    Abstract

Some say that folk dance is old, too expressive and sometimes not pleasing to the eyethese are some of the reactions and responses of teenagers whom we ask why they rather dance

hip hop and street dances than folk dances. These are maybe the reasons why most of us

disregard folk dance and dont want to learn this such dance because of how the society reacts tothis certain kind of dance.

On the bright side, schools, universities still value folk dances for reasons like: preserving

the tradition and culture of our nation and of course to still have the patriotism within the hearts

of the children as well as the elders since folk dances is one of the center of culture of our nation. Most of us are not amused by our own dance because it is out of date b ut people

overseas visit our country just to watch our festivals and as well as our folk dances.

Passion cannot be ciltivated overnight you must promote to them about folk music

constantly perhaps through good teaching. You could only hope that through such activities theywould have more interest in folk music after that have more passion for folk music.

Firstly for youths to be more interest in folk songs dance we must first attract them. It s

like a pull factor. We can't force youths to love folk songs straight away we must promotefolk songs through various fun and enjoyable activities. Yes attract them to folk music.

We could do these ativities such as letting them do fusion music whereby they fuse folk music

with popular music, much loved by youths through the garageband software whereby they useonly folk song instruments so that the definition of folk music does not change and that they

would not just love the fusion music and hate folk music. Likewise for folk dance integrate both

    dance together.

Background of the StudyCountries in the world have their own cultures made more colorful, beautiful and vibrant

because of Folk Dances that are reflection of who they are. In the east, the Chinese have theirsymbolic Dragon Dance, the Japanese have the ancestral dance Bon Odori. In the west the

Americans have their Square Dance. On the other hand, the Philippines will not be left behind.

"The Pearl of The Orient" boast of a varitey of Filipino Folk Dances. (Roseman, J, L., 2004)

Modern dance is a term usually referring to 20th-century concert dance, although it hasalso been applied to a category of 20th-century ballroom dances. Modern dance refused classical

ballet's stress on feet as the primary catalyst for dance movements. It, instead, put stress on torso

employing such elements as contact-release, floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation. Itwas usually performed in bare feet, often with non-traditional costuming.

(philippinesculturalfolkdances.blogspot.com) Modern dance and folk dance are very expressive. You are usually telling a story with

modern and folk dance. There is a lot of floor work and very abstract choreography. You need to

be able to feel the music, relate to the story. But in these two dances, there are some opposingcharacteristics; these characteristics will be later on enumerated in the study.

Significance of the Study1. To attract modern day people to still try to learn folk dance.

    2. To encourage PE teachers to change their teaching skills for folk dance for the better

so that students will be more interested3. To let know the readers why modern day people like folk dance than modern dance.

people nowadays like modern dance instead of folk dance as well as why we still need to study

    and learn folk dances.

    Body

    Folk dance and Modern

There are a number of modern dances, such as hip hop dance, that evolve spontaneously,

but the term "folk dance" is generally not applied to them, and the terms "street dance" or

"vernacular dance" are used instead. The term "folk dance" is reserved for dances which are to a

significant degree bound by tradition and originated in the times when the distinction existed

between the dances of "common folk" and the dances of the "high society".

A number of modern ballroom dances originated from folk ones.

The terms "ethnic" and "traditional" are used when it is required to emphasize the cultural rootsof the dance. In this sense, nearly all folk dances are ethnic ones. If some dances, such as polka,

cross ethnic boundaries and even cross the boundary between "folk" and "ballroom dance",

ethnic differences are often considerable enough to mention, e.g., Czech polka vs. German polka.

Not all ethnic dances are folk dances; for example, ritual dances or dances of ritual origin

are not considered to be folk dances. Ritual dances are usually called "Religious dances" because

    of their purpose. (Mazo, J, H., 2000)

Why do modern day people specially teenagers like modern dances more than folk dances?

Some say that folk dance is old, too expressive and sometimes not pleasing to the eyethese are some of the reactions and responses of teenagers whom we ask why they rather dance

hip hop and street dances than folk dances. These are maybe the reasons why most of us

    Why love folk dance?

The Philippines consist of 7107 islands, and is broken down in three groups of islands. The Luzon, Mindano, and Visayas. Each of these regions contain different languages, history,

regligon, and traditions. With each region having different influence in thier arts, crafts, and

ancestorical dances. Lets take a trip through each region and explore the different styles, costumes, Dances and Talents from Each Region. As we explore each of the regions and styles, please remember alot of these Cultural and Folk dances represents hardships and daily back

breaking tasks, that has turned into a art form. Many of the dances you will read about here were

actuall activities or chores that the Filipino endured to survive the poor economy and state of thenation. (philippinesculturalfolkdances.blogspot.com)

Luzon consisting of the tribes such as Ifugao, Benquet, Kalinga, Bontoc, Apayo, Kalinga,

sometimes these are call Igorot. " But sometimes that is considered degrading ." Cordillerea

name also used for some parts the Luzon Region...Northern most region of the Philippines, Luzon gets its Cultural influence from Hindu-Buddist,

Spanish and many ethnic regilous tribes. All with differences and beliefs. But in all the Cultural

and Folk Dances from this region represents all different factions in one way or the other.Visayas being the Central Island of The Philippines, Visayas is also broken down into

three sections. Central , Eastern, Western. Consisting of Austronesians, Negritos, these we

Animist Tribal Group. Many others tribes from around surrounding island would come after the

downfall or break up of thier tribes. Visayas became a melting pot for many different Tribes andCultural backgrouds. You will find Arbian, Spanish, and some Western influences in the dances

of this region. You will see that the dances of the Visayas are more upbeat and exciting, not so

much in Drama and tribal meanings as other regions.Mindanao. This is the southern most region of The Philippines. Being the second largest

island in the Philippines, its Culture consists of mostly Muslium or " Moro " people, also

composed of other ethnic groups such as the Maranao, Tausug, Banguingui, and indigenous

tribes know as Lumad. You will see alot of Arabian, and Middle Eastern influence in thiercostumes and dances.

Most of us are not amused by our own dance because it is out of date but people

overseas visit our country just to watch our festivals and as well as our folk dances.

    Reccomendation

You could convince them by telling them the benefits of folk dance or song for examplelistening to folk song/dance helps to improve sleep quality and help them to learn better(Mozart

effect the BBC has some articles about how classical music helps the brain learn better). When

youths listen to it they would have more curiousity about folk music and perhaps one day they

    would have passion for it.

    Conclusion

Folk dance maybe a not amusing dance for young people, but at some point they will

learn to love it with proper guidance and teaching.
