you happen to have an old crystal whiskey carafe of your great-grandparents laying around in the attic, it is time to get it out

now. After years of understated design in rough materials as wood, textiles and metal, a touch of bling bling is ready to enter our homes again. And what a coincidence: exactly this year the French crystal-specialist Baccarat is celebrating its 250th birthday. And wherever there is a design celebra-tion, Japanese creative studio Nendo is around. For Baccarat, Nendo turned the iconic Harcourt glass of 1841 into a modern chess game.

But the Nendo boys are not the only crystal fans. Patricia Urquiola created a ‘Jellies Family’ collec-tion for Kartell, Arik Levy designed crystal light-ing for Lasvit, Marcel Wanders made puppets for Barovier&Toso, Lee Broom added some crystal to a light bulb and Scholten & Baijings joined Matri-no Gamper for some crystal glassware for J. Hill’s Standard. O yeah, and let’s not forget Philippe Starck, who used crystal glass for an Axor vortex faucet.

Even tough the kitchen is small, thanks to the wooden floor, pre-cious use of marble and accents like the golden tap the room has the needed ‘grandeur’. Jospeh Dirand is an multifunctional architect: he has designed shops for Givenchy, private homes like a penthouse in NY, hotels like the Habita Monterrey in Mexico and many more…

The Hard Rock Hotel in Ibiza is very close to the local airport, which is nice when you arrive, but a bit less nice when airplanes are raging over your head at the beach.

During the nineties, they were all over the place: the Hard Rock Café T-shirts. Wherever you would go on a holiday, there would always be a Hard Rock Café in the neighborhood. Since then, it has been a little quiet (which is strange when your brand is called Hard Rock). For the past years, the Hard Rock team – which belongs to the Palladium group – has opened several hotels in the States and some exotic Asian destinations like Bali. Just a week ago, the very first European Hard Rock Hotel opened his doors at the Playa d’en Bossa in Ibiza. Known as thé ultimate party destination, Ibiza is an ob-vious choice for a hotel that speaks to music lovers. The hotel is decorated with the best of international design brands, such as Kettal, Edra, Tom Dixon and Hans J. Wegner. Starting price for one night is about 300 euros in summer. If you think that is expensive, wait untill you see the menu of the Sublimotion restaurant in the hotel. For a menu served by chef Paco Roncero, you pay about 2000 euros per person. The most expensive menu on the globe. Rock on!

— 4. THE HARD ROCK HOTEL —

The Beach Club looks like a show-room for outdoor design brands. Kettal, Gandia Blasco, Pedrali, Tribù,… They are all represented next to the amazing beach.

Tapas joint Estado Puro combines the old Spanish traditions (like tiling and mosaics) with contemporary fea-tures like a giant rooster and modern design. You can chill out in one of the Kettal and Kartell chairs on the magnificent terrace.

After a night of clubbing (and hence drinking), the spa is a great way to renew your energy.

In the lounge room of the hotel, featuring the Getsuen flower-like chairs by Edra, even the pillars are tattooed. This must be Hard Rock.

JANE

In a former chapel in the Belgian city of Antwerp, Dutch chef Sergio Herman and Nick Briel opened up a new restaurant, ‘The Jane”. With cocktail bar, kitchen in a glass basin, church windows of Studio Job and a huge light sculpture of PsLab this restaurant is an experience all by itself. Dutch interior designer Piet Boon chose comfortable seating elements, warm textiles and ingenious sound absorbing panels which make the chapel a convivial and warm place. The food is splendid – Ser-gio Herman is after all a three star Michelin chef who closed his former restaurant Oud Sluis in Zeeland, Holland. Another fantastic place of the same kitchen crew is restaurant & bar ‘Pure C’ at Cadzand near the Belgian/Dutch border at the coast.

OVAL OFFICE

Summer is all about exotic prints: palm trees, pineap-ples, beautiful flowers and flamingo’s. And while all fashion and interior design brands are doing their very best to get some of those tropical prints in store on time for high summer, Lon-don based House of Hack-ney has already been doing this kind of things for years. The brand was created by Frieda Gormley and Javvy M. Royle in 2011.
