By Jordan ParkerIn their quest to provide open space through down-town Halifax's Queen Marque, developers have un ea r the d imp or tant archaeological artifacts.

The 75,000-square foot en-deavour, under the control of Waterfront Development Inc., will provide access to the water's edge in the area.

Featuring a permeable ground level, European-style

plaza and public squares at George and Prince streets, it is set to be a structure like no other in the area. However, great care is now being paid to the artifacts being uncovered.

“It was recognized from the outset that the Queen’s Marque District played an important role in the history of Halifax, from its founding through to the present day. As such, it was no surprise that significant archaeological artifacts and features would be encountered during ex-cavation,”Bruce Stewart, president and senior tech-nical advisor of CRM Group Ltd. said in an email.

“The Armour Group en-gaged Cultural Resource Management (CRM) Group, a Halifax-based archaeological consulting firm, to undertake a thorough background study on the development hist-ory of the Queen’s Marque District. Since construction started on site, CRM Group has been actively involved in monitoring all excava-tion in order to identify and document archaeological resources as they were en-countered.”

So far, artifacts include 19th to early 20th century domestic pieces that would have passed through the port, as well as military items, like cannonballs.

“If anything was surpris-ing, it was the relatively low percentage of artifacts that could be attributed to the eighteenth century,” he said.

“Taken as a total assem-blage, artifacts and features identified within the Queen’s Marque District tell the story of the Halifax waterfront – military activities relating to the early development of the town site, commercial ventures associated with trans-Atlantic trade and the North Atlantic fishery.”

He said CRM has been working closely with The Armour Group, local con-struction companies and the Nova Scotia government to ensure proper care is taken with the artifacts.

“Once a rchaeolog ica l

features were documented, the structural remains were removed to facilitate re-development of the Queen’s Marque District.

The artifacts collected as a result of archaeological ex-cavation (mitigation) of the various features and those collected during monitoring are being retained for pro-cessing and interpretation,” he said.

“A l l a r t i fac t s w i l l be turned over to the Special Places Program for long term curation. It is anticipated that specific artifacts will be loaned to The Armour Group for incorporation into the completed development.”

The Armour Group said the discovery of artifacts has not caused delays in

construction. In an email, they said one difficulty was getting the cofferdam con-struction just right.

“Queen's Ma rque is a challenging and unique con-struction project. The lower parking level has a finished floor level that is 9.5 ft. below sea level and our excavation is as much as 15 ft. below sea level,” they said in an email.

“Meticulous planning and a dedicated construction team allowed us to overcome this building challenge to complete the cofferdam suc-cessfully.”

This project represents a $200 million private invest-ment, and the group hopes to finish sometime in 2019.

It should go without saying that f lying a Confederate flag from a jobsite isn’t the smartest public relations move.

However, the contentious symbol recently generated numerous headlines when a temporary worker f lew the flag from the back of his pickup truck at a jobsite in Hamilton, Ont.

According to a story by the CBC, the temp worker’s reasoning for flying the flag was for “giggles” and if it angered people, “so be it.”

In the CBC article, which has been shared more than 3,000 times on social media, the reporter also notes a shouting match between the flag bearer and a passer-by.

Sure, the project manage-m e n t c o m p a n y t h a t temporarily hired the man condemned his actions and noted there’s no racism al-lowed on the site.

Yet, the company’s re-buttal to the flag incident is at the bottom of the story, easily out of grasp of the average attention span.

Furthermore, the man and his f lag became the face of the company in the media and on site, for how-

ever long he was able to fly the flag.

Although he was fired from his temporary pos-it ion, h i s u n for t u nate legacy is still alive online.

If you Google the com-pany’s name, the man’s stunt now accounts for the top three results under the news tab, as well as the top news result for a “Hamilton construction” search.

On the company’s Fa-cebook page, w here it denounced “the actions of the rogue temporary em-ployee,” the post received more than 100 comments — both for and against the man’s dismissal.

Those online comments likely translated into a digit-al reach of a few thousand people.

So, the stunt, which was admittedly carried out for giggles, cost the company time, added stress and pos-sibly money.

This will also become a reminder, for both the com-pany and the rogue, now job-seeking flag bearer, that “online” is forever.

In a day and age where photos and video may be published online instan-taneously, it’s probably a

best practice to avoid such circumstances before they arise.

T he project ma nage-ment company handled the fallout from the f lag respectfully and profes-sionally.

Yet, the entire incident could have been avoided if his behav ior was no-ticed and stopped before it caught the attention of both social and traditional media.

In Canada, it is our Con-stitutional right to practice freedom of thought and ex-pression, but that doesn’t necessarily extend to the workplace, particularly when it may have a negative impact on an employer’s bottom line.

A new invention from a Quebec-based entrepre-neur is allowing compact excavators to increase their material handling capacity.

Blade Buddy, created by Danny Karch, is a new at-tachment that mounts on a 5 to 6.5 ft. levelling blade of an excavator, without the use of auxiliary hydraulics.

“It’s going to allow the in-dustry to do a lot more with a single machine,” Karch said.

“While operators were limited to the volume their bucket would carry in the hydraulic arm, now they can manipulate a lot more material. They don’t have to bring two machines to many of the jobsites.”

A bucket on steriodsCalled a “skid steer bucket

on steroids” by the company, the Blade Buddy has a cen-tre-mounted cradle system that allows it to be lifted and displaced with a full load of material.

Equipped with twin pos-ition pins, the unit may transform from discharge to carry in a few seconds. This allows the contents to be scooped, dumped, spread or loaded.

“If they need to load ma-terial and put it in a truck,

they would shift the pins to a carry position. Then, they lift the whole unit full of ma-terial and dump it where it’s needed,” Karch said.

Load bracketsThe attachment is also

equipped with load support brackets, which are remov-able mounted extensions positioned on both sides of the front of the unit.

The brackets allow the ex-cavator to carry long objects, like logs or beams, according to Karch.

Easy to mountKarsh notes an additional

feature of the attachment is how easily it is mounted or dismounted from the ma-chine.

“You use it when you need it. When you don’t need it, you simply lower your lever and back away, nobody has to get out of the machine,” he said.

“The only time the operator leaves the machine is to go from dump to carry position.”

The Blade Buddy is the first attachment created by Karch, who previously worked as a forestry environmental spe-cialist.

T h e a t t a c h m e n t w a s developed to reduce the

number of required trips excavator operators made while moving material.

“They were going back and forth 20 times. I thought there must be a better way to do that,” Karch said.

He began working on the prototype a year ago and finished field testing in the spring. The product was launched in the North Amer-ican market in August.

New usesInitial field testing also

discovered new uses for the Blade Buddy. With a 40-in.

depth, the attachment al-lowed landscapers to move full pallets.

“A lot of landscapers were able to pick up pallets of stone or sod. They thought that was very practical,” Karch said. “Since it’s a new product on the market, the operators are getting used to how to ma-nipulate it.”

The Blade Buddy, which is patent pending, is currently available in 60 in. and 72 in. lengths.

A 38-in. model for micro excavators will be available in early 2018.

In 1977, Caterpillar’s production lines rolled out 10 pilot models of the world’s largest, most powerful dozer, which would change the face of the equipment market.

The Cat D10 dozer’s radically different undercarriage, design, high weight and horsepower answered the call from large mining and big heavy construction oper-ations for a more powerful dozer. This September, the Cat D10 celebrated its 40th anniversary.

“We bucked conventional wisdom with the D10 and tinkered with a centerpiece that was a part of the Caterpillar product line since the company was formed in 1925,” said George Alexander, a retired Caterpillar engineer who worked on the D10 research team and is one of four individuals named on the patent for Caterpillar’s elevated sprocket design.

Offering 50 per cent higher productivity than Caterpillar’s largest dozer of that era, the D10 weighed more than 190,000 lbs. and measured 15 ft. tall, 12 ft. wide and slightly more than 31 ft. long. Power was supplied by the 700 hp D348, V12 diesel engine.

Dozer demand A changing industry in the late 1960s and

early 1970s stretched the D9, the D10’s pre-decessor, to its productivity limits. The mining industry led the charge for a dozer with more and more horsepower.

“The D9 dozer was the best track-type tractor of the day,” Alexander said. “It worked great for dirt operations, but interstate and heavy rock applications were hard on the solid bottom tracks that were a part of all dozer designs of that era.”

To address market need, Caterpillar re-cruited a team of researchers and engineers to develop a new, more powerful dozer, the D10.

“The development and product intro-duction involved every discipline of the company. It was highly successful because of the total team effort. The challenge of beating the competition in our core product was a tremendous incentive,” recalled Ron Krolak, retired track-type tractor chief engineer.

The D10 research team established a set of design goals for the new dozer: high productivity; modular design; simplified maintenance; operator efficiency; and trans-portability. It quickly became evident that a new track design and improved undercar-riage were needed to meet the production and durability goals for the new dozer.

Birth of the elevated sprocketIn 1970, a test bed was built for the new

track. Engineers started by flipping the final drive for a D9G upside down.

“We worked on undercarriage geometry a lot, and within six months we had it oper-ational,” Alexander said.

The new and resilient track, with elevated sprocket design, was tested thoroughly in multiple applications to verify its durability. Results showed significant potential for improving undercarriage durability for extreme tasks.

Following two years of testing, Cat filed the first elevated sprocket patent application and began building the first two D10 test models in August of 1973.

“Our team generated 93 patents involving all systems of the concept,” Krolak said.

By separating the drive sprockets from the track roller frame and elevating them above the tracks, more track remained on the ground for improved traction. The ele-vated sprocket design was also better able to absorb ground shocks for longer life and greater operator comfort.

While initial testing proved the value of the resilient undercarriage with elevat-ed sprocket design, there were still some skeptics.

“It didn’t look like any traditional Cat dozer,” Alexander said. “The entire dozer was different in almost every way, except for the engine.”

The new undercarriage design required mounting the transmission behind the en-gine to provide for the only track-type tractor final drive system with a common centerline between the steering clutches and brakes. It also allowed engineers to move both the dozer blade and ripper closer to the tractor, providing a concentrated centre of gravity and improving the balance of the machine.

Marketplace approval The pilot D10 dozers built in 1977 were

embraced by Caterpillar customers. Their ripping and pushing capabilities made a significant impact on the mining industry, as studies showed the cost per yard to move material using the D10 was comparable to that of larger draglines. The resilient under-carriage with elevated sprocket conformed to the ground better than solid tracks, help-ing to improve machine pushing power and undercarriage life and enhancing operator comfort.

The elevated sprocket track concept has been expanded to today’s Cat D6N and D6T medium dozers and the D8T, D9T and D11T large dozer models, as well as the current D10T2 model.

“After I retired in the 1990s, I gave my presentation on the development of the elevated sprocket design, and a person afterwards said to me, ‘Wherever you go, you will see the results of your work’,” re-called Alexander.

“He was right. No matter where I travelled in the world, I saw dozers with the elevated sprocket design.”

Celebrating Cat’s elevated sprocket that changed the dozer market

Link-Belt is introducing its new 145 X4 minimum sw ing excavator to the North American market.

T h e n e w m a c h i n e feat u res a n elec t ron ic-a l l y- c ont rol le d 10 2 hp Isuzu engine that meets EPA Final Tier 4 require-ments, without the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF).

“The 145 X4 delivers up to three per cent faster cycle times than its predecessor,” said Adam Woods, Link-Belt product manager.

To ensure that hydraulic f low gets delivered pre-cisely when and where it’s needed, the excavator is equipped with two electric-ally-controlled Kawasaki variable-displacement a x ial-piston pumps and one Kawasaki gear pump.

“The end result is more s m o o t h n e s s , m a n e u -verabilit y and precision when digging, dumping or swinging,” Woods said.

T he 145 X4 is eas y to t r a n s p o r t a n d v e r s a -t i le enough to take on a variet y of tasks, such as water and sewer pipeline construction, residential construction, highway and street construction, excav-at ion work a nd load ing

trucks. A dozer blade can be added to tack le more work.

Fuel ef f icienc y is a lso improved. The 145 X4 de-l ivers up to si x per cent better fuel economy than prev ious models. It also features a 45 litre DEF tank. As well, the 145 X4 boasts a one per cent increase in lifting capacity.

In the cab, a large, auto-motive-grade high-back suspended seat offers lum-bar support, with tilt ing a nd heat opt ion s. A r m rests move proportionally w ith the console, which means the distance and angle bet ween joyst icks and operator remains the same, no matter how the seat is adjusted.

A large, 7-in. LCD colour monitor allows the oper-ator to easily navigate a full menu of controls to take full command of the ex-cavator and attachments. New features include fuel consumption display, ma-chine info and time setting.

T h e s t a n d a r d r e a r-view camera is accessible through the monitor, dis-playing a panoramic view of the worksite from the rear of the machine, with sight guidelines that can

be turned on or off by the operator.

For maximum visibility, the Wide Angle Visual En-hancement System (WAVES) can be added, which pro-vides a seamless 230-degree view with no blindspots.

“WAVES is an exclusive, award-winning feature for Link-Belt X4 excavators,” Woods said. “The system is easy to use and includes three closed-circuit, high resolution cameras.”

Other notable new cab features include dual-halo-gen cab lights with optional LED lighting; a cup holder and storage areas for cell phones and other small items; newly designed joy-sticks with easy-to-hold grip and radio mute buttons; and MP3 audio input.

RemoteCARE GPS-en-abled telematics system allows 24-7 remote mon-itoring and security. The system tracks and records routine and major service intervals, as well as ma-chine health. It also lets you be more proactive if potential failure conditions arise; f lashing diagnostic codes on the monitor alert the operator to potential trouble and an email alert is automatically sent.

By Tony KryzanowskiWhile some people prefer as little complexity in their life as possible, others enjoy plenty of variety. Alberta logger, Darcy Coleman, falls into the second category in both his business life and in his equipment fleet.

In addition to logging primarily for West Fraser Timber, supplying both their Sundre Forest Products sawmill in Sundre, Alberta with sawlogs and their laminated veneer lumber (LVL) plant near Strachan with peeler logs, Coleman also operates a small sawmill, farms 400 acres, and has 50 head of Black Angus cattle.

Darcy owns Coleman Forest Products with his wife, Stephanie. The company is headquartered near Sundre. In total, the company harvests about 200,000 cubic metres of softwood annually in what Coleman calls “moderate to difficult” terrain.

They have four feller bunchers in their fleet, which includes a Komatsu 450 tilter, a Tigercat 870 tilter, a flat bottomed John Deere 953K, and a flat bottomed Valmet 445 EX. Their skidders consist of a Tigercat 630D, two John

Deere 748 GIII’s, and one John Deere 848H. Their proces-sor carriers are a John Deere 2054, a Hitachi 200 Forester, a Hitachi 210 Forester, two John Deere 2154D units, and a Tigercat H855C carrier. All are equipped with Waratah 622B processing heads.

“Our first processor that we bought in 2000 was a Waratah and we’ve had good success with that brand,” said Cole-man. “It’s suited to our type of timber. They came out with the 622B in 2003, and although they’ve had some software changes over the years, the basic machine is still the same. We can take a knife arm off a 2003 model and still put it on a 2017 model.”

Their fleet includes a Caterpillar 527 tracked skidder with a swing grapple to retrieve logs in steeper and softer ground, and they also own a Caterpillar 575 forwarder.

“In certain circumstances, the forwarder is a benefit, especially in roadside areas where we don’t have enough room to deck all the wood,” Coleman said. “We’ll process at the stump and then use the forwarder to transport the wood to roadside, which allows us to build higher decks. The forwarder also comes in handy where there are long distance hauls between fallen timber in the block and road-side, because by processing at the stump, the forwarder is able to deliver finished product to roadside.”

Speaking about the variety of equipment brands in his fleet, Coleman says they have opted to include the Komatsu and Valmet brands in with their feller bunchers because

they have a long term operator who prefers to use them. The design is an upgrade to the old Timbco feller bunchers, with their unique boom and cab configuration.

When selecting equipment, Coleman said price is im-portant and the equipment’s ability to operate in summer logging conditions without heating up.

About three-quarters of their wood diet is lodgepole pine and the rest is white spruce. Their cutblocks can sometimes have slopes up to 45 degrees, so two of the company’s four feller bunchers are tilters. Finding enough space to deck

their logs is a constant challenge, given the terrain in which they work.

While he has been involved in forestry since his teenage years and is familiar with running all the equipment, today, Coleman spends most of his time working in the office and shuttling amongst his various endeavors to ensure each runs smoothly. A foreman takes care of day-to-day activity in the forest. Coleman said he has noticed a considerable

change in the logging industry recently as it relates to hiring operators.

“In the past when we advertised and the oil industry was booming, we’d maybe get one response to our advertise-ment,” he says. “Now, we are getting more than 50 applicants for each position.”

The past oil boom not only had an influence on the avail-ability of good operators, but also log trucks and drivers.

For that reason, Coleman Forest Products recently ventured into the log haul as well. Although this represents a signifi-cant additional expense to the business, Coleman said it provides them with an assurance their logs will be delivered on a timely and consistent basis, which is important for maintaining cash flow since they are paid on a delivered cubic metre basis.

They harvest about 160,000 cubic metres of their total annual volume for West Fraser, and Coleman said they have now taken on the log haul, they are comfortable with that volume of wood.

They own seven log trucks and employ two sub-con-tractors. Four of their trucks are Western Star 4900 trucks and three are Kenworth T800 trucks. All their trucks have tri-drive axle configurations designed for hauling logs

“There’s a transition there for sure to match your hauling capacity with your harvesting capacity,” Coleman said. “I do believe that it is a better fit for our company now that we do both."

In addition to logging, they also own a 5,000 cubic metre provincial commercial timber permit (CTP) and process the lodgepole pine and white spruce from that area on their Kara sawmill, which is located south of Sundre. It operates year round with three employees – a sawyer, manual stacker and wheel loader operator.

The sawmill produces rough, green lumber that might typically be used for cattle corrals and what Darcy calls ‘local cash and carry’ customers.

However, they also do considerable business supplying squares to West Fraser for their wood treatment plant.

Coleman Forest Products continues to offer custom logging services to other CTP holders in the area.

The forklift fork is often overlooked and under-inspected. Many are unaware of how often one should inspect their forks, and how to inspect them.

Forklift forks should be visually inspected on a per-oper-ation basis. In addition to visual inspections, federal law mandates a more thorough annual inspection be carried out by a trained professional, typically a forklift service provider. As part of the pre-operation visual inspection, forklift forks should be inspected for signs of cracks, bends, excessive wear or damage to either the fork tine or the positioning lock when using an ITA mounted fork. Here’s what to look for:

Excessive wear to the forksForklift forks decrease in thickness over time due to

normal wear. However, any wear to the fork of more than 10 per cent of the total thickness is considered excessive. Forks that show this amount of wear should be replaced.

Fractures due to stress or collisionBe sure to inspect the forks closely for fractures and

gouges. The fork heel and parts of the fork closest to the machine typically receive the most wear. Even small cracks and gouges are signs forks need to be replaced.

Damage to the fork tipSince fork tips are usually the first part of the fork to come

in contact with material, excessive wear or damage to the tips is a clear indicator the forks should be replaced.

All forks are delivered with a 90-degree angle from the shank to the blade. If any bend or uneven surface is detected on either the blade or shank, the forks need replacing.

Difference in fork blade heightA difference in the height of each fork blade should stay

within three per cent of the fork length. Therefore, if the forks in question are 42 in. long, the allowable difference in fork height would be 1.26 in. Any difference in fork height beyond 1.26 in. is a sign that both forks need to be replaced.

Wear or damage to the fork hookNoticeable wear, crushing, pulling and other deformities

are signs the fork hooks need to be replaced. Furthermore, if the wear to the hook is causing an excessive amount of distance between the fork and the carriage, the hooks should be replaced.

Wear or damage to positioning lockIf a positioning lock is no longer capable of locking com-

pletely due to wear the forks should immediately be removed from duty until the part is replaced. Operating without a fully functional positioning lock is a safety hazard and illegal.

COMMON REPLACEMENT QUESTIONS

Can a single fork be replaced or should they be replaced in pairs? While only a single fork might show signs of excessive

wear or damage, it is not safe to replace only one fork. It is highly recommended forks be replaced only in pairs to ensure equal performance.

Having two different forks with unique amounts of wear and disproportionate hourly usage provides a number of safety concerns.

Is it ok to make custom repairs or modification to the forks? It is typically recommended that only the fork manufac-

turer make repairs or modifications to ensure forks meet safety standards. Always contact your fork provider first when in need of modification.

How do I determine replacement fork quality?Forks made from high quality boron-carbon alloy high

strength steel are rated 20 per cent stronger than those made with 40CR. In addition, forks that are fully immersed into industrial heat treatment ovens and cooling pools are the most durable. Premium quality forklift forks should meet or exceed all ANSI/ITSDF and ISO standards.

Right now, they are using a tower crane, mobile crane, mobile drill machine, num-erous excavators and “other miscellaneous equipment” to get the job done.

“The tower crane will be used throughout most of the project to move formwork panels and concrete reinfor-cing steel. The mobile crane is used for placing rock anchors and rebar cages in the drilled piles and the mobile drill ma-chine is used to drill the steel pile casings, sockets and rock anchors,” they wrote.

“The excavators are used for mass excavation, loading of material and backfilling among other tasks.”

Cofferdam construction will be used for 300 parking

The D50 and D55 are the latest drill rigs to join Atlas Copco’s SmartROC series. Both drills are rugged rigs, enhanced with the latest technology to effectively tackle a wide variety of de-manding jobs with optimized power and precision.

“A l l t h e r i g s i n o u r SmartROC series represent intelligent innovation, and our newest SmartROC D50 and D55 rigs are no excep-tions," said Mattias Hjerpe, global product manager at Atlas Copco. "They have the brains and brawn to go the distance and keep on going."

The D50 and D55 drill rigs are powered by low-emission

engines, which can adapt their output to the task at hand at all stages of produc-tion.

The Rig Control System (RCS) in these rigs allows for intelligent control of engine rpm and air compressor load for effective penetration.

This allows for lower fuel consumption and less wear on components for great-er longevity. Automatic rod handling and uniform feeding also provide higher productivity and efficiency on site, according to the company.

The SmartROC D50 is de-signed for precision drilling of holes with a diameter of

3.5 in to 5.125 in. The SmartROC D55 is

specialized for holes with a slightly larger diameter of 3.5 in. to 6 in. and for depths of 148 ft. More shallow holes can be drilled with a larger diameter.

The Hole Navigat ion System from Atlas Copco is an intelligent option for SmartROC rigs for fast and accurate collaring and drill-ing to the desired depth and inclination.

Komatsu has introduced the new PC210LCi-11, in-telligent Machine Control hydraulic excavator, which includes the eagerly-await-ed machine-control-joystick functionality.

This second generation PC210LCi leverages the success of the previous PC210LCi-10.

New technology offers up to a 63 per cent improvement in excavating efficiency over a standard PC210LC-11 and traditional stake-plus-grade-checker methods.

The extra efficiency can save time and money by minimizing the need and expense of grading dozers and grade checkers. As well, it minimizes the costs asso-ciated with over-excavating, including extra materials, fuel and time. Furthermore,

the new machine utilizes the time usually spent waiting on grade checkers and over-ex-cavation to finish jobs and potentially collect on-time or finish-early project bonuses.

“This excavator is product-ive and precise enough to be a fixture on jobsites from base-ment and foundation pads to utility work,” said Sebastian Witkowski, product market-ing manager for Komatsu America. “In addition to the industry-leading efficiency all machine owners look for, the added convenience of the machine-control-joystick functionality should make operators happy too.”

Intelligent Machine ControlPioneering intelligent Ma-

chine Control almost five years ago provided Komatsu’s network of technology solu-

tion experts with experience helping customers maximize their intelligent mMachine Control investment. That experience has also helped customers identify integrated solutions, such as SmartCon-struction solution services, including 3D modeling, job-site setup, operator training; trouble shooting of 3D GNSS technology via included cel-lular modem; bundled block time TSE support packages, including on-site and re-mote/phone support; and Komatsu distributor single point-of-contact for all base machine or machine control issues.

Key features of intelligent Machine Control

» Factory integrated: intel-ligent Machine Control technology is factory installed and integrated into the base machine.

» Machine control function enabled joysticks: Fre-quently used machine control functions are now located on the operator’s control lever for increased convenience and comfort.

» Full 3D GNSS capabilities: The PC210LCi-11 features full 3D capabilities, al-lowing it to dig to grade everywhere on the jobsite.

Tervita Corporation has rented eight Volvo EC250E excavators for onsite remedi-ation and reclamation work at about 200 abandoned oil and gas well sites in Central Alberta.

Strongco announced the deal with Tervita, a Cal-gary-based environmental solutions provider, in September. The excavators are complete with wrist buckets and hydraulic thumbs and will be used on behalf of a high-profile

natural resources client. “At Tervita, our special-

ized site remediation and reclamation expertise is put to the test every day, and we’re always looking for ex-ceptional value and ROI,” said Steve Poke, director of equipment at Tervita. “The Volvo excavators have a com-petitive advantage when it comes to safety, reliability and fuel economy.”

Poke added the level of product support provided through Strongco, and its

preventative maintenance package, was also important to minimize downtime while maximizing machine use.

“We’re extremely pleased with the Volvo CareTrack system, which is highly in-tuitive and provides in-depth information on utilization, idling operator behaviours and fuel consumption on a daily basis across multiple locations,” Poke said.

In addition to the newly acquired units, Ter vita currently owns four Volvo crawler excavators, previ-ously purchased through S t r o n g c o , w h i c h a r e equipped with shears and multiple articulated haulers.

"Our extensive range of products and capabilities allows us to match their ex-pectations for the highest

level of quality, while meet-ing the exacting demands of this progressive industry," said Dave MacLeod, Strong-co’s Alberta key account manager of construction equipment.

Strongco Corporation is a major multiline mobile

equipment dealer. The com-pany sells, rents and services equipment used in diverse sectors such as construction, infrastructure, mining, oil and gas, utilities, munici-palities, waste management and forestry.

Strongco has about 500

employees serving custom-ers from 26 branches across Canada.

Tervita offers integrated earth, water, waste and re-source solutions to deliver safe and efficient results through all phases of a pro-ject.

CG Equipment, located in Southern Ontario, is the newest dealership to offer Prinoth tracked vehicles in Canada.

CG Equipment will rep-resent the Panther line-up in Ontario. Well-established as a construction dealer, CG Equipment will service the province’s various markets

as well as other off-road pro-jects and industries.

According to Prinoth, the number of new dealers representing the company throughout North America has grown significantly since the beginning of 2017.

“Pipeline construction for oil and gas is certainly on the increase,” said Doug

Little, director of sales at Prinoth. “There are many external reasons that gen-erate this level of interest in Prinoth’s products, but our technology combined with the outstanding quality and reliability of our platform, are two qualities we feel dealers are seeking when selecting new product lines to take on.”

With more than 50 years of tracked vehicle experience, Prinoth continues to develop and refine the sprocket-track system invented by Bombar-dier in 1935.

Thanks to the equipment’s large payloads, the vehi-cles can be equipped with a multitude of specialized attachments.

CG Equipment now offers Prinoth tracked vehicles in Ontario

Arizona isn't known for its hospitable climate, which is what makes it the ideal location for Doosan’s equipment test facility.

The ROC (Real Operation Center), located at the ASARCO Mission Mine south of Tucson in the Sonoran Desert, is where Doosan invites its staff and potential customers to test drive their full line of heavy equipment.

“It’s a tough terrain to operate in. The ground is really hard and compact, and it’s hot,” said Chad Kurle, training site manager for The ROC. “You’re dealing in some of the tougher environments that you would have to operate in with these machines.”

With ambient air temperatures reaching 44 C, Doosan is able to prove its equipment’s endurance.

“It gives people the opportunity to really put the machines through their paces,” Kurle said. “It’s the worst of circum-stances. It’s the toughest of environments that you’re going to put these machines into and it shows it can do the work in this environment.”

Never a rainy dayAside from rigorous test grounds, Arizona’s climate has

other advantages from a sales perspective. For example, the weather is consistent and rainfall is a rarity, allowing events to operate uninterrupted.

“In the middle of winter, for the majority of the United States and Canada, they have a chance for more downtime,” said Doosan’s marketing manager Aaron Kleingartner. “That’s a good time when we can bring them to Tucson. It can be a little slower from a work perspective.”

The ASARCO Mission Mine is a 20,000 acre copper mine, with an active pit spanning more than 9.6 sq. km. In 2014, the mine produced 133 million pounds of copper. With The ROC located on the tailings of an active mine, the ground is consistent for digging and testing.

“It’s been turned up in the mining process. Once you dig in it, three weeks to a month later, depending on the weather, it’s almost like its virgin ground again. It packs itself,” Kleingartner said.

“Customers get a very consistent experience when they come here.”

While the earth is consistent, it is also abrasive and harsh on the equipment.

“It gives them an accelerated testing environment from the sales side,” Kleingartner said.

Each year, The ROC will host eight to 10 customer ex-periences, where sales staff and equipment buyers from across North America spend a day testing heavy equipment.

“We do a welcome dinner and then spend a day out at The ROC and give them a chance to operate and spend some time with the equipment,” Kurle said, noting Canadian customers often attend the event. “The Canadian dealers are strong supporters of The ROC.”

A trip to test driveThe ROC also assists dealers when a customer asks about

a particular piece of equipment that is not in their fleet. “We’ll bring that customer down to The ROC and give

them the opportunity to try that machine,” Kurle said. “It’s expensive to get a machine from where it’s at to Toronto. So it’s cheaper to fly you down. You can spend the day oper-ating all the machines that you want. We do a fair number of those and have had success with it.”

Intense training For Doosan personnel, The ROC hosts week-long boot

camps to better familiarize staff with the company’s crawler and wheel excavators, log loaders, wheel loaders, material handlers and articulated dump trucks.

“They’re learning about features and benefits of the

equipment and how that applies to certain markets and applications within our industry,” Kleingartner said. “They also get a chance to run the equipment and really get a feel for what the equipment capabilities are.

“It’s a pretty intensive course of getting to know as much as you can about the equipment.”

Off the line testing The site also allows the North American division of

Doosan to test new equipment from the company. When a new machine arrives, similar models from competitors are brought to the site for side-by-side comparison. As well, third party operators are recruited to conduct the product testing.

“Often, we will get a prototype in, or we will get some of the first ones off the line,” Kurle said. “We’ll run them through their bases and compare our machines with what’s out there in the marketplace.”

Doosan operates similar facilities in its native South Korea as well as Prague, Czech Republic.

The ROC originally opened as a research and develop-ment test facility for Bobcat. Doosan joined the site in 2011.

“They do a lot of heat testing here at the Bobcat facility, just to get a feel for ambient air temperature and what those effects have on running equipment,” Kleingartner said, noting Doosan’s R&D is hosted closer to its manufacturing facilities.

Regardless of why someone visits The ROC, Kurle said he believes they walk away with an understanding that Doosan is a quality product.

“Even with some of the new sales people that come down, they recognize that Doosan puts out a really high-quality product,” he said.

“A product that competes with the competitors out there.”

Ritchie Bros’ annual Corporate Kids Chal-lenge will once again allow hundreds of youth to participate in organized sports.

For the past eight years, Ritchie Bros.’ Bur-naby office has hosted dozens of corporate teams to participate in a charity sports day challenge to raise funds for KidSport B.C.

This year, the event held on Sept. 9, raised about $138,000 for KidSport. In total, the event has raised more than $1.1 million throughout its eight years.

"I think the Ritchie Bros.' Corporate Kids Challenge is the best charity event in Can-ada, and it raises an unbelievable amount of money, allowing us to help more than 500 kids participate in a season of sport each year," said Pete Quevillon, director of KidSport B.C. "We are so fortunate to have Ritchie Bros. as a member of our family. Their support is so much more than just a corporate partnership.”

The Corporate Kids Challenge is designed to “bring out the kid” in its participants. The full-day event brings corporate teams together with a series of special guest team-mates, including Canadian Olympians, local athletes and celebrities. This year's event featured John Herdman, head coach of the

Canadian women's national soccer team; Canadian Olympians Elizabeth Gleadle (javelin) and Evan Dunfee (race walking). The event also includes a silent and live auction.

"We believe strongly in the power of sport to teach the life skills necessary to build future leaders in our communities," said Todd Wohler, chief human resources offi-cer at Ritchie Bros. "We started this event as a corporate charity initiative, but it has turned into so much more. Now every year our employees run their own fundraising initiatives leading up to the event and this year they raised more than $13,000. Getting involved with KidSport has helped grow our company culture in more positive ways than we could have imagined."

KidSport is a community-based sports funding program that provides grants for financially disadvantaged children to par-ticipate in amateur sports.

Quevillon added the company’s level of support extends beyond the actual event, and includes thousands of hours of volun-teerism and fundraising.

“Quite honestly, I don't know of another corporation that displays this level of passion for a cause," Quevillon said.

COMPACTION

Hamm is expanding its DV+ line with the soon-to-be released 90i tandem roller.

The first 7.7-ton DV+ 70i was introduced in March at Conexpo, and the 9.9-ton DV+ 90i will be available in January 2018.

The DV+ 70i and DV+ 90i are available in three versions: as a double vibration roller (VV), as an oscillation roller (VO) with vi-bration drum at the front and oscillation drum at the rear, and as a combi roller (VT) with vibratory drum front and pneumatic tires at the rear.

All vibration drums are split. In addition, the rollers can be equipped

with various chip spreaders; the HCQ Navi-gator intelligent compaction measurement and documentation system; country-specific lighting; edge pressing and cutting equip-ment; and many other extras.

An intelligent drive control – plus pivot steering with four steering modes and large turning angles – form the basis for high quality compaction.

The design is well thoughtout, enabling an excellent view of the drums and the work en-vironment, an important point when it comes to getting the smoothest mats and adhering to strict quality and safety requirements.

Split drums and smart drive The standard split drums ensure perfectly

compacted asphalt layers, even in tight curves, according to Hamm.

There is also a large turning angle, and the enormous track offset of the pivot steering allows the DV+ rollers to steer with great sensitivity in four different steering modes.

Thanks to the automatic reverse trans-mission, gentle braking and reversing with simultaneous seat reversal and subsequent acceleration are easily accomplished.

With the DV+, surfaces can be quickly com-pacted to a high standard, as all components in these rollers are matched to one another.

An important factor is the evenly distrib-uted weight of the DV+. This is due to the positioning of the engine in the centre of the machine and the two-part water tank that distributes the weight evenly in all operational states.

Long work intervals Refueling breaks interrupt the compaction

process. To avoid interruption, Hamm equipped the

DV+ series tandem rollers with large water and fuel tanks. Filling is user-friendly as the water can be replenished centrally from the ground quickly via a pressurized supply of at least 14.7 psi as a standard feature.

With tanks linked together via com-municating pipework, they are filled simultaneously. Connection to a hydrant is also an option. Alternatively, water can be gravity-fed from above via one of the four filling spouts on the top. Replenishment of diesel and hydraulic fluid is also arranged to be carried out from ground level.

Easy Drive conceptWhen Hamm developed its compaction

line, the company worked in collaboration with universities and ergonomics experts, as well as end users. The result is the Easy

Drive concept, an ergonomically optimized operator platform with many inventive de-tails. For example, the seat allows the driver to adopt a relaxed sitting position, facing the direction of travel in all situations, as it turns mechanically by 90 degrees in either direction.

As an option, the seat can also be elec-trically shifted and rotated by up to 350 degrees. The height, suspension and depth of the seat — as well as the position of the armrests — also are individually adjustable, as is the steering column angle.

Another feature of Easy Drive is its oper-ating structure.

The steering wheel is used for steering, while all other important functions are operated via a joystick and the multifunc-tion armrest.

Here, the driver is able to see all the keys on the joystick.

All other operating elements are arranged around the joystick with the most frequently

used fuctions placed closest to it. At the same time, the operation is designed to be entirely language-neutral.

Hamm uses colour coding to achieve an obvious assignment of the functions, and a clear overview.

Furthermore, Easy Drive provides a wide access way to the platform or cab, foldable armrests on request or an easy exit with tiltable steering column.

Documents and personal items can be securely stored in the many compartments around the seat, and two 12 V sockets pro-vide power for a cell phone or ice chest. In the optional cab, sound insulation reduces noise levels from the already quiet engines.

Limitless visibilityHamm offers two versions of the DV+ for

North America: with ROPS, or with enclosed ROPS panoramic cab.

With both versions, operators have an ad-vanced view of the drum edges at all times. This is made possible through the design of the platform or cab and of the water tanks. A special feature is the glass viewing pane in the floor that allows an unobstructed view of the drums from above.

On the models with ROPS cab, standard split doors ensure ample fresh air, and the upper half can be rotated by 180 degrees, while the lower rotates 85 degrees.

When the door is closed, air is led through window vents to the interior, and in winter, ventilation slots ensure speedy de-icing.

Future-proof engine The DV+ 70i is equipped with a 75 hp

engine to satisfy the requirements of Tier 4 / Stage IIIB emission requirements. The power pack filters soot particles with an effective diesel particulate filter as part of the exhaust purification.

This means the rollers are equipped with future-proof technology that can be used even in the most strictly regulated markets. The new automatic engine stop system may be incorporated as an optional extra, which switches the engine off during extended periods of inactivity to save fuel.

BOMAG has launched the “most advanced and versa-tile” compactor series in the company’s history.

Offering new design en-hancements, the six base models that make up the Dash 5 series of tandem vi-bratory rollers promise to increase productivity, im-prove mat quality and reduce service time.

Tackling a range of appli-cations from parking lots to

asphalt repair to highways and airports, this series of compactors offers rolling widths ranging from 59.1 in. to 84.1 in. to compact a wide range of paving widths.

B O M A G o f f e r s t h re e different vibration technol-ogies, including vertical, TanGO and Asphalt Man-ager throughout the asphalt roller line. Vertical vibration boasts dual amplitude and frequencies, which gives

the operator the flexibility to tailor compaction energy output to the application.

TanGO’s tangential os-cillating rear drum allows the rollers to be used on sensitive applications, like bridge overlays, thin lifts and around structures.

Asphalt Manager’s drum features vectoring vibration from true vertical to true horizontal as material stiff-ness increases.

Large 55.1 in. drum diam-eters on highway-class rollers help deliver a smoother sur-face finish to improve mat quality. The larger drum diameter rollers provide more impact surface area in contact with the asphalt to help prevent mat pushing and shoving. It also helps to eliminate the potential for bow waves in front of the drum, even when working at higher mainline compaction speeds on tender mats.

All rollers in the line fea-ture a Tier 4 Final diesel engine that meet the most stringent North American

emissions standards. As well, BOMAG’s Ecomode saves on operating costs by auto-matically matching engine speed to load demand.

When performing low-load tasks, like static rolling, the engine speed adjusts to conserve fuel. Additional-ly, the operator can set a predetermined idle time to automatically shut off the engine, once that time is exceeded. According to BOMAG, Ecomode can lower fuel costs by up to 30 per cent, compared to full engine speed operation, de-pending on the application.

To improve compaction performance and efficiency, the Economizer compaction measurement system is an option for all Dash 5 series rollers. Economizer delivers real-time compaction prog-ress to the operator via a LED light gauge on the instrument panel. As material stiffness increases, the number of il-luminated LED lights also

increase. The system also warns operators of potential over compaction to prevent aggregate fracturing. The company claims Economizer saves contractors time, fuel and money by eliminating unnecessary passes and al-lows the operator to identify and correct soft spots in the mat.

For the operator platforms, a single sliding and swiveling operator’s seat increases visibility to the machine’s front, rear and sides. The sus-pended seat with integrated travel lever slides 180 degrees along a back rail to give oper-ators direct line visibility to the drum’s edge. The console swivels along with the seat, so the controls and display are always in the same position relative to the seat.

BOMAG’s EasyService is built into the Dash 5 series of rollers, enabling contractors to maximize machine uptime by minimizing service time.

All machine maintenance

points can be easily reached from ground level. Featuring no grease zerks through-out the line to reduce daily maintenance, the rollers in-corporate special bearings that are hermetically sealed with high quality grease, providing reliable lifetime lubrication.

The rollers’ single-unit hydraulically opening hood easily swings up and out of the way to provide unob-structed access to the entire engine compartment.

The Dash 5 tandem vibra-tor rollers boasts pressurized water spray systems with interval-timing to prolong the need for tank refilling. To evenly distribute water to keep the drum clean, the rollers are equipped with two spring-loaded flexible polyurethane scrapers per drum. Available crab walk steering allows the front and rear drums to be offset to facilitate compaction along-side structures .

CONTRACTING

D.V.C.

Excavators and skid-steers are ubiquitous throughout construction sites, so it only makes sense to use these machines to their full cap-acity.

This is the main idea behind compaction attach-ments. These attachments minimize the amount of additional equipment re-quired on the job site, saving time and money and increas-ing the productivity of your heavy equipment.

Since the hydraulic com-pactor was invented by Allied Construction Products in 1965, compactors have evolved into highly versa-tile tools.

As well as compacting excavated soil, some com-pactor attachments can drive piles, posts and pipes, as well as break up hardened ma-terials.

Compaction attachments are available to fit on any size carrier, from your smallest mini-excavator or skid-steer, to the largest excavators capable of managing com-pactors exerting forces of 40,000 lbs. or more.

These attachments may take the format of tamping plates, vibratory plates, vibra-tory rollers and static rollers. Within these formats, the compactor will use either a dynamic or static form of action. Dynamic compact-ors use hydraulic-powered vibration to remove air and

shift soil into a more com-pact format, or impact force to physically push soil into place.

Static compactors use downward force created by the carrier, and may also apply a “kneading” action by employing pads on the surface of the plate or roller, as in the case of sheepsfoot rollers.

If soil is more than 50 per cent granular in compos-ition, dynamic vibratory compactors are ideal, since the soil moves freely under vibration.

However, if the soil is less than 50 per cent granular (higher in clay), impact-style dynamic compactors, or stat-ic compactors work best, as the soil is pushed into a more compact shape.

The space being worked on also determines the best compaction type.

The less confined the space is, the less effective impact and static compac-tion becomes, since it tends to push the soil outwards. Where possible, use vibratory compaction in open areas, as long as you have suitable soil types and conditions.

There are other reasons be-sides cost savings to choose compaction attachments over dedicated equipment, like ease of use and safety.

Since the compaction attachment is added to the boom of an excavator, the

compactor can be used in areas such as heavily sloped trenches or narrow ditches, without having to physically lower down a machine.

This has the added bene-fit of keeping workers safe by not exposing them to the possibility of collapsing ditch sides.

With the advantages of cost savings, flexibility, ease of use and safety, compaction attachments make a great addition to most construc-tion projects.

Put snow in its place.

The ACE in Ammann’s compactor lineupAmmann has released a new series of compactors that fea-ture a proprietary intelligent compaction system.

The four new ASC mod-els have a weight range of

11 to 17 tonnes and feature the latest Deutz engine and meet all EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage 4 Final emis-sions requirements. Typical applications for the rollers

include motorways, railways, airfields, rock dams, indus-trial zones, harbours and residential areas.

The ASC compactors also offer Ammann Compaction Expert (ACE), the propri-etary intelligent compaction system. Ammann became a trendsetter of intelligent compaction systems in the late 90s when it launched its first generation of ACE.

ACE is an automatic measurement, control and documentation system. As well, it can be supported with GPS mapping to pro-vide data regarding the areas the compactor has covered. All measured values can be displayed and evaluated, including the load-bearing capacity of the material, the number of passes and the frequency and amplitude values.

“We continue to build on our philosophy of providing quicker compaction in fewer passes,” said Vlasta Medek, Ammann’s Commercial Manager. “In addition, the ACE system and intuitive controls help inexperienced operators bring productivity to the jobsite – yet another key impact on profit for our customers.”

The operation of ACE is managed via a simple structured display, which

provides an easy-to-under-stand dialog that leads the operator through all aspects of achieving optimum results in the most efficient way.

The operator is guided through the menu, which helps to eliminate mistakes in operation and guaran-tees satisfying compaction results. In operation mode, the display focuses on the most relevant information and leads the operator by indicating the optimal rolling speed. All compaction data is

displayed and can be printed at any time. The printer can be operated and adjusted through the menu on the machine’s display.

The compactors are avail-able with two variations of the system. ACE Pro measures and evaluates ground char-acteristics and automatically adjusts the amplitude and frequency accordingly.

ACE Force measures the absolute value of the bearing capacity of the compacted material.

The ASC rollers also fea-ture a no-rear-axle concept, which enables stability, as well as manoeuverability and a compact machine design.

For operator comfort and safety, the machines in-clude a spacious cab with low sound levels, all-around machine visibility and a sim-ple dashboard for intuitive machine control.

Furthermore, the ASC rollers are designed to allow easy access to service and maintenance points.

Chicago Pneumatic Con-struction Equipment has expanded its line of forward and reversible plate com-pactors with the MV224.

The new plate compactor is a gasoline model, powered by a Honda petrol engine. According to Chicago Pneu-matic, the new model was designed to operate at a high speed for increased ef-ficiency on the job site, while maintaining durability.

Hardox steelThe MV224 features a 19.7-

in. plate width with a bottom plate that is made of Har-dox 400 steel, a multi-use, abrasion-resistant steel at a hardness of 400 HBW. The

steel plate resists wear while maintaining bendability. The compactor delivers near-ly 8,100 lbs. of centrifugal force at 3,500 vibrations per minute and speeds up to 82 ft./min.

A s w e l l , t h e e n g i n e, equipped with an electric starter, is protected by a heavy-duty frame.

With regulated speed and compaction depth, control of the forward and reversible movement is simplified.

Fu r t h e r m o r e , v i b r a -tion-dampened handles enable smooth, consistent operation to help achieve optimum compaction levels.

Chicago Pneumatic’s for-ward and reversible plates

are used for compacting dirt, gravel and soil in a variety of applications, while aiming to deliver ideal compaction power and speed in either direction.

The company claims the operator can back their way out of a trench while still compacting to enhance productivity.

Built for tough conditions, the machine’s user-friend-ly controls allow smooth regulation of speed and compaction depth.

Equipped with a self-clean-ing plate, the large open space between the upper and lower mass allows debris to fall off for easy mainten-ance.

Pictured here, in the mid-1960s, is a Galion Roll-o-Matic rubber-tired roller built in St. Thomas, Ont.

Ohio based Galion Iron Works manufac-tured road building equipment, including pull graders, from the early 1900s. With post-war construction booming, Galion made advancements to their line of gas and diesel-powered graders, as well as ex-panding their offering of asphalt rollers and off-road cranes.

Based on the pull type wobble-wheel roller, these innovative self-propelled com-pactors saw duty in road base construction, eventually becoming an essential addition to paving crews.

Although this nine-wheel model was rated at 6.3 tonnes when fully ballasted,

other manufacturers built units rated up to 45.3 tonnes. The roller shown here was powered by an International six-cylinder gas engine and matched with a three-speed transmission, reverser and featured a de-celerator. Having become mandatory on paving jobs, typically it would follow the break-down steel wheel roller providing excellent asphalt mat compaction.

To see more than 60 restored pieces of vintage construction equipment in action, be sure to attend HCEA Canada’s 2017 an-nual ‘Last Blast’ event on Saturday, October 14th. held at the Simcoe County Museum near Barrie, Ontario.

FOCUS UTILITIES

Ditch Witch partners with Utilicor Technologies

Ditch Witch is partnering with Utilicor Tech-nologies to deliver a less-disruptive approach to underground utility repairs.

The two companies recently announced the partnership, which will see Ditch Witch mini skid steers fitted with the new Utilicor MTC100 coring attachment to perform keyhole coring.

“Our partnership with coring technology leader, Utilicor, gives our organization a strong point of entry into the coring market,” said Randy Rupp, Ditch Witch vice president of product strategy.

“The new MTC100 coring attachment will complement our portfolio of mini skid steers and vacuum excavation equipment for work under paved surfaces, and it gives cities and utilities a quick, money-saving advantage.”

The partnership will allow Utilicor to expand the reach of its coring and reinstate-ment technology through the Ditch Witch global dealership network.

“Both of our companies have spent years developing customer confidence in our brands, and we’re fully committed to provid-

ing exceptional support and service to our customers,” said Marshall Pollock, president and CEO of Utilicor.

“This agreement reaffirms that commit-ment.”

Keyhole coring is a safer, cost-effective and less disruptive approach to utility work. The technique eliminates the need for contract-ors to bring heavy and physically demanding equipment like jackhammers and backhoes, to utility maintenance projects that requires asphalt or concrete repairs. Instead, they’re able to perform repairs, without rerouting traffic or exposing large areas of open ex-cavation.

Coring techniques offer significant cost and time savings. Today, keyhole coring technologies are about 50 per cent less costly compared to traditional excavation repairs and disposal removal. Roads can be reopened to traffic within 30 minutes of repair completion.

“It comes down to using smaller, more precise tools and a more localized approach,” Rupp explained.

“The result is less disruption and faster repair.”

The MTC100 was developed in partnership with Utilicor as the first product entry into the coring market for Ditch Witch. Designed to work exclusively with the SK800, SK1050 and SK1550 SK line of mini skid steer units, the MTC100 will accurately cut up to an 18-in. diameter hole and 22-in. depth, minimizing surface disruption. Vacuum systems are then used to excavate down to the utility for main-tenance that can be performed from the road surface using special long-handled tools.

When the underground work is complete, the original core is bonded back into the pavement as a permanent pavement repair. No patching or repaving is required.

In addition to the MTC100 coring attach-ment, Utilicor provides the reinstatement material Utilibond, which is capable of supporting up to 50,000 lbs in just 30 min-utes. The pavement-bonding compound results in a permanent pavement repair that reduces public inconvenience, requires no additional paving materials and is effective for more than 10 years.

By Dan PeltonWhen it comes to municipal affairs, infra-structure maintenance hardly qualifies as a sexy issue.

Such functions as sewer and water lines barely get a second thought until, of course, there’s a blockage or a pipe burst. Then all hell breaks loose.

Operating on the premise that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, muni-cipalities are increasingly deploying robot technology to inspect their pipe networks , and monitor potential problems like tree-root infiltration, seismic activity and wear and tear caused by age.

Among the purveyors of this technology is Inuktin Services Ltd. in Nanaimo, B.C.

Describing itself as the “Multi-Mission Modular robotics company,” Inuktun has developed IM3technology for the remote visual inspection and non-destructive testing of confined spaces and hazard-ous environments; wherein separate, yet interactive, modular components can be fitted together to build a robotic crawler, or inspection camera system, that is ideal for a specific task.

“Like any modular building set, the po-tential applications of such systems are limitless,” said Inuktin’s Priscilla Johnson. “(IM3) means significant time savings, cost efficiencies and risk mitigation for customers and end users.

“Plug-and-play equipment saves dollars and makes sense.”

The advantages of robotics are obvious. Inuktun’s IM3 offering, for example, can traverse more than two kilometres of pipe in a single run. It can be easily adapted for client-specific data collection with NDT tools and sensors that include sonar, laser profiling and chemical sensors.

A notable and important aspect of IM3 is

there is usually no cleaning and preparation required for the robots to navigate pipe that is often dirty, silty and containing various obstacles.

“Our crawler systems employ Microtracs and Minitracs tracked transporter modules that offer increased traction in particularly challenging municipal pipes,” explains Johnson.

Options for increased traction are also offered with the adaptation of an OnSpec custom solution. Inuktun’s Versatrax pipe inspection crawlers employ an adjustable chassis for varying pipe sizes, as well as a motorized camera apparatus that allows the vehicle to negotiate obstacles. Inuktun offers an optional manipulator arm that’s

used to remove obstacles and can handle the deployment of other tools.

Like any technology that is relatively new on the scene, robotics can be a little intimidating to those unfamiliar with it. Yet high-tech is consistently becoming more user-friendly and these robotic inspection devices are no exception to the rule.

Inuktun’s plug-and-play camera and crawler systems require minimal oper-ational training and produce data analysis that is easy to read. This robot technology has been successfully used in a number of municipalities, including Toronto.

Global Asset Management Engineering (GAME) successfully performed a remote visual pipe inspection of main transmission

lines leading to and from a Toronto water pumping station.

With the help of an OnSite Versatrax 150 crawler and Inuktun’s Spectrum 90 camera, GAME inspected century-old cast iron pipes –750 and 900 mm in diameter –and was able to discover silty substances on the pipe, as well as minor cracks in the cement mortar and joints.

In conclusion, maintaining municipal infrastructure pipes may not be as glamorous as, let’s say, a new community auditorium. One thing for sure though, auditorium patrons will be grateful that technology such as Inuktin IM3 is ensuring they will be unimpeded when they go about their business at intermission.

Pipe dreams become a reality with IM3technology

Hydro One sent more than 80 vehicles to Florida to assist with Hurricane Irma relief efforts.

Hurricane Irma severed power for about 4.5 million Florida Power and Light customers, making it one of the largest outages caused by a natural disaster in the United States’ history.

To assist with the recovery, Hydro One announced it will send 150 lines and forestry staff, as well as 25 supporting personnel, including mechanics.

As well, crews brought 52 bucket trucks to Florida, as well as 30 other vehicles and pieces of equipment to transport and replace hydro poles.

“We are proud of Hydro One’s long-standing history of responding to help other communities in need. Hydro One’s highly skilled employees are trained to work on both transmission and distribution systems as well as in storm and emergency situations, making them incredibly valuable resources during a devastating hurricane,” said Greg Kiraly, chief operating officer of Hydro One.

“Access to electricity can be a lifeline in a disaster and our

crews are determined to help restore power to the families and businesses in Florida as quickly and safely as possible.”

Crews crossed the border into the United States in the Niagara Region, Thousand Islands, Pigeon River and Fort

Frances on Sept. 11. They were scheduled to reach the af-fected areas by Sept. 13.

Toronto Hydro also sent about 30 employees to help with restoring power in the Tampa area.

As part of the North Atlantic Mutual Assistance Group, Hydro One participated in National Response Event discus-sions about sending resources to areas hit by the hurricane. On Sept. 9, the Ontario utility company received an official request for help from Florida Power and Light.

Hydro One has reciprocal agreements in place with North American utilities to provide assistance during significant power outages. In these mutual assistance situations, all costs are covered by the utility receiving assistance.

“We want to thank our employees in advance for leaving their families to help our neighbours in need. The com-mitment of our employees to assist during times of crisis is something every Ontarian should be proud of,” Kiraly said.

Club Car enhances van boxesfor work utility vehicles

Based on customer and dealer feedback, Club Car has intro-duced two new van box systems.

The new boxes address problems such as damaged panels and corners, water intrusion and security.

The first box is designed specifically to fit Carryall 500 work utility vehicles and street-legal Carryall 510 low speed vehicles (LSV) with standard lockable double rear doors.

The second is designed for Carryall 700 work utility vehicles and street-legal Carryall 710 LSVs. This larger box features lockable double doors on each side as well as on the back of the box.

Both boxes are made of rustproof powder-coated aluminum.“The boxes feature a new robust design that looks similar

to traditional van boxes, but comes standard with features that improve performance and returns on investment,” said Club Car utility product manager Jerod McDowell.

Other new features on the boxes include: Interior LED lighting for greater visibility; bolt-on panels that allow re-placement in the event of damage, rather than welded sides; reinforced corners that increase durability in commercial applications; no windows to eliminate leaking and improves cargo security; and magnetic catches on unlatched doors for easy opening and closing, especially on inclines. The boxes come standard in white or gray.

The boxes may also be accessorized with shelves to increase the usable area within the van boxes; dual top-mounted lad-der racks that support up to 150 lbs.; and high-mount brake light and backup light system that improves visibility and safety. These items are required on Carryall 510/710 LSVs.

Terex Utilities launches new tech and equipment at ICUEE

Terex Utilities is launching several new products and technologies at the Inter-national Construction & Utility Equipment Expo (ICUEE).

The Optima Series of aerial devices, made their debut at ICUEE, held at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville on Oct. 3 to 5.

The four models of aerial devices feature lower travel height, better ground access and improved boom speeds.

The 50- to 60-ft. class of Hi-Ranger over-centre and non-over-centre aerial devices are engineered to improve per-formance.

More reach The Optima TC55, for example, is a 55-ft

non-over-centre aerial device with up to 42.8 ft. of side reach — three feet longer than the legacy model, which helps with truck positioning at the jobsite.

As well, the platform can be lowered near the ground, making it easier for operators to access and handle tools and equipment delivered by the ground crew.

As fleet managers often request reliable equipment with maximum uptime, Terex reduced and simplified maintenance on the Optima TC55.

A new pedestal design allows for easier access for torqueing lower rotation bearing bolts. O-ring face seals allow for improved hydraulic connections and are used on hoses and fittings above rotation.

New TechAt the expo, Terex is demonstrating the

HyPower IM idle mitigation management system and the Load Alert aerial device monitoring system.

HyPower IM reduces engine idling for boom operation and cab comfort systems for utility trucks. The system manages the chassis engine for high horsepower require-ments and to move the boom with integrated battery power for incremental movements and cab comfort. This design optimizes the system to provide a low weight for increased payload capacity.

“The utility industry has been chasing the promise of increased electrification of our fleets for many years. HyPower IM is the first system that balances simplicity with a real payback for fleet owners,” said Ted Barron, vertical market product manager.

Load Alert, which was introduced last year, is the first of its kind load sensing technology for the insulated aerial device market.

At ICUEE, Terex is highlighting new capabilities of the system.

When used with an aerial device’s material handling load chart, the Load Alert system provides both visual and audible alarms to alert operators and the ground crew when a platform or jib capacity is exceeded.

“Utilities are looking for solutions that support safe work practices, are reliable and cost-effective throughout the life of the equipment,” said Terex marketing director Joe Caywood. Terex is responding by de-livering new technologies that do just that.”

Enhanced augersAs well, Terex is announcing significant

enhancements to its auger drills product line, which are designed to make the equip-ment easier to operate.

The new auger drills will be simpler to maintain, contributing to improved life cycle costs.

The Optima Series of aerial devices makes its debut at the International Construction & Utility Equipment Expo (ICUEE), held at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville on Oct. 3 to 5.

The latest addition to Manitowoc’s line of Grove telescoping crawler cranes is making its ICUEE debut.

The GHC30 is the smallest member of the GHC range, but offers the same 100 per cent pick-and-carry function as the rest of the line. With its full-power, three-section 83-ft. telescoping boom, operators can handle a variety of lifts at any radius without setting up outriggers.

“The GHC30 boasts excellent gradeability, low ground-bearing pressure and multiple attachment options, such as the pole claw, auger and personnel basket,” said John Bair, Manitowoc’s product manager for GHC cranes. “All of these features — paired with class-leading boom length and capacities — make this a powerful and versatile crane that will improve efficiency on utility jobs and provide our customers with a great return on investment.”

At Manitowoc’s ICUEE booth, the GHC30 is outfitted with pole claw and auger attachments. These attachments are particularly effective when working at electrical substations and surrounding distribution lines. When equipped with

the auger and pole claw, the crane is adept at off-loading, lifting and installing the poles needed for these projects.

ICUEE, short for the International Construction and Utility

Equipment Exposition, is held at the Kentucky Expo Center in Louisville from Oct. 3 to 5.

National Crane NBT45-1At the show, Manitowoc is displaying three of its strong-

est products for the utilities market, the GHC30, as well as National Crane’s NBT45-1 and National Crane’s 890D.

The National Crane NBT45-1 sports a 142-ft. boom and is suited to the utility sector, where energy work on de-ener-gized power lines and new transmission infrastructure construction requires the use of both a crane and an aerial lift.

The model at ICUEE is equipped with a two-person, 1,200 lbs. maximum-capacity, quick-attach yoke platform with wireless radio remote control.

“With this crane, customers will gain the benefits of having both a boom truck and an aerial lift in just one package, potentially cutting their need for two or more machines down to one,” said Justin Pilgrim, global product director for boom trucks and carrydeck cranes at Manitowoc. “The NBT45-1 offers the best of both worlds with straightforward setup, clear steps to reconfigure it as an aerial lift, and simpler, smarter operation when in use. Utility-focused customers will find a host of useful functions, including a wireless wind-speed sensor and a hydraulic tool circuit with a pressure intensifier in the aerial work platform.”

National Crane 890D The 890D boom truck is equipped with an optional auger

attachment on its 90-ft. boom. With a two-speed auger, the 890D boasts 14,000 foot pounds of torque and a 39-ft. maximum digging radius. The boom truck can also be supplied with various flighting options that range up to 48 in. The 890D’s capability for both lifting and high-torque digging makes it suitable for a wide range of utility work. For example, the crane can drill holes for pilings, utility poles and light poles, and then install the components once drilling is complete.

“The National Crane 890D auger unit has been specifically engineered for the demanding utilities and construction sectors,” said Robert Ritter, Manitowoc’s product engineering manager for boom trucks. “It’s been built from the ground up to handle many different lifting and digging applications. We trust that visitors to our ICUEE booth will be impressed with the versatility this boom truck can add to their fleets.”

“All my customers love the Bobcat machines.”Bobcat of Toronto

Terry Harasym, owner of Nova Rentals poses with Todd Gill, territory manager for Bobcat of Toronto, with the Bobcat T450 compact track loader.

Terry Harasym was an electrician by trade but wanted something more. He started with operating scissor lifts and then decided to open his own equipment rental. Nova Rentals serves the GTA, Niagara, Golden Horseshoe, and Barrie areas. He also quickly found out that there was a demand for earth moving equipment so he called Bobcat of Toronto for help.

“It has been very easy to deal with Bobcat of Toronto and specifically territory manager, Todd Gill. Todd was able to arrange 0% financing for me for a Bobcat® T450 compact track loader and a MT85 mini track loader, which is not

easy when starting up a new business,” states Terry.

“All my customers love the Bobcat machines. They get upset if they call and find out they are already out on rental. The customers put the machines through tough jobs and they keep on going. Maintenance and repair on the machines are quick and easy; which is important since I have such a high demand for my Bobcat machines”.

“I had other companies call me regarding purchasing equipment but I have to say, Todd Gill provides me with

the extra personal service that the others don’t. I once ordered a Bobcat HB980 breaker from Todd, then I called him and told him I didn’t need it now, and he said, “no problem!” In fact, he sold it right away to someone else. The only reason I know that, is because I changed my mind and needed it once again. Without hesitation, he ordered and delivered me a new one right away. Just made more sense to buy one than rent it. Todd has been very patient with me and would definitely recommend him.”

Thanks Terry.
