C ollege is a journey, not a destination. A student may spend a good part of the year learning how to manage his responsibilities and independence. He may navigate changes successfully, he may make mistakes and less than

perfect choices. It is the year of experimentation and exploration and discover new areas he has never considered before. It is not about the race to the end, but instead what you learn from each step in the journey. Here we believe that Information Technology has the potential to shift the boundaries from logic to magic throughout the journey.

COGNIZANCE - A YEAR’S JOURNEY

To encourage research and innovation

This year has seen many tremendous achievements by our students. They have organized, coordinated and designed

various competitions, seminars and guest lectures. I am proud of the fact that we get to publish all this in this issue

of the newsletter. I thank all those responsible for giving the student a platform to showcase their achievements.

U nconventional GPS - A GPS tracking unit is a device, normally carried by a moving vehicle or person, that will use the Global Positioning System to determine and track its precise location, and hence that of its carrier, at

intervals. Now-a-days Data tracking software is available for smartphones with GPS capability. Scientists have declared GPS tracking as a breakthrough technology. Enterprises in all walks of life are trying to use this break-through technology to their greatest advantage in the most creative ways. Lower car insurance : A comprehensive recording of a driver's habits allows insurance companies to provide "pay-as-you-drive" car insurance.

Be prepared always, to welcome your guests : People have been using GPS tracking of their friends’ and relatives’ car to ensure that they are notified whenever the car is in the vicinity of their house.

Driver’s assessment (For driving license) : A car GPS tracking system that integrates with traffic information would give drivers the ability to select routes in real time that were more fuel efficient, less congested, faster or shorter.

Use fuel efficiently : Eventually, such a system would replace gasoline tax since these revenues will decline as more vehicles become less dependent on fossil fuels.

Deliver safe, healthy food : Vehicle tracking systems used in food delivery vans alert the owner if the temperature of the refrigerated compartment moves outside of the range of safe food storage temperatures. It allows them to avoid late deliveries.

“W e should dream of a Digital India. Digital India is a dream for the poor, with broadband connectivity, we can ensure long-distance education. Digital India is a plan not for the benefit of the rich, but the poor.

e-governance is easy governance, efficient governance, and that is important”–Mr. Narendra Modi, P.M. of India. The Digital India initiative seeks to lay emphasis on e-governance and transform India into a digitally empowered society. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology (deitY) anticipates that this program will have a huge impact on the Ministry of Communication and IT. It is to ensure that government services are available to citizens electronically. Modi’s government is focusing on providing broadband services in all villages of the country, tele-medicine and mobile healthcare services and making the governance more participative. Out of the nine pillars of Digital India programme, one of them is IT for job. This pillar focuses on providing training to the youth in the skills required for availing employment opportunities in the IT/ITES sector. IT training will be provided to people in smaller towns and villages for IT sector job over 5 years. BPO’s will be set up in every north-eastern state. Training will be given to service delivery agents as part of skill development to run businesses delivering IT services.

Apps for Digital India are Digital India Portal, MyGov Mobile App, Swachh Bharat Mission App and Aadhaar Mobile Update App. Digital Locker facility will help citizens to digitally store their important documents like PAN card, passport, mark sheets and degree certificates. It is aimed at eliminating the use of physical documents and enable sharing of verified electronic documents across government agencies. Digital Locker provides a dedicated personal storage space in the cloud to citizens, linked to citizen’s Aadhaar number. Global Indians educated in Indian universities like IITs and IIMs have used foreign soil to make inventions and innovations that have benefited the world. With the right impetus it is quite possible to create the next Google, Facebook and WhatsApp out of India. The budget makes a big start by starting a fund for promoting product led startups, a much desired innovation in the thinking of government. The success of India is intrinsically linked to its ability to keep pace with technology. The world has seen an unprecedented change in the technology landscape over the last decade and innovation has become more important than ever before. Technology can help build a Digital India – a knowledge-based society and economy – by empowering, connecting and binding everyone.

DIGITAL INDIA

S atya Nadella, Shiv Nadar and Sundar Pichai are the 3 Indians those who made India proud, establishing India as

leadership brand worldwide. All of them have already been the driving force in their company.

Satya Nadella : Known for his recent promotion as the CEO of Microsoft, Satya was born in Hyderabad. He has

graduated in Electrical Engineering from the Manipal Institute of Technology. Satya then pursued his MS in

Computer Science at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, followed by an MBA from the University Of Chicago

Booth School Of Business. With 22 years of experience with the inner-workings of Microsoft, serving under both Bill

Gates and Ballmer, the only two CEOs the company has had in its 38-year history. “Relevance comes with innovation

and marketplace success”, he added. “The marketplace will speak so clearly that it will not be ambiguous.” He will

have the Nokia handset unit to grow, make Windows Phone a serious contender, continue growing the Xbox unit’s

place in the living room, make windows attractive and grow the cloud services and enterprise business.

Shiv Nadar : Shiv Nadar the founder and chairman of HCL and the Shiv Nadar Foundation, born in Tiruchendur, Tamil Nadu. Shiv Nadar did his diploma from The American College, Madurai and degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PSG College of Technology, Coimbatore. The first company Shiv Nadar along his partners began was Microcomp, a company which mainly sold teledigital calculators in the Indian market. HCL was founded in 1976, with an investment of Rs. 187,000. After making a mark in IT and education, he is now hoping to impact the public healthcare system in India. While Nadar has been mulling a healthcare foray for a while now, people familiar with the development told ET NOW that he has worked out a blueprint for the same. Shiv Nadar has often made daring forays based on his conviction of the future. Albeit a more recent entrant in the software services space, HCL is already a Indian force to reckon with for global technology giants.

Sundar Pichai : Sundar Pichai born in Madras, Tamil Nadu was recently named as CEO of Google. He graduated from Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in Metallurgical Engineering. He did his MS from Stanford University in Material Sciences and Engineering and later on pursed MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. Pichai joined Google in 2004, where he led the product management and innovation efforts for a suite of Google's client software products, including Google Chrome and Chrome OS, as well as being largely responsible for Google Drive. He went on to oversee the development of different apps such Gmail and Google Maps. Pichai has become a familiar face at Google’s events, and is often the one on stage introducing new stuff. He's considered an empathetic and caring person, and has helped resolve internal managerial and political issues. He's also an effective and reliable manager, delivering products on time.

SALIENT FEATURES

If my fingers can type it and computer can understand it then I can program it.

In IT to win IT

Don’t just meet your goals, destroy them.

If you are working on something exciting that you really care about, you don’t have to be pushed. The vision

pulls you.

Vision is a picture of the future that produces passion.

If it doesn’t challenge you, it won’t change you.

The problem with troubleshooting is that trouble shoots back.

Treat your password like your toothbrush. Don’t let anybody else use it, and get a new one every six months.

Computing is not about computers anymore. It’s about living.

Pain is inevitable, suffering is optional.

A vision is all that’s required to build up the future.

Programming is like you are telling world’s stupidest thing to do the smartest job.

On the internet, if you are not paying then you are product.
