PREFACE

The Digital Disk Recorder WJ-HD100 is designed for instal-lation in a surveillance system as a recording device utiliz-ing a large capacity hard disk. It records camera picturesin a field basis up to 960 hours when the longest time modeis applied. The picture quality is selected from among 10levels to meet the system requirements, as well as the field

rate is selected. Beside recording and playback, it featuresversatile interfaces with alarm sensors, CompactFlash card,RS-232C devices and PS •Data equipment. Setup windowsare provided with system setup, recording setup, alarmsetup and so forth.

FEATURES

• High quality still pictureStill pictures are compressed with JPEG and arerecorded on the disk. Picture quality and frame rate arepreset before recording.

• Tape replacement discardedThanks to the large disk capacity, the replacement ofrecord medium is no longer needed. Series operation ofthe plural units extends the recording capacity up to 16times of one unit’s.

• Easy access to the desired recordTime & Date search and alarm event search make easeof retrieve.

• Compact Flash card slot equippedThe stored picture on the disk can be copied to aCompactFlash card through the slot to browse them ona personal computer.

• Various alarm mode settingsPicture quality is set exclusively for alarm recordingbeside for the ordinary recording.Buzzer can be set to beep when an alarm input arises.The built-in motion detector is enabled or disabled togenerate an alarm beside physically connected sen-sors.

• Remote controlAn RS-232C port enables the recorder to communicatewith a personal computer or other RS-232C devices.A modular terminal is equipped to communicate withPS •Data devises among the RS-485 chain.

PRECAUTIONS

• Refer all work related to the installation of this productto qualified service personnel or system installers.

• Avoid condensation on the surface of the hard disk.Wait until the dew evaporates if any of the followingcase takes place.

The recorder is moved to a place significantly def-erent in temperature or humidity.The recorder is moved out from the air-conditionedroom.The recorder is placed in an extremely humidplace.The recorder is placed in a room where heater hasjust been turned on.

• Consumable partsContact your dealer for the replacement when the timecomes.

Built-in hard disk needs replacement after around30 000 hours of operation.Cooling fan also needs replacement after around 30 000 hours of operation.Backup battery has its lifetime of around five (5)years in an ordinary environment.

• Do not block the ventilation opening or slots on thecover.To prevent the appliance from overheating, place it atleast 5 cm (2 inches) away from the wall.

• Do not drop metallic parts through slots.This could permanently damage the appliance. Turnthe power off immediately and contact qualified servicepersonnel for service.

• Handle the appliance with care.Do not strike or shake, as this may damage the appli-ance.

• Fully charge up the backup battery.Keep the appliance turned on for at least 48 hours torecharge the backup battery. This procedure is neces-sary when using the appliance for the first time or afterit has been unplugged for a long time from the AC out-let. Insufficient charging of the battery may cause era-sure of settings if the AC power supply should fail.

• We recommend that you note down your settings andretain them. Power or battery failure may erase settingsyou entered.

• Do not expose the appliance to water or moisture, nortry to operate it in wet areas.

• Do not use strong or abrasive detergents when clean-ing the appliance body.Use a dry cloth to clean the appliance when it is dirty.When the dirt is hard to remove, use a mild detergentand wipe gently.

• Do not operate the appliance beyond its specified tem-perature, humidity or power source ratings.Do not use the appliance in an extreme environmentwhere high temperature or high humidity exists. Use theappliance at temperatures within +5 °C to +45 °C (41 °Fto 113 °F) and a humidity below 90 %.The input power source for this appliance is 120 V AC60 Hz.

i Memory Card Slot [MEMORY CARD]Open the lid to put the CompactFlash card in to or outfrom the slot. The card is used to store still pictures forbrowsing them on the personal computer.

o LCD Displays setup parameters while setting, and operatingstatus while recording or playing back.

!0 LCD Button [DISPLAY SELECT]There are five positions to press; up, down, left, rightand the center. Press the appropriate positions toselect desired parameter on the LCD.

!1 LCD Contrast Control [LCD CONTRAST]Adjust the contrast by rotating the control knob with asmall screw driver.

!2 Stop and Setup/ Escape Button [ STOP] [SETUP/ESC]Stops recording or playback by pressing this button inthe mode other than setting.Holding down this button for 2 seconds calls up setupmenus or escapes from the setup.Press this button to go one step back to the previousselection in the setup menu.

!3 Play button [5 PLAY]Press this button to start playback. The LED lights whileplaying back, and blinks while pausing or searching.

!4 Recording button [ REC]Press this button to start recording. The LED lights whilerecording, and blinks while alarm recording.

!5 to !8 are PLAY MODE SELECT buttons.

!5 Alarm search button [ALARM SEARCH]Press this button to search for desired record amongalarm log. The LED lights while searching.

!6 Step and Down button [STEP] [A / B C]Press this button to start playing back still pictures fieldby field. The LED lights while playing back.Press this button to move the cursor downward on themonitor while setting up.

!8 JogDial [Push – PAUSE] [SET]Press the JogDial to pause while playing back or torestart playback.Rotate the JogDial to access to the desired frame whilerewinding, fast-forward and playing back.Rotate the JogDial to search the oldest picture record-ed on the disk for playing back in chronological order.Rotate the JogDial to select the desired parameterwhile setting up.Press the JogDial to enter the selected parameter, andto move the cursor to the next position while setting up.Hold down the JogDial to copy still pictures to theCompactFlash card.

@1 Audio Input [AUDIO] [IN]An RCA standard jack accepts a line input audio signalof unbalanced –10 dB and 10 kΩ supplied from anexternal device.

@2 Audio Output [AUDIO] [OUT]An RCA standard jack supplies a line output audio sig-nal of unbalanced –10 dB and 600 Ω to an externaldevice.

@3 Camera Switching Output [CAMERA SW OUT]Connect this BNC with an external device such as avideo multiplexer receiving plural camera inputs. Thisswitching signal lets the connected device switch froma camera to the other. Use this terminal only when therecording field rate is slower than 10 fps.

@4 Video Input [VIDEO] [IN]This BNC accepts a video signal supplied from a cam-era or video multiplexer. A 75 Ω termination is madeunless the video output terminal is connected.

@5 Video Output [VIDEO] [OUT]This BNC supplies a video signal looped through thevideo input terminal. Connect with a monitor TV tocheck the input picture.

@6 Monitor Output [MONITOR OUT (PLAY)]This BNC supplies playback pictures on the hard disk,or setup windows. Connect with a monitor TV.

@7 RS-232C Port [RS-232C]Through this 9-pin D-Sub connector the digital diskrecorder communicates with the personal computer.Use a reverse type cable for connection with the per-sonal computer.

@8 Data Port [DATA]Connect with equipment in the PS •Data chain or a sys-tem controller.

@9 Mode Switch [MODE]Use this switch for setting unit address, and initializingall contents on the disk and setups.

Externally connected switches control major operationson the front panel; Jog-Click, Jog-Left, Jog-Right, AlarmSearch, Step, Rew/FF, Stop/Setup, Play and REC.

#11 Time Adjust TerminalIN and OUT terminals are used to synchronize internalclock with externally connected device.

#22 Status Out TerminalStatus information is supplied to each terminal; Play,REC, Auto OFF and Disk End.

#33 Series Record TerminalConnect these terminals when plural hard disks areused in series and loop fashion.

#44 Alarm TerminalAlarm related information is supplied and receivedthrough these terminals; Alarm Recall In, Alarm Out,Recovery Out, Reset In and Alarm In.

#55 Cooling FanDo not block air flow through openings on both sidesthe top cover and this fan to avoid overheating the unit.

#66 Power Switch [POWER ON OFF]Turns on and off the power. The OPERATE indicator onthe front panel lights while the power switch is turnedon.

#77 Signal Ground [SIGNAL GND]Connect with other devices’ terminals to avoid ground-ing loop and noise if necessary.

INSTALLATION

This installation should be made by qualified service personnel or system installers.

Cauton notes regarding installation

Places to avoid

• Direct exposure to sunlight or near a source of heat such as a radiator.• Very dirty and dusty places. Places subject to strong vibrations.• Near transformer, dimmer, video player, radio and monitor. These may cause humming noises, etc.

Caution notes regarding mounting

• Do not block the ventilation openings or slots in the cover to prevent the appliance from overheating. • Always keep temperature in the rack within +45 °C (113 °F). • Secure the rear of the appliance to the rack by using additional mounting brackets (procured locally), if the rack is subject

to vibration.

Mounting in the Rack1. Remove the four rubber feet by removing the four

screws on the bottom of the unit.

2. Place the rack mounting brackets on both sides of theunit and tighten with the six supplied screws (M3 x10).

3. Install the unit with the rack mounting brackets in therack by using four screws (not included).

Connections With PS*Data Equipment

Communication setup is required for PS •Data equipment as follows.• Protocol selection: PS •DATA• Unit Address: Set an address unique in the chain.• Baud rate, data bit length, parity check, stop bit: Set the same values as other equipment using in the chain.

Recommended video multiplexers are Panasonic’s WJ-FS series or similar models having specifications as follows.• Switching recognition signal is located within 8H prior to the end of vertical blanking.• The camera switching allows to be slowed than 4/60 seconds.

Series ConnectionThis page shows an example that plural disk recorders are connected in series or loop for long time use, and with use of avideo multiplexer. 1. Plug the power cord in to the AC outlet.

2. Turn on the power switch on the rear panel.The operate LED lights, and the date, time and operat-ing status are displayed on the LCD.

Power-on recording will start if [EXT] is selected for [Timer Rec] with the LCD button.

Note: Avoid to turn the power on and off quickly. Takeat least a period of 5 seconds from off to on or viceversa.

Warning! The following are irrevocable procedures. Westrongly recommend that you copy important picturesfrom the hard disk to CF cards before initializing.

1. Open the SYSTEM INFORMATION window, then movethe cursor to DEFAULT.

2. Press the JogDial to move the cursor to SET.

3. Press the JogDial.

4. Select either YES or NO with the JogDial.

YES: Initializing the setups is enabled

5. Press the JogDial.SET DONE appears on the monitor after initializing.

6. Press the [SETUP/ESC] button.The cursor moves to DEFAULT.

Set the disk capacity from 1 % to 99 % to warn the operatorthat the available capacity is nearing to the end. There aretwo warning steps. The earlier one is that the FULL indica-tor on the front panel blinks when the remaining diskcapacity is lowered to the preset value. The final one is thatthe buzzer beeps when the disk comes to the full if theDISK END BUZZER is set to ON in the REC SETUP. TheFULL indicator will light.

1. Move the cursor to HDD FULL with [] or [] button.

2. Select the desired value with the JogDial. The defaultvalue is 1 %.

1 % to 99 %: The FULL indicator blinks when theremaining disk capacity comes to the selectedvalue.

Reset Pulse Polarity 106 RESET PULSEThe polarity of the alarm reset pulse is selected in theSYSTEM SETUP window.The reset pulse is supplied from the external devicewith high or low active signal form to the RESET termi-nal on the rear panel.

1. Open the system setup window, then move the cursorto RESET PULSE with the up [] or down [] button.

2. Select either HIGH or LOW with the JogDial. The defaultvalue is HIGH.

HIGH: Stands for high-active. The recorder stops alarmrecording when a positive pulse is supplied.

LOW: Stands for low-active.

Time Adjusting107 TIME ADJUSTING

The IN and OUT terminals are provided with the TIMEADJUST terminal board on the rear panel. The master unitsupplies the calibration signal to the slaves. This will beconvenient when more than one unit operate in the system.Make certain to connect relevant IN and OUT terminalstogether.

1. Move the cursor to TIME ADJUSTING with the [] or[] button.

ALARM SETUP The digital disk recorder accepts an alarm signal suppliedfrom the connected device such as camera or camera siteequipment. The recorder also generates an alarm signal byitself when the preset motion detection activates. Any of alarm signals lets the alarm recording start with thepreset recording mode, field rate and picture quality. The alarm recording stops when the preset duration elaps-es, the [ STOP] [SETUP/ESC] button is pressed on thefront panel, or the alarm reset is supplied from the connect-ed device. The recorder supplies alarm recovery out signalon the rear panel.

VDM stands for Video Motion Detector that senses thechanges of video signals in the preset area, and suppliesalarm output. Once the change is detected the recorderstarts recording. The sensitivity setting and area setting fordetection are made on this window.

2. Rotate the JogDial to select the desired parameter, thenpress the JogDial. The default is OFF.

[LOW ↵ ]: VMD is enabled with low sensitivity.[MID ↵ ]: VMD is enabled with mid sensitivity.[HIGH ↵ ]: VMD is enabled with high sensitivity.[OFF]: Motion detection is disabled.

The area setup window appears with an asterisk whenother than OFF is selected. The asterisk represents theup-left or bottom-right of the detection area. The divi-sion lines are not displayed actually on the monitor.

Notes: • VMD should be used with an ordinary camera input to

the unit. Select [OFF] to avoid useless VMD when avideo multiplexer or combination camera supplies theinput to the unit.

• Place the date and status display to the other positionthan the motion detection area on the monitor.Otherwise the date and status display may mislead themotion detector.

• Set the ALARM SUSPEND to ON with the LCD buttonwhen VMD is unneccessarily activated during the VMDsetup.

3. Set the up-left end of the detection area. Move theasterisk to the left or right with the JogDial, and up ordown by pressing the up [] and down [] buttons.

4. Press the JogDial to enter the up-left end. The asteriskposition is highlighted.

1. Press the [B PLAY] button to start playing back.

2. Press the [REW/FF] [1/2] button to start skip play-back. The LED lights.

3. Rotate the JogDial clockwise to descend records (FF)or counter-clockwise (REW) to ascend. The more turn-ing you rotate the JogDial, the faster the picture willchange.

4. Press the [ STOP] button to stop playback.

Note: The SKIP playback may not perform perfectly

when a video multiplexer is installed in the system.

Step PlaybackThe desired still picture is searched minutely by displayingfield by field.

1. Press the [B PLAY] button to start playing back.

2. Press the [STEP] [A / B] button to start step playback.The LED lights.

3. Rotate the JogDial clockwise to descend a frame tolater one or counter-clockwise to ascend it to the olderone.

4. Press the [ STOP] button to stop playback.

Note: Alarm recording may interrupt any of playback

modes. Set the ALARM SUSPEND to ON with the

LCD button if allowed. See page 38 for details.

3. Press the JogDial for 2 seconds.The oldest (latest) record is retrieved.

4. Press the [B PLAY] button.The oldest (latest) record starts playing back.

Playback Oldest/Latest RecordThe oldest or latest record is played back. Procedures forthe latest are enclosed with parentheses.

Operating Alarm Suspending Alarm InputThis may be convenient to be used during setup procedures or when you need not alarm recording. If this is set to ON, thealarm input is ignored and the recorder performs as follows.

• The alarm event will be logged in the history.• The recorder does not enter alarm recording• The recorder does not sound buzzer• The ALARM SUSPEND indicator lights.

1. Press the LCD button downward to display [Alarm Suspend] on the LCD.

2. Select either ON or OFF bypressing the LCD button tothe left or right.

ON: Alarm input is suspend-ed.

OFF: Suspension is reset.

Alarm History SearchAlarm history is listed in chronological order with eventnumber, date, time, availability of recorded picture, and theactivation source on the monitor.

• To browse history1. Hold down the LCD button center for 2 seconds.

The monitor displays ALARM RECALL while thehighlighted line on the monitor is also displayed onthe LCD.

2. Rotate the JogDial to scroll up or down the list.3. Hold down the LCD button center for 2 seconds to

go back to the previous status.

• To search for playback1. Select the desired alarm event by rotating the

JogDial.2. Press the [B PLAY] button to play back the record-

ed picture. The LED lights. The ALARM RECALLdisappears.

3. Press the [STOP] button to stop playback.The ALARM RECALL appears on the monitor.

4. Hold down the LCD button center for 2 seconds toquit alarm history search.

• To erase the stored history1. Move the cursor to “PUSH JOG→DATA CLEAR”,

then press the JogDial.All alarm event records on the list are erased.Note: You can access to the pictures recorded on

the disk by time & date search after the erasure.

Note: There may be cases that the displayed asterisk* onthe alarm history does not stand for the correspondingrecorded picture, because of overwriting. This happenssometimes when the DISK END MODE is set to CON-TINUE.

Resetting AlarmThe activated alarm is reset by any of inputs below.

• The preset duration elapses.• The [ STOP] button is pressed on the front panel.• The alarm reset is supplied from the connected device.

After the reset the recorder changes status as follows. • The recorder stops alarm recording.• Buzzer stops beeping when applied.• The recorder supplies alarm recovery signal on the rear

panel.• Alarm Out signal on the rear panel is reset.

Copy to CompactFlash CardThe recorded pictures on the hard disk are copied to a CFcard for browsing purpose on the personal computer. Theavailable picture quantity depends on the card capacityand recorded picture quality.The following cards are proved to be usable through thePanasonic’s testing.

1. Place a CF card.1-1 Open the card lid. 1-2 Place a CF card into the slot.

The card must be formatted suitable to Windows 95or Windows 98.

2. Display the desired picture on the monitor.Refer to Skip Playback and Step Playback on page 35for search operations.

3. Press the JogDial to freeze the picture.

4. Press the LCD button downward to display [Copy ToCard].

Replace with a new card when “Data Full” appears onthe LCD, then repeat step 6.

7. Pull the card out from the slot as follows.

Folders and FilesA folder is created on the card with a name of 6-digitnumbers; 000001, 000002 and so forth; every time theCOPY TO CARD operation is implemented. A foldercontains files having the extensions of [.jpg] and [.htm] asshown below.

HD100: Root directory of the card

000001: Folder name

000001.jpg to 000003.jpg: Copied picture files. The

number of pictures is specified by the LCD button

operation.

Blue.jpg: A JPEG file to display dummy screen

when no picture is selected.

Index.htm: An HTML file to display thumbnails.

Play.htm: An HTML file to display copied pictures

in order.

000002: Folder name

Notes:• Avoid overwriting!

Save the data to another device before inserting apre-used card into the WJ-HD100. The WJ-HD100overwrites a pre-exist folder and its contents on thecard if its name is, 000001 or 000002 for instance,the same as of that the HD100 is to give to the fold-er.

• Field deviations may take place between the dis-played pictures on the monitor and the recordedones on the card. This is sometime observed whenthe video multiplexer is installed in the system

• Use a browser software on the personal computerapplicable to HTML version 4.0 or later.

1. Select a figure you entered before with the JogDialwhile listening to the number of beeping because thefigure is protected from being exposed on the LCD ormonitor. The rules are as follows.

• “0” is invisible but the initial value.• [beep] [beep] stands for “2” when the JogDial is

turned clockwise.• After that point, [beep] [beep] stands for “0” when

the JogDial is turned counter-clockwise.• Further turning of counter-clockwise over “0”, or of

clockwise from “9” will lead neither effect nor beep.

2. Press the JogDial to move the cursor to the next digit.

3. Repeat step 1 and 2 for remaining digits.The recorder allows you operate the front panel if theproper password is entered until elapsing 5 minuteswithout operating any of buttons.

Lock/Unlock Buttons Password VerificationThe password inquiry is displayed on the LCD and on themonitor when any of locked buttons is pressed.

Try again when Password Error appears on the LCD, orpress the LCD button to quit the verification.
