What tips do you have when preparing for the NCLEX?

• Take a prep course (Kaplan, Hearst), do tons and tons of questions, do not get discouraged if you don't pass the first time

• Don’t be so focused with content, do it for the ones you are not confident about.

• Stay positive

• If money is tight use your resources.

• Understand why you're getting the practice questions correct / incorrect

• Lippincott's Q&A Review for NCLEX-RN is the most realistic book.

What was the biggest challenges about getting a job?

• Make contacts way before you're ready to start searching.

• Be proactive, write thank you notes.

• Pick up part time Nursing Assistant jobs/nurse Externships

• Have resume ready

• Come with questions to your interview

• Treat your preceptorship like it is your job interview.

• Build up your resume.

• Work as hard as you can

• Molloy has great resources. ex: Career Center

Biggest Challenges of being a new nurse?

• Doesn't matter how book smart you are, honestly.

• Being a night nurse, the constant exhaustion.

• Write small little notes

Page 30: MNSA END OF SEMESTER REPORT- SPRING 2016

• Being very overwhelmed

• Talk to other new nurses

• Don’t be afraid to ask questions

• Take it day by day, have a smile always.

• Everyday you learn something new.

• When you do ATI’s pay attention to the questions that ask who to take care of first.

How early on should I start doing questions?

• Always keep your mind going, constantly.

• The textbook questions help at the end of the day.

• The ATI books are great.

• They're putting lots of specialty questions on the NCLEX

• Do not over study, take breaks.

When doing NCLEX questions how did you organize yourself?

• Focusing on the subject rather than body systems

• RN entertainment, board game that helps with the rational.

• Start with content that you're unsure with.

How long did you wait to take your boards after taking the review course?

• 2-3 weeks

• You don't want to take time off.

• Keep the NCLEX date do not change it, its a goal.

What do you do about driving and snow?

• Rely on commuting with friends

• ALWAYS bring snacks so you don't sleep at the wheel

• When it snows you're still going to work. Pack a bag.

• Discounted parking fee at hospitals.

• Switch with friends, it is better to switch than call out when its snowing.

Guide Dog Foundation: Joan Lee

Page 31: MNSA END OF SEMESTER REPORT- SPRING 2016

• There are different types of blindness, total, partial.

• Visually impaired since the age of 18

• Before getting a dog, the visually impaired person must be cane trained

• A bystander can not touch the dog, the dogs are working

• Can the dog go to two the hospital with you?

• No, only if she visits a patient

• If she is the patient, the dog has to be walked etc.

• The insurance company does not pay for this.

• Cane training is done by a class

• Networking helps with the process of becoming cane trained

• To train a dog it costs 50,000

_____________________________________________________________________________ MNSA Meeting-Tuesday, April 5, y:

“How to Get Hired for Nurses”

Attended: Julia, Teresa, Emily, Jackie, Sam, Steph, Dr. Moore, Prof Mullarkey, Rachel Not attended: Phil, Katelyn (both at clinical, excused), Doctor Emeghebo (excused)

- Total Attended: 54

- First Speaker: Resumes

- Jamie Cloonan

• Nurse Recruitment & Retention, HR South Nassau Communities Hospital

- Resume

• DO: professional email, keep objective to the point, include certifications, if not already taken NCLEX include the possible range of when you will take the exam, use the words tailored to the job description.

• Put the capstone!! All the clinicals are not needed because it was mandated for school.

• What makes it to the top of the pile: fully complete, give them something that makes you stand out who you are.

- Cover letters

• Well appreciated, shows you took the initiative, makes you stand out from the crowd, make sure it is to the correct organization

Page 32: MNSA END OF SEMESTER REPORT- SPRING 2016

- Interview

• If cannot talk let the nurse recruiter know then let them know when to call them back, bring 5+ copies of resume, sign registration and all other certificates, be flexible for interviews!!! Be familiar with the companies and their achievements ex: magnet status.

- Second Speaker: The Interview

- Sue Preziosi

• Nurse Recruiter at Winthrop-University Hospital

• What to do for the interview

- Males: Suit and Tie

- Women: Dress or suit

- Prepare! Bring everything in a folder as in license, resume.

- The assistant at the front desk is the first part of your interview, she is the eyes and ears of the nurse recruiter.

- ****Know about organization**** Shows interest

- Popular question asked: What makes you unique? Tell me about a situation that was difficult with a patient, how did you deal with this? How can we create a better patient experience?

- Third Speaker: Background checks and References:

- Denise Baston

• HR Director for Mercy Medical Center

• Most of the time references are done through a third party. Asked for a professional supervisor. Reference will get a link that they will ask questions about how they think you will handle such situations. If you lied IP addresses will be tract and they will find out.

• Do not lie, even if its about old convictions. Public record will be noted.

• If you worked there for 2 days or 2 years its on your record. WRITE IT on your application/resume!

- Fourth Speaker: Orientation/First year of nursing

- Ellen Lorenz

• Northwell Health

• In the beginning you will feel uneasy. It’s ok!

• The little things mean a lot to the patients.

Page 33: MNSA END OF SEMESTER REPORT- SPRING 2016

• You are going to work with a whole team. You may not be friends with everyone but REMEMBER you have to work with them.

• Med Surg is a great foundation, some areas are very challenged as a new nurse. Unlike north well Winthrop doesn’t have a Critical care fellow ship. They have OR, ED.

• Orientation lasts from 4 months - 1 year

• As soon as you can is the prime time to take the NCLEX. The sooner the better

• For May graduates, you need to pass boards first before you can work. If its a new grad program wait until closer until graduation to apply, as for specialty apply as soon as you can. To be safe wait until you pass your boards.
