FROM THE PRINCIPAL Student Success Congratulations to Maddison Bailey and Marcus Loy for being part of a Children’s Show that has been nominated for a Mo Award. This is the third year in a row that their Dance studio has been nominated and if they win, it will be the second time they have taken out the prize. Their dance troupe performs their shows at different venues and events around Sydney and this has helped both dancers develop their art form. Good luck. France Trip Last Thursday morning some of our staff, students and parents met at Sydney airport to start their journey to Paris where they will spend the next few weeks taking in the sights and sounds of France. This excited group was at last on their way on a trip that has been many months in the making. An enormous amount of planning, organising and coordination by the teachers, commitment from the parents and support of family and friends was required to bring it all to fruition. The documentation that is required for overseas trips is phenomenal and all credit must go to Mr Birrell and Ms Hietamaki for pulling that all together. I look forward to seeing their photos on Facebook and hearing their stories when they return. A new Deputy Principal for the Farms I would like to formally congratulate Ms Jennifer Pledger on gaining promotion on merit as the new Deputy Principal of Model Farms High School. Ms Pledger was successful after a highly competitive process and brings with her new and fresh ideas that she will be able to initiate in her new role. Ms Pledger is passionate about professional development of staff, increasing the IT capacity of both staff and students and will begin work on our BYOD policy to lead us into 2015. Ms Pledger will be responsible for the welfare and discipline of Years 7, 9 & 11 and will follow these year groups through to their eventual graduation from the Farms. She has big shoes to fill following Mark Anderson’s leadership but we wish her well and look forward to seeing the fruits of her ideas.

FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL… MR GRADY Essays due soon? Learning how to plan, write and polish an essay is a skill that takes a long time for most people to learn. Different types of essays follow different rules of structure. If your teen is currently working on an essay, you’ll find this video (and the links to fact sheets on the right hand side of the page) really useful in explaining the “how to” of essay writing as it’s taught in NSW public schools: http://bit.ly/1lji1mZ Anzac Day Ceremony On Friday 11 April, the school held our Anzac Day commemorative Service. Anzac Day is one of Australia’s most important national commemorative occasions. It marks the anniversary of the first major military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War. With the coming of the Second World War, Anzac Day also served to commemorate the lives of Australians who died in that war. The meaning of Anzac Day today includes the remembrance of all Australians killed in military operations. I would like to thank all students and staff involved in the organisation and delivery of this service. Important Term 2 Assessment Dates Year 11 Exams Commence Wednesday 30 April Year 10 Exams Commence Monday 5 May Year 8 Exams Commence Monday 12 May Year 9 Exams Commence Monday 19 May Year 7 Exams Commence Monday 26 May The School Oval Recently, the repair to the oval goal posts was completed, to the joy of many of our students. The SRC is currently investigating ways to share this resource amongst lunchtime users in a fair and equitable manner. All we need now is the weather to be kind, so students can access one of the sporting features of our school.
I would like to wish everyone a safe, relaxing and enjoyable break and look forward to a great Term 2 at The Farms. Have a wonderful week, Mark Grady Deputy Principal

FROM THE FACULTY THAT COUNTS
Congratulations to the following Maths merit recipients: Year 7 Joshua Paine. Year 8 Bilel Arab, Scarlet Foster, Chelsea Froggatt, Amir Hashemi Pour. Year 10 Emily Duncan This Week’s News Term 1 has been very busy in the Maths Faculty and we have packed an amazing amount of work into these 11 weeks. Term 2 will be another busy term as we have NAPLAN for Years 7 and 9, and also the Half Yearly Examinations. Your child will have the dates and details in their workbook. We would like to take this opportunity to wish all of our students and their families a very happy and safe Easter holiday period. Australian Mathematics Competition: Notes have been issued to students for the 2014 Australian Mathematics Competition. This supplements the Gifted and Talented work being done in the classroom. It costs $5 and the money is to be paid to the school by Friday 11th April. The competition will be held on Thursday 7th August 2014. If your child has not received a note and they want to sit the examination, please ask them to speak to their Maths teacher. Calculators: Please make sure that all students have their own calculator. The Casio fx-82AU is sold at the uniform shop for $35. Different brands of scientific calculators work differently and it is important that everyone in a class has the same calculator. Students need this calculator from Year 7. It is vital for their progress that students are familiar with their calculator and know how to use the different functions.
Fun with Maths: If you are interested in having a Mathematical Easter Egg hunt at your house this year, here is a link to how to organise one. It includes the questions. Happy Easter !! http://www.morethanmaths.com/teacher/2011/04/03/easter-egg-hunt-2011/ Have a Mathematical week, From Jackie Dalton and the Maths Faculty Staff

ISV – International Student Volunteering
e part of the Model Farms High School International Student Volunteering and Adventure program to travel in January 2015!
The school has limited places available for students who would like to travel overseas and participate in a volunteering project. A representative from ISV will be pattending the school in Week 3 Term 2 to talk to Years 10 and 11 about the program and the chosen destination. ISV volunteers are responsible for the growth and development of a worldwide program that is making a difference changing lives, increasing awareness and compassion, and removing boundaries between people from very different walks of life. I invite you to join ISV, and have the experience of a lifetime. I promise you, this program has the potential to change your life and the lives of those you work with in ways you cannot imagine. With ISV, you will become a valued part of the community where you volunteer, and travel with like-minded students, experiencing more on the ISV program than most people dream about in a lifetime. Whether you’re working in a children’s home, snorkelling on a coral reef, white-water rafting through a rainforest, or protecting endangered wildlife - ISV will challenge you, excite you and teach you in a safe and fun environment. We encourage students who are interested to talk to their parents about this opportunity of a lifetime and visit the ISV website www.isvolunteering.org for more information including costs. The student booklet is available to download from the website. The world is waiting for you! Mrs Lumley

FROM THE HSIE DEPARTMENT
Japanese student visit 2014 On Friday, 4th April the Year 11 Society and Culture class hosted a group of 27 Japanese exchange students who put on a mini Japanese “expo” in the school hall. They were joined by the year 11, 10 and 9 Japanese language classes. The Japanese students are spending a year living with students from Davidson High School in Frenchs Forest and came to Model Farms to provide our students with an invaluable cross cultural experience. After introductions we were treated to a traditional Japanese drum performance. The students then busied themselves with the expo, engaging in Yukata/Kimono wearing, Origami, Calligraphy, Kendama (a ‘cup and ball’ game) and Fukuwarai (a face memory game). Each activity was organised and run by a small group of ICET students. After the activities, a whole group game of jun-ken (scissors, paper, rock) battle was fought. There was then the opportunity for small groups to engage in informal interviews with Japanese students to test if the things they had learned about Japan in class were indeed true. Lunch was a sausage sizzle and delicious Japanese yakisoba prepared by the Japanese students. Once the day was complete, all students gathered to farewell the Japanese students as they departed on their bus. I’m sure many new friends were made and hopefully some of our students will be able to join the Japanese again at the URA discussion forum to be held in Term 2.
