Unity Through Mutual Understanding & Cooperation

On August 28, 1963, millions of Americans gathered under theLincoln Memorial to hear these words from Rev. Dr. Martin LutherKing, Jr., and more to follow in today's program:

Today, two score and five years after Dr. Kings I Have aDream speech, we are gathered here, on the eve of a milestoneachievement for African-American people the Inauguration ofan African-American President of the United States of America.

And there is still much work to be done in the realm of racial,

social and economic justice. But let us also pause to take note ofour current victory and crossroads.

Because this is also a milestone achievement for Civil Rights,Non-Violent Protest, Civil Disobedience, Compassionate Com-munication, and peaceful co-existence between peoples andnations. It is a milestone achievement for Faith-based initiatives,Interfaith activism, and for those people of good will who are notworking within any Faith tradition as well.

Ultimately, we stand at the threshold of a momentus victory for

humankind, for the ideal of Justice itself.

Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolicshadow we stand today, signed the Emancipation Proc-

lamation. This momentous decree came as a great beaconlight of hope to millions of Negro slaves. It came as ajoyous daybreak to end the long night of their captivity. But one hundred years later, the Negro still is not free.
