What is EVDO and HSDPA
he EVDO standard was developed in 1999 by Qualcomms the next step in the evolution of CDMA (Code-Division
Multiple Access) technology, attempting to hit a targetwireless data transfer rate of 2 Mbps (megabits per econd). It's been widely adopted overseas, and is noweing implemented in the United States by a few major
ommunications companies. EVDO is a wirelessroadband technology that ordinarily offers data transfer peeds between 300 Kbps (kilobits per second) and 512bps. You can get up to a 2-Mbps (megabits per second)ansfer rate in areas with a strong signal and lowterference.

ote: Even with an optimal connection, EVDO hasn'taught up to DSL (digital subscriber line) yet, which ispproximately 2.4 Mbps (megabits per second). However,VDO rates are ordinarily 10 times faster than traditionalal-up modem connections.
What is HSDPA?
SDPA is based on the GSM (Global System for Mobileommunications) standard that is used throughout the
world for cellular communications. HSDPA wirelessroadband technology provides a higher quality signal thanVDO but is not as widely deployed. EVDO connectionoftware is also slightly easier to configure.
ote: Both wireless broadband standards carry data over he same cell towers used for voice communications, on itswn radio frequency to avoid crossover.
ou're probably quite familiar with Wi-Fi (wireless fidelity)echnology and are wondering how it differs from EVDO or SDPA. The main differences are:
• EVDO and HSDPA don't require an internet hotspot.
• Standard Wi-Fi has a much shorter range, generally 250 to 300 feet. EVDO and HSDPA -- wireless broadband connections -- have the same range as a cell phone signal.

Of the relatively few major players in the wirelessroadband game, Verizon uses EVDO technology andingular uses HSDPA technology. Each company has a
airly wide coverage area and similar rate plans, so theecision comes down to which provider covers your area
with mobile internet access:
• Verizon: Offers Wireless BroadbandAccess in over 180U.S. metropolitan areas.
• Cingular: Offers BroadbandConnect service in most major U.S. metropolitan areas and over 170 countries.
ote: As of this writing, both providers offer unlimited dataans ranging in cost from $60 to $80 per month.

• Maximize productivity by accessing information and applications remotely at a much higher data transfer rate than with a dial-up modem.
• Increase security of email, contacts, and other sensitive
information.
• Stay in touch and share data anywhere without the need for a wireless hotspot.
• Reduce the number of help desk calls from remote
employees who are unable to make a connection to the
internet using conventional methods.
• Enable a single, secure connection for all wireless communications.
o matter what industry you're in, from construction to
onsulting, your business can benefit from having the
formation you need, when and where you need it. Here
re some real-world examples:
• With EVDO or HSPDA technology, your sales
executives can access vital information from the
customer's site without the hassles of trying to connect
to their network.
• Your construction foreman can order the building
materials his crew needs from the job site and then
send someone to pick up the order at the store, saving
significant time on the project.
he practical applications of EVDO and HSDPA wireless
roadband are as varied as the businesses that implement

Mobile internet access with EVDO and HSDPA - benefits of wireless broadband - how to guides - HP Small and Medium Business
When deciding whether to implement any mobile internet
ccess solution, consider the security issues involved in
ccessing sensitive business data remotely. A wireless
roadband connection is more secure than a Wi-Fi hotspot,
which is essentially a wide-open public access point. For
his reason, many businesses forbid access to corporate
PN (virtual private network) and other resources via
ublic Wi-Fi hotspots.
lternatively, wireless broadband has built-in 128-bit
ncryption, so the risk of data interception, theft, andmodification is significantly reduced. This is the same level
f encryption used throughout the internet, and for
overnmental, banking, and military applications. Your data
ouldn't be much more secure without being completely
accessible.

The computer and network connection
he first thing you need is a notebook with a WWAN
wireless wide area network) NIC (network interface card).
his card is similar to the wireless network card you
robably already have, but it's made to connect to wireless
roadband networks. The card also contains the encryption
outines that secure your data.
you're in the market for a new notebook, you can go one
tep further and get one with embedded, or integrated,
WWAN technology. Having the wireless broadband WWAN
echnology integrated into the notebook offers a great
onvenience -- it's always there, so there's no chance of
misplacing a small external card. Integrated WWANechnology is also safer than carrying your notebook PC
with the external WWAN card attached, which is prone to
amage in transit.
ote: You'll find a sampling of HP products with integrated
WWAN technology in the "Production information" section
f this guide.
nsure secure connections
lthough wireless broadband connections are encrypted,
ou need to ensure that your internal network is secure, yetccessible. Securing and configuring your network is
utside the scope of this guide; however, at a minimum,
ou should set up a firewall that restricts outside access to
nauthorized users. Configure the firewall to allow access
o employees via remote wireless broadband connections.

One of the big conveniences of EVDO and HSDPA
wireless broadband access is secure remote printing,
which enables you to create documents and print them to
our office printer from your notebook PC. This
onvenience also requires some configuration and the right
quipment. You need a networked printer or print server
onfigured to accept print jobs from your notebook PC.
The software
Wireless broadband-enabled computers use a manager ool to activate wireless broadband service and make the
ctual connection to the internet. For example, on an HP
otebook, launch the VZAccess Manager software from
he start menu and follow the prompts to activate and get
onnected.
the software came installed on your computer, you're set
o go. Otherwise, you can download the software from the
ewlett Packard Technical Support website.
ip: To use a mobile printer, you should download and
stall the HP Mobile Print Driver for Windows. The driver is
vailable on the HP website.

Select a computer
et's start off with the most crucial piece of the puzzle -- the
mobile computer. HP offers three styles of mobile
omputers: business notebooks, tablet PCs, and
andhelds.
usiness notebook computers
hese laptops are the workhorses of mobile computing.
hey give you all the computing power you're used to in a
esktop computer, only smaller and more compact. Youan select from notebooks designed to be as light as
ossible for frequent travelers, mid-range models that
alance weight with features, and mobile powerhouses
esigned to replace your desktop. Each category has
everal models available, so you're sure to find the right
ombination of features for your business.
ote: Several HP notebooks including the nc6320 and the
c6400 now come with integrated WWAN technology built
.
ablet PCs
ablet PCs are ideal for students, writers, or anyone who
oes a lot of their work longhand. They combine the
onvenience of a notebook computer with the simplicity of
d- fashioned paper and pen. They also come with special
oftware that makes it easy to convert your handwritten
otes to text files, automatically.
ote: A Tablet PC requires an external WWAN card.

When you don't need the computing power of a full PC,
nd you want something you can toss in your briefcase
nd go, a handheld device is for you. Using an HP iPAQ,
or example, you can check your email, look something up
nline, or even take digital photos and send them to your
iends. HP iPAQs are also designed to integrate with the
roductivity software on your desktop PC, so checking your
alendar or adding to your task list has never been easier.
ote: Cingular provides wireless broadband service -- in
his case, HSDPA -- for HP iPAQs.
Select printing options
emote printing might not be something you thought you
eeded, but once you have it, you'll wonder how you ever
d business without it.
Mobile printers
On a business trip, you might find yourself on the go all day
with a pile of paperwork to do when you get back to your
otel. Make it easier on yourself with a mobile printer.
onnect the printer in your hotel room with Wi-Fi access,nd then print to it from your notebook computer anytime,
nywhere throughout the day. Your printouts will be waiting
or you when you get back to the hotel room, ready to sign
nd move on.
Wireless print servers
he wireless print server is one step better than a mobile
rinter. It's a full-featured office printer that's connected
wirelessly to the internet. It runs its own mini-web server,
o you can access all of its advanced features from your
wireless broadband-enabled computer. Print, collate, andtaple the handouts for your morning meeting while you
de the train into the office. They'll be there waiting for you,
eeing you up to enjoy your morning cup of coffee and
heck your email before the meeting.
ow that you're up to speed on EVDO and HSDPA
wireless broadband standards, and what they can do to
treamline your business and make you more productive
n the road -- all you have to do is decide how you want to
mplement the technology in your business. You need to
ck a wireless provider, and then decide between a
otebook, tablet, or handheld PC. If the possibilities of emote printing seem like finding that mythical 25th hour in
he day, look into a mobile printer or a wireless print server.
ip: For help selecting products with integrated EVDO
echnology, visit the HP Mobility solutions evaluation center
wireless services web page.
