HISTORICAL AND BIOGRAPHICAL NOTES Bob Priddy is a journalist and historian specializing in Missouri, Jefferson City, and State
Capitol Building history. He worked for 40 years for Missourinet, a radio broadcast company,
before he retired in 2014. He is the author of many books on Missouri and its people and is a
former Board member of the Friends of the Missouri State Archives.

Scope and Content This collection contains historic postcards of Jefferson City and other Missouri locations,
primarily Missouri State Capitol and state government buildings. It also includes Jefferson City
street views, Lake of the Ozarks, Ha Ha Tonka, and a few images from San Francisco and
France.
All the postcards, fronts and backs, have been scanned as 400dpi TIFFs and are available on two
DVDs in the Reference Room.
The fronts of most of the postcards are also on Missouri Digital Heritage (MDH) in the Historic
Postcards of Jefferson City collection online here:

Scope and Content This collection contains original photographs of sites in Jefferson City (primarily the Capitol
Building), Washington, D.C., and Taos, New Mexico. The images concern research the donor,
Bob Priddy, made when writing his book, The Art of the Missouri Capitol.
All the photographs have been scanned as 400dpi TIFFs and are available on DVD in the
Reference Room.

Arrangement: Arranged by category according to donor. Box 6 arranged by subject.
Scope and Content This series contains ~1200 35mm slides of the Missouri Capitol Building, Capitol artists and
artwork, as well as other subjects related to Missouri state history.
The majority of slides are images used in donor’s series of lectures (copyright unclear). Many of
the images are copies of photographs found in other collections within the State Archives or
other repositories. Donor notes images of Benton sketches are rare, as the originals are in a
Kansas City bank vault.
Photographs taken by donor (copyright clear) include slides B1 – O15, taken in 1994 at Belmont,
the home and studio of Gari Melchers, near Falmouth, Virginia. The slides are in segments
according to the paintings Melcher did for the-then Governor’s waiting room. B: Susan Elizabeth
Blow, T: Mark Twain, R: James Rollins, F: Eugene Field, O: miscellaneous other.
The slides were digitized in 2009 and 2013 and are on two DVDs in the Reference Room. Users
should be aware that standard copyright rules apply to these images.

Scope and Content This series contains three-dimensional objects related to the old Capitol or construction and
opening of the new (1913-1918) Capitol. The majority of items were likely given or sold as
souvenirs. Items include buttons, figurines, medals, spoons, cups, platter, paperweight, etc. as
well as stamps commemorating the Louisiana Purchase.
The objects have been photographed from multiple angles and the images saved to DVD. The
DVD is available in the Reference Room. Access to the physical objects is restricted and patrons
should use the DVD instead.

the American flag, and the state seal of Missouri. Text on

advantageously located in Jefferson City. The State has
an area of 69,415 square miles, and was admitted to the
Union in 1821. The golden rod is the floral emblem of the
State. Missouri derived its name in 1821 from its
principal river, the word, in the Sioux language, meaning

made to look like an oil painting. This postcard style is
called an "oilette" and was purveyed by Tuck Postcard
Company in England. The foreground features quite a
few bare trees and some walking paths with people on
them. The state seal is in the upper right corner. Text on
the back of the card reads, "The Missouri State Capitol is
advantageously located in Jefferson City. The State has
an area of 69,415 square miles, and was admitted to the
Union in 1821. The golden rod is the floral emblem of the
State. Missouri derived its name in 1821 from its
principal river, the word, in the Sioux language, meaning
'muddy water.'"

celebrate New Capitol Day, the day of a special election
to decide whether or not to construct a new capitol
building for Missouri. The prior Capitol burned on
2/5/1911. There is a streetcar in the middle of the road
and regular automobiles elsewhere on the road.
Businesses line both sides of the street. Banners
advertising an event taking place Aug. 7 are strung across
the street and one is pasted to the front of the trolley as
well. Back of card postmarked 11/18/1912 and

over and saw we were low in oil. Had burned out
connecting rod bearing. Could have reached Springfield
on what we had had it not happen."

stables as seen from the water tower. Text on back of
postcard reads, "Hahatonka and the 'Castle' - Daniel
Boone is said to have trapped beaver in 1801 on what is
now Hahatonka Lake. The region was visited in 1806 by a
member of Pike's Expedition, and was described by
Henry M. Brackenridge in his Views of Louisiana,
published in 1814. Robert M. Snyder, Kansas City, in
1905, built the house that has since been known as the
'Castle.'" Back of card postmarked 6/14/1940 and
addressed to Miss Anna Marie Gustafson, Axtell, NE.
Sender writes: "Dear Anna - Sorry you couldn't come all
the way down here. It is beautiful. We are close to
Bagnell Dam. We are going farther south & then up to St
Louis for a ball game. Will write a letter when I get home.

of a rocky cliff, this edifice is suggestive of a medieval
castle on the Rhine. Built in 1905 on a 5,000-acre estate
as a private residence by Robert Snyder, street railway
magnate of Kansas City, Hahatonka is now an inn. It is
constructed of native stone, has a patio-type interior
with twenty massive rooms." Back of card addressed to
