Conclusion
Answers written in the margins will not be marked.
[model answer]
The winter teaching programme this year took place from 1st to 28th February. Twenty volunteers were recruited
to teach children in Yunnan.
Survey findings show that 90% of the volunteers who participated in the programme thought that the programme
was valuable, and more than three-fourths (78%) of them were happy with the programme. Also, 85% of them
would recommend the programme to their friends.
To improve the programme, it is suggested that we prepare lesson plans in advance so that volunteers would not
repeat lessons. We could also let volunteers prepare their food and organise leisure activities for them.
The teaching programme has been popular with volunteers, and we would implement the recommended actions
in next year’s teaching programme [DF 2] to improve it.

Haven’t got any ideas what to do this summer? Why don’t you join the teaching programme organised by Sunshine
Charity?
Founded by Sam Wong [DF 4] in 2013, [DF 3] Sunshine Charity is a registered, self-funding charity. [DF 3] The
teaching programme is one of Sunshine’s attempts to achieve its goal of helping the underprivileged in remote areas
in Asia. [DF 4]
From 4th to 31st July, [DF 5] 20 lucky volunteers [DF 5] will have a chance to teach children [DF 3] in Yunnan. [DF 5]
Volunteers who have joined our programme before loved the programme. They thought it was a good chance to
learn to interact with people from a different background. A few of them even enjoyed the life in a village, which was
very different from that in Hong Kong.
Why hesitate when you could join up to take part in this meaningful programme? Come and join us today!

Next year’s programmes
[Source: DF 1, 2, 6, 7 & 8]
This memo serves to give you a brief idea of the programmes we are planning for the coming year. [DF 2]
First, we are planning a clean water programme [DF 6] in Cambodia. [DF 7] We are sure we will have an improved
programme based on this year’s experience. [DF 6] However, since Dr Gong, the geologist who volunteered to help
us this year, will return to the US next year, we will need to find another geologist who is willing to volunteer. [DF 6]
The second one is a sanitation and disease prevention programme, [DF 6] which will be held in India. [DF 6] This
programme will require a lot of medical professionals. [DF 8]
Lastly, we will continue with our popular teaching programme. [DF 6] Apart from having the programme in Guizhou
(China), [DF 1] we would expand the programme to Nepal. [DF 1] And for the Nepal programme, we will need to
offer language classes to our volunteers before it starts. [DF 1]
If you have any ideas or suggestions on how to implement or improve the programmes, you are most welcome to
contact me. [DF 2]

Volunteering benefits everyone
It has long been known that voluntary work benefits people around the world by giving materials like water, food
and clothes to the needy, or by providing education. It also makes beneficiaries feel that they are remembered and
cared for.
However, it is not just the ones that are helped who benefit from acts of goodwill, it is believed also that volunteers
themselves benefit from them too. Many volunteers think that volunteering broadens their horizons [DF 9] and gives
them a sense of accomplishment. [DF 11] It also provides an opportunity for them to meet new people and make
friends with them. [DF 11] Research also shows that volunteers tend to be happier. [DF 11]
Volunteering may also help with job hunting since employers prefer candidates with volunteer experience over those
without any experience. [DF 9] Employers find that people with volunteer experience are more proactive. [DF 1] They
are also more well rounded, [DF 1] and thus tend to be better team players. [DF 1]
So why not get started volunteering today? You could sign up on the Volunteer Movement website
(www.volunteering-hk.org) or look for causes you support and sign up to serve as a volunteer. Act now!
