The Official Quarterly Newsletter for the American Kinesiotherapy Association Mobility “At a Glance” Greetings! Spring is here and with its arrival marks the end of a long and cold record- breaking winter. I am sure you all are ready for the warmer days ahead, I know I am! The Executive Board is well on its way to making plans for another great year. This is an exciting and productive time for the Association. For the last several months, the Executive Board has been "off and running" devoting much of their time to the constant planning, organizing and creation of goals that will provide the membership with another exceptional year of continued professional development. We are now handling several major items of importance that prove to have a profound effect on our Association and clinicians of the future. First and foremost, our major focus is to continue our efforts towards obtaining licensure in Virginia. There have been numerous meetings with the Virginia Board of Health Professions the past several months regarding the proper protocols and processes needed to achieve our goal. This has been a long, strenuous process and the Executive Board would like to thank Gary Bolden, Michael Minor, Henry Jackson, Jon Vonderhaar and all those involved for all their hard work, effort and dedication towards this endeavor. This could be groundbreaking for KTs across the nation and we will keep you posted with our progress. To ensure that the goals and objectives of the American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA) and Council on Professional Standards (COPS-KT) are achieved during the 2010-11 fiscal year, a strategic action plan has been developed. This Strategic Plan comes at an extraordinary time for the AKTAa time of unprecedented opportunities for growth as well as major challenges to development. The current economic crisis, changes in organizational culture, increasing focus on state licensure, job availability and sustainability will greatly affect the future of the AKTA. We are at a critical juncture. The decisions we make today and in the next few years will ensure that that the AKTA will continue to progress in a positive direction and have a better opportunity for continuous success. Ensuring a bright future will require solidarity of the executive board and COPS-KT, strong membership support and sound financial structures. It will also require the AKTA to continuously search for innovative practices and ideas in order to render the best services possible throughout the continuum of care and to improve the quality of life for the clients we serve. The AKTA’s Strategic Plan aims to serve and engage the full breadth of AKTA’s membership—public and private, large and small. Furthermore, it will provide the Executive Board an objective approach to effectively serve the interests of the membership, enhance the standard of care and to successfully achieve our goals. As I continue my tenure as president of the AKTA, I will continue to focus on the goals established by JT and the previous administration as well as establish new ones. The planning process was guided by the input of executive board, previous executive board members and you, the membership. The resultant plan is a tribute to the efforts of those involved and reflects their knowledge, expertise and dedication to our association. Continued Page 2. Mobility “At a Glance”

Greetings! Spring is here and with its arrival marks the end of a long and cold record-breaking winter. To ensure that the goals and objectives of the American Kinesiotherapy Association (AKTA) and Council on

Professional Standards (COPS-KT) are achieved during the 2010-11 fiscal year, a strategic action plan has

been developed. This Strategic Plan comes at an extraordinary time for the AKTA—a time of

unprecedented opportunities for growth as well as major challenges to development. The current

economic crisis, changes in organizational culture, increasing focus on state licensure, job availability and

sustainability will greatly affect the future of the AKTA.

We are at a critical juncture. The decisions we make today and in the next few years will ensure that that

the AKTA will continue to progress in a positive direction and have a better opportunity for continuous

success. Ensuring a bright future will require solidarity of the executive board and COPS-KT, strong

membership support and sound financial structures. It will also require the AKTA to continuously search for

innovative practices and ideas in order to render the best services possible throughout the continuum of

care and to improve the quality of life for the clients we serve. The AKTA’s Strategic Plan aims to serve and

engage the full breadth of AKTA’s membership—public and private, large and small. Furthermore, it will

provide the Executive Board an objective approach to effectively serve the interests of the membership,

enhance the standard of care and to successfully achieve our goals.

Eleven strategic goals have been created and will constitute the major issues to be addressed by the strategic planning process over the next year. These goals include: Goal #1- Continue work in establishing and obtaining state Licensure. Goal #2- Finalize the establishment and launch the Centers of Excellence. Goal #3- Facilitate the creation of a Research Project Program (RPP) to increase research in targeted

areas that could strongly enhance clinical decision making and delivery of Kinesiotherapy at the point of care.

Goal #4- To update all Public Relations (PR) and promotional materials in order to be in line with the current state of the AKTA.

Goal #5- To re-establish AKTA committees. Goal #6- To complete AKTA documentation guidelines and distribute to the membership accordingly. Goal #7- Continue to work towards obtaining KT specific CPT or HCPCS level II codes. Goal #8- Continue to work on the revisions of the KT Qualification Standards within the VAMC. Goal #9- Continue to pursue and push for inclusion of KT into various new and ongoing VA directives

and initiatives. Goal #10- Continue to find ways to increase employment opportunities within the public and private

sectors. Goal #11- Define Specializations and Standards and to establish credentialing bodies for areas of

specialization. The foundation of our vision for the future is for substantial gains in formal recognition of our profession. We feel that these goals are straightforward and readily identifiable. We are committed to our principles, committed to our goals and committed to accomplishing our mission. I am confident that with the assistance of the Executive Board, the Council on Professional Standards and you the membership, we can make these and any other goals a reality. A friend of mine once informed me of professional pride. He believed that it is a necessary ingredient to making a strong cohesive association and I must agree. It is this professional pride, the faith we have in our organization and the devotion we bring to this endeavor that will help us achieve these goals. Thank you Robert Ordonez, RKT, MPA AKTA President

The Institute of Health and Human Performance (IHHP), is a non-patient based organization that provides companies with proven proprietary cost containment services that reduce OSHA recordable injuries and accidents while meeting human and industrial wellbeing, ergonomic, safety and environmental standards. There passion is to help people prevent injuries, work without discomfort and be more productive at work and home. Their mission is to provide businesses with proactive solutions to reduce soaring health care and workers’ compensation costs that are fueled by employee injuries, accidents and the overall poor health of a staggering percentage of employees. IHHP has years of experience working specifically with distribution, food processing, manufacturing and utility companies including UPS, Exelon, Hilton Hotels, Pepsi and Disney. IHHP helps these companies with the myriad of job tasks they require in the warehouse, plant and office setting. They have developed time-sensitive, affordable, easy-to-implement solutions with proven sustainability and results that have consistently met or exceeded their clients projected ROI. IHHP’s staff includes a Kinesiotherapist, athletic trainers as well as certified injury prevention specialists to implement their exercise-based injury prevention programs. These programs utilize the methodologies of warming up, strengthening and actively stretching to reduce employees’ aches and pains as well as reduce their risk of injury. These are the same programs and tools that have been used by professional athletes to prepare themselves for optimal performance. Leading IHHP is Jon Kabance, RKT, their president, who brings over a decade of experience working with athletes, performing artists and workers in helping them not only reduce their risk of injury but also to help them enhance their performance. Jon’s vision is to use the pillars of Kinesiotherapy, exercise and education, to provide corporate America the necessary programs to maintain their competitiveness by reducing costs associated with employee injuries that go straight to their bottom line. These programs include: 90 Second Warm Up Program™ - effectively warming up the upper body in 90 Seconds

September 6-10, 2010 is KT Week. The National Office is asking

that all KT’s, do whatever they can, to promote KT and our

services to their co- workers and community. As down sizing in

the medical profession and VA continues, it is becoming more

critical that all those involved with rehabilitative services

become more aware of who we are and what we can do.

POSSIBLE WAYS TO CELEBRATE KT WEEK

1. Hold an Open House in your clinic area and invite the hospital or facility administration, staff, veteran’s groups, patient’s families, local personality and/or government officials.

2. Offer a fitness challenge among the different areas in your facility.

3. Provide a fitness screening to all employees (e.g. blood pressure, BMI, etc.)

4. Present a 30 - 45 minute lecture, seminar or question and answer period that highlights KT history or KT at your station, topics on fitness or specific exercise programs. 5. Present a case study on a particular patient being treated by KT to the rehab service. 6. Set up an informational booth and or picture display in a high traffic area of the hospital or facility.

7. Inform your local park district, community center, fitness clubs, nursing homes, etc. in your area about KT Week. Offer to make a presentation.

8. Present an award or a T-shirt to: A. A patient receiving KT who has made great strides in his rehab or fitness program. B. Director or Medical Center staff that have been supportive of KT. 9. Contact local radio stations, newspapers and television talk shows. Develop a feature story about the history of Kinesiotherapy, its philosophies and services. 10. Single out some special people, accomplishments or programs that have been a source of pride at

your facility. Highlight the services you provide. A. Highlight some special qualities of your facility. Emphasize anything that sets it apart from others. B. Develop a story about a before and after case representing a success story. These are only a few ideas. We will be holding a competition for any AKTA member who submits a summary of events with photos to [email protected] by September 17th. The top two ideas incorporated will receive a free KT T-shirt.

The KT Connection

Terry Schmitz On December 30, 2009 Terry Schmitz retired after 37 years of Federal Service. Terry completed his tenure at Long Beach VAMC as the Clinical Trainer for Kinesiotherapy and the Kinesiotherapy wheelchair cushion specialist. Ultimately, he spent his last working hours in the SCI clinic, which he favored over all other clinics. It should be noted that all the younger staff at Long Beach VAMC are former students of Terry’s and their exemplary performance as Kinesiotherapists was a direct result of Terry’s teaching and training. Terry’s students were always in high demand as his clinical training program to this day was considered one of the best in the nation. There are also a large number of healthy “pink butts” pushing and rolling around the Long Beach VA hospital and in homes all over southern California due to Terry’s diligence and perseverance in creating wheelchair cushions for our veteran patients that have provided the best pressure relief available in today’s wheelchair cushion arena. In 1972 Terry completed the clinical training program at the Long Beach VAMC and in April of 1973 he became a staff therapist at the Des Moines, Iowa VA hospital. In November of 1973 Terry returned as a staff therapist to Long Beach. He didn’t leave Iowa empty handed as he brought back with him, Sue, who he married on March 1, 1974. Terry and Sue went on to have two children, a son Christopher and a daughter, Kelly. Throughout his career Terry spent his time away from the hospital competing in many marathons and triathlons. We wish Terry the very best as he is just beginning his retirement journey.

James E. Hadley James E. Hadley, RKT, a US Army Veteran himself, worked for the Southern Arizona VA Healthcare System for more than 20 years. He was a senior member of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and specialized in all levels of amputee care. He was also heavily involved in the Major Medical Special Equipment Committee (MMSEC) and Pressure Mapping program. Outside the VA his love of family, life, passion for horses, and all things outdoors enabled him to maintain physical fitness and serve as an example for others to follow. His knowledge, experience, dedication, and compassion for his fellow veterans is sorely missed.
