Kent Village of the Year 2009 WELL DONE MINSTER !! Due in the most part to the great sell the village representatives gave to the judges it is our pleasure to tell you that Minster-in-Thanet has been bestowed the accolade of Calor Kent Village of the Year 2009 and now go forward to the represent the County in the Regional/National finals. First round judging for this is on Monday 28th September - so keep your fingers crossed. Minster was awarded a Highly Commended in the Business category, 2nd place in Sustainability and 1st in both Community Life and Communications. Paul Willins and Nora Aldous (MM) attended the award ceremony, on 1st September, in Ashford and came home laden with a Commemorative Plaque, 4 Framed Awards, 5 Certificates, 2 Cheques totalling £500, plus authorisation letters to collect 3 trees which are to be planted in and around the village. The Plaque has since been mounted on the post just below the Village Sign outside of the Gossip Shop, where it can easily be seen by everyone entering the village via Tothill St. Two large Village of the Year signs have also been erected, one at the top of Tothill the other in Monkton Road (near top of Sheriffs Court Lane). These will remain in place just for one year. Press interest the following week was unbelievable we had numerous radio and newspaper interviews, plus photo shoots and even interest from Isle Magazine. So well done to all concerned and thank you to the whole village as it really was a team effort, that involved us all, whether or not you actually realised it. The judges were particularly impressed with the Church, the Abbey, the All Weather Pitch, this Magazine and associated publications, plus numerous other everyday things that go to make Minster the great community that it is. Well what a month September was, firstly the Kent Village ofthe Year awards followed by days of radio and newspaperinterviews, then the installation of a new Major at the SalvationArmy and finally the huge fire in Monkton Road, it all happens inMinster !!

Yellow lines are still the talk of the village, but I believe theParish Council have asked for a Holding Order on them whilst theyseek information from the school and collate traffic movementsfrom the CCTV cameras in Monkton Road.

One of our letter writers last month said something about theunder used car park in Monkton Road, well I’ve personally beendoing some self monitoring of this over the past month and duringthe working day it is far more often full to overflowing than it everis empty !

The new East Kent Access Road Phase 2 is about to be started. This runs from the Mount Pleasant Roundabout at the top of

the hill along towards Cliffsend and then down across the fields toTubb’s Corner at Ebbsfleet, a plan of its route is shown across thecentre pages of this issue. This is bound to have repercussions ontraffic movements in and out of the village, for quite a long time,so please remember to leave extra time for your journeys in andout of Minster.

NOW- there was no space left elsewhere in this issue, due totoo much available copy, (we’ve had to leave some things out again)but I was asked to thank all of those villagers that went along andsupported the “Wheels for Ralph” Fun Day in the Rec, organiserChristine Chittenden told me they raised just in excess of £1,000on the day. So from me, thank you Minster residents you are alwaysgreat at supporting worthy causes.

Did anyone notice that it was my car in Poor Parking lastmonth ? See, even I’m not immune to being pulled up for mymisdemeanours - don’t know why I even parked liked that, but I’mclaiming I was forced to get on the path by another inconsiderate

driver, that’s my story and I’msticking to it !!

Just to round it off, here isa picture of Paul and Norareceiving the Winners award atthe beginning of the month. Agreat evening with some greatcompany and good grub !! Thechocolate cake was delicious.

That’s it, no more space.Who said thank goodness!!Oh - where’s Zac today?

Archive EnquiryI am trying to find out surnames of some of the patrons of the

White Horse Inn, Church Street, Minster in the early 1960s. I havebeen contacted by John Matheison, who lives in Aberdeenshire, whose uncle and aunt ran the pub then, John was serving in the RAFat this time and while on leave stayed at the White Horse andsometimes helped behind the bar. He remembers some old FirstWorld War veterans who frequented the pub, and now, because of aninterest in the First World War, would like to find out their surnamesso that he can look up their military records.

John says that he remembers them well and I quote from his letter:

“One wonderful old chap, who always claimed his chair bythe fire of a Sunday lunchtime, had been part of the Army ofOccupation after the Great War. Tom would ‘go on’ about‘Dunkel Lager’ which I think is Dark Beer.’

Another old timer, who insisted on sitting by thedartboard, on being bought a whisky, would knock it back, remarking, “It wouldn’t fill ‘an ‘ollow tooth!” Yet another oldgent, who had a cleft palate and a harelip, had volunteered in1914 and been rejected. He commented, Can you imagine metrying to say, ‘Alt who goes there?” He was conscripted in1916!

I think most of the locals served in the Buffs, the East KentRegiment, the old 3rd Foot. Mr Spicer was an exception to therule, he had been in the Kent Yeomanry, and had served inPalestine. He would go on about his square-bashing, hissergeant major had made a great impression on him, “I ‘opeyou’re all God fearing men, becos’ I’m God Almighty!” MrSpicer went on to say that when they went into action, theyheld a spare horse by the reins because, “Them Turks wereevil blighters, they would shoot the horse and not the man!”

Then there were the Harnett brothers. The youngerbrother had served in Mesopotamia, now Iraq, and alwaysbemoaned the fact, by the time he returned to the village thestreet party held for the returning heroes from France waslong past. He received little sympathy from the veterans ofthe Western Front! I can recall him standing in the public bar, thumbs hooked into the braces of his bib overalls, saying, “Iwere a sniper”. At the time, in my ignorance I thought, GordonBennett, this country yokel, a sniper? Of course since then Ihave discovered marksmanship is only part of being a sniper, knowledge of the countryside and field-craft is every bit asimportant, which made him ideal material.

The elder brother, ‘Nipper’ Harnett, walked with a severe limpand always used a stick. Nipper hadn’t been wounded in action; itwas a legacy of an injury sustained in a German salt mine. All theother old boys used to rib him for having been a P.O.W. but henever retaliated. I think he revelled in being the centre ofattention, I can see him now, holding his ground in the middle ofthe pub, his eyes twinkling and his pipe gripped in his teeth at adefiant angle!

One old chap hadn’t been a local lad, he was a Londoner andhad retired to the village. He was an ostler in civilian life and endedthe war as a sergeant major in the Royal Artillery, he was verymuch the ‘old soldier’, a real ‘Jack the Lad’.

A grand body of men, they were my introduction to the FirstWorld War. If I had known how my interest would grow, Iprobably would have hounded them for information.”

John goes on to say that the first person mentioned, Tom, was anex-council worker, a retired steamroller driver, possibly not married. Heowned a car, which was quite exceptional in the early sixties and alwaysparked his black Standard right outside the public bar window, he possiblylived some distance from the pub.

John said the old chap who was rejected by the army in 1914 that hisdaughter, Ivy Norton or Horton was the pub cleaner.

Mr Spicer lived very close to the White Horse, his grandson would payan occasionalvisit; he was training to be a pilot with BOAC at the time.

Finally I have been told by John that Mr and Mrs Harnett lived in thecrossing keepers house and Mrs Harnett being employed as the officialcrossing keeper, this being at a time when the gates were manned andopened by hand. Many of us still remember Mrs Harnett, and as children thedread in having to ring the bell to get the gates open to cross the line withour bikes. John is looking for the Christian names of the Harnett brothers.

Should anyone know of these veterans, and their surnames, pleasecould you contact me, or leave any information for my attention at thelibrary. It would be nice to help John, after all these years get theinformation he seeks.

I have gleaned the following from the Kelly’s Street directories of theearly sixties, and assume that Ernest Harnett was the crossing keepershusband.Ernest Harnett - 1, Station Road Frank Harnett - 84, Monkton RoadGeorge Harnett - 29, Rose Gardens. Herbert Hamett -1, Domneva RoadMiss Harnett - 46, Durlock Leslie Harnett - 48, DurlockGeoffrey Spicer - 7, Augustine Road. Harold Spicer - Rose Cottage, WayThank you Danny Day,

Apology from the EditorI must admit to misreading the Bowls Club report last month and

not only did I get a members name wrong but I even selected the wronggender !!

My sincere apologies to Barbara White (Babs) whom I renamedBob.

However, in my defence, I’m not really sure if it was my eyes orthe Bowls Captains handwriting that was the initial problem.

It was especially tragic because it was the first time Babs had wona club competition and her moment of glory passed in an article thatgot the facts wrong. I stand corrected and have given myself a slap onthe wrist (the good one!) Ray

TRADING STANDARDS ALERTSTwo messages this month

1/ Cold Callers (again) selecting elderly people in Kent - pressurewashing drives, ineffectively and for large sums of money. Then takingthe homeowners to the bank to withdraw the cash. Be warned !!2/ This time for businesses - be very wary of Advertising Agenciesoffering space in local community magazines. They usually explain themagazine is linked in some way to the emergency services or localschools in the hope businesses feel obliged to assist the local community. What action should you take, if you have been cold called aboutadvertising you should terminate the call immediately as the ruse is to getyou to answer a couple of questions which when played back give theimpression you have entered a contract with them. Ensure members ofyour staff are aware of this to avoid falling for it when answering thephone. Be cautious and aware of who you are dealing with.

MINSTER TWINNING ASSOCIATIONBonjour Mes Amis and welcome to more exciting news from the

Association! After last month’s marathon review of our successful summer events,

it remains for me now to once again reiterate the position where theTwinning now stands. As has been mentioned many times in the past, every resident in Minster is a member of the Twinning. That means youcan attend the monthly meetings and engage in suggestions and/orcriticisms with the committee as to what and where we can improve ourcommitment to the village.

The main focus for our sponsorship in the past, and hopefully in thefuture, is to help fund the Exchange trip to Armbouts-Cappel for the Year5 children at Minster Primary. Also to host and meet the cost of breakfastfor the children and teachers from Armbouts when they are over here fortheir part of the exchange. This is not the only sponsorship available, butin order to find out what you, the readers, and members would like, thenwe need your support.

As was mentioned in last month’s MM, we will shortly be losing ourChairman, Secretary, and Treasurer. We need to fill these positions at theAGM in November in order to continue with the great work the Twinninghas achieved so far and also to continue the Exchange visits for Year 5children who benefit so much from this.

I’m sure also that the village children would love to continue to see StMildred the Nun, our very own Giant (Geant) in the village festivitiesnext year.

So, what about all you Mums and Dads with children who haverecently started Year 5? Why not come along and have a say in theExchange? Join the Committee for a year and, if its not for you, then atleast you can say you gave it a shot and also took an active interest in yourchild’s visit to France.

Being on the Committee gives you a vote; meetings are only once amonth (but that could change with the next elected Committee). Give ita try, it’s not too difficult. Our next and last meeting before the AGM willbe on Wednesday 7th October above the Library. So why not come alongand see what we are about, then join us at the same venue on Thursday12th November for the AGM and Election of Officers for the nextsuccessful year.

If we have no Chairman, Secretary and Treasurer then poor StMildred may have to be Mothballed and never again see the light of day,and our future village children will be left asking……..Who was StMildred?

Remember Minster does MatterA bientôt!

MINSTER-IN-THANET WI September’s meeting was a lively and colourful one, thanks to a

display of Morris Dancing from the Offcumduns who are based in Eastry.Mrs Marge Wiltcher gave a talk on the origins of Morris Dancing,

with mention of literary references as early as 1303. After a videopresentation of the different styles of dancing, and costumes worn, the Offcumduns(meaning: “Strangers or Incomers”) took the floor, and after their super display someof our members volunteered to “have a go”. Mention here of one of the Offcumduns- 9 year old Lizzie from Minster Mayhems, who saw our member through her paces!

Readers of last month’s report in MM will recall the report on the “CelebrateKent” exhibition - at the same time of placing the report, the results were not to hand, and we can now proudly report that out of 61 high-standard entries, Minster werevery well placed; the winning entry scored 165 points, then came 2 ties at 2nd place, and 3 ties at 3rd, followed by us with 160 ½ points.

We are looking forward to a busy run-up to Christmas, with another visit plannedto see the filming of the Alan Titchmarsh Show; Sunshine Club outings; Dabble Day;games evenings; handicraft and crafts group meetings, and the Scrabble evening - allin addition to our monthly branch meetings and coffee and chat mornings!

At the next branch meeting on Tuesday 13th October at 7.30pm in the VillageHall, Mr. Rob Masters will give a talk on The Joys of Christmas - new members andvisitors will be made welcome. There will be a competition, for 3 muffins, the firsttwo placed to represent Minster at the Acol Group Meeting later in the month.

MINSTER MAYHEMS Usual call for anyone new to join as we are just starting practise for

next year. We will be dancing for late night shopping, hopefully oppositeAttwells. Have just had a very successful day - invited by WantsumMorris Men to dance with them and 7 other sides for Hop Hoodening in

Canterbury. Procession through the Cathedral Precinct, service in the Quire, a danceoutside in the main courtyard; then on to dance along the High Street and in RoseSquare. Many sides were highly complimentary of the children - the level of dancingand the different dances that they knew. Once again they have been fantasticambassadors for Minster, and the village should be proud to have such dedicatedchildren (and parents) showing what a great village we are. Dominique

Dear Editor,I have read with interest the two articles you published in the

September, Minster Matters - “Yellow Lines in Monkton Road LongOverdue” and “Yellow Lines — Is it such a huge deal?”

I would like to ask, how often do those correspondents use the villageshops, if they used the village shops they would know the effect theseyellow lines will have on all the businesses who are trying to compete withthe major chain supermarkets that have thousands of car park spaces.

If the pavements had not been widened, this problem would not haveoccurred. The car park is currently overflowing and if further parkingrestrictions are imposed, where can the customers park to shop. The villagetraders are fortunate to have the support of the majority of the village whoshop locally and keep the community alive. If the yellows do go ahead, itwill affect most of the traders in Minster and will gradually lead to thedemise of the village life.

When there is nothing left in the village and you do not have a car orneed something quickly there will be nothing available. Minster is a verydesirable village to live in because it offers all the amenities.

Before proceeding with the lines, please check the surroundingvillages where there are no shops and how these villages regret losing theircommunity shops — please stop Minster from becoming a ghost town, instead of trying to shut the little shops down, encourage the traders bybringing a more positive attitude to the village life.

Think of all the elderly people who DO NOT HAVE CARS and relyon the village.

Kent Village of the Year - ThanksI would like to take this opportunity to thank Ray Owen and the

Minster Matters team, together with Paul Willins and Kyla Lamb for allplaying such a huge part in helping Minster to win the Kent Village of theYear award.

A number of people work extremely hard for the benefit of thisvillage but do not always receive the recognition they deserve, this beinga particular example, with praise going to and being received by the ParishCouncil.

I hope they acknowledge these background workers.(Name and address supplied)

Thanks from Minster Matters - MM would like to say a special thankyou to everyone who has given us donations recently, with an extraspecial mention to the Show Committee for their most unexpected gift.

COMPUTER CORNER Internet Services Dial up vs Broadband

If you are one of the small percentage of people still using a dial-up internetservice, it may be time to have a rethink. Technology is moving fast anddial-up is beginning to struggle to keep up. There are many reasons toswitch to broadband; her are just a few:

1. SpeedI recently visited a customer who needed to use her dial-up internet serviceto ‘download’ a large item from the internet. After 2 hours and almostfinished, she received a phone call which interrupted her connection andshe had to start over again. In the end, I downloaded the item for her on mybroadband service – it took 4 minutes.2. TimeUnfortunately, most websites these days are built with only broadbandusers in mind. With a mass of pictures and text and fancy flashing imageson each page, it can make a page very ‘heavy’. Trying to squeeze such aheavy page down a little dial-up pipe is hard work and requires a lot of timeconsuming hanging around. Broadband’s super strength makes viewingmost websites a breeze, taking just seconds.3. CommunicationYou can use your telephone and use the internet at the same time –particularly important if you have an emergency or safety serviceconnected to your phone.4. Cheaper and easier than everLike many household utilities, broadband usually comes with a 12 or 18month contract. Prices vary from around £6 per month to £25 per monthand there are many companies to choose from including BT, Sky, O2, andTalk Talk. Set up instructions are written for ‘normal’ people these daysand you don’t need an IT degree to do it.5. Open up a new worldWatch TV on your computer, play radio from around the world, video chatwith your family and friends, send and receive photographs quickly andeasily – all things that a dial-up service finds pretty hard, if not impossible,to do.

Note – if you have a very old computer (8+ years), it may not be able to beset up with broadband, so it’s worth checking before you go ahead. YourPC must be running Windows 2000 or later, have a CD-ROM drive and aspare ‘ethernet’ port on the back.So all you dial-up people out there, be brave, go for it!

A BIRD’S EYE VIEW by “ED” THE PEACOCKHi everyone! Thanks for all your support throughout the

year and reading my new column here. It’s been a funny old year, some really great things and some not so good, but I’m here to tellthe tale and that is always a bonus.

My weeks events start on Monday - when I usually strollround the marshes and then up to Watchester Lane, where I do aspot of insect eating round the plants and veggies, however I tend

not to visit one garden, because I’m out of favour there. Then I make my way up toMorton’s Fork because I get some lovely titbits left over from their fabulous SundayCarvery.

Tuesday - I popped up to see Ray from “Minster Matters” for a bit of advice oneditorial and political correctness before writing my column.

Wednesday and Friday - I do a bit of traffic calming by sitting in the road so thelads can slow down and have a chat. “Pulled any nice birds lately Ed ?” one of themshouts - they know I only get the ugly ones!

Drama in “The Gossip Shop” on Thursday, when a stranger sat in Danny Day’schair, and then poor old Emily got her tummy stuck in the can opener whilst doingher favourite sandwich of bacon and banana (that’s hormones for you - notsomething us blokes have to worry about). Did notice however No.45’s nets were abit mucky.

Friday - How fantastic to see my village winning prizes for it’s beauty andcommunity spirit - in the local paper. Aren’t we lucky to live here! Don’t knowwhere they got that ugly bunch from in the picture, when they could have had me.

Saturdays are great - I usually nip into the church before the brides arrive and getthe last of the green fly off the floral arrangements and wait to see the Bride herself.Unfortunately some of the guests have such large hats that I can’t see past them(some the size of a Las Vegas Show Girl costume) - that’s when I jump into the treesbefore making my way home.

It’s amazing what you can see going on from a roof - grey underwear onwashing lines, who forgets to draw the curtains before getting out of the bath, whoseroof needs attention and best of all - whose writing anonymous letters to my mate -Michael. It’s all in the next issue!

If you’d like to hear more of my adventures or have some gossip to add, thenplease write and tell me: c/o Minster Matters or c/o Michael, The Old Vicarage,Minster.

Kind regards, see you round the village - ED x.07739 486 707

MAJOR DENISE COOPERTHE NEW COMMANDING OFFICER AT MINSTER

SALVATION ARMYMinster Matters welcomes Major Denise Cooper to the village

and we thank the Salvation Army for their very kind invitationto her Installation Service. The service and the singing were greatas was the tea, that we were also invited to, later in the afternoon.

The evening service saw “Joyous Noise” in great voice, whilstthinking especially of John who lay in hospital at that time.

Major Denise had us all in stitches with the “who am I” quiz, that she inflicted on some of her Officers, but I feel sure they will

forgive her “this time !”.I am not a very religious man, but I truly enjoyed both of the Services and I

even sang along, although not too loudly, in the hope that my off key voice wasn’theard above those who can obviously make a much better job of it.

The eats were delicious and those in the kitchen make a “mean cup of tea”, sohopefully I might get invited back to sample it again sometime.

They very kindly lent us some tablesfor the various stalls that day. The day went so welland we could not have done it without all the help fromso many kind and generous people.

Thank you from Marvyn Attwell for those who helpedhim in Ben’s Supermarket on the 11th Septemberwhilst he was again having a “funny”. Marvyn says“I remember Janet Johnson and Ben himself beingthere, but I would also like to thank all the otherswhose help was given to me”.

ALTURNERTIVE 2“Alturnertive2” offers visitors to Margate a chance toto see another innovative new show by the newly-formed artist-led group, Alturnertive. The show, dueto open on Friday 25th September at the HarbourArm Gallery, will display the work of some of Kent’smost talented emerging artists and art students. Some of these artists have exhibited widely, whereas for some this will be their first chance toshow their work outside of their art school.Curator of Alturnertive2, Caron Ottewell, feels that,“there are many fantastic places in Kent forestablished artists to exhibit their work, but there isa lack of opportunities for artists not at that stage oftheir career. It is so important to create opportunitiesfor newly graduated and emerging artists, to stop thecounty’s best new talent moving away from the area.”

This new collection show follows less than a monthafter their successful first exhibition which showedthe work of 29 artists over four different sites inMargate.
