STANDARD COLOUR SCHEME OF METALLIC MATERIELS
FOR AEROSPACE APPLICATIONS
SECTION 1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
0 INTRODUCTION
0.1 This colour scheme was devised for the colour code identification of those metallic
materials in RAF stores vocabulary sections 30A, 30B and 30E, which are intended for
aerospace application and are supplied to Service units or establishments directly or through
the Royal Air Force Storage Depot. It also includes non-aerospace metallic materials in RAF
stores vocabulary sections 30C and 30D.
0.2 Although intended primarily for direct Government contracts for metallic materials,
the scheme may also be used as a secondary means of identification by Contractors at their
own works.
0.3 This standard does not override any requirement for overall identification by ink or other marking on the product, or use of a durable label when required by the relevant material
or technical standard. Colour coding shall be used in the absence of any other method of
marking or when called up by the contract.
1 SCOPE
1.1 This standard sets out a standard scheme for the colour code identification of
metallic materials intended for aerospace applications.
1.2 The colour codes listed in Annexes A and B are appropriate to the contents of the
RAF stores vocabulary sections 30A to 30E inclusive. Codes for similar standards andalloys are included as well as codes for, principally, the AECMA aerospace aluminium
alloy and steel standards and alloys which are potential replacements for the British
Standards ‘L’, ‘S’ and ‘T’ series and which are likely to be used on new designs.
1.3 Colour codes do not reflect the issue status of any standard.

SECTION 1 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
2 WARNING
The Ministry of Defence (MOD), like its contractors, is subject to both United Kingdom
and European laws regarding Health and Safety at Work, without exemption. All DefenceStandards either directly or indirectly invoke the use of processes and procedures that could
be injurious to health if adequate precautions are not taken. Defence Standards or their use
in no way absolves users from complying with statutory and legal requirements relating to
Health and Safety at Work.
3 RELATED DOCUMENTS
3.1 The publications shown below are referred to in the text of this standard. Publications
are grouped and listed in alpha numeric order.
Designation Title
BS 381C Specification for Colours for Identification, Coding and Special
Purposes
BS 3488 Specification for Technical Anhydrous Lanolin
Def Stan 03-2 Cleaning and Preparation of Metal Surfaces
Def Stan 80-54 Paint, Finishing, General Service Gloss Types: Brushing, Spraying
3.2 Reference in this standard to any related document means in any invitation to tender
or contract the edition and all amendments current at the date of such tender or contract
unless a specific edition is indicated.
3.3 In consideration of 3.2 above, users shall be fully aware of the issue and amendment
status of all related documents, particularly when forming part of an invitation to tender or
contract. Responsibility for the correct application of standards rests with users.
3.4 DStan can advise regarding where related documents are obtained from. Requests for
such information can be made to the DStan Helpdesk. How to contact the helpdesk is
shown on the outside rear cover of Def Stans.
3.5 It was not considered practical to include in 3.1 a full list of the document numbers
and titles of those standards referenced in the annexes.
4 DESCRIPTION
The colour code scheme is a means of rapid identification of material, additional to the
requirements of the material specification or technical standard, and shall not be used as the
sole means of identification.

5
SECTION 2 REQUIREMENTS OF A COLOUR CODE SCHEME
5 COLOUR CODE
The supplier and user shall ensure that only one colour code scheme is used and that it
complies with the requirements of this standard.
6 CONTRACTUAL REQUIREMENTS
6.1 The criteria for deciding whether or not an item (i.e. sheet, bar, tube, rod) as issued to
user units, requires to be colour coded individually, and hence supplied to the RAF
similarly marked, depends on the Denomination of Quantity (D of Q). It is therefore
important that the supplier delivers goods identified in the correct manner. Goods not
supplied in accordance with the contract shall not be accepted.
6.2 Except as allowed by 6.1 and 13.3, every piece of material ordered for use by Service
units or establishments shall be individually colour code marked in accordance with thisstandard, even though the material may have been bundled and given a bulk final
identification by the manufacturer.
7 EYESIGHT
Many people are lacking colour discrimination and users of this standard shall therefore
ensure that only those with eyesight free from this defect are directly concerned with the
identification of colour coded materials.
8 OVERALL MARKING
Overall marking by a suitable printing process giving the specification and condition is
preferred to colour coding. When overall marking is used it shall comply with the
requirements of the material standard. Overall marking shall only be used when the surface
condition is receptive to the printing and if such marking is durable under normal storage
conditions. In order to permit re-marking of material with particulars of the specification
and condition after re-heat treatment, ink shall be of a type which is obliterated by heat and
which does not etch the surface.

SECTION 3 APPLICATION OF A COLOUR CODE SCHEME
9 ALLOY, PRODUCT AND DELIVERY CONDITIONS
9.1 Alloy type
The alloy provides distinguishing features by virtue of its density or colour, i.e.:
a. Light alloys - aluminium, magnesium and titanium alloys;
b. Heavy alloys - steel or nickel and cobalt and their alloys (also some cupro-
nickel alloys of a silver-grey colour);
c. Copper and its alloys (as they are usually distinctively coloured materials in
themselves).
Different alloys in a similar product form may, therefore, be given the same colour code, e.g.
the following sheet products are colour coded “brown”:
aluminium alloy BS L166 (Clad 2014A-F)steel BS EN 3526 * (FE-PM1505 Annealed)copper alloy BS EN 1652: CW004A/H065
* NOTE: May only be available as an AECMA Prestandard (prEN) at the time of
publication of this standard. AECMA prENs are valid documents, accepted as being
technically finalised and usable in contracts, when published on green paper.
9.2 Product form
The product form also provides a distinguishing feature, i.e. bar type products (e.g. rolled bar or section, including rectangular bar), flat products (e.g. plate, sheet or strip), tube or
wire.
Different product forms of the same alloy or alloy type may, therefore, be given the same
colour code, e.g. the following are colour coded “black-yellow-blue”:
aluminium alloy bar - BS EN 2632 (AL-P7075-T73511)*aluminium alloy sheet - BS EN 485 (EN AW-1200-H16)aluminium alloy tube - BS EN 2073 (AL-P1050A-H14) *aluminium alloy wire - BS EN 1301 (EN AW-3103-F)
* See note to 9.1.

SECTION 3 APPLICATION OF A COLOUR CODE SCHEME
9.3 Delivery condition
Certain materials differing only in surface condition or intended usage and, which are in the
same metallurgical delivery condition and have the same mechanical properties, are giventhe same colour code, e.g. the following are colour coded “green-red-yellow”:
BS S82B - Black Bars for Machining (Softened)
BS S82D - Bright Bars for Machining (Softened)
Materials with the same specification number but different metallurgical delivery condition,
hence different mechanical properties have different colour codes, e.g.
BS S535 Chromium - molybdenum steel sheet (Softened) is colour coded “green-
brown-green” but:
BS S535 Chromium - molybdenum steel sheet (Hardened and tempered) is colour coded brown-blue-yellow”.
10 PRODUCTS NOT TO BE COLOUR CODED
10.1 Forging stock, forgings and castings
Colour codes are not allocated to forgings, forging stock or to castings in this standard.
10.2 Tool steel, filler rods, electrodes, welding rod and solder
Due to the form and varying packaging quantities of these materials, colour coding is notrequired. Materials supplied under these headings are to be identified by their respective
NATO stock number (NSN) using an appropriate method such as tagging.
10.3 Expanded Metal, Perforated Sheet, Gauze and Honeycomb
Due to the form of these materials colour coding is not required. Materials provided in
these forms are to be identified by their respective NATO stock number (NSN) using an
appropriate method such as tagging.
11 REVERSAL OF COLOUR CODE
Colour codes shall be selected such that any one code shall not be confused with its reverse
order counterpart, i.e. for colour code “green-red-yellow” the reverse order “yellow-red-
green” shall not be permitted as a code.

SECTION 3 APPLICATION OF A COLOUR CODE SCHEME
12 COLOURS
12.1 The colours black, blue, brown, green, red, white and yellow are used. These colours
are given the numerical values 1 to 7 shown in Table 1. The numerical code aids presentation in the annexes.
12.2 In order that colour marking shall be as permanent as possible, especially where
material has to be stocked in the open, the use of paint to specification Def Stan 80-54 is
recommended. The most distinct shades, which have been selected, are given in Table 1.

13 APPLICATION OF COLOUR CODE MARKINGS
13.1 Before painting the colour code temporary protectives shall be removed from the area
of application using solvents complying with Def Stan 03-2.
13.2 Materials shall be marked, with the first colour painted on the outside edge/end/corner
as follows:
13.2.1 Bars and tubes
Each bar and tube shall be painted at both ends with the stipulated colour or colours in the
following widths:
a. For one colour - 1 band 200 mm wide
b. For two colours - 2 bands each 100 mm wide
c. For three colours - 3 bands each 75 mm wide

DEF STAN 05-69/3
9
SECTION 3 APPLICATION OF A COLOUR CODE SCHEME
13.2.1 (Continued)
d. For four colours - 4 bands each 50 mm wide
e. For five colours - 5 bands each 35 mm wide
13.2.2 Plate, sheet and strip
One of the following methods is to be used:
a. A band or bands of the required colours are to be painted on each plate, sheet
or strip diagonally across one corner. The corner which bears identification
stamp marks shall be selected if that is the means by which the material is
identified. The width of the band or bands shall be in accordance with 13.2.1
and painting is to commence 150 mm from the corner measured at right
angles to the length of the band. Sheets and strips less than 300 mm wide
shall be painted at one end in a similar manner to bars. Identification stampmarks shall not be obscured.
b. Alternatively, each plate sheet or strip shall be painted with a disc. For a
single colour the disc shall be 75 mm in diameter, additional colours, when
required, shall be applied in concentric rings 35 mm wide.
c. For large-scale production of plate, sheet and flat strip, the product may be
stacked and then slid endwise, so that 35-40 mm of the end of each product is
exposed (in addition to the whole surface of the top plate, sheet or strip).
Bands of paint of the same length as the width required by 13.2.1 shall then
be painted on the products in one operation, resulting in an identification
mark on each plate, sheet or strip. The colours shall be applied to the face of the plate, sheet or strip which bears the identification marks and preferably
adjacent to them, if that is the means by which the material is identified.
d. Laminated shim material
e. Due to the manufactured form of this material, the appropriate colour code is
to be applied to one surface only. The colour coded surface is to be used for
reference for the whole sheet and it is therefore essential that the colour
coded surface is the last sheet to be used.
f. Wires and rods (as defined by the material specification) The required
colours shall be painted in bands on the side of each bundle and the outer
turns of each coil. The band or bands shall be at right angles to the wires or
rods and shall not be less than 75 mm total width, e.g. one band 75 mm wideor 3 bands 25 mm wide. The paint marks shall extend at least halfway round
the bundle of wires or rods at the selected part of the coil.
13.3 If the supplier wishes to use suitable coloured adhesive tape for identification, the
tapes shall be compatible with the material to be identified. When tape is used, it is
preferred that the complete code is contained on a single tape and each colour is not less
than 15 mm wide. Where individual tapes are to be used, their widths shall be:

12/40
DEF STAN 05-69/3
10
SECTION 3 APPLICATION OF A COLOUR CODE SCHEME
13.3 (Continued)
a. Single colour - 50 mm wide
b.
Two colours - 30 mm wide per colour c. Three colours - 25 mm wide per colour
d. Four colours - 20 mm wide per colour
e. Five colours - 15 mm wide per colour
For the identification of bar, section, tube, rod or wire, the adhesive tape shall go a
minimum of 1½ times around the individual piece or bundle as appropriate.
13.4 The bar, section, tube, etc may be required to be protected by a suitable preservative,
e.g lanolin complying with BS 3488, which shall not obscure the colour code. The
protective shall be removable by a solvent referenced in Def Stan 03-2.
Where it is a contractual requirement to apply colour code identification, the appropriate
colours shall be applied in the order given. The first colour shall be applied nearest that end
or corner of the material which bears the stamped identification, if that is the means by
which the material is identified.

NOTES
1 Some of the BS EN 2XXX, 3XXX and 4XXX series may only be available
as an AECMA Prestandard (prEN) at the time of publication of this standard.AECMA prENs are valid documents, accepted as being technically finalised and
usable in contracts, when published on green paper. Those listed in this standard are
potential replacements, singly or in conjunction with other(s), for current BS ‘HR’,
‘L’, ‘S’, ‘T’ and ‘TA’ series standards.
2 The abbreviations used in the annexes are generally those designations
used in the relevant material standards. This particularly applies to those used to
describe ‘Temper’. However, in a number of instances, especially for materials in
the BS EN 10xxx series of steel standards, the designation relates to the specified
delivery condition and not to the normal understanding of ‘temper’. Other
abbreviations should be self-evident.
