What is a Mock Up?

A mock up is a physical translation of an interior designer’s dream into reality. A mock up is produced so that everyone involved in the project can actually walk through and explore the newly designed model room before commencing with the specifications in order to assure complete satisfaction.

The mock up provides designers, operators, and of course owners, the opportunity to review all aspects of the room in person and enables them to make alterations or to further customize the mock up room with any additional modifications to achieve a final sample room, that is fully approved, problem-free, and repeatable.

How Does Hotelier Build Mock Ups Differently?

Stage #1 - What Am I Going To Get?Hotelier takes the complete interior design package from the design office, including all samples, colors, designs, etc. We use whatever we can that will bring us closer to the interior designer’s concept. We then select the most recurring type of room in the project (for example, a standard room) and build a full shell of this room on-site, including walls, ceiling, bathroom, and corridor. Next, we finish the room in full, from floor to ceiling incorporating all aspects of the interior design package, including flooring, wall treatments, window treatments, furniture, doors, lighting, artwork and decor, electronics, accessories, fabrics, and even guest amenities.

Once complete, the interior designer and operator fly in for review and suggestions, assess engineering and discuss all the required modifications (there are usually many). Hotelier’s dedicated project engineer takes all of the notes and efficiently leads his team to execute all the necessary modifications, and in less than 4 days, modifications are successfully finished. Modifications are typically accomplished prior to the arrival of the owner or owner representative at the Back Yard Studio. Once there, they will have the opportunity to review the mock up room in person to make any final changes. All items and designs in the room can be felt, touched, tested, and sampled in person.

At this point, we will all have a final mock up that is fully approved by the owner, operator, and designer. Everyone involved will sign the approved samples.A professional photographer will take detailed photos of all items and designs on-site and take general photos of the so-called sample room for documentation, presentation, and marketing purposes.

Stage #2 - When Am I GoingTo Get It?The project team will move to the conference room where a full-scale schedule presentation is demonstrated to be reviewed by all, showing each item, manufacturing time, packing options, shipping options, and the installation process and timing (i.e. from that meeting time to the soft opening moment). All timelines can be discussed and decided upon, including scheduling, shipping, installation processes, and opening times. In addition, this meeting provides a good opportunity for the interior designer to revise the electrical, plumbing, and ceiling plans, as per the mock up modifications, and if necessary, to advise other contractors on-site.

Stage #3 - How Much Is It Going To Cost? There is another presentation that discusses cost, where clients experience a full review of the cost of each item, quantity of item, and total value, including category cost, detailing how much items in each category costs in the project, such as fabrics, furniture, wallpapers, carpet, etc.

All prices can be discussed and items can be altered to bring down the cost of the project (for instance, if clients decide to change more expensive marble in the bathroom to a similar looking porcelain, they can see the bathroom designed in both versions before making a final decision).

In total, the process is like fine-tuning a radio, but three-dimensional in quality, time, and cost, with no estimations, just actual figures.

How Long Does a Mock Up Take?

A mock up takes 45 days from the time Hotelier receives a final confirmed interior design package.

How Much Does a Mock Up Cost?

The cost varies according to how many mock ups are needed, and the size and specifications required, however, if the project involves more than one hundred rooms then one mock up is fully refundable from the project cost.

Should We Make The Mock Up On-Site Instead of in China?

Constructing a mock up on-site is a common practice that we have been executing for a long time. Building the mock up room on-site provides the owner with the best possible room, but building the mock up room at Hotelier China, in the factory, provides the owner with the exact room the owner wants, no compromises required.

To clarify, if you make the mock up room on-site, the majority of the products will most likely be imported (typically from China), and locally made products are often manufactured in factories far from the project site. If you require any change in color, size, texture, etc., you will have to select from a catalogue sample of alternatives, especially for items such as wallpaper, carpeting, some of the fabrics, wood color, lighting size, and bathroom accessory finishes. The list of modifications for a 5 star room will be quite lengthy, and no one will know exactly how the changes in the finished room will look.

In comparison, by choosing to create the mock up room at Hotelier China, you will have full control over options; all of the factories are minutes away, and you can orchestrate the teams to get the exact room that you are looking for. The modifications process will be more efficient as you will have the opportunity to personally look around all of the factories to check the quality of the manufacturing. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to explore our massive showroom, which is the largest in the world, to view in person, the various new ideas for modern hotels.

What If We Wish To Have One Mock Up On-Site?

Absolutely, no problem, if you need to have another mock up done on-site, it will then be called a sample room, not a mock up, since we will ship a duplicate of the fully approved mock up to the site, that will not require any more modifications.
