Russian FM sees Russia-NATOmissile project as “test”

MOSCOW, 22 May—The Russia-NATO project to builda joint missile defence system for Europe is a “practicaltest” of cooperation between the two sides, ForeignMinister Sergei Lavrov said Saturday.

He called the project “an absolutely concrete practicaltest” for whether the two sides are capable of building ajoint “undivided” security system for the Europeancontinent. Meanwhile, Lavrov noted that negotiationswith the United States and NATO were proceedingslowly. “We are convinced that we should have startedwith coordinating a joint concept and joint architecture ofa future European missile defence system.

The process is moving ahead, although slowly,”Lavrov said at a press conference in Russia’s westmostregion Kaliningrad after meeting with Polish and Germancolleagues.

Russia and NATO agreed to cooperate on the so-called Euro missile shield during the Russia-NATOCouncil summit in Lisbon in November 2010.

NATO insists there should be two independentsystems that exchange information, while Russia favorsa joint system with full-scale interoperability and demandsNATO to guarantee that the system would not be aimedagainst Russian targets. —Internet

NEW YORK, 22 May—Does Google’s mobile Android2.3 operating system, aka Gingerbread, lie beneath itstablet-only Android 3.0 os, aka Honeycomb?

A modder by the name of Graffix0214 has discovereda way to unlock the Gingerbread user interface on hisDell Streak 7 tablet, which runs Honeycomb, by simplychanging the system’s pixel settings.

Using the app “LCDDensity for Root,” he changedthe LCD pixel density setting from 160 to above 170,then rebooted. The tablet then displayed a Gingerbreadlogin interface. You can revert back to Honeycomb bysimply changing the pixel density back to 160, he said.Check out his demonstration in the video below.

“It’s safe to say that Honeycomb wasn’t built fromthe ground up. Looks like it was taken from Gingerbread,”Graphix0214 concluded.

Perhaps Android 4.0, codenamed “Ice CreamSandwich,” which isn’t expected until the fourth quarter,is already in place. At Mobile World Congress inFebruary, Google CEO Eric Schmidt suggested that IceCream Sandwich will combine elements of Gingerbreadand Honeycomb:

“The two of them – notice that starts with a G and thenext one starts with an H. You can imagine the follow-on will start with an I and it will be named after a dessertand it will combine capabilities of both the G and the Hrelease,” Schmidt said.

Galactic ‘fountain of youth’flows in Hubble Photo

NEW YORK, 22 May—A new photo from the HubbleSpace Telescope has revealed what scientists have called averitable galactic “fountain of youth,” one that would turnthe fictional pirate captain Jack Sparrow of the “Pirates of theCaribbean” films green with envy.

Journeying to the mythic Fountain of Youth is Sparrow’sgoal in Disney’s latest installment in the adventure filmfranchise, “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.”But the space fountain spotted by Hubble is no myth.

The new Hubble image shows the galaxy NGC 5775,which is located about 85 million light-years from Earth ina group of galaxies called the Virgo Cluster.

NGC 5775 is a spiral galaxy that is tilted away fromEarth in such a way that only its edge is visible.

This edge-on position of the galaxy has allowedastronomers to spot a vast halo of hot gas around NGC5775, but how the material actually got there is unclear, researchers said.

“Some astronomers think that hot gas from the disc isdriven into the halo by supernova explosions, which is thenreturned to the disc as it cools — like a massive galacticfountain,” according to a Hubble telescope image description.Because of the phenomenon, Hubble researchers dubbed ita “galactic fountain of youth” when they released the imagethis month.

There is also another oddity about the galaxy NGC 5775that has attracted attention from astronomers: a bridge ofhydrogen gas linking the galaxy with a galactic neighborcalled NGC 5774.

“Bummer,” said hisspacewalking partner,Andrew Feustel. Thespacewalk started outwell enough, with Finckeand Feustel topping off aleaky radiator line. Theysuccessfully addedammonia to the spacestation’s coolant system,

after rerouting jumper cables and openingvalves. One line leaks slightly, and theastronauts needed to recharge it.

Ammonia is extremely hazardous, andthe two did their best to avoid contaminatingtheir spacesuits while replenishing thesystem with about 5 pounds of thesubstance.

Fincke moved on preventivemaintenance on the large joint that rotatesthe space station’s solar wings on the leftside. He was removing covers when a boltgot away from him.

He caught it. Butanother bolt ended upfloating away, and awasher got stuckbetween the cover andan attachment.

Mission Controlworried the washermight get in the gearmechanisms of the jointand damage them.Fincke was advised touse “gentle backhandsweeping motions” toget the washer awayfrom the gears, and theastronaut replied hecould try to coax it out.

Health Tip: Don’t let the bedbugs biteBedbugs feed on human blood, leaving annoying itchy bites in their wake.

They may hide in places such as in and around the bed, in crevices behindchair and couch cushions, and in the folds of curtains. The US EnvironmentalProtection Agency offers these suggestions to help prevent bedbugs:

* If you’re accepting secondhand furniture, carefully inspect it for bedbugsbefore bringing it home.

* Encase box springs and mattresses in protective covers. Inspect the coversoften to look for holes.

* Clean up clutter in your home to give bedbugs fewer hiding spots.* When coming home from a trip, unpack your suitcase straight into the

washing machine. Also inspect luggage.* When in a hotel, keep suitcases on luggage racks rather than the floor.

Inspect the room for bedbugs, which are brown, oval-shaped, and 1/4 inchto 3/8 inches long.—Internet

Study sees link between psoriasis, obesity in kidsLOS ANGELES, 22

May—The prevalence ofpsoriasis — a chronic, inflammatory disease ofthe skin — is significantlyhigher among over-weight and obese kids, researchers have found.

The Kaiser Perma-nente study, publishedonline in the Journal ofPediatrics, also found thatteens with psoriasis(regardless of their bodyweight) have highercholesterol levels, putting

them at greater risk forheart disease.

“This study suggestsa link between obesity andpsoriasis in children,” thestudy’s lead authorCorinna Koebnick, re-search scientist at theKaiser Permanente Sou-thern California’s Depart-ment of Research & Eva-luation, said in a KaiserPermanente news release.

“But our studyfindings also suggest thatthe higher heart disease

risk for patients withpsoriasis starts inchildhood in the form ofhigher cholesterol levels.

We may need tomonitor youth withpsoriasis more closely forcardiovascular risk factors, especially if they areobese,” Koebnick added.

Using electronichealth records to study710,949 racially andethnically diverse children, the investi-gators foundobese children were

almost 40 percent morelikely to have psoriasisthan normal weightchildren. At even greaterrisk, extremely obesechildren were nearly 80percent more likely tohave psoriasis than normalweight children.

Moreover, it was fourtimes more likely forpsoriasis to be severe ormore widespread in obeseyouth than in normalweight children.

CANBERRA, 22 May—One of Australia’s largesthome and business electricity suppliers,TRUenergy, on Sunday warned that householdpower bills will double in six years after a carbonprice is introduced.

According to TRUenergy’s chief executiveRichard McIndoe, a carbon tax of between 22 and28 US dollars a tonne of emissions would notchange industry behavior, but would doubleelectricity bills for households over six years.

He said electricity prices has risen by 40 percentin the past three years.

“A carbon price will add another 330 US dollarsper household on top of that, so for a six-year

period you’re seeing an effective doubling ofelectricity prices per household with no tangiblebenefit,” McIndoe was quoted by ABC TV onSunday.

He also said uncertainty over what the long-term carbon price might be has stalled capitalinvestment in the industry and halted constructionof new power stations, which might lead to powershortage.

TOKYO, 22 May—A total of 250 tons of highlycontaminated radioactive water leaked into the seain earlier May from the No 3 reactor at the FukushimaDaiichi nuclear power plant, the Tokyo ElectricPower Co said Saturday.

The water, leaked from a pit near a seawaterintake of the reactor, contained an estimated 20terabecquerels of radioactive substances, TEPCOwas quoted by Koydo News as saying. The leak isestimated to have lasted for 41 hours from 2 am on10 May through 7 pm on the following day.

The estimated amount of radioactive substancesfrom the plant, crippled by the 11 March earthquakeand ensuing tsunami, is about 100 times the annualallowable limit for release outside the plant, saidTEPCO.

However, the leak just raised the concentrationof radioactive substances within the port of thepower plant, but the level outside the port did notchange significantly, said TEPCO.—Xinhua

LOS ANGELES, 22 May—The Japan nuclear power disaster caused by earthquakeand tsunami has prompted the United States to further evaluate the risk of usednuclear fuel, and a new plan is expected on the storage, processing and disposalof such nuclear waste, a US expert has said.

Thomas Light, Associate Economist and Professor at Pardee RAND GraduateSchool, told Xinhua in a recent interview that as highlighted by the disaster inJapan, there are natural disaster risks that could be amplified by the presence ofadditional spent fuel, tightly packed into pools.

However, he said that at this point, researchers, power companies andgovernment regulators are still trying to better understand these risks.

He said the US Department of Energy has convened a Blue Ribbon Commissionon America’s Nuclear Future, whose charter is to “conduct a comprehensivereview of policies for managing the back end of the nuclear fuel cycle.”—Xinhua

TOKYO, 22 May—Japanese Economics MinisterKaoru Yosano said on Sunday the governmentmay need to spend 10 trillion yen to 15 trillion yen($184 billion) for reconstruction from the devastatingearthquake that hit the country’s northeast in March.

The government may need to issue bonds tomeet the costs but should not do so without comingup with ways to pay for redemption, Yosano said, signaling that some form of tax hike would beinevitable. “I understand those who say we need toissue bonds for quake (reconstruction). But weshouldn’t borrow recklessly without thinking abouthow to pay the money back,” Yosano told atelevision programme.

“If we were to issue bonds for reconstruction,we need to decide in how many years we would paythe money back and how.

That’s important in maintaining market trust inJapan’s fiscal state,” he said.

Japan is reeling from the triple disaster of anearthquake, tsunami and prolonged nuclear crisis, with the government struggling to find ways to payfor the biggest reconstruction effort since theaftermath of World War Two.

Damage from the quake pushed Japan intorecession with the economy shrinking much morethan expected in the first quarter and set to contractagain in April-June as power shortages and supplychain disruptions hit factory output.

The government earlier this month passedthrough parliament a 4-trillion-yen first extra budgetto meet immediate disaster relief costs.
