KIDS ‘N COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ANNUAL REPORT

As the Carolina Hurricanes advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals last season, our fans were

not the only people who benefited from the thrilling finishes and Game 7 victories. The implementation

of the Beard-a-thon program allowed the Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation to

capitalize on each win to raise needed funds to support local children’s organizations. By encouraging

fans to grow beards in support of the team and the Foundation, we were able to take advantage of

each victory in order to better serve our community.

The Beard-a-thon during the playoffs was one of many ways in which the Kids ‘N Community

Foundation has made great strides in fundraising. The Foundation reached new heights over the

last two seasons, donating more money than any other two-year period since its inception. Those

funds have been critical to the children’s organizations they have benefited, especially during trying

economic times.

The Kids ‘N Community Foundation works to improve the health, educational and social opportunities

in the lives of our young people, as they are the key to the long-term health of our communities. The

following report outlines some of the key efforts designed and implemented by the Hurricanes and

the Kids ‘N Community Foundation during the 2008-09 season. Among those efforts were grants of

more than $500,000 in cash to 43 local children’s organizations, along with the donation of nearly

700 items to schools, non-profits and churches for fundraising. The Pick Up a Book and Read

program reached new heights for pages read by participating students, and the number of youth

hockey players in the Triangle continued to increase.

As a Foundation, we owe a tremendous amount of gratitude to the players, coaches and staff of

the Hurricanes, for their support and commitment to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. We are

also grateful to our community partners, who continue to inspire our organization through their

dedication and commitment to our area. Thank you for your continued support of the Carolina

Hurricanes and the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

Sincerely,

Jim Rutherford

President and General Manager

to meet the educational, social, health and cultural needs of our

community by offering unique resources and financial support to

local youth-oriented organizations.

The Foundation is dedicated to supporting and developing programs

that benefit the children of North Carolina. Through partnerships

with committed organizations and individuals, the Foundation will

work to improve the health, educational and social opportunities in

the lives of our young people, as they are the key to the long-term

well-being of our community.

With ongoing support from annual special events and the corporate

community, the Foundation has funded scholarship programs, youth

hockey, educational and literacy efforts, children’s health programs,

the arts and other children-related initiatives.

Annually, the Foundation provides cash and in-kind donations

totaling about $1.5 million to charitable and educational programs.

Every member of the Hurricanes organization is actively involved in

community activities. The Hurricanes take great pride in the ability

CASH DONATIONSThe Carolina Hurricanes Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated a total of $506,220 to

45 different North Carolina children’s charities and foundations during the 2008-2009

season. Including last year’s donation record of $578,094, the Foundation’s two year

grant total is over $1 million, an unprecedented accomplishment. The Kids ‘N Community

Foundation donated the money in a fall and spring grant cycle during the season. The total

amount donated speaks highly to the generosity of the Caniacs, who understood the

importance of philanthropy during trying economic times.

Each awarded grant must be applied to the health, educational or underserved population

needs of local youth. All grant recipients must specify how they will use the funds and

provide updates on the progress of the funded programs. Stormy and a pre-med student from NC State put on the Slip, Slop, Slap skit at Method Road Community Center – a program funded through a Kids ‘N Community Foundation grant.

“It’s a lot of fun any time you can help with the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. The people involved are doing a great job, and for us to be a part of it is pretty neat.”

— Scott Walker

Golf TournamentThe 11th Annual Golf Tournament took place on Monday, September 28, at Prestonwood Country Club. Foursomes of donors enjoyed a round of golf with a Hurricanes player, coach, broadcaster or front office executive. The Kids ‘N Community Foundation treated participants to a preseason game, followed by a VIP pairings party. The Golf Tournament and the silent and live auctions during the pairings party generated $55,000 for the Foundation.

Skate with the CanesSkate with the Canes took place on December 2, 2008. This event allowed fans of all ages to skate with Hurricanes players on the RBC Center ice, rotate through an autograph session, tour the locker room and participate in a photo session with players and coaches. Skate with the Canes raised $30,000 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. “It’s one of those once-in-a-lifetime kind of opportunities that these

guys do every year for charity. I’m just glad I can help out and get

something out of it for myself too.” —BillCorcoran, auctionwinner

Casino Night and Wine TastingThe charity Casino Night and Wine Tasting proved once again to be a hit among fans and members of the Hurricanes organization. The Roaring ‘20s theme provided guests with the opportunity to dress like flappers and mobsters as they mingled and played casino games at tables where players and coaches served as dealers. Highlights of the event included silent and live auctions. The live auction featured sought-after, unique experiences including a trip with the team, a dinner with the owner, coaches and general manager, and the chance to be a ‘Cane for a Day. The silent auction offered attendees the

opportunity to bid on autographed sports memorabilia, travel destinations, local entertainment and the very desirable players’ baskets, which include each player’s favorite things. These have become very elaborate in the four years since the players started making them, and the 24 of them alone mustered over $25,000 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. The Casino Night and Wine Tasting brought in over $178,000.

FUNDRAISINGThe Kids ‘N Community Foundation raises funds in a variety of ways each year. The three main annual fundraisers, the Golf Tournament, Skate with the Canes and Casino Night and Wine Tasting, raised over $263,000 for the Foundation in 2008-2009. Hurricanes players, coaches, broadcasters and front office executives attended these events, making them very memorable for the attendees. Thanks to BlackBerry for sponsoring both the Golf Tournament and the Casino Night and Wine Tasting.

In-Game AuctionsThe silent auctions during every home game are a very important ongoing annual fundraiser for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. The Canes’ lengthy run into the 2009 playoffs allowed for eight more home games, and in turn, eight more silent auctions. The in-game auctions raised $142,646, with over $42,000 coming from playoff auctions alone. In addition, online auctions from February through June of 2009 generated over $24,500.

Carolina Ale HouseThe local Carolina Ale House restaurants have lent a big hand to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation for the last two years. With their Points for Kids program, the Carolina Ale House donated $100 to the Foundation for every point the Hurricanes earned in the standings for a total of $10,000. The $2,750 raised from the sale of paper and magnetic “Hearts of the Hurricanes” during the Paper/Magnetic Hearts campaign also went to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. In addition, the Carolina Ale House hosts the annual Cool Bars tour, which includes raffles for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation at every event. Caniacs bought $20,180 worth of raffle tickets this year.

“Carolina Ale House is a proud supporter of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. The KNCF does an excellent job gifting local need-based organizations by researching the recipients and getting to know them firsthand. We are always confident our contributions to KNCF go to those who need it most.” spoken by Mindy Amerson, Marketing Coordinator, LM Restaurants, Inc.

The Kids ‘N Community Foundation also benefited from the following fundraisers:

• We Love the Hurricanes Luncheon hosted by the Raleigh Chamber of Commerce: Participants got a preview of the season from the head coach while having lunch with the coaching staff and players. The Raleigh Chamber of Commerce held this fundraiser to benefit the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

• Cable for a Cause: David Yurman and Bailey’s Fine Jewelry raised over $4,000 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation by donating 20 percent of the proceeds from the sale of any piece of David Yurman jewelry for a day in December.

• Valentine’s Day Mystery Cane T-Shirt Fundraiser: Mystery Autographed T-shirt sales generated over $8,500 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

“It’s been a great success. We’ve got a lot of people growing beards, but we’ve got a lot more people donating to their friends’ beards as well, which is a great way to support the team and our foundation.” — Doug Warf, Executive Director of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation

14 15

PLAyOFF FUNDRAISINGThe three thrilling playoff series brought exciting new fundraisers for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

KooziesEach round, the Foundation introduced special Hockey with Heart playoff koozies decorated with the most memorable moments from the regular season and the playoffs. Caniacs who gave a donation in exchange for a koozie might now have another way to remember one of Jussi Jokinen’s miraculous goals or Scott Walker’s game winner in Game Seven of Round Two.

Beard-a-thonAnother new fundraiser was the playoff Beard-a-thon. Hurricanes players, staff and fans teamed up to grow beards and collect pledges from friends and family. The Beard-a-thon raised over $55,000 in three rounds of the playoffs. All funds generated from the Beard-a-thon will go to support youth-related programs through the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

Beard growing efforts of players, fans and Hurricanes staff generated $55,000 for the Kids ‘N Community Foundation.

Marbles Kids MuseumIn July of 2008, Rod Brind’Amour attended the grand opening of the “Center Ice” feature at Marbles Kids Museum in downtown Raleigh. The exhibit included a synthetic ice rink and a replica of the Hurricanes’ locker room, funded by a grant from the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. “Center Ice” remained through the 2008-2009 season, and members of the community relations department returned to give hockey clinics to kids there during the year. “People in this community have really become hooked on hockey and on the organization. These are the next generation of fans. Our exhibit is really neat and kids will definitely enjoy it,” said Rod Brind’Amour.

“An innovative and energetic

partnership with the Kids ‘N

Community Foundation is enabling

Marbles Kids Museum to give tens

of thousands of children a first-

hand feel for hockey. Our Center

Ice exhibit is a visitor favorite

and a perfect platform for

communicating the importance of

physical activity, sportsmanship

and healthy nutrition.” — Sally Edwards, President, Marbles Kids Museum

Pick Up A Book And ReadThe Pick Up a Book and Read program, which gives third, fourth, and fifth grade students incentives to read, had a resoundingly successful year. Record numbers of participating students, classrooms and schools read a combined total of over 3.1 million pages.

Each student received recognition for participating, and special incentive prizes recognized the top readers in each grade level, overall and at each school. The top teachers also received awards, and the schools that produced the most pages read received special assemblies with Stormy. The top three schools this year were Carver Elementary School, Deep River Elementary School and Bugg Elementary School.

Pick Up a Book and Read also continued the optional essay contest. All 20 essay finalists came to a recognition lunch along with their parents and teachers at the RBC Center. As the keynote speaker, Chuck Kaiton spoke about the importance of reading and education. Stormy and Hurricanes rookie forward Brandon Sutter also attended to encourage the kids in their pursuit of learning.

Melissa Neal, a Carver Elementary School teacher shared her thoughts on the program :“It encompasses everything that I believe in as far as reading; it’s fundamental and kids need it to use every day in their life. So, I’m really excited about it!”

Sharing PracticeChildren from both Stough Elementary School and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation of the Triad received the opportunity to watch and take part in Hurricanes’ practices at the RBC Center. Students who participated in the Hurricanes Y-Learning program at Stough went on a tour of the arena and received a visit from Chad LaRose and Tim Gleason after practice, while the North Carolina Triad children battling diabetes got to come onto the ice for some shooting lessons with Gleason and Justin Williams.

Making Wishes Come TrueThe Carolina Hurricanes teamed up with the Make-A-Wish Foundation to make a dream come true for long-time Caniac and hockey player Connor Johnson, who has spent too much of his life fighting non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Connor watched a practice, talked to players in the locker room, ate lunch with two of his favorite Canes, Justin Williams and Matt Cullen, and then went back home to play Wii with Williams and Cullen. A big surprise was that while Connor was at practice, Make-A-Wish provided a new HDTV and other upgrades for Connor’s wish, a Hurricanes playroom. The Carolina Hurricanes organization and specifically Cullen and Williams donated many Canes items to decorate the room. It was a perfect day for a very deserving young Caniac.

Carolina Hurricanes Playroom at Rex HospitalThe Kids ‘N Community Foundation provided funding for a new playroom on the pediatric wing of Rex Hospital, which opened in February of 2009. The playroom is equipped with a Wii, computer station, reading corner, art station and interactive learning videos. The Carolina Hurricanes provided game-worn jerseys and other memorabilia to decorate the room. Chad LaRose and Patrick Eaves came to the opening, making it a very special day for the kids involved. The new playroom gives children who have to be in the hospital for extended periods of time a perfect place to relax and rehabilitate in a comfortable and welcoming environment.

NHL Diversity TeamThe Carolina Hurricanes helped launch the first NHL Diversity Team in the southeast, the Capital City Crew. The Capital City Crew gives 40 children access to all the benefits of the game of hockey at no cost to the participants. Currently, it is a partnership between the Carolina Hurricanes, the Boys and Girls Club of Wake County and the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association. The NHL Players’ Association Goals and Dreams Foundation initially provided $10,000 in grant money, while the Kids ‘N Community Foundation donated $3,000. The Capital City Crew is currently applying for grants from other sources. Additionally, Eric Staal donated 20 full sets of hockey equipment. The participants have now all been fitted for their equipment, and the team began playing in September 2009.

Holiday Angel TreeThe Carolina Hurricanes and RBC Center staff teamed up to fulfill holiday gift wishes for 100 kids from the Durham Nativity School, Wake County Human Services and the John Avery Boys and Girls Club. With the support of our staff, these children had a brighter holiday season.

Hockey Fights CancerThe Carolina Hurricanes took part in the NHL’s annual, league-wide Hockey Fights Cancer initiative, which raises money and awareness for cancer patients all over North America. This year, six local cancer organizations received concourse space, a 30-second in-game PSA, ticket fundraising options and an in-game gift presentation. Coaches, broadcasters, players, wives and staff all wore Hockey Fights Cancer attire.

Other EventsIn addition to the outreach programs specific to the Kids ‘N Community Foundation, the Carolina Hurricanes also took part in numerous other charitable events, such as the Walk for Hope, the MS Walk as a part of Leslie Rutherford’s team and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure.

Player AppearancesHurricanes players work public appearances into their very busy schedules, always eagerly doing so and surpassing expectations. North Carolina is lucky to have a team with players who are so willing to help out in the community that has given them so much support.

• Tim Gleason kicked off the Carolina Ale House Points for Kids campaign by acting as a waiter for a day. Even though he was only supposed to greet guests and serve drinks, he took on the full responsibilities of a waiter.

• Brandon Sutter made an appearance at the Carolina Ale House to start the Paper/ Magnetic Hearts campaign. He played Guitar Hero against the many kids who came to challenge him.

• Cam Ward helped make a commercial advertising the 2008 Start! Heart Walk. Although the team was away on a road trip during the actual event, former player and current Director of Defensemen Development Glen Wesley came to the walk.

• Scott Walker and his family spent a day sorting food from the general donation boxes at the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina. The Walkers also took part in Kids’ Day, a program that the Kids ‘N Community Foundation currently funds.

Holiday HelpersThe holidays brought the entire Carolina Hurricanes team out into the community in one way or another. Most of the players split up into groups to visit Rex Hospital’s Pediatric Wing, WakeMed Children’s Wing, Duke Children’s Hospital and UNC Children’s Hospital. They played video games, passed out Stormy dolls, signed autographs and took pictures with many of the hospitalized kids. All of the players truly had a wonderful day brightening these children’s lives.

Instead of going to a hospital, Tim Gleason, Tuomo Ruutu, Joe Corvo and Joni Pitkanen treated four children from the Durham Nativity School and Wake County Human Services to holiday shopping at Target. The players all received $150 gift certificates to spend on the kids, but invariably they ended up going above and beyond that to provide

the children with gifts for themselves and, more so, their families. Maybe the assists these players rack up during a game show their generosity on the ice, but their generosity really had a chance to shine here, as they provided gifts to entire families that otherwise would not have had any. “Every time you do this, it’s its own kind of special moment. We need to do this more often, not just the holidays,” Tim Gleason said.

Tanya Staal and Cody Ward joined the Carolina Hurricanes staff to provide holiday cheer at local senior centers. Groups delivered fruit, hand sanitizer and candy to residents. Each group also led a couple of rounds of bingo and awarded prizes, including tickets to games and clothing to the winners.

Player CausesCam Ward’s support of Special Olympics athletes dates back to his days of junior hockey in Red Deer, Alberta. That tremendous support continued for a fourth consecutive year through his Cam’s Champs program, which benefits the Special Olympics North Carolina. Cam pledged to donate $4 for every save he made this year to the Special Olympics, and he encouraged fans to help his cause. The overall contributions amounted to $11,860. These funds will greatly benefit the Olympians of North Carolina, and Cam’s dedication to it throughout the year also adds to awareness for all that the Special Olympics does for its participants. Keith Fishbourne, Special Olympics president said, “People are interested in following the success of Cam’s Champs, and it’s been a really good year… in Cam’s remarks here he mentioned next season, so that’s music to our ears.”

Since receiving a letter from a young hockey fan suffering from cystic fibrosis in 1996, Rod Brind’Amour has dedicated himself to fighting this disease. For the last 13 years, he has held the annual Cystic Fibrosis Golf Classic in his hometown of Campbell River, British Columbia. Brind’Amour’s commitment to this cause through the golf tournament has raised over $500,000 for the Canadian Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

In 2003, Matt Cullen and his wife Bridget started the Cullen Children’s Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for children’s cancer. Every year, the Foundation hosts the Cully’s Kids Celebrity Weekend fundraiser, which in 2008 raised over $355,000 for children’s charities in and around Fargo, North Dakota. Overall, Cully’s Kids has raised over $1.1 million.

For the fourth year in a row, Hurricanes players helped St. Baldrick’s Foundation for pediatric cancer research by shaving their heads. Tripp Tracy, Niclas Wallin and Dennis Seidenberg enjoyed the experience enough to come back for a second year, and they came out looking tough with their new, bald heads. Ryan Bayda also shaved his head for St. Baldrick’s at an event along with many members of the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association.

is it a positive for the Canes with the saves that I make, but it’s also a

positive for the Special Olympics.” — Cam Ward

Hurricanes HeroesThe Hurricanes Heroes ticket program allowed season ticket holders the option to donate unused tickets to the Community Relations department. In turn, the Community Relations department donated over 4,000 tickets during the 2008-2009 season to non-profit organizations around the state whose goals line up with those of the Kids ‘N Community Foundation. Hurricanes Heroes benefits everyone involved by giving seats to people who may be seeing their first game of hockey.

Eric’s EntourageEric Staal and his wife, Tanya, showed their generous side at every home game this year by purchasing an all-inclusive luxury suite for charitable purposes. The 40 non-profit children’s organizations that were invited to the games enjoyed all the benefits of the suite, including a Carolina Hurricanes gift

bag, a special autographed Eric’s Entourage shirt and occasionally a meet-and-greet with Eric after the game. Throughout the year the kids who came into the suite would sign a scrapbook and take a picture for it. At the end of the year, the scrapbook was presented to Eric and Tanya. Eric Staal said “To give them that break from the hospital or the everyday grind to enjoy a game, eat some popcorn and have a pop; it’s something I’m very, glad to be a part of.”

Wives Holiday Ticket Special NightsThe buy one, get one ticket special nights took on a new twist this year, as Hurricanes wives and girlfriends took ownership of all three drives. Dressed in the jerseys of their significant others, they accepted donations and interacted with fans. Autographed replica jerseys were awarded to the winners of drawings. Each person who donated food, toys or clothes received a BOGO coupon and an enter to win coupon for a chance to win an autographed jersey. This year, there was a food drive for the Food Bank of Eastern and Central North Carolina, a toy drive for Toys for Tots, Wake County Human Services, Special Blessings, Salvation Army and Building Together Ministries, and a clothing drive to benefit the Salvation Army, Helping Hands Mission and Goodwill. The final clothing drive was special because the drawing winners received their jerseys at a post-game meet and greet with the respective players.

Group Appreciation NightsThe Carolina Hurricanes recognized different groups at various games during the year. The groups received discounted tickets and acknowledgment during games. For Teacher Appreciation Night, many of the in-game entertainment features had educational themes. ‘Canes College Nights allowed students to buy discounted tickets with a valid student ID. College Nights gave Blue Devils, Tar Heels, members of the Wolfpack and everyone else the chance to come together and cheer for the Canes. The Canes also hosted the annual Military Appreciation Night. Every branch of the military received free or discounted tickets and fans got a chance to see the displays that the branches bring along with them, including tanks and helicopters. In addition, the team took the chance to thank policemen, firemen and emergency medical technicians with Public Safety Night.

Stormy Our illustrious Ice Hog, Stormy, continued to bring smiles wherever he went, perhaps most noticeably by making waves at the RBC Center during games. Stormy also used his fame for the good of the community by making 183 appearances at charities, churches, community events, hospitals and schools. Everywhere he goes, Stormy gives a happy face to the Carolina Hurricanes organization.

Ron the RefAnother unforgettable figure from Hurricanes games is Ron the Ref, who has been involved with the Hurricanes since they came to Carolina. Ron leads activities during games and at Cool Bars events and also makes school visits to liven up the days of students.

FAN DEVELOPMENT Eye Care Associates Storm SquadThe Eye Care Associates Storm Squad makes every event it attends more exciting. In addition to making games even more fun for fans, the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad showed up at the Carolina Ale Houses for each Cool Bars event and helped Stormy out at many events in the community. Over the years, the Eye Care Associates Storm Squad has been recognized in various major media outlets and has grown in popularity among Caniacs and elsewhere. The Storm Squad used it’s charisma to rally the community around the Hurricanes at 95 events this year, not including games.

In 2009, the Carolina Hurricanes Promotions and Fan Development department held the first ever Junior Storm Squad Clinic. The excited young girls spent a day with the Storm Squad, touring the RBC Center and

hearing about what it takes to motivate a whole community. The Junior Storm Squad joined its role models at a game to show off all it had learned.

Speaker’s BureauThe Carolina Hurricanes receive many requests for speakers at community events every year, and in order to satisfy as many requests as possible, we present the Speaker’s Bureau. This group includes television play-by-play announcer John Forslund, radio play-by-play announcer Chuck Kaiton, Vice President and General Manager of the RBC Center Davin Olsen and Carolina Hurricanes Alumnus Steven Halko. These speakers visited many different community organizations from schools and universities to non-profits and professional organizations, and also emceed large charitable events. Their speeches often related to the history of the franchise, the speaker’s experience with the team and the importance of teamwork and leadership.

Hurricanes UniversityHurricanes U is the perfect opportunity for someone new to hockey to pick it up or for a long-time fan to feel like he or she is really part of the team. Hurricanes players, coaches, broadcasters and staff all team up to give students of “Hockeyology” the best possible experience. The Carolina Hurricanes offer three sessions of Hurricanes U – Fall, Winter, and Graduate, each of which consists of three meetings.

Participants get to meet a player, break down game film in the Canes’ locker room with a coach and skate on the RBC Center ice at Hurricanes U. The graduate course is for students who already know something about hockey. They can sharpen their knowledge by learning all the ins and outs of contracts, the collective bargaining agreement and other business matters. All sessions include graduation at a Hurricanes home game.

“Every session was very well

done. It’s as we have come

to expect from the Canes’

organization. With class and

In an effort to further strengthen the youth and amateur hockey community and build on the Hurricanes’ existing impact, the Hurricanes formed Canes Youth & Amateur Hockey (CYAH) in February of 2006. The mission of CYAH is to provide sponsorship and presence to the local community in order to encourage the growth of youth hockey at all skill levels. CYAH also brings unity and stimulates growth in the youth hockey community through a partnership with the Raleigh Youth Hockey Association (RYHA). CYAH allows the RYHA to have an AAA team at the highest level of youth hockey. The Tier 1 teams at each age level wear Hurricanes jerseys and go by the Junior Hurricanes. In addition, Associate Head Coach and Director of Player Development Ron Francis and Youth and Amateur Hockey Coordinator

Paul Strand sit on the advisory board for the Tier 1 teams. 2008-2009 was a very successful year, with the Squirt AA team winning the Fargo Invitational Tournament and the Bantam Major AAA team taking home the Nike/Bauer Bantam Major AAA Bauer Division Championship. Overall, the partnership between CYAH and the RYHA has helped 1200 young hockey players.

CYAH also allows for improvement with existing relationships with in-line hockey leagues — Central Carolina Hockey (CCH) and the Carolina Scholastic Hockey League (CSHL). The Hurricanes’ involvement has provided a positive influence in the youth hockey environment and has offered energy directed towards fundraising and improvements for the program.

30 31

Goalie Coach Tom Barrasso and Hurricanes goaltender Cam Ward passed on their knowledge to up-and-coming youth goaltenders. John Scott, Director of the Capital City Crew, leads an off-ice hockey clinic at the Boys and Girls Club.

Young youth players run through drills at camp.

In-School Hockey Clinics2008-2009 marked the fifth year of a partnership between the Carolina Hurricanes and Wake County Public Schools, which brought the excitement of Hurricanes hockey to physical education classes. The program uses hockey drills and games to emphasize teamwork, leadership and sportsmanship, and has now been presented to more than fifty area schools, ranging from third to 12th grade. The participating schools’ excitement demonstrates how the game has grown in popularity since the program began in 2004.

Street StormersThe Canes Street Stormers program is a joint partnership with the NHL Street Initiative that provides street hockey equipment to recreational facilities. The Street Stormers program provides each facility with enough equipment for games and clinics of up to 30 players. Each facility receives hockey nets, full goalie equipment, sticks, hockey pucks and balls. Among the most active participants in the program are local Boys and Girls Clubs and the Raleigh Parks and Recreation department.
