Biography:
George Duke Humphrey was born in Tippah County, Mississippi on August 30, 1897. He
graduated from Tippah County Agricultural High School in 1915 and attended the Mississippi
State Teacher College (now the University of Southern Mississippi) and received his BA from
Blue Mountain College in 1929, with majors in English, history and education. He received his
MA from the University of Chicago, in 1931, in educational administration. He next received
his doctorate in land-grant college and university administration from Ohio State University in
1939.
During his educational process, Humphrey was establishing a career as an educator. He began
teaching right out of high school in 1915. He was then promoted to school principal, system
superintendent, as well as an athletic coach. He was briefly an instructor at Furman University in
South Carolina, was named high school supervisor for the Mississippi State Department of
Education from 1932 to 1933. In July of 1934 he was named the ninth president of Mississippi
State College. During his tenure as President, Humphrey established the Department of Forestry,
the Department of Accounting, Management, and Economics, the Graduate School, emphasized
the arts at the college, and helped to usher the university through the Great Depression and
World War II.
Humphrey left Mississippi State in 1945 for the Presidency at the University of Wyoming, where
he remained until his retirement in 1964. Dr. Humphrey died in Laramie, Wyoming, September
10, 1973.
