Student Creates Logo for Communication Arts
Mill Springs’ CommunicationArts School is well-known as aclose-knit community. This
strong sense of “family” sparked 8th gradestudent, Lindsey Flax to create a logowhich she feels displays the sense of community she and other students have asa result of being part of the program. “Ijust feel like we’re a family, and I wantedus to have our own symbol,” said Lindsey.Other Communication Arts’ studentsliked it so much; they’ve decided to makethe logo into a t-shirt design.
MSA Teacher Presents at CEC Conference
PreUpper teacher, Victoria Jones, travelled to Nashville, TN in April for the Council forExceptional Children National Convention to present a lecture concerning the educa-tion of children with “dual-exceptionalities”. These are students who fit under both the
“gifted” and “learning disabled” exceptionalities. Victoria based her lecture on current researchand her experience at Mill Springs where all of the students are recognized for their gifts whilereceiving support for various learning issues. The many lectures and display booths at the con-ference were packed with information and Victoria brought back loads of it to share with otherMSA faculty members.

Senior Presentations
Senior Presentation Week is a time forthe graduating class to shine! All eyesare on them. Seniors choose a topic
that is interesting to them, research it, plan toengage the audience with pleasing graphicsand data, and finally present their work to theMSA Community during a two day event towhich parents, teachers, and students are allinvited. This year students chose from threeformats: Process Analysis, Persuasion andControversial topics. Each year, students dedicate about eight
weeks to prepare for the event. Upper Schoolteacher, Gail Kreher, who organizes the eventeach year, provides 22 pages of guidance andrequires regular submissions from studentsalong the way. “Students have the chance topush themselves out of a comfortable place, beyond high school expectations and into thenext level of academic achievement,” saidMrs. Kreher. “This orchestrated pressure prepares them well for the rigors and heat ofcollege studies.”
Alumnus Visits MSA
MSA Alumni, Chris Magill, Class of2009 is now attending school as afreshman at the University of Arizona.
He spoke to the students in CommArts abouthow to be successful in college. Chris talkedabout the importance of time managementand meeting deadlines. “If you have a learningdisability, you can get a lot of help, you justneed to learn to ask for it,” he stated. The students were full of questions about collegelife: “Forget the book stuff. . . how’s the food?”asked a concerned student. Chris hasn’tpicked a major yet, but is leaning toward a career in teaching physical education.

Day Tripping to Washington DC by Todd Sentell
Nine GA History Honors students, along with Jennifer Kramer and Todd Sentell, recently enjoyed the annual PreUpper School day trip to Washington, DC. Catchingan early flight to DC, they toured several sites then returned that same night to Atlanta.
Visiting the American History Museum and the National Air & Space Museum along the National Mall and then ending the day at the new International Spy Museum. In the National Museum of American History, students saw a letter George Washington
had written. To actually see his handwriting, the way he wrote, and to read the letter was veryexciting. Will Starr was amazed at what was displayed at the International Spy Museum, andwas stunned at the lengths countries around the world will go to in order to gather intelligence. Will said, “It’s all in an effort to keep us safe and to possibly avert conflicts with other countries… but, boy, we sure are a sneaky people!”
Tumbling Waters
On April 26, the Middle School Level L’s and R’s went to Tumbling Waters, NorthGeorgia. The trip served as a learning opportunity in which students performed testson the water; studied the creatures in the river; hiked; dug for amethysts; and learned
about birds and scavengers.

The GHOST ProgramComes to Mill Springs
On Thursday, March 25th, two students from Georgia Tech (AlexSharenko and Owen Hildreth)
presented the GHOST program to studentsin PreUpper, CommArts, and selected students of the Upper School. GHOSTstands for Georgia High School Outreach for Science and Technology. It is run by undergraduate and graduate students in theMaterials Science and Engineering programat Georgia Tech.Alex Sharenko and Owen Hildreth talked
to the students about Materials Science andexplained how it affects various parts of ourlives and the future of our country. MaterialsScience involves manipulating materials tobring out desirable qualities and reduce non-desired ones. To demonstrate how the proper-ties of materials can be changed, a squash ballwas bounced repeatedly and then put in someliquid nitrogen, which is at a temperature ofabout -400ºF. Moments later, the ball was retrieved and bounced again. It shatteredwith a loud explosion sending shards of thefrozen plastic across the floor. The liquid
nitrogen was used later in the program todemonstrate the Meissner Effect that occurswhen substances become superconductors atlow temperatures.Students and teachers both agreed the
presentation definitely sparked the curiosityof our students and may lead them to thefield of science as a career!
PreUpper students Jon Mark Brasher and Bai-ley Monette watch as a magnet demonstratesthe Meissner Effect as it levitates above a su-perconductor. This was one of the demonstra-tions using liquid nitrogen performed byrepresentatives from Georgia Tech’s School ofMaterials Science and Engineering.
CommunicationArts Students LearnImportant SkillsDuring ValuesClasses
This past spring, the CommArtshigh school students participatedin a seven-week workshop on the
Seven Habits of Highly Effective Teens. The workshop was taught by former MillSprings’ parent, Becky Jarrell, who hasspecialized in leadership and communica-tion training and change managementsince 1990.
Based on the best-selling book bySean Covey, The Seven Habits of HighlyEffective TeensWorkshop helps studentspractically apply personal leadership prin-ciples to the tough choices they face everyday. Utilizing relevant interactive exercises, plus humor and videos, students have anopportunity to gain greater control oftheir lives, build relationships high intrust, and improve their self confidenceand interpersonal skills.
Track & Field
MSA’s track and field team had a wonderful season with 3athletes qualifying for the GISA State Championship in Albany. Chris Thorne placed 3rd in the high jump; Jake
Lipsitz placed 7th in the 300m hurdles and 8th in the 110m hurdles;Peyton Lockwood placed 7th in the 3200m run. At the AAC Tournament the varsity team earned second place as
the Conference Runner-Ups. “We are so proud of all of our track andfield athletes”, said coach Victoria Jones. “As we head into summer, many of our athletes will continue to compete in the summer compe-titions through PT Elite track club, which is the group that handledour timing equipment and hosted the Middle School State Meet.”Athletes participating in summer track are eligible to compete in theJunior Olympics.
Baseball Finishes Championship Runnerup
Three senior players said goodbye to MSA baseball this year and will be sorely missed…Andrew Smoltz took with him theDefensive Player of the Year Award; Jared Sherman was given
the team’s Most Improved Player Award; and Zack Moore will be terribly missed as a favorite of both players and coaches. Manager PaulManners has graduated and will leave shoes nearly impossible to filland Scorekeeper Catherine Simpson is also leaving and will be so difficult to replace. Other players to be recognized are Jake Kamrass, voted team MVP and 8th grade sensation Addison Reed, voted by theleague All Conference.
The Mustangs have several young players returning and the futurelooks bright. Hard work and dedication can turn MSA into champi-onship contenders. Several players are competing in summer or fallleagues and should return in top condition for next year’s campaign.
Tennis
It’s been a fantastic year for Mill Springs’ sports…especially for our tennis team! The girls’ team won their third straight AtlantaAthletic Conference Division Championship led by juniors Holly
Thillet and Mallory Oberholtzer who also won the girls doubleschampionship. The boys’ tennis team was a finalist this past seasonwith only one player lost as a graduating senior. Their future for theteam seems bright for now as they look forward to another winningseason next year.
