Mayor’s message

On behalf of the District of Mission council and the

citizens of Mission, I am pleased to welcome all guests to our community.

Nestled along the north bank of the Fraser River, Mission offers small town hospitality and a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, golfing, and world-class sturgeon and salmon fishing.

Mission is also home to numerous festivals and events which take place throughout the year, including the Folk Music Festival, Old Car Sunday, Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival, and the Candlelight Parade.

As a growing and desirable community in the Lower

Mainland of British Columbia, Mission further offers business opportunities for its residents and visitors alike. The current Mission residents are truly proud to call our community home. Community rich in history and cultureMission is home to the “oldest house in British Columbia,”

the � rst and only armed train robbery in Canada and the 100 Mile Challenge television show.

Located along the banks of the Fraser River, Mission was named for the mission built by the Oblates of the Immaculate Mary in 1861.

The city grew rapidly throughout the later half of the 1800s, with the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1886. In 1891, Mission became home to the first railway crossing linking British Columbia and the United States.

On Sept. 10, 1904 the notorious Bill Miner and two

accomplices robbed a CPR train as it le� Mission.� e oldest known dwelling site in B.C. is Xa:ytem, which

remains an important site celebrating the heritage of the Sto:lo people, whose ancestors inhabited the site 9,000 years ago.

Se� lements, and industries like forestry and agriculture, thrived through the next 100 years, with a hiccup in 1948, when the Fraser River � ooded the entire area, including the downtown which was then located on the waterfront.

� e city moved its downtown core to its current location on higher ground, and has continued to grow in population, business and diversity ever since.

Power House at Stave Falls still generates interest

The 1912 Power House at Stave Falls began working again in 2002, this time generating visitors rather than electricity.

The National Historic Site of Canada remains similar to the way it was first built, and is now a first-class interpretive centre.

The generator hall is filled with the original five generators and turbines for visitors to experience up close.

All tours start in the theatre, where the video Rain introduces you to hydro electricity. You also get a glimpse of the early 1900s and see what the facility has become today. Electrica, a hands-on area, is divided into two sections, alternative energies and the science of electricity.

Look out for special events throughout the year at the Power House, like Christmas in July and the Haunted Power House in October.

Hours for self-guided tours from March to October are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., and hours are reduced to 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November to March.

Mission’s downtown core is the heart of the municipality’s retail and commercial sector and for several years a group of dedicated volunteers have helped guide the area.

The Downtown Business Association (DBA) is made up of all the merchants and landowners in Mission’s downtown. Its goal is to create a prosperous and vital downtown.

The DBA helps to coordinate events in the downtown area, like customer appreciation nights and the always fun Cookie Night. Add to that the aesthetic touches, such as the beautiful flower baskets which grace lamp posts along First

Avenue each summer, and you’ll agree the organization has been working hard to make downtown the place to shop.

The West Coast Express (WCE) is the commuter service that connects Mission with downtown Vancouver and the rest of the Lower Mainland.

A one-way trip on the line takes 73 minutes, and an emphasis is placed on passenger comfort.

Available in downtown Mission, train service operates Monday to Friday during peak commuter times, and is supplemented by the TrainBus service which operates seven days a week, except for statutory holidays. There are two daily TrainBus runs leaving Mission in the morning, and five returns at night.

The eight stations along the route are Mission, Port Haney, Maple Meadows, Pitt Meadows, Port Coquitlam, Coquitlam Central, and Port Moody, with the downtown

terminus at Waterfront Station in Vancouver. The West Coast Express is operated by TransLink, the

Metro Vancouver transportation authority. The line links passengers with SkyTrain, Seabus and the rest of the public transit system in the Fraser Valley and Metro Vancouver.

The Mission station is located on the south side of North Railway Avenue, between Welton and Horne. The station platform is connected to the parking area by an overhead walkway.

WCE offers many additional services, including a Santa Train, which offers Valley shoppers access to Vancouver for the cost of a food donation and toy.

Mission has a rich history, and in the downtown core there are two buildings where people can see the past brought to life.

Housed in the former Canadian Bank of Commerce building that was erected in 1907, the Mission Museum offers visitors a look at the diverse history of Mission through its material culture. The items on display range from artifacts left by ancient Sto:lo people, the ancestors of the native people who made the Fraser Valley their home, to more recent pieces brought by pioneers.

The family friendly atmosphere, combined with hands-on exhibits are ideal for children of all ages, and the gift store is a great place to pick up some hard candy before leaving.

The next exhibit will be The Evolution of Communication, showing off a brick cellphone, crystal radio and a perpetual calendar. This exhibit opens Feb. 21.

Other events are the annual antiques

appraisal, Community Garden planting and summer kid’s club. The museum is located at 33201 Second Ave.

Sixty per cent of job openings in the next 10 years are expected to be in trades and technology. At Riverside you’ll have the opportunity to train for a trade while completing your high school graduation, however, adult students are also accepted for a variety of career programs.

Summit Learning CentreSummit offers full-time elementary and secondary programs

for students who are fully educated at home. Summit also delivers free high-school courses for students who attend a neighbourhood school accessible anytime, anywhere in B.C. There are 650 students cross-enrolled, taking one or more courses through Summit, which allows them to customize their high school course planning.

� e Mission Leisure Centre provides an action-packed day for the family with the fountained leisure pool and water slide indoors, and a seasonal spray park outdoors.

While the kids splash around, adults can get a workout in the 25-metre lap pool, in the weight room with state-of-the-art equipment or through a game of squash or racquetball. � ere is a wide range of � tness classes as well, ranging from beginner to advanced levels.

Westminster Abbey a� racts thousands of visitors each year to its serene perch high above the Fraser Valley, just northeast of downtown Mission.

Benedictine monks have carved out a nearly self-su� cient lifestyle there, raising cows, chickens and pigs as well as tending crops. Construction of a church in 1982 was the realization of a 28-year-old dream for the monks of Westminster Abbey. Planned over a 20-year period by Vancouver architect Asbjorn Gathe, the modernistic church has taken over duties as the monks’ house of worship.

� e church is 162 feet long by 110 feet wide at the transepts and contains 64 stained-glass windows.

� e rainbow-coloured, 1.5 inch-thick

pieces of glass create windows that stand 22 feet high around the perimeter of the church.

A dome of coloured glass rises 60 feet above the altar, allowing sha� s of light to stream down into the church.

In addition to the Abbey, � e Seminary of Christ the King accommodates students who study to become secular priests. Mass is sung at 10 a.m. on Sunday and 6:30 a.m. weekdays.

� ere are also some walking paths on the Abbey grounds, which lead wanderers to an exceptional viewpoint overlooking Hatzic and the Fraser River. If you do plan on walking these paths, please leave your animals behind, and stick to the path.

In 1892, the � rst and largest Marian shrine was erected in B.C. � e Gro� o of Our Lady of Lourdes was built on a rock promontory in the upper reaches of St. Mary’s Mission and Residential School. A reconstruction of the Gro� o was completed in 1997 and still every year, thousands of people gather in Fraser River Heritage Park for the annual Pilgrimage to Our Lady of Lourdes Gro� o. � e trek this year happens Aug. 20.

From sturgeon to salmon, Mission boasts world-class angling adventure


Anglers can � nd some spectacular � shing in the Fraser River near Mission.

Mission’s sturgeon � shery is one of a kind, and local � shing guides can give even seasoned anglers a new experience.

� e Fraser is considered the most productive salmon river in the world, and in any given year 30 million salmon will pass Mission. When the big � sh spawn � shermen line sand bars virtually shoulder to shoulder on a sunny weekend.

Mission has been labelled the Sturgeon Capital of the World. During spring, summer and fall, you can stand on the dike from Harbour Park to Dewdney Slough and watch anglers

catch monster sturgeon. Although late summer through to early winter is best for � shing, sturgeon can be caught year-round if you learn a li� le about feeding pa� erns and migration routes.

During summer months the salmon � shing is incredible. Although you can � sh near Mission for salmon, the best spots are up-river from the mouth of the Sumas River and further east towards Hope. Gravel bars located along the river banks are the best location, so all you need to do is � nd access routes to these areas.

Salmon migrations begin in the Fraser River as early as April. Although the good fishing doesn’t really get going until mid-June, you can catch salmon on the Fraser just about year-round. Some of the best fishing is between mid-June to mid-November. Anglers from around the world now consider the Fraser River one of the top angling destinations in North America.

Chinook, June 15 to Aug. 31Chinook are the largest salmon, some

tipping the scales at 50 pounds and more, and they run every year.

There are two runs, one in June that lasts until August, and a fall run that goes from September until November.

Most local anglers and guides fish for chinook between Mission and Chilliwack, although you can catch them all the way up to Hope and

beyond. Pink (mid-August to mid-October)

Pink salmon return to the Fraser every second year on odd years, and they will run again in 2011. Pinks are the smallest salmon, averaging between three and five pounds, but they are also the most plentiful, returning in huge numbers often in the tens of millions.

Coho, chum (late September to late November)

Coho and chum begin their annual return to the Fraser around mid-to-late August. The run really gets going in mid-September for those anglers fishing the lower river. The upper river above Chilliwack produces fish all the way through until mid-to-late November. This fishery is one of our most consistent on the Fraser and can offer some incredible angling opportunities.

Sockeye (mid-July to mid-September)Sockeye salmon is one of the most

popular freshwater fisheries, but the size of the runs and angling opportunities have become difficult to predict. They will be running again in 2011.

Mission is a five-bloom community on the national Communities in Bloom stage.

What does that mean? “People, plants and pride… growing together” is the essence of the program.

Communities in Bloom is a program where towns and cities across Canada work to beautify homes, businesses and public places through horticulture, tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscaping and floral displays.

These communities are judged provincially, nationally, or internationally and awarded an appropriate number of blooms, with five being the optimum.

Mission has blossomed with beautiful flowers in the shopping areas and residential gardens. It is a tidy, clean, and very environmentally aware town.

We have earned the coveted “five out of five” blooms in the national competition, and we are again invited to compete on the national level, against other towns our size from across the country.

World class music comes to Mission

Stave Falls Dam Forest Interpretation WalkFollow Dewdney Trunk Road to halfway between the landfill and the Stave Falls Dam.

This is an interpretive 45-minute loop which winds through a naturally regenerated forest. Part of the trail is on the side of an ancient volcano. There are also spectacular views.

Easy trailsDevil’s LakeAdjacent to Stave Lake. Walk through second-growth forest to the lake.

North for four kilometres on the gravel road at the west end of Stave Falls Dam.

Red MountainPark on the east side of Dewdney Trunk Road at Mill Pond. Cross the road and

take the trail just south of the entrance to the Mission Rod and Gun Club.There is one hiking trail and one multi-use trail where mountain bikes

are allowed. Each loop is 1.3 km.

Rolley FallsTake Bell Street north of Dewdney Trunk Road.

Take the easy lakeside trail east to a wooden bridge. Don’t cross the bridge; walk straight ahead until the trail turns uphill to the right. Follow an undeveloped forest trail to the left for 15 minutes.

Travel about 3 km and turn right on Campbell Street then stay left. Climb the ridge west (one hour) of Hatzic Valley and see six major peaks and the Fraser Valley.

Hayward Lake Reservoir TrailAccess from Stave Falls Dam or Ruskin Dam at Wilson Street

The Hayward Reservoir Trail and Hayward Railway Trail combine to provide a complete loop around Hayward Lake. Enjoy old growth and second growth forests, bridged creeks and the Steelhead Falls viewpoint. The entire 18 km loop takes more than four hours to complete.

Bear MountainStarts at the end of Saunders Street, just north of Richards Avenue

Follow a forestry road into the Mission Municipal Forest. Mountain bikes allowed.

Challenging trailMt. CrickmerAccess starts 7 km along Burma Road, north of Dewdney Trunk

This is the highest summit in the municipal forest. There are views of Stave Lake, Alouette Lake, Mt. Blanshard and Golden Ears Park. The trail is 8.7 km (one way) and gains 1,156 me-tres in elevation.

Fraser River Heritage Park is a main focal point of community life in Mission, providing a casual place to meet, relax or be entertained.

More than a park, it is an historic site and one of Mission’s busiest entertainment venues. The park, located off Fifth Avenue on Mary Street, offers breathtaking vistas from a broad, 44-acre terrace on the east side of Mission.

The Norma Kenney House, Kinsmen Bandstand, and Rotary Flag Plaza are ideal stages for everything from performances to weddings and reunions. Other features include the Marcellus Rhododendron Walk, the Ernest Jacobsen Rose Garden and the Memorial Garden.

The park also houses the historic ruins of St. Mary’s

Thousands of eagles descend on rivers


Set against a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, massive evergreens and emerald green glacial water, the Fraser Valley Bald Eagle Festival takes place the third weekend each November. Municipal forest offers natural beauty


The District of Mission is fortunate to have over 10,000 hectares of forested lands in which to recreate. In 1958, the provincial government granted Tree Farm Licence 26 to manage the forest resources. The economic and social benefits come from community stability generated by steady local employment and revenue, control of the local forest resources, and providing forest recreation and educational opportunities.

The municipal forest is generally located north of downtown Mission, accessible via several locations along Dewdney Trunk Road. Over half of the municipal forest lies on the western shores of Stave Lake.

It offers over 11 trails and areas of varying degrees of difficulty, length

and type. All trails can accommodate hiking but there are additional non-motorized, multi-use trails on which you can ride horses or mountain bikes. This spectacular backdoor playground features locations that offer stunning vistas such as Mt. Baker, Vancouver Island, Fraser Valley, Mt. Robie Reid, Golden Ears Mountains and the beautiful Stave Lake. There are also amazing waterfalls, serene small lakes, and pockets of accessible old growth forests. The District of Mission is working diligently towards providing future

recreation opportunities and infrastructure in western Stave Lake. The vision is to transform this beautiful region into a compelling destination for residents and visitors alike, and provide positive forest experiences. This involves the development of partnerships with local First Nations communities, and identifying the right partners to create viable commercial recreation and tourism ventures, while also creating learning opportunities and multi-user access to a working community forest.

Step into the 1920s at Kilby in Harrison Mills

The Kilby Historic Site is the perfect place for a trip down memory lane. Kilby General Store is all that remains of the original town of Harrison Mills, a once-bustling community.

The store was the hub of the town, serving as the general supply store, post office, gas station, hotel and meeting place. With saw mills and train stations close by, the store catered to everyone from locals to vacationers.

Connecting boardwalks were built around town because Harrison Mills suffered from many floods. Kilby General Store still has its boardwalks intact, a prominent feature of this historic site.

Thomas Kilby, who was born in England in 1868 and moved to B.C. in the late 1880s, opened the store in 1906, but it was his son, Acton, who began promoting the store as a museum. The province bought the operation from the family in 1972.

The Kilbys still maintain a close relationship with the historic site that was once their family home.

Today, the Kilby General Store is a museum packed with fascinating products from the 1920s and 1930s.

Along with the museum, the historic site also contains a five-acre working farm, which includes other heritage buildings and friendly farm animals,

Harrison River Restaurant, Waterloo Farm Gift Shop and Kilby Park Campground.

Kilby Historic Site offers a number of tours and hands-on activities.

SteelheadSteelhead, located in northern Mission, was � rst inhabited

in the early 1900s. � ere are two stories about how the community received its name. Some believe the area is named a� er the salmon that used to go up the Stave River, and others say it was named a� er a railway that was supposed to be built in the area.

Today, the area is home to many working professionals who enjoy the quiet, natural se� ing and most of Mission’s municipal forest. � ere are many worthwhile hiking trails here.

Southwest Mission� ere are two communities known as Silverdale and

Silverhill in this part of Mission. Both have a community hall which used to be the gathering place for dances, fundraisers and local meetings.

Silverhill was mostly known as a Swedish se� lement in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Many of the families that started the community still live there today.

� e Donatelli family came from Italy and homesteaded 160 acres in the 1890s. Many descendants from the two Donatelli brothers who � rst came to Mission, still live on parts of the original property in Silverdale.

If you are in this area, be sure to visit Hayward Lake, a popular recreation site for families throughout the year. Go for a picnic and swim during the summer. Or you can hike all, or a section of, the 18 km loop trail any time.

McConnell CreekSe� lement � rst came to McConnell Creek in the late

1800s. It was a logging community, and there were many small mills, which a� racted workers. McConnell Creek, located about six miles northeast of Mission, was named a� er a logger named Jack McConnell.

Early se� lers built their homes out of the plentiful cedar.Louis Carrat came to the area in 1894 and homesteaded

360 acres. On his land he built a magni� cent garden and three sets of waterfalls, which is now known as Cascade Falls.

Today, the scenic Cascade Falls a� racts visitors and locals alike. At the end of Sylvester Road, which leads to McConnell Creek, is a logging road and access to a few lakes and recreational area for ATVers, dirt bikers and hikers.

Fraser River Heritage Park� is park features majestic views of Mt. Baker and the Fraser

Valley. � ere are picnic tables throughout the park and steady breezes make it a favourite place for � ying kites.

Centennial Park� ere are picnic tables throughout this large park, along with

plenty of shade. � ere is a jogging trail, tennis courts and a children’s playground area.

Hayward Lake� is is one of the best spots in the Fraser Valley with a picnic

area, beach and trails.

Cascade FallsLocated just east of Mission, the main feature is a series of

waterfalls on Cascade Creek.

For thousands of years the Mission area has been home to “the people of the river’’ and the Fraser River still plays an important part in our recreation culture.

Take a drive along the Scenic 7 route

� e Mission Farmers Market is held every Saturday, May through September, beside the Mission Library. Come and try a heritage apple from Silverhill Orchard, or some hormone-free, grass fed beef from folks at Hippy Cow Beef. Up to 25 vendors will join you every Saturday with products ranging from organic vegetables to handmade jewelry.

If you’re seeking a more hands-on experience with your food, Sun Valley Trout Park is the place to be. As the largest and oldest trout farm in B.C.
