A new page to be written.” Welcome to the 2018 edition of the MUW Speech-Language Pathology Program’s annual newsletter! Each year, a theme is selected for the incoming class of graduate students, and this year, we proudly present “Superheroes In Training”. We have welcomed 16 new graduate clinicians who are acquiring the knowledge and training to make them the “Super Heroes” of our field one day. In the words of Wonder Woman, here is an encouragement to all the current student clinicians working to become impactful leaders in our corner: Each summer, first year graduate clinicians have the opportunity to participate in Camp Jabber Jaw. Camp Jabber Jaw is a week long day-camp put on by the T.K. Martin Center at Mississippi State University. This camp provides campers with the opportunity to expand their ways of communication with Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC). Family members are welcomed to join the festivities as graduate students are paired with campers to participate in engaging and beneficial activities for the week. The theme for this year was a “Birthday Celebration” for Camp Jabber Jaw. The campers and counselors participated in birthday-centered recreation throughout the week. CAMP JABBER JAW MSHA The MUW chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is off to a great start this year! The first meeting of the year was led by former NSSLHA officers, Ivy Robbins and Jordan Wade. They gave new members an introduction to what NSSLHA is and what it means to be a part of our chapter. New officers for the 2018-2019 year have now been elected, and these girls are eager to begin serving our chapter. The new officers led the second meeting of the semester by describing the goals for the year, as well as asking for input on chapter expectations. For their first event of the year, MUW’s NSSLHA chapter participated in Oktober Fest, which is an annual campus wide event. Members created fun games for children to play, and interacted with the community to bring awareness to communication disorders. On September 12th and 17th, Dr. Huber, Mrs. Hanson and 6 first year graduate clinicians conducted hearing screenings on students from Virgil Jones Elementary, B.F. Liddell Middle School, and Noxubee High School. Brianna Barrett, a first year graduate clinician, stated, “It’s important for us to screen hearing of children in school, because if they aren’t hearing the sounds, they can’t hear what the teachers are saying, which affects their learning.” This provides a great opportunity for students to get hands on experience in the school districts. AWARDS NSSLHA NEWS “SUPER HEAR-OES” The Mississippi Speech Language and Hearing Association annual conference is always an exciting time for our department. This past April, the conference was hosted in Natchez. Not only did our faculty and students take the opportunity to get away and enjoy the town of Natchez, but they were able to participate in sessions, gleaning useful knowledge from many different experts in our field. This year, one of our very own faculty, Dr. Hortencia Kayser, presented a one-hour session on the topic of “Assessment and Intervention of Hispanic children.” In addition, 17 of our senior undergraduate students presented in poster sessions on different diagnostic tools and their applicability in diagnostics of clients with African American English and Spanish-English dialects. FIRST YEAR GRADS SUPERHEROES IN TRAINING Congratulations to the following students for all of their hard work! Ruth Foster was awarded the Mississippi Speech and Hearing Association (MSHA) Outstanding Clinician award this year. Our first-year graduate awards were awarded to Jessica Stewart for Academic Excellence and Mackenzie Sullivan for her Clinical work. Barbara Hanner’s Award for Academic Excellence was awarded to a 2nd year student, Mary Heflin Alexander. The Francis A. Griffith Compassionate Scientist award was awarded to Sadie Fears for her clinical work. This year a new scholarship was created, the Joy R. Townsend Outstanding SLP student award. This award provides a scholarship to a second year graduate student. The Joy R. Townsend Outstanding SLP student award was given to Ruth Foster. If you would like to contribute to a future SLP’s education, please contact the MUW Speech and Hearing Center. This past May, we hosted a retirement reception for three of our faculty. Dr. Marie Byrne worked in the speech-language pathology field for 27 years, devoting 21 of those years as PhD faculty at MUW. Mrs. Joy Townsend devoted 33 years to MUW, serving 21 years as Clinical Director and 12 years as Interim Department Chair. Dr. Michelle Harmon also served for 35 years as PhD faculty at MUW. An exciting event we look forward to at the Speech and Hearing center is the upcoming move to Turner Hall. Our new building is still in the progress of being renovated, but once completed, it will provide opportunity for the growth of our department as well as an updated environment for the faculty and students. Be on the lookout for the date of our open house and ribbon cutting! We hope to see you there! My name is Ashley Alexander and I am excited to be doing adjunct teaching/supervision this year. I completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees at Mississippi University for Women and just recently moved back to the area with my husband, Ben, of 19 years and our daughters, Emma (15) and Ava (12). I am a full time public school SLP in my 19th year. Teaching class and being back in the clinic has been fun and is an invigorating change of pace. In my spare time, I enjoy reading and watching my children participate in their numerous extracurricular activities. Best wishes to all of you in the wide world of speech pathology! TIFFANY BOWMAN Hello to all! I hope this newsletter finds everyone well. This semester has started off strong and is very busy. This semester, I’m teaching Phonetics and supervising many therapy sessions at the Speech and Hearing Center. On a personal note, this past year has brought many exciting things for me and my husband. Firstly, we moved into our house in January that we had been renovating. I, also, was able to complete a half marathon last winter as well as 10K race in the spring. Last but most definitely not least, my husband and I will be expecting our first child later this fall. We are excited to welcome our baby boy into the world and see what this next phase of life has in store for us. LYNN HANSON Mrs. Hanson continues to serve as Clinical Practicum Coordinator where she oversees clinical assignments for on- and off-campus which keeps her pretty busy. She, along with Dr. Byrne, Dr. Harmon, and Mrs. Burlingame, submitted “The Relationship between Phonological Awareness and Phonetic Transcription” to the Journal of Communication Disorders which they presented as a poster session at the ASHA Convention in November 2017. Mrs. Hanson has a brand new grandchild! Lucas Michael was born October 11 weighing 8 pounds, 1 ounce to her son Blake and his wife, Stacie. Ayden is thrilled with his new baby brother. Blake and Stacie recently moved into their new home in Madison, and they graciously let Mrs. Hanson help decorate. Her son Jacob and his wife Kristen also moved into their new home next door to Mrs. Hanson. Yes, she is ecstatic about that. Her husband is busy with his cotton crop and Matthew is still calling St. Louis home. HUNTER MANASCO M. Hunter Manasco, Ph.D. CCC-SLP completed his doctorate at the University of South Alabama. Dr. Manasco’s areas of specialization include neuroanatomy, aphasia, motor speech disorders, traumatic brain injury, and autism. Dr. Manasco has taught in the field of Speech- Language Pathology for ten years. He has worked clinically in acute care, long-term care, hospice, adult rehabilitation, as well as in school and hospital based pediatrics. He has presented and published numerous research papers in his areas of specialty. He is best for known for his textbook An Introduction to Neurogenic Communication Disorders published by Jones and Bartlett Learning and his children’s book An Exceptional Children’s Guide to Touch published by Jessica Kingsley of London. KATHY SHAPLEY Hello everyone. My name is Kathy Shapley, and I am the new department chair at MUW. I received my Ph.D. from The University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 2003. After working in industry for six years, I began my career in academia in 2009. I am most interested in risk and resiliency factors in young children with communication disorders. In 2017, I completed a three-year term serving on the ASHA Board of Directors and as the National Advisor for National NSSLHA. The best part of my job is working with students and helping shape the future leaders of our profession. I am a native Texan but have lived all over the country. I feel most at home here in the south and love the small- town atmosphere that Columbus has to offer. I hope to have a chance to meet some of the alumni in the future. I am so thrilled to be a part of the program, university and community. I know the W has some wonderful traditions, and I am doing my best to preserve those traditions as we move forward. One of my traditions I am bringing to The W is always telling students, “I believe in you.” After all, don’t we all need to hear that every now and again? CHERYL WRIGHT Hello out there in SLP land. Hope all of you are doing well. I try to keep up with all of you on Facebook and enjoy seeing your pictures of your families. I’m looking forward to moving in to our new building in Summer ’19. It will be special for me. I went to elementary school there and will hopefully retire from there. Y’all be sure and come see us in our new location when we get there. KIM WILLIAMS I am the Graduate Secretary and newest office personnel. I have an A.A.S. in Medical Billing and Coding. I worked for many years as a bookkeeper and office manager of several local companies, but took 13 years off to homeschool my two (now college age) children. My daughter is a Music Ed major here at the W, and my son is studying civil engineering via EMCC/MSU. I like to craft, paint, participate in my church’s activities, travel and swim. I have been married for 23 years to Wendell, and my children are Cody and Jenna. RACHEL HUBER Hello everyone, I am the current audiologist, Dr. Rachel Huber. I completed my doctorate in audiology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, but I am originally from Mississippi. My areas of focus are in amplification, the psychoacoustics of hearing, and the geriatric population. Working in the clinic has been enjoyable, and I look forward to its continuous growth during the next year. HART KAYSER This past year has been wonderful. I mentored 17 students so that they could present their projects at the annual convention of the Mississippi Speech Language Hearing Association. They presented projects that reviewed 7 test instruments and then provided an analysis of possible bias to African American and Hispanic students. The students’ posters were well received by those who attended. I presented a mini seminar on the assessment of Hispanic children. This year, my 7 year old granddaughter began to read to me, and the 4 year old granddaughter learned how to draw a cat. STEPHANIE KELLEY Hey everybody! Just wanted to take a minute a give you an update about me and my life. This is my 2nd year at the “W,” and I am loving it more than I ever could have imagined. It truly feel like I’m at home here. I am busy trying to fill Dr. Harmon’s shoes and teach Basic Diagnostic Procedures this semester, and I am excited to be teaching Program Planning in the spring. Of course, we are also busy in the clinic supervising our new graduate students. On a personal note, most of you know that I have been fostering a little girl since her birth, and on August 6th this year, she officially became Madi Grace Kelley. Words cannot even express how excited we were!! Hope you are all having a great year so far and that you will stop by and visit with us if you get a chance. FACULTY& STAFF

“A new journey to be started. A new promise to be fulfilled.

A new page to be written.”

Welcome to the 2018 edition of the MUW Speech-Language Pathology Program’s annual

newsletter! Each year, a theme is selected for the incoming class of graduate students,

and this year, we proudly present “Superheroes In Training”. We have welcomed 16 new

graduate clinicians who are acquiring the knowledge and training to make them the “Super

Heroes” of our field one day. In the words of Wonder Woman, here is an encouragement

to all the current student clinicians working to become impactful leaders in our corner:

Each summer, first year graduate clinicians have the opportunity to participate in Camp Jabber Jaw.

The MUW chapter of the National Student Speech Language

Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is off to a great start this

year! The first meeting of the year was led by former

NSSLHA officers, Ivy Robbins and Jordan Wade. They gave

new members an introduction to what NSSLHA is and what

it means to be a part of our chapter. New officers for the

2018-2019 year have now been elected, and these girls are

eager to begin serving our chapter. The new officers led the

second meeting of the semester by describing the goals for

the year, as well as asking for input on chapter expectations.

For their first event of the year, MUW’s NSSLHA chapter

participated in Oktober Fest, which is an annual campus

wide event. Members created fun games for children to play,

and interacted with the community to bring awareness to

communication disorders.

On September 12th and 17th, Dr. Huber, Mrs. Hanson

and 6 first year graduate clinicians conducted hearing

screenings on students from Virgil Jones Elementary,

B.F. Liddell Middle School, and Noxubee High School.

Brianna Barrett, a first year graduate clinician,

stated, “It’s important for us to screen hearing of

children in school, because if they aren’t hearing the

sounds, they can’t hear what the teachers are saying,

which affects their learning.” This provides a great

opportunity for students to get hands on experience in

the school districts.

AWARDS

NSSLHA NEWS“SUPER HEAR-OES”

The Mississippi Speech Language and Hearing Association annual conference is always an exciting time for our department. This past April, the conference was hosted in Natchez. Not only did our faculty and students take the opportunity to get away and enjoy the town of Natchez, but they were able to participate in sessions, gleaning useful knowledge from many different experts in our

field.

ASHLEY ALEXANDERHello to everyone!

LYNN HANSONMrs. Louis home.

I feel most at home here in the south and love the small-town atmosphere that Columbus has to offer.

CHERYL WRIGHTHello out there in SLP land.

KIM WILLIAMSI am the Graduate Secretary and newest office personnel.

HART KAYSERThis past year has been wonderful.

STEPHANIE KELLEYHey everybody!
