Mixed-Use Urban Design

A proposal for a new mixed use urban waterfront development in the heart of Gosford questioning Australian urban waterfront strategies. This site is currently involved in intense debate between State Government and developers, this redevelopment being the key to the future growth of Gosford and its cultural identity. The principles of ‘housing and monument’ were explored as an investigation in constructing a new urban fabric which becomes part of a new collective history. ‘Housing and monument’ relates to the bringing together of the functions of a city at the same time reinterpreting the ‘urban artefact’ and presenting architecture, as a whole, as a work of art. A new urban tapestry is presented which

exposes the decaying elements of a city as a shrine to the past. A critique of the existing area provides a springboard for renewal. Formal boundaries of current living areas impose separation leading to the loss of social interaction, social values and ultimately a breakdown in society. The reintroduction of living with the street and the abolishing of formal boundaries begin to form a scene for community interaction. The built forms merely become a mediating structure of urban voids and a gateway to the interior world. The architecture inhabits the void which determines the characteristics of each urban space.A journey transcending physical scale.
