JUMP START YOUR EMERGENCY FUNDWhat if you needed $400 tomorrow to cover a car repair, emergency room visit or other unexpected expense? If you’re like 40% of Americans, you’d have to use a credit card or borrow money to cover it.

Having money set aside for the unexpected is essential to your long-term financial health. Here are three easy ways to jump start an emergency fund:

1. Open a savings account. Use your existing Columbus Metro primary share, or open a secondary share specifically for this purpose. You can have up to five secondary shares on your account and create custom names like “Emergency Savings” or “Rainy Day Fund”. That makes it easy to keep emergency savings separate from other money you might be putting aside.

2. Set up automatic savings. Once you have a designated savings account, you can set up automatic transfers from your checking account every payday or on the first of the month. That way, you won’t forget to make the transfer or accidentally spend funds you wanted to save.

3. Make a promise. Saving money can be exciting at first. After a while, it’s easy to lose momentum or think about spending your emergency fund on something fun. Instead, go to www.americasaves.org and take the America Saves pledge. They’ll send you reminders to save along with tips and tricks to help you succeed.

You can’t prevent the unexpected, but you can be prepared. Start your emergency fund today!

CLARA HAZLETT RETIRESClara Hazlett, a longtime member of the Columbus Metro FCU board of directors, retired effective June 30.

Mrs. Hazlett has been a credit union member for over 58 years and was first elected to the board of directors in 1992. She served 19 years as the board’s second vice chair.

We appreciate Mrs. Hazlett’s long and distinguished service to the credit union and its members. Although she is no longer an active member of the board, she has been awarded the title of board member emeritus and will remain involved on a limited basis.

International Credit Union Day Is October 17On October 17, credit union members around the world will celebrate International Credit Union Day.

There are 200+ million credit union members worldwide – more than 118 million in the U.S. alone – and Columbus Metro joins them in celebration of the not-for-profit cooperative spirit that all credit unions share.

This cooperative spirit has led to life-changing opportunities for people all over the world who’ve wanted to start a small business, own a home or continue their education but were denied access to other financial institutions. In many parts of the world, people’s first taste of democracy is through their credit union, where “one member, one vote” is the governing structure.

At its most basic level, a credit union is people pooling their money to provide each other with affordable loans – it is literally people helping people. This is why Columbus Metro celebrates ICU Day. Because credit unions empower people, wherever they are in the world or life, to take control of their financial future.

CONNECT WITH CONFIDENCEHelpful Hints to Keep You Cyber Safe

The line between our online and offline lives is indistinguishable. In these tech-fueled times, our homes, social lives, schools and workplaces and even our national security are impacted by the internet.

October is National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, and this year’s theme is Own IT. Secure IT. Protect IT. Make sure that you and your family are being cyber smart with these tips:

Own IT • Only use sites that begin with https:// when shopping or banking online. • Understand the personal information you knowingly (or unknowingly) put on social media. • Don’t respond or click on links from people or organizations you don’t recognize. • Never share your personal information if you’re unsure who’s asking

Secure IT • Apply multifactor authentication to your accounts ASAP. • Always lock your personal or work laptop or mobile device when unattended in a public place. • Use the longest password possible and be creative. • Check your app permissions frequently.

Protect IT • Look for the “green lock” icon when online, it signifies a secure connection. • Use your personal hotspot in public places; it’s more secure than free Wi-Fi. • Make sure you’re using the latest security software, web browser and operating system. • Secure your Wi-Fi network and digital devices by changing the factory set password and username.

As a reminder, you should NEVER share your MetroWeb ID and password with anyone, and Columbus Metro will never ask you for it.

Fraudsters often ask for login information so they can deposit a check or checks to the victim’s account. They might say the money is free, a loan or part of a business proposition. While the check is being processed, the fraudster convinces the victim to send them all or part of the money. When the check is returned as fraudulent (which can take several days or weeks), the victim is on the hook for the funds.

If you have given someone access to MetroWeb, call 614.239.0210 or 800.986.3876 to speak to a member services representative so that they can help protect your

information.
