive services to those in need. You can Make a differ-ence in the lives of others for years to come.

JACKPOT In our lottery- and sweepstakes-obsessed culture, it is common to ask ourselves or others what they would do if they won. In today’s first reading, Solomon certainly hits the jackpot. What prize could be great-er than having God Almighty agree to give you whatever you ask for? Out of all the things he could have asked for, Solomon chose to ask for understanding, and was rewarded with it. We would do well to wonder what we would ask for if God made us the same offer. Actually God does make us the same offer each and every day, by granting us anoth-er day of life, a bit of the earth’s goods, some gift or ability, some call to goodness, some portion of the divine will. Each of these is a “prize.” We should stop and examine what we are going to do with our prize: keep it or use it selfishly, or put it at the service of the spread of the gospel? Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION By the dawn of the fourteenth century, the sacrament of confirmation was ripe for a rescue, since vast numbers of the faithful never received it, and when it was celebrated, it was done so in isolation from baptism and Eucharist. A bishop named William Durandus set out to reclaim this liturgy, but he had a creative touch and added some things into the mix that had never been thought of before. One was a slap. Oddly, he replaced the kiss of peace at the end of confirmation with a slap on the cheek that endured to modern times. This “wakeup call” was relat-ed in his imagination to a custom in the military, wherein ceremonies of knighthood and investiture involved a symbolic wound as a sign of willingness to suffer. Within every congregation today there are people who have memories of fretting through their confirmation liturgies, anxious to know how enthusiastic a slap the bishop would bestow. Durandus loved symbolism and had a reason for every ritual and prac-tice, but his creative spin on the celebration shows how sadly adrift confirmation was from its anchorage in baptism, how far off-course from its home port of the eucharistic community. —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

“GOD HAD SOMETHING IN MIND FOR ME” –Nick Calzada, Music and Liturgy Director For Nick Calzada, our new Music and Liturgy Director, an interest in church music came about rather unexpectedly. “I was playing piano for the choir at my high school [Paraclete High School, Lancaster]. The choir teacher recommended that I go to the ‘Music Ministry Alive’ workshop in St. Paul, Minnesota. I really didn’t like church music much – it wasn’t ‘cool’ enough. But the experience totally changed my life. There were 150 kids there, and I saw in each one of them an extraordi-nary faith and an understanding of the spirituality behind the music.” It was there that Nick first learned about liturgy planning. “Everything starts from the readings,” he explains. In planning a Mass, we ask, “What is the main theme that connects all the readings, and how do we communicate that theme to everyone in the worshiping communi-ty?” Good liturgical music ties all the elements of the Mass together, without distracting from it. The music truly allows you to come out of yourself, to unite yourself to the Mass, from the moment you come in until the moment you leave. You had an experience of God. And you weren’t thinking about the music.” The eldest of five children, Nick began piano lessons when he was eight years old, and by fourteen he was accompanying every week at Mass at his home parish, Our Lady of the Desert, in Little Rock, Cali-fornia, in the Antelope Valley. But his experience is not limited to church music. He is also an accomplished jazz pianist and composer. He earned a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Piano Performance from Califor-nia State University Northridge. He directed the 2011 and 2012 Jazz Masses at the Religious Education Congress in Anaheim, which fea-tured his original jazz composition. Most recently, he featured his composed Mass of the Holy Spirit with the students of St. Joseph the Worker School at the 2013 Holy Childhood Association Mass at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angeles.

The Music and Liturgy Director collaborates with the pastor, associate pastors, and Liturgy Committee to oversee the music and worship pro-grams. He has management responsibility for all liturgical ministries. Coordinating the music program involves working with our eight choirs to assure that all our Masses and celebrations are prayerful, reverent, and welcoming. Looking forward to his new role, Nick hopes to bring people together so that everyone can participate and praise our Lord through the Mass. “This is a great opportunity to live out a calling that I think God has for me.”

BULLETIN AND MASS ANNOUNCEMENTS The deadline (strictly observed) for submission of Bulle-tin and Mass announcements is the previous Monday at noon. Deliver a copy of the bulletin or Mass announce-ment to the Parish Center or email it to Angela Escobar: [email protected]. To submit a photo to accompany the bulletin text, send a digital file (jpeg or TIF), color or black/white, 300 dpi. See the front cover for the parish mailing address and fax number. For more information please contact Angela Escobar, (818) 341-6634, ext. 1003.

PARISH REGISTRATION To promote a spirit of belonging, we encourage all who worship here to become registered parishioners. Having registered makes the process much easier when it is time for infant baptism, school or religious education enrollment, weddings, when asked to be a baptismal or confirmation sponsor, and funerals. Simply attending Mass here does not make you a registered parishioner. Please call or visit the Parish Center to request a regis-tration form or complete the form online at the parish website: www.sjwchurch.com. Also, please contact the Parish Center if you have a new address or phone num-ber. The staff is able to serve you better if the parish records are accurate.

REQUESTING USE OF PARISH FACILITIES Parish and School groups that would like to reserve any facility in the parish must contact Angela Escobar in the Parish Center (818) 341-6634, ext. 1003. Only rooms reserved in advance are open. If your group needs to cancel a reservation, please let Angela know so that the room can be made available to another group. Also, if your group needs a particular room arrangement, please bring a copy of the requested floor plan to the Parish Center a week ahead.
