From the Editor

According to a research from Gartner Inc. - By 2013, the no. of people accessing internet from their smartphones or tablets will exceed those using laptops or desktops. These figures show that a huge opportunity lies in front of the Telcos to open a new source of revenue. According to the report by GSMA, India will become the second largest Mobile Broadband market globally within the next four years with 367 million Mobile Broadband connections by 2016. Thanks to the technologies like 3G and 4G, mobile broadband in India has picked up momentum. However according to the report, India 4G and Cellular Market Analysis and Forecasts, 2012-2017 problems with spectrum and device availability are some factors that prevent the deployment of wireless broadband In India. On LTE front, multi-mode devices that support 4G as well as 3G and 2G technologies gives operators the opportunity to expand 4G. Thus in my view, providing affordable, low cost devices is the need of an hour in order to accelerate the adoption of 4G in India

Supporting more than six billion connections, the mobile phones have transformed how we communicate, and connect with each other. Many sectors of the economy, including education, travel, automobiles etc. are now harnessing the mobile platform to improve their efficiency and effectiveness. With the introduction of $100 Android Smartphones, it has now become easier for everyone to access the computing power at their handsets. Needless to mention the rapid innovation happening with BYOD in today’s business environment, it only makes sense that the use of these devices as a primary means of exchanging information is becoming mainstream.

The education sector in form of ‘mLearning’ represents a new growth opportunity for companies across the mobile industry. By engaging directly with students, as well as with educational institutions and companies, mobile operators can increase their revenues, retain existing customers, reduce churn and extend their services beyond the boundaries of ‘just’ communications services.

mLearning: what is it exactly ? One definition of mobile learning is: Any sort of learning that happens when the learner is not at a fixed, predetermined location, or learning that happens when the learner takes advantage of the learning opportunities offered by mobile technologies (As stated in Wikipedia).

The near-ubiquity of handheld devices will enable the idea of "knowledge in the hand," so it becomes a widespread reality across globe.

1.

Today, this market is worth around USD 3.37 billion—a mere 10% of the overall eEducation market, which in turn forms just 1% of the total USD 4 trillion spent worldwide on education. However, McKinsey & Co. and the GSMA have estimated the worldwide mobile opportunity in the education sector will be worth USD 70 billion by 2020, of which USD 32 billion is attributable to hardware and equipment sales with the balance split across a range of products and services, such as eBooks, eCourses, game and simulation-based learning tools, and collaboration tools.

Market Drivers for mLearning According to Ambient Insight, a mobile learning market research firm, various catalysts that are fostering the adoption of mLearning include: • The increase in number of content distribution

channels (such as App stores). • Rapid evolution of wireless handheld devices. • Growing number of mobile learning tools and

platforms. • The sharp increase of new learning content and

apps. • Growing number of buyers and users.

While smartphones have been on the market for years, the

emergence of media tablets is accelerating the penetration of powerful portable devices. IDC reported global smartphone sales in 2011 at 491 million units, 60% higher than 2010 sales. Similarly, 62 million tablets were sold in 2011, a 252% increase from the 17.6 million units sold in 2010

The mEducation opportunity can be USD 70 billion by 2020

From a geographic perspective, North America represents the largest individual region with a revenue opportunity of USD 15 billion equating to almost 40% of the global market in 2020, followed by Asia Pacific at USD 12 billion.

Distribution of mLearning market opportunity by geography by 2020

Advantages of mLearning mEducation has the potential to improve learning outcomes in several ways:

2.

• Wider geographic reach: Mobile networks cover almost 90% of the global population today, creating an unprecedented platform to increase the availability of education.

• mEducation can enable learners worldwide to access locally and globally simplified relevant content–overcoming constraints of time and location.

• Each learner can learn at his or her own pace. • Yet another blessing is a huge saving in the

cost of learning materials and also commuting expenses.

• Effective learning is often social in nature. Presence of applications like texting, e-mail, twitter, Facebook, makes it easier for learner to interact in more and varied ways

Challenges • Limited Internet Access/ Insufficient

connectivity. • Price tag of a mobile device/e-books/tablets . • Cost of Data Packages and learning apps.

Mobile Broadband Readiness

Mobile Broadband has changed the way people communicate today. With easy access to the Internet at speeds up to or exceeding 100 megabits per second (Mbit/s) consumers can use their mobile phones for a wide range of activities, including surfing the Internet, purchasing goods and services online, streaming video or music and conducting financial transactions. According to cisco VNI, 2012 overall mobile data traffic is expected to grow to 10.8 exabytes per month by 2016, an 18-fold increase over 2011. Middle East and Africa will experience the highest CAGR of 104 percent, increasing 36-fold over the forecast period. Asia Pacific (a region that now includes Japan) will have the second highest CAGR of 84 percent, increasing 21-fold over the forecast period.

Mobile Broadband Yet to Reach Masses Mobile broadband not has not been incorporated as a part of the economic development plan for many countries, thus there exists a lag between mobile penetration and mobile broadband penetration. Although developing countries are catching up in terms of 3G coverage, huge disparities remain between mobile‐broadband penetration in the developing (8%) and the developed world (51%).

Reasons for Low Mobile Broadband Penetration a) Competitive Prices: Mobile growth is being largely driven by more affluent communities in cities. Net additions in urban areas of India reached 85

3.

million last year compared to 57 million in rural areas, with mobile penetration increasing by 20 percentage points in urban areas to 161 percent, against a 6.5 percentage point rise in rural areas to 36.6 percent. However, the cost of smartphones and data plans remains a concern. b) Spectrum Issues: With future wireless broadband number looking favorable, the fact is hard to digest that there is not enough available spectrum to sustain the anticipated growth in wireless broadband. Mobile tablet market may increase by 700% in 5 years but they serve no purpose if the wireless carriers can’t obtain more spectrums to run the hungry devices. c) Existence of Multiple Technologies: Existence of multiple technologies like 2g, 3G, LTE, and Wi Max hampers operator’s network investment decision. More over the investment required to roll out new networks or to upgrade existing networks require huge capital. d) Focus of National Broadband Plans on Fixed Broadband: Most emerging economies have a national broadband plan in place. However, most focus on building a robust fixed-line infrastructure. Given the relatively high installation costs, the wireless broadband route may make more sense for many developing nations, especially in rural areas or where population density is low.

Mobile Broadband Readiness of India India will become the second largest Mobile Broadband market globally within the next four years with 367 million Mobile Broadband connections by 2016, GSMA said. However according to the report, India 4G and Cellular Market Analysis and Forecasts, 2012- 2017 problems with spectrum and device availability are some factors that prevent the deployment of wireless broadband In India, with 3G license holders being awarded with only 5 MHz per operator as compared to 20 MHz in many other markets.

TRAI sets free SMS cap of 100 SMS per day per SIM In order to curb unsolicited calls and SMS, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has issued a new directive, asking all telecom providers to take additional measures for controlling SMS spam. The TRAI has asked Telco's to put a price restraint on sending more than one hundred SMS per day per SIM at a concessional rate. TRAI has even prescribed a tariff of minimum Fifty paise (50p/SMS) for such SMSs beyond the limit of 100 SMS per day per SIM.

Current Telecom Tariff is at unsustainable levels: Bharti Airtel Bharti Airtel CEO (India and South Asia) Sanjay Kapoor has made a strong case for the hike in the present telecom tariffs saying that it is at unsustainable levels for most of the industry. The leading telcos have all along been maintain that the rise in the tariff is inevitable in the face of the government’s decision to hike the reserve price for the spectrum auction to be held in November. According to the exclusive sources of ‘Telecom Talk’, in next few days, Govt operator MTNL which operators in Mumbai and Delhi may increase its prepaid mobile tariff which is currently cheapest in GSM/3G market.

After Zain, now Etisalat inks pact with iPass for Wi-Fi Service Etisalat -- the Middle East's largest telecom operator with over 167 million subscribers in its markets -- has joined the iPass Open Mobile Exchange (iPass OMX) to offer their consumer and enterprise customers a global Wi-Fi data roaming service. will allow Etisalat to offer their customers travelling abroad the option to use their smartphones and tablets to get connected at over a million Wi-Fi hotspots in the global iPass network at more affordable rates. The deal comes less than two months after US- based iPass announced a similar agreement with Etisalat’s rival, Zain.

Microsoft sued over Windows 8 live tiles SurfCast, a Maine, US, based company filed its lawsuit on Tuesday in the US District Court against Microsoft over its use of "live tiles" on the main display screen, the one that appears whenever a user starts up Windows. Ovid Santoro, CEO of SurfCast, said on SurfCast's website, "We developed the concept of Tiles in the 1990s, which was ahead of its time. Microsoft's Live Tiles are the centerpiece of Microsoft's new operating systems and are covered by our patent."

Samsung surpasses 30M galaxy S III shipments Samsung Electronics said it passed the milestone of 30 millionunit sales of its Galaxy S III flagship smartphone, hitting the mark nine months faster than its predecessor, the S II. Samsung confirmed that the 30 million "sales" are shipments into sales channels and not necessarily sell-through numbers to end users. The S II took 14 months to hit 30 million sales. Sales of the Galaxy Note II, which fills a market niche between smartphones and tablets, surpassed 3 million in 37 days, Samsung said last week.

MobileComm was officially incorporated in 2002 with a vision to develop a wireless services organization built on best practices which would allow us to cater clients’ unique needs and an innovative technology solution to bring it all together. We started to build an operational platform based on Total Quality Management, and in just one year, we quadrupled in size. We grew our business with a skeleton sales department and practically no advertising because we believe that businesses grew by referrals and reputation rather than through sophisticated marketing. Our commitment and focus led to the establishment of MobileComm India in 2007, mCarbon (VAS division) in 2008 and MobileComm Canada in 2009. What started out as a small operational platform budded into a multinational corporation serving over 100 clients in three continents and 15 countries namely USA, Canada, India, Brazil, Oman, Kuwait, Nairobi, among others. We have been recognized as one of Dallas/Fort Worth’s Fastest Growing Companies for five consecutive years. For our growth, competitiveness and social responsibilities, we have been awarded numerous accolades including:

• MobileComm Professionals, Inc. awarded Deloitte’s 2009 Technology Fast 500™. • Ranked 2nd fastest growing American Owned Indian companies VII-100 in 2009. • Ranked 14th fastest growing company by Comerica Collins 60 2009. • Recognized SMU Dallas Top 100 Technology Companies in Dallas Forth Worth 2009. • Finalist - Companies which showed the entrepreneurial spirit in the celebration of enterprise event

2007. • Nominated - North Central Texas Regional Certification Authority(MBE) for outstanding Achievement

Award. • ISO 9001 certification from TRC ANAB accredited, for maintaining and following highest Quality

standards in providing Engineering Services. • Ranked 17th in providing professional services nationwide organized by V100 identifying top 100

minority owned companies in 2005

The organization's growth has been remarkable. Our greatest strength has been our ability to develop partnerships with stakeholders for engineering services, staffing solutions and learning services. Though we have expanded and broadened our expertise, training capabilities and networks, we have to constantly ‘raise the bar’ to stay the best.

Over the last 10 years we have enjoyed your support and your business. Today, we would like to thank you for entrusting your company’s faith and well-being to us. We believe that our vision is achievable, and we need your support to get there.

Eagerly looking forward to the next 10 years!

Remaining Lessons From

World Travelling the

We covered 12 lessons in our previous issue and as promised, here are the remaining ones: 13. You can’t Please Everyone: State your opinion and stick to your guns. If you are confident enough and share your idea with enough people, you will tick off someone no matter what you talk about. That’s their problem, not yours. 14. Make Mistakes – and LOTS of them! Mistakes are how we learn. Failures are the stepping stones to success. 15. Stop thinking so much and act: People think their way out of doing everything that’s worth doing in life. 16. Dance & Sing whenever possible: Dancing and singing are great releases and forms of expression. It’s hard not to feel good after a session of either!

- By Benny Lewis

17. You don’t know what you’ve got ’till it gone: Don’t take anything for granted. Life is too short - if I lost anything important to me then I want to make sure that I never wasted the time I did have with it or with him or her. 18. Swallow your pride and apologize: Never hold a grudge and never try to win every argument. Sometimes it’s best to let your pride slide for the sake of clearing the air with someone. Be the first to say you’re sorry. Never wait for the other person to make the first move. 19. Doing anything specifically to impress people is stupid: People will never give you the validation you seek if you try to be a dancing monkey for them. Saying how many languages you speak, how rich you are, who you know, where you studied or what you do for a living, or trying to show-off in any other way to get someone to like you, or working for these things just for the bragging rights will leave you really disappointed. People are impressed by those who aren’t trying to impress them and are comfortable in themselves and social and interesting. Sometimes to be “interesting” all you have to do is be a good listener. 20. People are not alone in being alone: No matter how lonely you might feel, there is always someone who can relate to you. Perhaps you can’t talk to them right now, but they are out there. 21. Love isn’t “all” you need, but if you don’t have it in some form, your life will be very empty: We don’t need love to survive, but without it there will be a huge hole inside you. Make sure that every day you have someone (family, friends, lover) to remind you that you are special. If you postpone this part of your life until later, after you get or do that thing you want to do, you will continue in that lonely path indefinitely. 22. The most important lessons in life can never be expressed in black and white, but must be experienced: The most important things in life are very hard to put in black and white, including what I’ve said in this post. When most of the world’s information is at our fingertips, a mouse click away, it makes it feel like we don’t need to experience any more. This is false. Experience is the greatest teacher of all. Stop reading about or watching the world passively and start living it.
