What is Smartphone

A smartphone is a mobile phone with highly advanced features. A typical smartphone has a high-resolution touch screen display, WiFi connectivity, Web browsing capabilities, and the ability to accept sophisticated applications. The majority of these devices run on “mobile operating system”

A smartphone is expected to have a more powerful CPU, more storage space, more RAM, greater connectivity options and larger screen than a regular cell phone. 

High-end smartphones now run on processors with high processing speeds.

What is Mobile Operating System

A mobile operating system (mobile OS) is an OS built exclusively for a mobile device, such as a smartphone, personal digital assistant (PDA) or tablet.

A mobile OS is similar to a standard OS (like Windows, Linux, and Mac) but is relatively simple and light and primarily manages the wireless variations of local connections. and broadband .

Below is an example describing how text messaging works on a mobile OS: 

-A mobile application allows a user to read and write a message for delivery to a mobile device through radio signal waves. After the device receives the message signals, the device notifies the mobile OS, which stores the message and notifies the messaging application.

-The user reads the message and responds with a reply message.

-The OS uses the hardware antennae to transmit the message.

History of Mobile OS

1994

it's widely considered the first true smartphone, the IBM Simon, has a touchscreen, email and PDA features.

1996

 Palm Pilot 1000 personal digital assistant is introduced with the Palm mobile operating system.

1999

Nokia S40 OS is officially introduced along with the Nokia 7110

2000

Symbian becomes the first modern mobile OS on a smartphone with the launch of the Ericsson R380.

2002Microsoft's first Windows CE (Pocket PC) smartphones are introduced.

BlackBerry releases its first smartphone.

2005Nokia introduces Maemo OS on

the first internet tablet N770.

2007 Apple iPhone with iOS is

introduced as an iPhone, "mobile phone" and "internet communicator.

2008 OHA releases Android 1.0 with

the HTC Dream as the first Android phone.

2009Samsung announces the Bada OS

with the introduction of the Samsung S8500.

2010 Windows Phone OS phones are

released

2013 BlackBerry released their new

operating system for smartphones and tablets, BlackBerry 10.

Common software platforms

Android

Android is an operating system based on the Linux kernel, and designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Initially developed by Android, Inc., which Google backed financially and later bought in 2005, Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset.

The user interface of Android is based on direct manipulation, using touch inputs that loosely correspond to real-world actions, like swiping, tapping, pinching and reverse pinching to manipulate on-screen objects. Internal hardware such as accelerometers, gyroscopes and proximity sensors are used by some applications to respond to additional user actions, for example adjusting the screen from portrait to landscape depending on how the device is oriented.

Apple OS

iOS (previously iPhone OS) is a mobile operating system developed and distributed by Apple Inc. Originally unveiled in 2007 for the iPhone, it has been extended to support other Apple devices such as the iPod Touch (September 2007), iPad (January 2010), iPad Mini (November 2012) and second-generation Apple TV (September 2010)

The user interface of iOS is based on the concept of direct manipulation, using multi-touch gestures. Interface control elements consist of sliders, switches, and buttons. Interaction with the OS includes gestures such as swipe, tap, pinch, and reverse pinch, all of which have specific definitions within the context of the iOS operating system and its multi-touch interface.

Windows Phone

Windows Mobile  is an operating system supported by Microsoft. Windows Mobile is based on Microsoft Win32 API. Windows mobile works on some devices including Pocket PC, smartphones, communicators. Most versions of Windows Mobile have a set of standard features such as multitasking and the ability to navigate a file system and

it comes bundled with a set of applications.

Other OSBlackberry It is closed source and proprietary.

BlackBerry 10 was the next generation platform for BlackBerry smartphones and tablets. One OS was planned for both Blackberry smartphones and tablets going forward.

Firefox  is from non-profit organization Mozilla

Foundation.It is open source and uses GPL.

Symbian  is from Nokia for certain models of their

current entry level smartphones. It is proprietary software. Runs Series 40 or S40. The Operating System is found running on Nokia's Asha devices
