reached out toAmerican MaglevPresident and CEOTony Morris about howhis proposed railproject could havehelped the conventionindustry avoid thetraffic jam of the agesduring the MegaConweekend. "Our proposal includes$40 million for a'circulator' thatconnects theconvention center tothe Hilton Orlando,Rosen Centre, HyattOrlando, PointeOrlando and RosenPlaza facilities," saidMorris, noting it wouldbe ideal to make sureconvention trafficnever clogs up thesurrounding roads likeit did on Saturday dueto thousands ofMegaCon fans. Kathie Canning, executive director withthe convention center, welcomed any ideas tohelp her team alleviatefuture congestioncaused by bigconventions. "New transportationoptions like rail wouldhave definitely helpedus. The moretransportation optionswe have the better,"Canning said. Currently, most ofI-Drive is serviced by atrolley, pedicabs andother shuttles, but theyall typically require theuse of the roads -which also need to bewidened to

Canning said thecombination ofMegaCon, along withother events at theconvention center andnearby hotels, createdthe perfect storm ofwhat can happen ifsuccessful showscome to town on thesame weekend. And, unfortunately, most of MegaCon'sattendees and otherconvention areatravelers happened tofind themselves inbumper-to-bumpertraffic that turned afive-minute drive into amulti-hour experience. "It was a phenomena,"she said about theweekend, noting thatuntil a rail system isactually builtconnecting her centerto the rest of CentralFlorida, her team willlook into how toaddress the trafficissue for futureMegaCons and more.
