Modernism

ModernismRealism, Impressionism, CubismModernismThroughout the latter half of the 19th century, several distinct artistic movements took place:RealismLargely used in writing. The opposite of Romanticism, which downplayed the ugly side of society. Realism emphasized societys flaws and humanitys failings by discussing things like alcoholism, prostitution, drug abuse, materialism, and poverty. Notables: Charles Dickens, Honor de Balzac, and George Elliot. ModernismLike realism in its lack of concern for morality and disdain for middle-class life, but less concerned with social issues. Modernists paid close attention to aesthetics and beauty by using non-traditional forms.ImpressionismPainting style which focused on scenes from middle class society, but rendered in dots or splashes of light and color to create a whole image.PostimpressionismAn extension of impressionism which sought to combine the style with earlier artistic techniques.CubismRejected realism in form and instead sought to create images by using overlapping and often discordant geometric shapes.
