TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME SEPTEMBER 27, 2020Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time September 27, 2020

FOLLOWING THROUGH ON YOUR “YES” TO GODReflection on Matthew 21:28-32

Of course, actions speak louder than words; this familiar maxim certainly gets at some of the foundational meaning of today’s parable. The son who initially said “no” to his father, yet eventually carried out his instructions, rises up in our estimation over the son who said “yes” to his father’s request, but didn’t do it in the end, even though he may have had good intentions.

I suspect that most of us can relate to both sons at different times and in various circumstances in our lives. We truly love the Lord, we truly try to follow Him in our words and actions, but we often fall and fail. Still, we carry on in God’s mercy.

Let this parable be an encouragement to follow-through on the “Yes” to God we made in baptism. For the sacrament of baptism is our common vocation, our primary vocation, renewed in each celebration of the Eucharist. In baptism we said “Yes” to intentional discipleship, following Jesus through our commitments of worship, growing, service, connection, and giving. Take some time this week to reflect on each of these commitments, asking God to help you be firm in your follow-throughs.

1. Worshipping – As I desire to in all things and all ways be centered in Christ, how do I participate consciously and actively in the worship and prayer life of the community, especially the weekly Eucharist, as well as personal prayer and the full sacramental life of the Church?

2. Growing – As I seek always to be equipped well for discipleship, how is my commitment to a lifelong journey of human and spiritual growth, to be formed in my faith during each season of my life?

3. Serving – As my faith compels me to the mission of evangelization (the Great Commission to “go, make, teach, baptize”), how do I serve the mission of the Church in some concrete, meaningful way, especially caring for the poor and marginalized?

4. Giving – As the Catholic tradition invites me into a lifestyle of stewardship, how am I an “intentional giver” – sacrificially and proportionally sharing my time, talent and treasure?

5. Connecting – As discipleship is lived in relationship, how am I engaged in my parish family through some small group commitment, where holy encounter with Jesus and with others is lived, cherished, and a source of encouragement?

PRAYER TO OUR GUARDIAN ANGELO most faithful companion, appointed by our Heavenly Father to be my guardian, I thank you for your kindness, caring and love, and for the benefits you have obtained for me.

O holy Angel, watch over me while I sleep. Comfort me when I am sad. Avert dangers that threaten me, and warn me of those to come. Turn me away from sin, and inspire me to do good. Encourage me to penance when I fall, and reconcile me to God.

Do not leave me, heavenly guide. Comfort me in adversity, humble me in success, defend me in danger, and assist me in temptations, lest at any time I fall beneath them.

Offer up in the sight of the Divine Majesty my prayers and petitions, and all my charitable works, and help me persevere in grace until I enter into everlasting life. Amen.Sisters of Charity of Our Lady, Mother of the Church. My Treasured Catholic Prayers. Baltic, CT.
