From the President’s Desk…
Christmas is the time of year when we send messages of love, best wishes and gifts of happiness. Our family and friends are an important part of our life. Christmas is a time when family and friends get together to get caught up on events from the past year. For some of us, it is a sacred time.
I have been thinking that we should interview our members so they can relate what Christmas was like for their family in the years past. That may be a project for next year.
Another project for 2015 may include composing a “SEESA Song”.
November was a busy month at SEESA. We held a remembrance service, a successful fundraising gala, Drama Club shows, and a Memorial Celebration for our deceased members . Family members always appreciate this remembrance for our late members and their families. The Christmas tree is set up in the cafeteria. The stars represent our deceased members and were placed there by their families. Please take a minute to read the names on the stars.
I would like to take this opportunity to wish SEESA staff, the SEESA Board and SEESA members a happy holiday season that is fun and festive. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2015 - friends! Sheila Clifford-MacKay SEESA President

Drop in fees increase for the first time since 1980! Yes it is true! Effective January 1, 2015 drop in fees will be $2.00/visit. Most people I speak to about this say, “it’s about time!” In the past 35 years class fees have more than doubled as well as the costs of utilities and supplies. Yes, it is about time. If this increase is substantial enough to prevent you from attending a club please see me in confidence. We can make arrangements for you. We now accept VISA/MC and Debit at the front desk. There are restrictions: 1. A minimum purchase of $30.00 2. No cash back option 3. Phone-in credit card orders are subject to an additional user fee of $2.
Phone-in registration for classes and tickets will be available the day following in-person program registration or sale.
To all of our members, on behalf of the staff of SEESA, we wish you all the warm and wonderful things that make a Merry Christmas. Thank you for your support, your hours of work, your answer to the “call of duty”; our volunteers continue to be SEESA’s greatest gift.

Christmas can be a very lonely time so in lieu
of handy man tips here are some suggestions
to avoid the Christmas Blues:
1. Volunteer Mustard Seed Church, Hope
Mission, Salvation Army all run programs
through Christmas and are always looking
for volunteers.
2. Accept Invitations - When people invite
you to a function - say yes!
3. Enjoy Solitude - Prepare for a “you” day,
get a haircut, a manicure, a new outfit.
Plan a movie marathon, prepare your
favourite meal - Celebrate you!
4. Host an Orphan Christmas - even
though you are alone, you are not alone.
MANY people have no one to celebrate
with. Invite them to dinner!
5. Work - Offer to work the holiday shift.
6. Host an Online Christmas - set up a
Skype chatroom or a Facebook group.
7. Take Time to appreciate what you do, and
what you have. This is a good time to
make a gratitude box.
8. Look Forward– Plan for a better future.
Make a list of things you want to change
for next year and thoughts on how you are
going to achieve those goals.
9. Mind Over Matter - If you are feeling over-
whelmed, imagine what you would feel
and look like if you could cope - you have
more power than you think .
10.Reach Out - If you are feeling down call
someone. If you have no one try 211 or
780 482 4357.
If you need some help preparing for the
holiday season - Let us know.

Outreach: Friendly Visitor Program
Greetings to all,
Christmas can be a lonely time. At the present time, we have volunteer opportunities if you would like to make a positive difference in a senior’s life. The Friendly Home Visit is a great way to meet and socialize with an isolated senior. Also, our phone buddy volunteers can enjoy a phone conversation with isolated seniors from their own home and may check on them once a week. For more information please contact Sherr or Phil.
With a growing aging population in Alberta, SEESA Outreach is adapting to seniors’ changing needs to live healthier and independently in their community. Outreach provides the following services to any senior who may need assistance: with government forms, personal sessions and advocacy. Furthermore, we help decrease isolation through facilitating support groups such as Social Circle, Shop Talk, and Seniors Insight Group. Services are available to SEESA members, as well as non-members within our geographic boundaries, at no cost.
If you have any questions in these areas, please contact Celeste, Phil or 211.
Happy holiday to you and your family!

Melody Singers Notes This has been a busy time for the Melody Singers. Since our last report we have had 4 sing outs and have participated in the Remembrance Day observance at SEESA.
We visited Clover Bar Lodge where Emily Rowan acted as our MC. Linda Jennings and Alida Van Braeden, two of our talented poets, read lovely selections form their own writings. Our next stop was Providence Centre. Pearl Lauber was our MC. Entertainment during the breaks was Ben Lauber singing “Love Me Tender” and “Working Man” backed up by Bass + 10. Vivian Lundgren and Doug Gillett sang “You’re The Cream in my Coffee” and “Taking a Chance on Love”.
Hardisty Nursing Home was the next place on our schedule. Joan Brady chaired the proceedings; Linda Chernetski sang “Nothing is too Wonderful to be True”. Martin Molzan played “Enjoy Yourself” on his violin. Dee Turner and Ron Cutting followed with “Are You Bloated Tonight” and “Shine on Harvest Moon” It was a great birthday party. The next venue on our tour was St Joseph’s Auxiliary Hospital. Tom McGovern was the MC. He also accompanied Vivian Lundgren on his clarinet as she sang “Evergreen”. Vivian was joined by Doug Gillett singing “The Way We Were”. A Trio, Linda Chernestski, Pearl Lauber, and Beryl Robertson, sang “I Am Just A Girl Who Can’t Say No.” We have had a very enjoyable time singing for seniors. Thanks especially to Anne Marshall for preparing us and inspiring us. We are currently hard at work on our Christmas music.
* A correction to our last article we have 4 new members and 3 returning members for a total of 58 harmonious characters.

Conversations Matter
At the Grey Matters Conference in Red Deer recently I attended a session from Alberta Health Care Services that introduced a guide for making health care decisions during the Palliative Care and End of Life phase of our life. Why would we need this? The bad news is that 70% of us will reach a time when we are unable to communicate our own wishes.
Conversely, the good news is we can make our wishes known, communicate and document them now so that this information is available to the healthcare team when and if it is needed.
The information consists of a medical assessment done when you enter the health care system and recording your wishes with respect to treatment, care and housing. The information is stored in a green, plastic envelope called the Green Sleeve that will remain with you and accompany you as you move within the Health Care System. The Green Sleeve documents are fluid and can be changed if your condition and choices change.
What do you need to do? You need to reflect on your wishes and values. For example, what do you expect from health care; what are your views on prolonging life; how would you define quality of life. You need to talk about your wishes and values to a trusted person: family member, spouse, partner or friend, in a number of conversations.
Finally you need to document your wishes. Complete a Personal Care Directive that names the person or persons you have chosen to speak on your behalf and store everything in your Green Sleeve. When it becomes necessary this material and this person will direct the Health Care team to carry out your wishes.

BEHIND THE SCENES
We joke about our memory lapses, as people do joke about the scary and
undefined.
People of all ages experience memory problems occasionally. Seniors seem to
worry about it more than other age groups.
Do we understand the difference between symptoms of depression, medication-caused
delusion and the symptoms of dementia?
Printed material is available. Check with
outreach workers, family doctors and public
health clinics for handouts.
Online dementia related resources are
available. The Alzheimer Society of Alberta & Northwest Territories (ASANT) offers an
online gathering place for people with dementia and their care partners. See
asantcafe.ca for up-to-date information, discussion groups, and education.
What is my responsibility as a concerned
citizen when I realize that a vehicle driver is very confused, whatever the cause? Are we
responsible for other’s safety? The government appears to think we are. Alberta
Transportation - Driver’s Fitness and Monitoring requires a letter (or email) with
the reporter’s name and contact information that will be kept private. They prefer a
licence plate # of the reported driver but a name and approximate age will suffice.
Those of us, at SEESA, who work with
membership data, are held back from member reports because of confidentiality
agreements with members. That is as it should be.
When it comes to safety and diagnosis for
someone who is challenged by confusion, do you think that friends, neighbours, and
acquaintances owe it to one another to make a report rather that allowing the
possibility of an accident and the resultant sadness?

Fits and Giggles Our Accidental Drama Club pulled off another bang-up performance with their annual Fall offering. The hit of the evening turned out to be the not-so-behind-the-scenes stage crew who swapped out the sets while in costume right in front of the audience. Great choice, Director!
The cast entertained a total of 423 audience members at the Gala event Friday and the two sold out performances Saturday and Sunday. Well done all!
