MODELING AND SIMULATIONS (M&S)Teledyne Brown Engineering (TBE)

has supported every branch of the U.S. military, as well as a number of foreign allies, with simulation-based testing, training, and evaluation services, includ-ing construction of models and simula-tions.

Some of our commercially available products include:

• Advanced Subsystem, Element, and System Simulation (ASESS) – A desktop analytic tool that supports evaluation up to the system-of-sys-tems level across the entire life cycle, from concept definition to user training.

• Joint Force Analysis Simulation (JFAS) – A division-level and below, medium-resolution, aggregated combat model that analyzes forces, weapon performance, and com-mand and control.

Some of our other M&S products are industry-standard models in the Government inventory. These include the Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM), Objective Simulation Framework (OSF), and the Joint Medical Planning Tool (JMPT).

Extended Air Defense Simulation (EADSIM)

EADSIM is a many-on-many simulation of air, missile, and space warfare. EADSIM is one of the most widely used simulations in the world, with over 400 user agencies worldwide. EADSIM is managed by the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command as the executive agent for the Missile Defense Agency (MDA).

EADSIM is the most mature and widely used force-on-force model in the world. It has received extensive examination by the user community, resulting in multiple accreditations. Application of the model by hundreds of users adds to the confidence in EADSIM.

EADSIM incorporates user-driven capabilities, with a proven, rapid-response capability to develop and support the model to meet evolving user needs. TBE is the original and continuing developer of EAD-SIM, first deployed in 1989.

Joint Medical Planning Tool (JMPT)

JMPT is a software program designed for medical planners as a simulation tool that models the flow of patients from the point of injury through more definitive

care. JMPT is also an operations research tool that supports systems analysis, operational risk assessment, and field medical services planning.

JMPT incorporates extensive data for over 300 patient conditions and their corresponding medical treatment tasks, treatment times, critical equipment, transportation assets, medical personnel and required skills, and levels of care. It employs a Monte Carlo method to simulate patient losses due to treatment delays and medical complications in order to assess the impact that resource limitations, system bottlenecks, skill lim-itations, and other factors have on them.

JMPT is a versatile decision-aid tool that can perform the following:

• Generate patient conditions for a patient stream in an identified the-ater

• Prioritize treatment and evacuation routing of patients based on severity of injuries

• Model mortality as killed in action and died of wounds as a function of time

• Simulate patient flow through a net-work of medical facilities, including arrival times, wait times, and treat-ment times

• Offer the ability to build a generic treatment facility with user-defined medical capability and personnel assets

• Model routing and utilization of transportation assets

• Provide dynamic reports in graph and tabular formats that show med-ical treatment facility (MTF) status, patient disposition, and resource utilization.

Medical Planners’ Toolkit (MPTK) MPTK was developed to provide a stan-

dardized, science-based approach to manag-ing patient condition occurrence frequency probability distributions, estimating casual-ties across the range of military operations, predicting civilian casualty estimates for disaster relief and humanitarian assistance operations, developing patient streams from those inputs, and estimating theater hospi-talization role of care requirements.

Hardware-in-the-Loop Modeling and Simulation

TBE has extensive experience in the development, utilization, and maintenance of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HWIL) testing systems. For example, we developed and man-aged the Integrated System Test Capabili-ty (ISTC), and now we are developing OSF.

Objective Simulation Framework (OSF)

OSF is the next generation of missile defense simulation, combining HWIL distributed testing and evaluation with digital simulation. OSF supports all BMDS M&S Stakeholder Applications, BMDS Concept Evaluation, Develop-mental Engineering, Assessment (including Ground Test and Continuous Digital Assessment), and Training. OSF combines the models and HWIL components from each of the BMDS program elements into a system that accurately represents the performance of the BMDS. The elements can integrate using either the legacy wire specification interfaces or can migrate to the OSF Public Interface and take advantage of the next generation integration methods provided by OSF. OSF provides a common truth picture for the simulations of each of the elements along with shared, common simulation services such as communications and truth services. OSF provides automation support to increase the efficiency of setup of the complex input data required to realistically simulate the BMDS. This allows MDA to realistically improve the timeliness, scope, and fidelity of the assessments of BMDS.
