MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

Dea Equipment Use:

Thee’s been a lot o national news coveage ecentl about thehousing slowdown and a possible ipple eect thoughout theeconom. While thee ma be aeas o the count whee that’shappening, we haven’t seen a lot o evidence o it hee. At ModenMachine, ou machine sales o 2007 wee ve stong and we’eoptimistic about 2008 as well.

One eason business emains bisk is because man equipmentownes have seen the poduction benets o owning new equipmentcompaed to olde machines. New machines tend to be aste, moepoweul, moe uel-ecient and moe eliable than those theeplace.

The new Komatsu PC270LC-8 hdaulic excavato (eatued inthis issue o ou Update) is a good example o how Komatsu’snewest models outpeom not onl the pevious geneation, but

competitive machines as well. In a Komatsu eld test with two topcompetitos, the PC270LC-8 showed signicant advantages in bothtenching and tuck loading.

At Moden, poviding poductive and longlasting equipment is just one wa we can help ou succeed. Anothe wa is b povidingoutstanding pats and sevice suppot that keep all ou machinesup and unning. One sevice we oe is a peventive maintenanceinspection (PMI), whee one o ou tained technicians willthooughl inspect ou machines. He’ll check all woking patsand components to make sue thee ae no issues copping up thatma lead to potentiall costl epais, o wose et, shut ou downduing a bus job.

To schedule such an inspection, o to lean what else we can doto help ou get the most out o ou existing equipment feet, eelee to contact ou Moden poduct suppot epesentative o ousevice depatment. We’ll be happ to assist ou in an wa we can.

So, in 1991, Simpson stated DebcoConstuction with two iends (he boughtthem out about a ea late). “In the beginning,we had about hal a dozen people anddid mostl small utilit jobs in the egion.Gaduall, we expanded ou list o sevicesand ou teito.”

Toda, Debco, based in Ooino with anoice in Twin Falls, emplos about 250 peopleduing the bus season (about 75 ae ull-time,ea-aound emploees), and is one o theleading heav-constuction, geneal-contactingims in the Paciic Nothwest. The compandoes multimillion-dolla highwa jobs (massexcavation and paving), lage-scale site wokand undegound utilities (including teatmentplants and pumping stations) thoughout eastenWashington, all o Idaho and all o Montana.

Good relationships,loyal employees

The act that the compan’s tpical job is nowin the $5 million to $15 million ange, and that a

job in the $40 million to $50 million ange is notout o the ealm o possibilit, is athe emakableo a gu who stated out with nothing.

“I sank m lie savings o $20,000 into the business when I stated,” said Simpson. “I was bound and detemined to succeed and to doso b doing things ‘the ight wa.’ That is, do

qualit wok at a ai pice, and build goodelationships along the wa.”

This Debco operator usesa Komatsu tight-tail-swingPC138USLC to lay sewerline at the Canyon Springs

job in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Lonnie stated lie in what he calls “aone-window, ta-papeed shack” nea Ooino,Idaho. In gade school, he began living with aneab am amil and leaned eal on thevalue o had wok. Ate high school, he waswoking as a shaecoppe on the am to ean

It’s a philosoph that’s led to a lot o loaltom customes, vendos and emploees.

Debco has man talented and expeiencedpeople thoughout its wok oce. Kepesonnel include Vice Pesident/Equipment

Manage russell Hendeson; Accountant/Oice Manage Jenn Tock; Poject ManagesLance Leape, Sanda Couse and ChuckMatinez; Supevisos Case Andeson, rickTavis and Steve Sisle; and Lonnie’s wie,Shannon Simpson.

“I don’t ask an o m emploees to doanthing I won’t do,” said Simpson. “Thatincludes getting down in a ditch and wadingthough sewage i that’s what it takes. All o m people, including Shannon, who we call‘Spike,’ have been in the tenches with me and

woked thei wa up. The eall teat thecompan like it’s thei own and the and ouothe ull-time people ae a majo eason othe success we’ve had.”

Based at least in pat on his own expeience o eeling undepaid and unappeciated, Simpsoncompensates his emploees ve well. “Wepa substantial wages and bonuses and haveone o the best beneit/etiement packages inthe indust. A couple o m gus have toldme the actuall think I oe too much — but Icount on them. The compan’s too big o me to

do it all b msel anmoe and I want them tobe teated like I wanted to be teated.”

Successful jobsDebco has done man lage jobs in

the egion in ecent eas, including theeconstuction o ou miles o Highwa 77nea Albion, Idaho.

“It’s a histoic aea, we had 700,000 ads o excavation, and it was the ist Supepave jobin Idaho — so thee wee complicating actos,”said Simpson. “But we ovecame them and itwas a ve successul job o us. I would sa thatman o ou pojects tend to have an unusualelement to them. I think iguing out the bestwa to do a diicult job is one o ou stengths.”

Simpson sas he emphasizes thee thingson each and eve job — saet, qualit andeconomics. “We believe saet and qualit gohand-in-hand. Cews that wok sael ae moe

eicient and do things ight the ist time.”

Simpson modestl sas he believes hiscompan’s wok is “above aveage.” But a ecentpaving poject (Debco stated doing its ownpaving two eas ago because it was havingtouble getting paving companies to oe them apice quote) indicates qualit is above that.

“We paved eight miles o oad in Montanalast all that edeal highwa oicials theecalled one o the top ive pojects the’ve evehad o smoothness,” said Simpson. “Thosetpe o comments mean a lot to us. Fo one

Debco purchased thisKomatsu PC600 two yearsago to help move morethan 700,000 cubic yards omaterial at the company’sAlbion Hill/Highway 77project near Albion, Idaho.“It’s probably the bestequipment investment I

ever made,” said DebcoPresident Lonnie Simpson.

thing, the usuall mean an incentive bonus— and the mean we ael have to go back toedo anthing. But it’s also eall nice to heacomments like that and know ou customesappeciate ou wok.”

As o economics, Simpson sas like allcompanies, Debco has to make mone. “We’ve

been successul though the eas in biddingand maintaining ou magins, but I don’t takeanthing o ganted. I stud the maket andstud m competition. I t to check them outto see what the’e doing, especiall on a job

that I bid and the beat me on it. I want to seehow the wee able to make it wok, and Ichalk that up to expeience.”

Productive equipment anddealer support

In ecent eas, Debco has tuned to ModenMachine o equipment to do those tough

jobs. The compan’s Komatsu leet includesthee excavatos (PC600, PC200 and PC138), aWA380 wheel loade and a D61 doze, as wellas a pave and two olles om Moden.

“Komatsu makes geat equipment —poweul, poductive and uel eicient,” saidSimpson. “We’e especiall ond o the PC600(133,000 lbs. and 429 hp). It’s an animal. Wehave 45-ton tucks and the PC600 loads them inabout a minute and a hal. It’s supisingl astand has been 100 pecent eliable. We haven’thad a single issue in moe than two eas.”

Because o that, Simpson sas, “The PC600is pobabl the best equipment investment Ieve made. I bought it o $450,000. I’ve used ito 4,000 hous and put nothing into it exceptoutine wea pats and oil changes. I I sold ittoda, I could get $375,000 o it. So that’s 4,000hous woth o wok o $75,000, which iguesout to less than $20 an hou. That’s pettemakable o an machine, let alone one as

big and poductive as the Komatsu PC600.”

As pleased as he is with Komatsu, Simpsonsas the sevice he gets om Moden

Machine is equall impotant to him.“Fom m salesman Ga Petes ight upthough Pesident Bian Sheidan, Modenhas povided us with excellent suppot — andthe’ve alwas been ve ai. Simpl put, the’e the best deale I’ve eve woked with.”

“We appeciate the oppotunit Lonniegave us to meet his equipment and suppotneeds,” said Sheidan. “We appeciate him as

both a iend and a business patne, and lookowad to woking with him o man easto come.”

Future looks brightMuch o Debco Constuction’s gowth has

occued in the last ew eas, but Simpsonsas he doesn’t oesee the compan gettingmuch lage.

“I think the econom is good in theNothwest and we could pobabl do moewok i we wanted to, but I like whee we’e atight now,” said Simpson. “We’e big enough todo eall lage jobs, but we’e small enough that

I can still be hands-on out in the ield, which Ienjo. We also have excellent manages in placeight now, but i we got much lage, we’d needmoe — and good people ae had to ind.”

Besides, looking back on whee he’s been,Simpson sas lie ight now is pett good.“I alwas sa, ‘I didn’t choose this caee — itchose me.’ And I’m ve glad it did. Cetainl,I was hoping o something like this whenI stated Debco, but ou need some beaksalong with the had wok to actuall make ithappen. I eel ve otunate. It’s been a geat

ide and I don’t think an o us ae ead o itto end antime soon.” ■

But in takinganothe look at the machine, we concludedthat b inceasing counteweight mass, the

As pat o a unning design change,Komatsu inceased counteweight mass onthe PC270LC-8 b 17 pecent compaed to thePC270LC-7.

“The change was emakable,” said KomatsuExcavato Poduct Manage Tenton Gloe.“With the additional counteweight, lit capacitinceased signiicantl. Just as impotant,

Tests conirm outstanding uel eiciency or PC270LC-8. . . continued

The esult was simila in a tuck-loadingtest. An analsis o ccle times showed thePC270LC-8 took slightl moe than 14.5seconds to load, swing, dump and etun. These include an econom (E) wokmode; an “eco-gauge” that displas to theopeato whethe he’s opeating eicientl owasteull; and an “idling caution” displathat alets the opeato when he’s been idlingo ive minutes o moe (extended idling isconsideed to be an unnecessa and wasteuluse o uel).

REMANUFACTURED PRODUCTSGeneral Manager says ISO certiication oKomatsu reman plant ensures product quality

Q

QUESTION: One o your emphases, uponjoining Komatsu Remanuactured Products,

was to earn ISO 9001 certiication rom theInternational Standards Organization. Haveyou achieved that, and why is it an importantdesignation?

ANSWER: We became an ISO-cetiied planta little moe than two eas ago and webelieve it’s a ve signiicant designation o amanuactuing plant like ous. Fo one thing,ISO cetiication, which includes egula, ongoing ield audits o ou opeations, ensuesthat we’e ollowing ou own standadizedpocesses. These standadized pocesses lead

to a consistentl high-qualit poduct that oucustomes can count on.

Equall impotant, ISO cetiication equiesus to continuousl impove ou opeations. The check qualit measuements, waantatios and custome complaints to see thatwe’e taking appopiate action and ixingan poblems that aise. So es, o us, ISOcetiication is a ve big deal because it’s theoundation o the qualit o poduct that we’enow poducing at Komatsu remanuactuing.

QUESTION: Why is standardization so

important in manuacturing?ANSWER: It’s impotant because, with astandadized pocess, in which the samejob is done the same wa eve time, whena poblem cops up, we can locate whathappened. Without it, ou have one pesondoing the job one wa and anothe pesondoing it anothe wa, so ou ma neve beable to igue out wh a ailue occued. It’sbecause o ou standadized pocesses thatwe’e able to poduce eplacement pats andcomponents that ae essentiall the same as

new and ae waantied as such.Continued . . .

QUESTION: What Komatsu remanuacturedproducts are available?

ANSWER: We eman all majo componentsincluding engines, tansmissions, toqueconvetes, inal dives, tubochages, hdaulic clindes, hdaulic pumps, altenatos — neal evething oconstuction equipment up though the lagestmining machines. We’ve hied a maketingdiecto to wok with ou Komatsu distibutosto make sue we’e meeting thei needs anddon’t have gaps in ou poduct oeings.

QUESTION: What advancements have youmade recently?

ANSWER:We’ve stated inspecting and eusingvalve spings o use on clinde heads. Beoe,we would have used a new valve sping i wewee eman’ing a clinde head. We’e especiallpoud o this because it was initiated b ouemploees. The detemined the could do it andthought it would be a good, cost-saving measue.

QUESTION: It sounds like KomatsuRemanuacturing values its employees.

ANSWER: Cetainl. We have a lot o expeiencein ou wok oce and ve little tunove, andwe el on ou emploees to help make us bette. Some assembl teams have omed what wecall “qualit cicles,” consisting o thee to ivemembes. The qualit cicles povide input omthe loo on how we can impove. It was one o these qualit cicles that came up with the ideao eman’ing the valve spings.

QUESTION: How do your products comparewith new components?

ANSWER: Ou taget is to poduce a poduct

that costs 60 pecent to 65 pecent o what anew component costs, and that povides 80pecent o the lie o a new poduct. Somepeople ma be wondeing wh, i it’s builtto the same standads as a new component,we onl expect to get 80 pecent o the lie. The’ve got to undestand that i a emanengine goes into a machine that has 10,000hous on the ame and 10,000 hous on thetansmission, it ma not un as long as the istengine did. A new engine put in the same usedmachine ma not un as long eithe.

QUESTION: How does a reman productcompare with a “job shop” rebuild?

ANSWER: The main dieences between us anda “job shop” ae ou standadized pocesses andthe numbe o units we build. We’e specialists. This is all we do.

As o a “will-it” o “job shop” mechanic, the’e not going to get the suppot om theOEM that we do. Fo example, we’e in weeklcontact with the acto, getting the latest citicalupdates on poducts and how to impovepeomance. Anothe big dieence is thattpicall, a “job shop” waant coves onl thelabo.

QUESTION: Why should Komatsuequipment users look to KomatsuRemanuactured Products or replacementparts and components?

ANSWER: Komatsu is all about povidingvalue o customes, and we’e an impotantpat o that value equation. The combination o pice, availabilit and qualit make Komatsuemanuactued poducts not onl a viable

altenative to new and ebuilt components, butan excellent value as well. ■
