I was reading a newspaper a fewmonths agowhen I came across the story of a youngman who, in an effort toobtain the designation of Eagle Scout, reconstructed a footbridgeover a pond in Milford. His efforts were commendable, but whatparticularly caught my attention that day was his motivation forcompleting the project. Just a few months earlier, three of hisfriends had died after a fiery car wreck in Milford. Such a losscan break a person’s spirit, and for a moment, it bent the willof this young man. But he bounced back. He dedicated hiswork to his lost friends, and he rebuilt the bridge. In the process,he illustrated the meaning of character.

The young man, Brian Cimbak, is now a freshman at theUniversity of New Haven. He joins thousands of other studentswho are working to make a difference, both inside and outsidethe perimeter of this campus. They are students in the TagliatelaCollege of Engineering who this past spring built devices thatmay some day enable disabled workers to more easily completetheir tasks. They are student-athletes who spent time thissummer running a day camp for West Haven children. They arethe members of our soccer team, who dedicated a game to theirgoalie, James Hilaire, seriously injured in an earlier game andstruggling to recover in a Boston hospital. They went one stepfurther when they won the game for James, then bowed theirheads in a moment of silent tribute to their bent, but notbroken, goalie.

Character abounds here, and we at the University areduty-bound to help our students discover it within themselves.The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. summed up our mission well,I think, when he said: “The function of education is to teachone to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence pluscharacter – that is the goal of true education.” Your help,through the Annual Fund, through designated gifts, throughscholarships, enables us to continue to move forward withdetermination and purpose. What Motivates:Through my experience as an entrepreneur, my priorities haveshifted over the years. Initially, I was keenly focused on mybusinesses, but my attention has shifted toward my familyand making a difference through giving back to the community.This may be an outgrowth of accomplishing many of mycareer goals.

What Matters:I believe that education can solve many of the social problemsthat we have to deal with these days.

Why He Helps:Because of my beliefs, I tend to be more philanthropic towardeducational institutions.The University of New Haven, my almamater, receives the lion’s share of my family’s philanthropy.I’ve been associated with UNH for more than 25 years. In recentyears, I have seen tremendous growth and many exciting campusimprovements.This creates stimulation for fundraising and, aschair of the Board of Governors, building the endowmentis one of the most important tasks I can help to accomplish.

What Motivates:Like many people, I seek approval, first and foremost, from myparents—who were my guiding force during my early years—then later from my employers. I never wanted anyone to have toask me twice to carry out a command. I also have always felt thatif I was investing my energy into something, I should do it well,with intensity and purpose. I developed a desire to follow fourprecepts in all I do: honesty, energy, economy, system.

What Matters:Knowing that others I come into contact with will feel thatthe following precepts define me as a human being:

• Honesty: Trust is earned through straightforward dealings.

• Energy:Approach your life work with energy.Enthusiasm and commitment are infectious.

• Economy: Develop your project for the fewest possible dollars.Remember, an engineer is someone who can make somethingfor $1 that anybody else can make for $5.

• System: Conduct yourself and your projects systematically.You inspire confidence in others when you plan and organize.

Why He Helps:My high school guidance counselor did not have glowing prospectsfor me.Academically, I was quite average, having never been giftedas a test taker. I was motivated more by what I could accomplishwith my brain and hands, rather than brain alone. I had two greatparents who sacrificed in order to see their three children obtainan education.

I realize not everyone has been as fortunate as I have been,having such parental support. Therefore, I called Sister Pat (Rooney,former development director) at UNH in the early `90`s, and askedwhat I could do to sponsor a scholarship for students with need whohad a "can do" attitude and whose interests were in engineering.

What Motivates:There were many elements in my childhood that causedme to feel that, as a woman, I could reach for the starsand work toward my true potential. What Matters:To be authentic to myself and, following that, to be thebest parent, wife and professional I can possibly be. It isalso critical to me to feel as if I am making a contributionto the community around me and doing my part to helpothers reach their goals and dreams.

Why He Helps:I would not have been able to receive a degree fromUNH and achieve what I have without the helpand support of alumni.Therefore, it is my duty todo the same for others. What Motivates:One of the best decisions I made earlier in my life was to join the MarineCorps.The Marine Corps gave me courage, pride and great friends tothis day. Once discharged, I enrolled at New Haven College. I went ontoWesleyan and Florida State University, and the teaching at NewHaven College was the very best of all. I became a clinical psychologistand managed two large child psychology departments in Connecticut.After early retirement, I came back to the University of New Haven asa faculty member, thanks to [former Lee College dean] Tom Johnson.

What Matters:My priorities in life are to love and support my family. I also believeI have an obligation to my students and the University to bring outthe best in my students. I see teaching as twofold: class lecturing,and career support and mentoring. I love teaching my students.

Why He Helps:UNH gave me a firm foundation of education and critical thinking.I am grateful to many people at the University, and my donationsare a way of giving back for all I was given.

Hope for the future:While, as a junior, I’m dead center at thatproverbial fork in the road, right now I am leaning towards working withmusic and sound in movies, television, and theatre. I am also consideringworking in production and management at a radio station.

Why he is grateful: There are so many of us who simply would notbe attending UNH if it weren’t for the scholarships that we receive.Also, donations help to make UNH not only more aesthetically pleasing,but more functional and useful. The University’s smart classrooms, whichallow students to learn with all of their senses, campus renovations, suchas in Bartels Hall, the campus center, which allow for more communityusage and studying space, and other important upgrades spotlight howdonations help students and help elevate the value of a UNH degree.

Why she is grateful: Donations have positively impacted theeducation, health, and overall college experience of UNH studentsthrough the generations. Scholarships lessen the burden put onboth students and their parents. Being awarded a scholarshiphelps students graduate without having to worry about beingin serious debt and makes the transition to the working worlda little bit easier. Speaking on behalf of myself, friends and parents,even the smallest scholarship is appreciated more than anyonecould know! In addition, whether funds go toward the BeckermanRecreation Center, a place to go to continue a healthy lifestyle,or newly renovated laboratories, students are truly grateful thatalumni and friends of UNH are enhancing their college experiences.

Involvement: President, The National Society of Minorities inHospitality. I took on the role as president to better my leadershipand management skills. The organization allows students across thecountry to come together to learn the value of bringing a diverseworkforce into the hospitality industry.We participate in workshops heldby industry professionals and learn proper etiquette and professionalismfor our future careers, and we represent the University of New Haven.Importantly, we as a chapter participate in various community serviceactivities to show our thanks.

Plans for the future: From my internship experiences, I know I wouldenjoy working in the event planning area of the hospitality industry. I alsohope to one day plan weddings. I have a true passion for the hospitalityindustry and I believe it offers a variety of great opportunities. I can onlyhope that in my future the passion only grows greater.
