HOW OFTEN MUST I FORGIVE?Reflection on Matthew Reflection on Matthew 18:21-35

Continuing last Sunday’s focus on forgiveness, today’s Gospel features Peter’s question, Continuing last Sunday’s focus on forgiveness, today’s Gospel features Peter’s question, “How often must I forgive?” This prompts Jesus to tell the rather disturbing parable “How often must I forgive?” This prompts Jesus to tell the rather disturbing parable of the “unrepentant debtor,” which always reminds me of the discomfiting petition we of the “unrepentant debtor,” which always reminds me of the discomfiting petition we make in the Lord’s Prayer: “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass make in the Lord’s Prayer: “forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us.” In other words, “Lord, show me the same mercy I extend to others.” Oh my! against us.” In other words, “Lord, show me the same mercy I extend to others.” Oh my! Is that really what I want to ask for?Is that really what I want to ask for?

Forgiveness is one of the most important ways we keep the power of love flowing Forgiveness is one of the most important ways we keep the power of love flowing through all the parts of the Body of Christ. God’s grace and mercy given to each of us through all the parts of the Body of Christ. God’s grace and mercy given to each of us are meant to be extended by us to others. “For what you have received as a gift, give as are meant to be extended by us to others. “For what you have received as a gift, give as a gift.” In this way, the Body (church) stays healthy and growing. When we withhold a gift.” In this way, the Body (church) stays healthy and growing. When we withhold forgiveness, the whole Body suffers, just as sure as a blockage in a major artery affects forgiveness, the whole Body suffers, just as sure as a blockage in a major artery affects the entire human body. the entire human body.

What we see in the unrepentant debtor is any one of us when we fall into what the What we see in the unrepentant debtor is any one of us when we fall into what the author of the first reading from Sirach describes as one who “hugs tight” vengeance, author of the first reading from Sirach describes as one who “hugs tight” vengeance, “cherishes” wrath, “nourishes” anger, “refuses” mercy. It is quite literally true that we “cherishes” wrath, “nourishes” anger, “refuses” mercy. It is quite literally true that we become our own worst enemy when we refuse to forgive. Like the unforgiving servant become our own worst enemy when we refuse to forgive. Like the unforgiving servant being handed over to the torturers at the end of the parable, I become my own torturer being handed over to the torturers at the end of the parable, I become my own torturer when I refuse to forgive others. My wrath, anger and resentment consume me and block when I refuse to forgive others. My wrath, anger and resentment consume me and block the flow of love in the Body.the flow of love in the Body.

Forgiveness is the path God walked for us in the cross of Christ. With His grace, it is Forgiveness is the path God walked for us in the cross of Christ. With His grace, it is the path we can walk with and for each other. This week, search your heart for any the path we can walk with and for each other. This week, search your heart for any blockages – resentments, hurts, angers – and work on forgiving any one held hostage by blockages – resentments, hurts, angers – and work on forgiving any one held hostage by them, so that God’s life and love can flow more freely through you. And if you need to, do them, so that God’s life and love can flow more freely through you. And if you need to, do it seventy-seven times.it seventy-seven times.

Feast Day: September 16 • Patron saint of earache

Cornelius was a priest who may have belonged to a great Roman family. He was chosen as pope after the death of Fabian in 250. There were differences in thought as to how Christians should be treated after they had denied their faith during persecutions and then wanted to return to the religious community when it was safe. Cornelius took a very forgiving approach to the matter, while others were much more harsh. He was a proven listener to opposing views. He died in 253 as the Christian persecutions flared up again.

PRAYER TO SAINT CORNELIUS

St. Cornelius of Rome, I ask you to pray for relief of this earache. Ask the Lord our God to remove the discomfort for He has healed so many who approached Him in need. As a great listener, Cornelius, you paved your way to a place in Heaven. I pray unto God to follow the same path. I pray for the Lord’s healing hand to be placed upon my head while I give all glory to Him. Amen.
