    DAILY LESSON PLAN

    Instructional Group Size: 28 (5th

    Grade)

    Subject/Activity: Mathematics/Measurement

    ______________________________________________________________________________Essential Question(s): What units are utilized within the Customary Measurement System?

    CCGPS StandardMCC5.MD.1 Convert among different-sized measurement units within a

    given system and use these conversions in solving multi-step, real world problems.

    Objectives:

    Students will be able to convert appropriate units of weight within the customary system. In

    order to demonstrate mastery, students will complete the performance tasks with 75% accuracy.

    Procedures

    IntroductionMini Lesson: As students enter the classroom, they will be given an index card that contains

    either a customary measurement problem or an answer. Once students have settled into their

    seats, the teacher will (TTW) say, Today, we will be completing a variety of tasks which willrequire each of you to apply your computation and reasoning skills we have been practicing

    throughout this unit. To warm up, you will need to communicate with your classmates in order

    to find the match that completes the pair resulting in both a question and answer.

    Implementation

    After completing the mini lesson, TTW give instructions for the station activities to becompleted. TTW say, I have already divided the class into working groups. Together, you are

    to complete each station activity. You will have about 15 minutes for each task. The teacher

    will then read aloud the following instructions for each station:

    Station 1: I HaveWho Has (weight)

    1) Distribute the cards evenly between all team members.2) The team leader will read aloud the First card marked, Start Here.3) The group will work together to convert the units of weight for each problem and

    glue down the questions in order on chart paper.

    Station 2: Fill My Bucket (capacity)

    1) Give each student a Fill My Bucket gallon sheet.2) Classify the bucket cards: cups, pints, quarts3) Students will take turns drawing cards from the Capacity Cards pile in an effort to

    be the first to fill the bucket (one gallon) without spilling over.

    4)

    When time is up, students are to record the total capacity on their card. For example,one student might have 2 quarts and 2 cups when time runs out.5) The teacher will evaluate Fill My Bucket gallon sheet during the teacher-student

    conference.

    This is the best apps for measurement conversion. Every question is given certain time

    frame (default is 30 sec) for children to answer. The correct answer will add 50 points

    while wrong answer will minus 50 points. Every problem comes with explanation of the

    solution

    Station 3: Length Task Cards1) Give each student a Task Card Recording Sheet.2) Students will work together to complete AT LEAST 8 of the 12 task cards and fill in

    answers/responses on the recording sheet.3) Mrs. Gough will evaluate during the teacher-student conference.

    Station 4: Whats Being Measured

    1) Give each student a Whats Being Measured tree map and Measurement Phrasesbox sheet.

    2) As a group, read each example carefully and discuss which unit of customarymeasurement (weight, length, or capacity) does the phrase refer to.

    3) Glue the phrase under the correct unit.4) Mrs. Gough will evaluate progress during the student-teacher conference.

    While students are working independently, the teacher will call one group at a time to conference

    and evaluated their station performances.

    Checking for Understanding: The teacher will check for understanding by monitoring and

    assisting students throughout station activities.

    Evaluation: The teacher will evaluate that the students were able to complete the customary

    pair measurement problem during the mini lesson. In addition, the teacher will evaluate allstations above to make sure the students mastered each with at least 75% accuracy.

    Closure: TTW say, Over the last week, we have been investigating and learning about thecustomary system of measurement. We have classified and converted customary measurementunits that are specific to length, weight, and capacity. Tomorrow, you will complete the unit

    summative assessment followed by the unit culminating project the next day. As you exit the

    class, I want you to write one question you still have about the customary measurement systemOR one comment as to what have enjoyed the most about this unit (ticker-out-the-door).
