Greetings Modesto Fans!

It has been 45 years since the Summer of Love!   But the cool thing is that the Summer of Love is back and better than ever. History and has been romanticized and now a new gen-eration is celebrating global togetherness.   Modesto will take a trip back in time in August where we have Barry McGuire (“McGuinn and McGuire just keep getting higher”) telling his 60’s stories and singing the songs we remember, ModStock will take over Graceada Park with Modesto’s own festival of Peace Love and Music and the Modesto originated and global critically band Grandaddy returns for a secret local warm up show, and then sets out on the road performing around the globe beginning at OutsideLands.   Over 15,000 people will be enjoying their own Summer of Love at X Fest, our annual huge sum-mer music and fun festival in Downtown Modesto.  So while the tomato trucks race around our community as our amazing agriculture feeds the world, our local music feeds our ears and our local community loaded with culture and great people feed our souls.  Yes indeed, it is the Summer of Love for so many diff er-ent reasons.  Th is month, we get to know our Modesto Mayor Marsh as he shares with us his vision for Modesto and how we can all help feed our civic culture and make Modesto vibrant andstrong. It is really going to be a fun month for everyone… except for the kids that have to go back to on Aug 7, the earliest ever for the traditional school year.    Be careful, drive careful, and ride your bike carefully.  School is so very important.  In all of my research for the Modesto Historic Cruise Route, it became so very clear the huge role high school can play.  Th e clubs, the good times, the friendships that are forged with school spirit that will last forever. Make it count and get some good tips from the All Ages Pages this month and be true to your school. I want to make a special thanks to our writers, advertisers and supporters for helping bring ModestoView to the people of our community.  Without you, we could not print and distribute ModestoView so that it reaches our local businesses, homes and the peo-ple in our area that care about truly experiencing life and making great contributions to our city.  Local business makes our community stronger and ModestoView promotes lo-cal businesses daily. Th anks to you, we are spreading the good word in Modesto and are “Serving Civic Pride Daily”

ModestoView has been 100% local, 100% independent, and 100% Positive since 1997 and I appreciate everyone that has helped along the way.

Enjoy your Modesto day!ChrisMurphyPublisher, [email protected]

Welcome to August in Modesto!

I’m co-writing this again with my daugh-ter this month because of my broken arm. It has been very nice to work with her. We managed to have a great time in July and we are looking forward to an exciting Au-gust. Th e elephant in the room this month is obviously X-Fest. In just a few days, the streets of Modesto will be populated by a massive raucous crowd on a mission to keep the party going well into the night. Personally, I have never really been a big fan of X-Fest but I am really excited about this year. I think that Chris Ricci and his army of promoters and planners have their fi nger on the right trigger this time around. It seems like they are trying to give X-Fest a bit of an overhaul and the highlights that we have heard about seem like they will be a lot of fun. No matter what you are into, there should be something for you to enjoy X-Fest this year. Make sure to pack your bikini for the wild foam party, plan for a possible alien abduction when the Dancetronauts land their spaceships downtown, watch out for fl ying chairs as pro wrestlers take over and be prepared to wear all your favorite ling and get loose with Paul Wall and Twista. I’m really excited about seeing the Moonshine Bandits bring their crew back to downtown Modesto. Th ese guys have had an amazing

year full of success and accolades and it will be nice to celebrate with them in person. What we really need to do as a community this month is support all the venues and small businesses that rely on us. Rock fans will appreciate the return of Th eory of a Deadpan to Modesto Cen-tre Plaza on August 7th, art fans will have another opportunity to converge on the streets during the Th ird Th ursday Art Walk on August 16th, movie fans will see plen-ty of indie fi lms during the course of the month at the State Th eatre and Brenden Th eatre will serve up the debuts of Total Recall, Th e Expendables 2, Paranorman and Jeremy Renner’s Th e Bourne Legacy. Hollywood is really keeping an eye on this fi lm to see if Renner can hold his own as a marquee name. Most of his other fi lms have seen him surrounded by some of the

biggest stars in the industry. I hope he does well. It has been exciting to watch his rise to fame. Challenge yourself to give downtown Modesto at least one night or day of your time this month. Take your whole family to a Farmer’s market, a museum, outdoor concert or allow them to explore McHenry Mansion. Take someone special and en-joy dinner on an outdoor patio and a long walk. Do what you can to get to know the place that you call home. You know how I feel about Modesto. I would love for others to enjoy it as much as I do. Follow me on Twitter as @modestofa-mous and check in once in a while at www.facebook.com/rporraswriter to see my latest work. E-mail: [email protected]. Have a great month out there. Do good things. Be good Humans.

On Friday the 10th of August, a mass of respected, talented and fun individuals from Modesto’s music and arts community will share river respect on the banks of the Stanislaus River near Oakdale, CA for a weekend celebration and sleeping under the stars. It is the midst of summer, and the down-town galleries and art places remind you their space is air conditioned.  Good plac-es to “chill”, enjoy the art and even fi nd a hot buy.  New shows at Gallery 909, Paper Planes, and the Valley Sun Catchers at Mis-tlin Gallery with companion show featur-ing 3D found objects.    Over at Tresetti’s, Mistlin Gallery has a ce-lebrity bartender fundraiser, August 2, 5 to 9 pm.  If dining, or drinking mention your support for Mistlin Gallery, and add tips to jar to add to the Central California Art As-sociation operating funds and its support for Art education and local artists. .Check out the hot new Aaron Vickery mu-ral at Serrano Social Club, and the new club layout and décor.  Tony has made the Club ever more interactive.  Other art still rotates downstairs and the upstairs loft , so grab a cup of Joe at the least and check it out. Th e “Emergence” show at Chartreuse Muse has been a success commercially as well as fi ne new group show.  Several pieces apparently sold at the July Art Walk.  Au-gust is the last month to see this one, as the Muse celebrates its Tenth anniversary in September, with duo show by partners Sandra Veneman, and Ellen Roehne.A couple new spots started showing art in July.  Center Stage Conservatory in lower level of the once City Mall at J and 11th, has some of my art up in the concessions area for their production of Two Gentle-man of Verona, and the theater group plans to feature more artists in the future.  Mark

Holden hosted the Beatnik Artist Guild show at his home studio, and Aaron Rowan featured visual  artists  in his July 14th mu-sic show at Deva.  Th e Hot August Th ird Th ursday Art Walk is August 16, and we’ll note Vanity Salon on 11th across from 1010 Tenth is on Art Walk in case you’ve yet to drop in.  Mocha Magic, Fleur De Lis, also on the map.  Find the whole list at www.modestoartwalk.comDue date for the Garden Party at Greenery Nursery and Garden Shop in Turlock event is August 8, cost $20 a piece for artist entry. Th e September 8 event is pricey at $50 in downtown Turlock.   Th is one is co-spon-sored by the Carnegie Center for the Arts, but open to all regional area artists. Tickets for the “Art in the Garden” fund-raiser for Mistlin gallery/ Central Califor-nia Art Association, should be available in August.  Check at the gallery, Green’s Mar-ket, Westurf and other nurseries, or call the

toll free information number at 888-736-8003.  Tickets are $20, but children under 12 get in free. In addition to the gallery, Galletto and Deva will be on the tour this year, with several private gardens in the College and Graceada Park neighborhood.  Art in the Garden is Saturday, September 29. Other September events to look for-ward to include Ballet in the Park at Graceada Park September 16.  Presented by the Central West ballet company as part of their community outreach programs, it will be partnered with Carnegie Arts Center, Stanislaus Arts Alliance and info tables from Mistlin Gallery.  September is also start up for the Stanislaus Artists Open Studio plan-ning eff ort for 2013 and if you need a trip out of town, Sonora Second Satur-day Art Night goes on in August 11, and September 8.

Twin Rivers Saloon- Bar and Grill

I have driven down Highway 132 en route to drunken debauchery in San Francisco more times than I should ethically let you know.  Each time I’ve made the trek, I’ve always passed the Twin Rivers Saloon, pre-viously the Mint Club, and have thought  to myself: “I should actually GO there some-time.”  But alas, I never did, until recently.  Suited up with my friend, photographer Michael J., from Michael J. Designs, as my offi cial designated driver (I knew what I was in for) and picture-taker, we headed out to the Twin Rivers for ‘Grill Your Own Steak’ Tuesday. So in the best interest of any other readers who have never ventured to the Twin Riv-ers, I have ever so graciously complied the following tips for your fi rst-time-visiting consideration.  You’re welcome.1. Go on a Tuesday- Th is so happens to be ‘Grill Your Own Steak Night’.  You may not realize from the exterior, but the Twin Rivers boasts a sizable backyard, complete with horseshoe pits and stage, which they defi nitely need to facilitate the number of people that attend this weekly event.  Mind you, I have never, ever grilled my own steak before, and this evening brought me to the unfortunate conclusion that I legitimately suck at it.  Th ankfully, I had an entire bar of obliging BBQ experts to assist my pathetic self. I am admittedly a barfl y, and I have yet to fi nd a better summertime Tuesday night activity. I recommend coming in slightly starved on Tuesday because you’re going to be get-ting quite the arm-toning exercise picking

up and putting down your plate.  Tuesday night dinner consist of a 10 oz. Angus sir-loin, green salad, baked beans, and garlic bread, all completely house made, and un-der $11. 2.  Be nice to Faye Sarai- Not only is she an awesome person and bartender, I also sus-pect she may be able to kick anyone’s ass who may cross her; and I really mean that.  Needless to say I was a tad intimidated by this drink-slinging, quick-witted, Fireball-slamming bartender whom everyone re-spectfully addresses by name.  She can also carry fi ve full pint glasses in one hand, which I thought was of Cirque du Soleil ca-liber in both coordination and talent.  She is also the very fi rst bartender to make me a drink involving tomato juice that I didn’t have to pretend to like. Faye has been at the Twin for about 5 1/2 years and is clearly a favorite among bar patrons; no wonder since our interview was punctuated by her pouring drinks, making fantastic food, and carrying on at least three separate conversations simulta-neously.  One customer stated: “When you walk through the door, you know you’re welcome, but Faye makes this place a blast.” Faye, in turn, has quite the soft spot for the bar as well, stating: “My best friends are the ones that come here; I have no reason to go anywhere else.” Aww… 3. Fantastic food- Th e Twin Rivers is not only a sizable bar, it’s also a great restaurant (hence the ‘grill’ bit in the name) which prides itself on its homemade, local pro-duce, and from-scratch quality.  Ruben’s,

burgers, salads, and anything “beer-bat-tered and deep-fried” is on the menu.  Ask about the Okie Tacos. 4. It’s not as far as you think- “But, Kate,” you say, “the Twin Rivers is sooooooo far away!  It would take forever to get there!”  Not so, I would reply.  For your informa-tion I clocked the distance between the Twin Rivers and downtown Modesto and it was just under eight miles5. Lastly, some quick words to the wise.  Have a designated driver (or a cab number on hand) because you’re not going to want to leave; the 100+ bottle bar, combined

RecipeFaye’s BeerWhat you’re going to do:In a salt-rimmed pint glass, combine--1/2 shot vodka-4 olives, juice included

with seven beers on tap and the cocktail-styling of Faye make for an amazing time. Ladies, do not wear your favorite bra; the dollar-wallpapered bar is fl ecked with the occasional brassiere from late-night fun at the Twin.  And fi nally, I encourage you not to attempt to engage Faye in any sort of drinking contest; you wouldn’t stand a chance. . Tuesday- Grill Your Own Steak NightFriday-  All-You-Can-Eat Clam ChowderEvery Night- Awesome Drinks7000 Maze Boulevard  Modesto, CA209.575.2551

Note: Now I warn you, ModestoView readers, I was told by more than one person that “Faye is the only one that can make this drink right.” So I recom-mend, once you have been dissatisfi ed with your numerous failed attempts at constructing this to perfection—do yourself a favor and just go see Faye to have it done properly.

-A few pepperoncini slices-Squeeze of lime-Dash of spices-Bit of tomato juice-Top off with your favorite beer

is dedicated to his two passionsThroughout the 80s and early 90s, before he became a criminal defense attorney, Rick Meyer traveled throughout northern California and Nevada drumming for vari-ous bands. While it was a meager living, for Rick it wasn’t about the money; it was about passion for the art of music. He left the music world to pursue a career in law, but remains a long time supporter of the local music scene. He is particularly passionate about motivating young people to pick up a musical instrument. “I feel that learning to play an instrument is an en-deavor that can lead to lifelong joy and per-sonal satisfaction. I believe it’s important to expose our young people to the art of mu-sic because some of them will get hooked, and it will become a positive distraction from less desirable options.” His offi ce has sponsored drum clinics by master class drummer and clinician Mike Johnston for the last two years. He also sponsors local artists whenever possible

and will continue to look into to ways to promote the art. Rick is equally passionate about his work as a criminal defense trial attorney. “Law

enforcement offi cers arrest people that they feel have broken the law. In America’s criminal justice system, a person is con-sidered innocent until proven guilty. It is

my job is to vigorously defend my clients. Th at may mean defending a client in jury trial, or working diligently to ensure that my client’s sentence is fair.” While Rick works in all areas of criminal defense, he concentrates his practice on DUIs and Cultivation/possession of mari-juana cases, particularly medical marijuana cases. Offi ce paralegal Laura Diarte is fl u-ent in Spanish and meets with all of the fi rm’s Spanish-speaking clients. “I have chosen this career because I am a true advocate of an individual’s rights, and fi rmly believe in the right of every indi-vidual to fair treatment through the U.S. judicial system. I work hard in every case to protect the rights of my clients.”

By Dana JohnsonOld Plantation Coffee & Café

Eat, Drink,and Pet Friendly!

On the corner of Floyd and Roselle in the pleasing Village One Plaza you will fi nd Old Plantation Coff ee & Café (OPCC). No mat-ter how you like your coff ee, from French pressed, espresso, iced (cold pressed for 24 hours), or the ever popular cool you down, or fl avored “blended coff ee crush”, this is a fabulous place to enjoy it. Yes! It’s locally roasted coff ee and brewed fresh daily, but you know I need something to go with it! “Breakfast panini please, and perhaps I should try one of those luscious Belgian waffl es since I’m here!” Just saying! Rose and Vince Lentini owners of the Old Plantation Coff ee and Café opened this feeling of home establishment in March of 2011 with the warm intentions to make every customer feel like a special guest in their own home. Some patrons look like they are dining in their own home offi ce. As Rose and I chatted in the outdoor patio I was delighted by her friendly smile and impressed that she knew more than half the patrons by name. She even knew Sam, the big fl uff y dog who is a regular at the dog friendly patio seen chomping down the free doggie treats. Equally refreshing was to see the staff more than simply serving the delicious menu items, as they all appeared to be enjoying their interactions with each other and the customers. OPCC employs 8 cheerful people, including “Day One” Dena Atta! Yes she has been there from day one! I actually live in this neighborhood and I’m thrilled the next time, likely tomorrow (lol), when I have a craving for a real burger; I can get one freshly made to order right in this local café! It gets better, even a PESTO burger, yep-yep!! Th e pesto chicken panini is the most popular amongst customers,

By Chef Dana Johnson now seen on FOX40 every 1st Friday of the monthFacebook: Dana’s Family Kitchen

so I tried it with an OPCC signature salad with a sassy raspberry vinaigrette dressing, feta cheese, dried cranberries, walnuts, and my favorite, chopped bacon. In a word, Dana~licious! OPCC also has a diff erent homemade specialty soup each day; I can’t wait to try the split pea with yams!  With so many diverse needs when it comes to food and drink, I’m happy to report that OPCC also has several gluten free, sug-ar free, and vegan items on their variety packed menu. Parent friendly too, as the kid’s menu has healthier choices, smaller portions and lower prices!  Yes, I will bring my laptop, log in to the free wi-fi and I will call it a work related! I’m thinking it’s now a tasty tax write-off ?!  Modesto View’s signature question: Bea-tles or Stones; Rose deferred to her hus-band Vince and I was caught off guard by his response; he said Beatles because Mick Jagger is ugly! We all burst out loud laugh-ing and decided to leave it at that. Old Plantation Coff ee & Café3020 Floyd Ave. Ste 101 Modesto, CA 95355 (Village One Plaza/Raley’s Shop-ping Center)(209) 552-0333

Jason Lytle -Grandaddy Reunion.. No Longer on Standby, Now it’s On.

By Chris MurphyI was so very excited when I got the sneak peak teasers from OutsideLands Festival. Could it be true? Th ey had posted an Ins-tagram pic of Grandaddy on their line up.  Yes, I learned it was true, aft er breaking up a few years ago, Grandaddy was back. Was it one show or more? It was a global tour. Th e band that created Th e Crystal Lake, Jed the Humanoid, He’s Simple, He’s Dumb, He’s the Pilot, Levitz, Jeez Louise, AM180 and so many other globally acclaimed hits were back.  Created in Modesto by song-writer Jason Lytle and band mates, Jim Fairchild, Kevin Garcia, Aaron Burtch, and Tim Dreyden, Grandaddy for many years was known all around the world, playing for 50,000 people in Brazil and other huge festivals and returning to Modesto play-ing for 100 lucky locals at the Dirty Duck (now Speakeasy).  Music critics loved the musical creations that were showcased in albums like Under Th e Western Freeway, Soft ware Slump, Sumday, and Just Like the Fambly Cat on the V2 label and a variety of handmade tapes and CDs beginning in 1992. Grandaddy broke up in 2006, Jason moving to Montana and the rest going their separate ways, Jim recording as All Smiles and a guitarist for Modesto Mouse and Aaron in Good Luck Th ift Store.  You don’t know what the future holds for Gran-daddy, but for 2012 they are back together and we have a few shows and maybe this will inspire more Grandaddy music. We caught up with Jason Lytle as they were doing their summer prep for the tour.ModestoView: What made you decide to reunite the band and take your show around the world? Jason Lytle: Money, money, ....and money. No, Im’ just kidding (sort of).Actually just last year Jim Fairchild and I had been talking a bit and hammering out some details for an anniversary reissue we were working on for our album “Th e Soph-

tware Slump”. It kept coming up as a possi-bility, or something we might consider if it sounded fun and if there was enough mon-ey involved to make it worth our while. Th e Outside Lands off er arrived in our lap and we said “well, as long as we are rehearsing and making the eff ort we may as well throw in a few more shows”.When the word got out (in the industry) that we were reforming for shows, a bar-rage of off ers started coming in. With the help of some trusted people, we settled on the best off ers, plotted a course, and began fi guring out how to play all of our songs again. MV: What or who inspires you now?JL: Other than watching the Kardashians on my 60 inch plasma TV in my boxers, with the new Katy Perry blasting on the Bose, while twittering on my Iphone with Doritos fi ngers, I enjoy spending as much time as possible outdoors .....oft en hiking, running, biking, skiing, or perhaps just staring at a rock.As far as music...Clint Eastwood is my fa-vorite guitar soloist. MV:  Is there a Grandaddy song that you would like to re-record in a diff erent way?JL: We have one called “Laughing Stock” off of Under the Western Freeway that I envisioned being a sort of Neil Young Sci-Fi epic at one point. I don’t think the re-cording quite captured that. So given the opportunity, I might take another crack at that one. MV: Is there a city or country that you have wanted to perform in that you haven’t?JL: New Zealand. I’ve been to Australia twice so that makes it even more frustrat-ing and/or elusive. It just has everything I look for in an “ideal island recreational paradise”.  So yeah....either New Zealand or Westley.

MV: How are you diff erent now since you took this time off and relocated?JL: A while back I coined a phrase “living in Montana has made me hardy rather than hardened”.I actually left the Central Valley because I needed a break from the crime, drugs, pollution, paranoia, and the destitution that is all too prevalent and visible here. I mean....there are plenty of wonderful and charming aspects of this area as well. But I was having a hard time seeing the good stuff and I was just worn out and a little too overly sensitive to everything. I didn’t want to become hardened to the negativity. So I moved somewhere where the quality of life is much diff erent. Th e winters are brutal and the terrain can be unforgiving.  In this way I have become hardier. If and when I leave Montana, I will be grateful for that. MV: Do you miss wakeboarding in our canals?JL: Canal surfi ng, taking the bus to vintage faire, keggers on Litt Road,

skating 5 story’s, concerts in the park, eat-ing at the (old) Old Mill, not eating at Der Weinerschnitzel, romantic evenings at Pick ‘n Pull, Beyer High School dances, tire fi res, putting soap in the fountain on McHenry and Briggsmore.....you name it... I have fond memories of all of it !

By Sue RichardsonHaving but one screen doesn’t mean Modesto’s only historic movie theater, and the region’s only art house, doesn’t book the best fi lms. Quite the contrary.  Th e State has managed to take its single movie screen and transform itself into what can only be referred to as a mini megaplex but with one signifi cant diff erence: Th e State shows clas-sic, cult, foreign, independent and art fi lms, and to an ever-growing and appreciative audience. Some of the most buzzed about fi lms, many direct from the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, have been among the selections ardent cinema-goers have seen at Th e State, including Buck, Midnight in Paris, Th e Artist, and Moonrise Kingdom. Check out our exciting and diverse Coming Soon playlist.Your Sister’s Sister, a long-awaited, and much-requested indie favorite starring Emily Blunt, jump opens Friday, Aug. 3. Th e melancholy and idiosyncratic comedy Dark Horse follows Saturday, Aug. 4, along with Woody Allen’s latest off ering, a romantic comedy set in Rome, To Rome With Love, which opens Friday, Aug. 10, is the follow-up to Allen’s smash commercial hit, Midnight in Paris, and stars his muse Penelope Cruz,

and Alec Baldwin.  A documentary that Th e New York Times devoted a full page to in its weekly section on fi lm and entertain-ment, Queen of Versailles, opens Aug. 11, and promises a wild ride through a world of excess and a corresponding fall from grace for a billionaire couple building the largest home in the United States (90,000 square feet, to be exact). It’s a parable for our times, and it’s also an epic with all of the Sturm and Drang of a Shakespearean tragedy.  Fresh from Sundance and Cannes, Beasts of the Southern Wild, opens Sat. Aug. 25.   Cast with unknowns, the fi lm is set in the Bath-tub, a low-lying Louisiana Gulf Coast island whose dirt-poor residents have a precarious, unfettered off -the-gridlife.Of course there are classics screened at Th e State, such as Raiders of the Lost Ark (Sat. Aug. 18) resented by the Modesto Film So-ciety and the Cinema Club. Th ere’s much to see at Th e State, and thanks to some very creative programming, it can all be seen on the theater’s oversized single screen! For more info, go to www.thestate.org, call the box offi ce at 209-527-4697, or swing by the theater and pick up a calen-dar of upcoming fi lms to tack onto your refrigerator or bulletin board.

EWROCKABILLY GALLO ARTS

Since the Rockabilly shows have been some of the most fun things happening around here, I though I would ask some of our locals “What do you think of the Rockabilly Scene?” We got some great an-swers and learned how passionate people are about our music.

“I love the rockabilly scène in the valley and it is more than just a blend of the 50s sound of blues, country and gospel, but the style and culture that has moved to a mod-ern era where hot rods, poodle skirts and tattoos seem to belong together.” I think it is exciting to know that rockabilly in valley is fi nding its way back home again, where it all started!” ~ MJ

For me I’ve always been looking for the real raw sound of rock and roll. When I found Rockabilly it was as close too pure as I have yet to fi nd and that’s why I love it. ~Devon

Rockabilly was my rebellion from my par-

ents’ music (Van Halen, AC/DC, etc.) - I ran to Sinatra and NPR and pretty quickly ran headfi rst into rockabilly and roots. For me, it’s that sense of what’s right in my soul. Music that actually has a soul. . Un-like all this top 40 business. I’ve always had an affi nity and passion for mid-century, and when I found the music to match, it felt right. For me, it’s hearing the upright and feeling my heart right along side. It’s breathing and sighing, drinking and mak-ing love. It’s all the things my heart and soul craves. ~ Tess

I love Rockabilly!! Its just energetic, and usually the musicians are very talented, and I love watching a musician who knows what they are doing. ~ Stephen Th e music...for me is the best. Th e rocka-billy scene is fun to watch...but sometimes a little pretentious...but still fun to watch. ~ Anonymous

Great heritage here, should have a spot on the walk of fame. ~ Jennifer

I dig the Rockabilly scene. I wish I knew more about the culture. Th e Rockabilly Culture has been in existence since the late 40’s. It kind of evolved in the underground.

It is very cool. ~Patty

Absolutely love Rockabilly! I would say mostly because it’s rockin’ some old school swing! Th at’s probably the best way to put it. Th e music is so upbeat and energetic, but with a little old school swing for some class. I just love it! ~ Florinda

I think it’s a fantastic style of music and wish I could be in a rockabilly band! ~ Jojo

Rockabilly is so much more then the classy chicks in high heels, shiny bright hot rods, slicked backed hair. For me it is the passion and drive the musicians have slappin’ the bass and beating the hell out of there three piece drum set. Th e sultry voice that car-ries a tune to make your heart beat faster. A passion that will not die…for some they don’t like it and I believe it is because the just don’t understand the roots of it all. ~Anonymous

I love everything about the music! ~ Eli

Th e Unity Rockabilly Stage will be the place to be at X fest on August 4. Check www.modestoview.com for regular rockabilly shows and upcoming events.

Wow, what a wild and crazy way to start off the 2012/2013 season at the Gallo Center. Th e legendary Steve Martin, in full come-dic bluegrass splendor will be one of the most anticipated performances at the Gallo Center. Th is season has so many things for nearly everyone in our community, from Crobsy, Stills Nash, the B52’s, West Side Story, Defending the Caveman, Dream-girls, Rain, Rock of Ages, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Shrek Th e Musical. Don’t delay getting tix as some of the big events for this season are selling out. People have asked me if the Gallo center is truly committed to our local arts and events. Th e answer my friends is 100% YES! Take for example in July, on one stage YES company production of Willy Wonka and on the other stage an incredible per-formance from MariRose Powell, our own local musician. Our downtown restaurants were busy before these performances and people are coming from all over the re-gion to enjoy our local talent. Bravo Gallo Center.

Gallo Center Season is a winner! Most importantly, we need to look what the Gallo Center has done for our community at large. It has delivered on its promises to connect the people in Modesto, linking kids to the arts, to bring world-class per-formances to our citizens, attracting people from all over the central valley to Down-town Modesto to see amazing and engag-ing performances. Artists from all over the world get a taste of downtown Modesto and enjoy our hospitality. Our hotels and restaurants are busy when there is an event at the Gallo or the State Th eatre. Arts and entertainment are an economic boost for Modesto as well as culturally splendid. So what now? Buy tickets for an event. Tell a friend to check out a show. Take a friend to a show. If you are not a member of the Gallo Center supporters, please consider it. Become of Friend of the center and there is a donor level for any budget. You will help change the way people look at Modesto and help create civic pride, as well as get a great concert or show and you will help our local economy grow with every visit.

EWJAZZ & BLUES

Hey folks, what’s new in town on the mu-sic horizon? Well the State Th eatre spearheaded by Sweet Sue Richardson is making some changes to help make the State more acces-sible to local musicians and artists. She has raised the issue of changing to a format of more local openers challenging the dictates from established music agencies. She also now has a dedicated email so bands can submit videos and promo material for con-sideration to the State as well as creating a subcommittee of local promoters and art-ists to have input into the process. Th e hope is that this creates a venue to support low cost shows for local artists, a mutual ben-efi t for all, yea! An example of this was seen with the recent Future Rock show with Kid Charlemagne, a great draw, Johnny and Kelly, Hair Kari, and others. It was pro-moted through the ModestoView channels and other promoters and had a good turn-out featuring some of our best local acts. So give Sue some love and support the State because I believe it is one of our best com-munity centers for the arts. Coming soon to the State: Asleep at the Wheel 8/24, Johnny Winters partner in crime Rick Derringer comes through 9/7, Leo Kottke 10/12, and my favorite of all time Dan Hicks & Th e Hot Licks, featuring the Lickettes, on10/12. Call the State (209) 527-4697, or check out www.thestate.org And the mighty John Griswold of Samba Arts Group continues to blend quality music and our demographic to a nice en-vironment for some social lubrication with dancing and cocktails at diff erent venue. Call John 491-7185, 247-3288, or Web: www.eArtsNews.com. Another family friendly all-age venue for jazz and popular music is at the Barkin’ Dog Grill in downtown Modesto. Th e Dog serves up aff ordable food in a nice casual setting.  Barry McGuire

It has been nearly fi ft y years since Barry McGuire shocked the music world with his surprise hit “Eve of Destruction”.  Th is song, loaded with angst, fear and worry was a #1 hit in September of 1965, was a big departure from the songs of the New Christy Minstrels.  Barry joined the Min-strels  in 1962 and went solo in ’65. Barry recorded and performed throughout the ’60 with members of the Byrds, Mamas and the Papas, the Association and many more writhing songs like Green, Green and oth-ers.   Barry played the critically acclaimed lead “Claude”   in the Broadway smash hit HAIR.  In 1970, Barry hit bottom and discovered Christianity and a whole new path and life opened for Barry.  He tours and performs with many of his 60s friends today and takes his amazing story on the road called “Trippin’ the ‘60s” with former Byrd John York.  Th is show will be Aug 24 at the Seasons at 7 pm. Th is is a FREE event and will be benefi tting Hope Haven Inter-national.     Let’s meet Barry McGuire:ModestoView: What do you think was the biggest change that came out of the 60s?Barry McGuire: Without a doubt the tra-ditional family infrastructure was deeply damaged producing single mothers who gave birth to a house full of children, with each one having a diff erent father.

MV: Did you ever expect the Eve of De-struction to be such a big hit?Barry: Absolutely not!   I really liked what it had to say, but I had no idea it was go-ing to strike the American psyche the way it did.   As a result of “Eve’s” popularity, I thought we were going to change the world, but then “Hang On Sloopy” took “Eve’s” place as the number one tune in the nation, so our social awareness was short-lived to say the leastMV:  What was your most memorable per-formance during the 60s?Barry: Without a doubt, performing the male lead with the original Broadway cast

Trippin the 60s with McGuireBy Chris Murphy

of “Hair” on Broad-way was the most fun I had during that entire decade.MV:   Which one of your songs as most withstood the tests of time?   Out of all the songs recorded Barry:  In the sixties, “Eve of Destruction” is probably more valid today than it was when it charted in the summer of ‘65.   If anyone would like to hear an updated ver-sion of the tune with new lyrics written by Phil Sloan, the original author, they can go to youtube.com and type Eve 2012 into the Search engine.MV:  Is there a event from the 60s that you wish you could do over?  Barry: Not really.  Most of life is just learn-ing what not to do, and if you survive the experience, (which many of my friends didn’t) then you can look back and think, “Man, was that the stupidest thing I’ve ever done or what, I never want to do that again.”  It’s all a learning curve.MV:  What advise would you give to people that wish they had grown up in the 60s? Barry: Well, like my friend, Owen Orr used to say, “Most people have one foot in tomorrow and the other foot in yesterday, and they’re urinating all over today.”  So my advice to all is, “Just live in the moment giv-ing it all of our energy and attention.  Th is present moment is the only place we can actually do something that makes a diff er-ence.”MV:   Describe your perfect idea of a day now.  Barry:  Once again, my idea of a perfect day is when I can address each unfolding frame of time as a sacred experience, knowing it has never happened before and will never happen again.  If I can stay ‘in the moment’ from the time I open my eyes in the morn-ing until I close them in the evening, that for me would be the perfect day.  Oh yeah, and I do love my backyard garden, and I spend as many moments in it as I can.

This event will be a benefi t for Hope Haven InternationalHope Haven International Ministries (HHIM) is a leader for refurbishing, manufactur-ing, and distributing wheelchairs to children and adults in desperate need around the world. Healthcare professionals and volunteers participate in global distributions to ensure proper fi t of the wheelchairs. Wheelchairs are sponsored by individuals and partnering agencies, such as Rotary Clubs, to deliver the gift of mobility. Over 90,000 wheelchairs have been delivered since HHIM’s inception in 1994.Lonny Davis of Hope Haven West is promoting the Barry McGuire event and just returned from Oaxaca, Mexico on July 30th. Here are some of this thoughts. “Fresh from a distribution of 200 pediatric wheelchairs, my mind is fi lled with images of kids and families who have just had their lives dramatically changed as a result of receiving the gift of mobility. Parents weeping for joy with the realization that their child will have opportunity for education, socialization and access to the community previously unavailable. Kids dancing in their chairs with the realization that they may now move themselves for the fi rst time in their lives. A community rallied around disabled children, service organizations (Rotary Clubs) banded together to provide assistance to the poorest of the poor and serve “the least of these”.

EWINTER

Mayor MarshBy Chris Murphy

Garrad Marsh was born and raised in Modesto. His family arrived here in the early 1900s farming land in North Modes-to.  Garrad served in the US Navy with Top Secret clearance on nuclear submarines and later attended MJC and UC Berkeley (Go Bears!) earning both BA and Masters Degrees. He has brought his love of com-munity and his expertise back to Modesto aft er college.  He and his family have creat-ed a successful bowling business that began in 1959 and serves as President and CEO of McHenry Bowl, employing over 50 people. He is experienced in the entertainment and sporting industry as well as community service and volunteerism.  He was active raising a family with his wife Dallas and has 4 kids and 5 grandkids. While promot-ing and running a business and managing property.  His goal was to put his business experience and love of Modesto to work in his role as the Mayor or Modesto.  He came into offi ce during a very challenging time, and while Modesto faces challenges, Modesto also has the opportunity to be-come an amazing city.    How will this all happen?  Let’s get to know Mayor Marsh:ModestoView: Modesto has many of the same challenges of other cities, but what do we need do to diff erently to make us a win-ning city!Mayor Marsh: More than anything, I think that Modesto, its citizens and business leaders, need to recognize how wonderful this city is.  It is about our perception of ourselves.  I have lived in Honolulu, Berkeley, Vir-ginia, and Connecticut. I have visited every state except Alaska.  I have travelled to nearly 100 countries.  While there are many great communities in the world, this is the one where I want to live.  We have a great, friendly city because of its sense of com-munity, its vibrant range of the arts, and our agriculture.  It is about our churches

and places of worship, civic organizations, non-profi ts, and so many individuals who volunteer and work together to make this community better. We do have problems that if solved will make us even better.  One is, we need more law enforcement.  We must have a safe (saf-er) community to attract jobs and business, to thrive, to have a better quality of life.  I will be working hard this next year or two to fi nd ways to make this happen.

We need to improve our level of education - this needs to be a community-wide pro-ject.  It can be accomplished by partnering to develop tutor or mentoring programs, encouraging parents to become involve in their children’s and grandchildren’s educa-tion,   working to develop a volunteer base at every school.   Education is strongly cor-related to our standard of living, to wage earning and to having a workforce that em-ployers want and need.MV: How important are the arts and en-tertainment for a successful downtown Modesto? MM: Th e cultural aspects of the city core are of utmost importance to not only a suc-cessful downtown but a vibrant communi-ty.  Even more important though is bring-ing downtown housing into the mix.  With activity you have a level of safety, a level of liveliness that changes the downtown into a 24 hour area, not one that is devoid of people aft er work.  Our downtown is the best in the valley; housing will make it even better.

MV:  Modesto is known around the world as the home of American Graffi ti, how should we take this to the next level and re-ally make it a global calling card?MM: Modesto is American Graffi ti.  We need to have this as a signifi cant theme when looking at attracting visitors.  Our Kiwanis Club rescued our June activities; we need to help them to stay successful and to fi nd ways to expand on their activities.  Most people do not know why Cannery Row of Monterey is signifi cant, but they still visit it.  People do not need to know about the movie “American Graffi ti” but with classic cars drawn here, people will visit Modesto.  We’ve taken the fi rst steps toward making us Graffi ti USA, but we have much more that can and should be done. MV:  What was one of your most memo-rable experiences growing up in Modesto?MM: Almost all of my early experiences centered around my family and one of our bowling alleys.  My Dad worked 7 days a week, home for dinner and back to work.  So I spent most of my free time at Modesto Bowl.  Most aft ernoons, I would join my

Grandmother Kewin for an extra-thick chocolate milkshake (made with old-fash-ioned way with vanilla ice cream and choc-olate syrup) at the lunch counter.    By the time I was teen, it was riding my bike, way out in the country to McHenry Bowl.  But if I could pick one experience, it was when I was playing a game of pinball, something I grew up doing.  I had fi gured out that if put the game legs up on my toes I could con-trol the game better, hence winning more free plays.  My Dad caught on to what I was doing and came over and leaned on the machine with all of his weight and casually carried on a conversation with me as I gri-maced.  Never again did I put the game on my toes. MV:   If you could speak with one other

world leader for inspiration and direction, who would it be?MM: Hillary Clinton.  MV:  What do you think your most chal-lenging issue has been since taking offi ce and what are you doing to overcome and complete it.MM: While there have been a variety of pressing matters, from the budget to em-ployee negotiations, from MID issues to SIFA to concerns from citizens, but the most challenging issue has been fi nding the time to move my goals forward.  How-ever, now that the budget in completed and several of the other matters are stabilized, I see that I will be better able to allot the time needed to move my agenda forward. MV:  Describe your perfect Modesto day.MM: All perfect days start with my wife, Dallas.  Cooking breakfast together and reading the Modesto Bee over coff ee (me) and tea (Dallas) as we do the crossword – in ink – together.  Th en spending the day outside, maybe at one our great parks, rid-ing our bikes, stopping by McHenry Bowl to check-up on things.  Dining together with some of our family or friends at one of our local restaurants.  Off to the Gallo Center to see “YES Company” perform.  Th en fi nishing with a glass of wine down-town aft er the performance.  MV:  Bowling is the classic retro sport, do you think that this classic spirit can be ap-plied to other things here in Modesto?MM: I think Modesto is a classic city.  We have parks throughout our city, the Gallo Center, our own ball team – the Nuts, MoBand, Picnic at the Pops, the Mansion and Museum, the original Graffi ti cruise – I could go on and on.   We have it, we need the world to know it.  MV:   How many perfect games have you bowled?MM: I have bowled 11 perfect (300) games.  Also, I have two 800 series’ (a more diffi cult feat.) MV:   What one thing would you want each person in Modesto to do if you could ask them?MM: Every person can help to make Modesto better in some way.  If someone sees something that is not a good as it can

August’s Here! By Matty Comer

Wow, I can’t believe August is already upon us! We have been so busy lately, that nobody seems to have the time and take a nice long deep breath. The Modesto Music scene is incredible friends and I have this soundtrack of our local troubadours coursing through my mind all the time. We, as The A.R.S., have made a conscious decision to only play local music at our shows. Everything you hear before, during, and after our shows is consistently our own talent! We encourage people to ask who that art-ist was, and where anyone can find access to his or her music. Who ever the musi-cian might be from Big Earl’s LOW CASH BLUE’S to that old Oakdale boy Willy Tea singing about that old Ford van, the story-tellers and songwriters truly amaze me as well as most who lend a ear to listen.August 10: Tim Allen Tenth Street Plaza 7-9 pm - All ages, bring a lawn chair

be, rather than just complain they should help to fix it.  Volunteer for a school, a non-profit, Love Modesto or the count-less of other ongoing community efforts.  Get involved.  Do not expect others or government to fix everything.  Making our community the best it can be should be everyone’s job. MV: Final Final: Beatles or Stones?MM: Since I cannot say “both,” I would like to preface my answer.  I have gone to three Stones’ tour concerts.  Their gritti-ness and variety continue to make them the best.  But of any set of work that most help me grow, I think the Sgt. Pepper al-bum was it.  Given that, the Beatles.

So this month I have a few things to talk about. First of all one of the biggest topics of conversation this month as per usual this time if the year is the annual X-Fest event. For the 2nd year in a row we get a metal stage at X-Fest. Despite some controversy concerning bands on this stage and the vot-ing process that was held for the coveted spots, this is an epic stage with local bands such as American Witch, Cursed, Forever Obscured, Blackwoods and of course 2011 Mama Award winners Nothing But Losers among others. Th is year’s metal stage is def-initely one of the best stages ever booked at X-fest.  Another topic of interest is the return of the band Sworn to Th e Black featuring for-mer members of the band SEIP and now featuring former And All Was Lost singer Kirk Salazar. Aft er a short break from the scene these local heavyweights return to

the scene August 17th at Th e Clarion Hotel here in Modesto with such bands as Cursed, Blackwoods, Brutal Innocence from Los Banos, and Forever Obscured. Th is should be one of the best shows of the year. And Finally our last topic this month is the highly successful US Tour of Modesto locals Better Left Unsaid & Warpath As-sassins. BLU, regular touring veterans did something rare in our scene they brought out one of their favorite home town metal bands Warpath Assassins. “I could get used to this!!” said WPA bassist Crusher via text message when asked how the bands 1st tour was going. With stops in Southern CA, Arizona, New Mexico & Texas these two bands killed it 209 style!!Th at’s it for me this month as always “Keep one foot in the gutter and one fi st in the gold!! “

Randy Taylor-Weber

Randy Taylor-Weber is a music producer, songwriter & owner of ‘Galaxy Freestyle Records’ records. In the late 90’s he pro-duced “In a Dream” by Jossette and later covered by Rockell hit # 1 in over 25 states. Till this day he continues his music career unleashing new singles and promoting events. Interview:I’ve played the piano since I was 7 years old, as I grew up I got more attached to music, it made me want to absorb everything about the music industry. Many people don’t know I Do’s in my high school years. When I got my fi rst job, I started selling key-boards and we’d gather crowds in the store, people constantly would tell me ‘hey you should put a record out’. I thought it was a great idea, so we created ‘Galaxy Freestyle Records’ From there we had over 15 recording art-ists on the label at one time. A song that I wrote and produced, called “In a Dream” by Jossette and later covered by Rockell, hit # 1 in over 25 states. At one point my co-producer (Lenny “Linus” Douglas) and I were working on remix tracks for Usher, Pink, Alicia Keys & more. Th e music indus-try changed a lot during the 2000’s and mu-sic was turning more urban and hip-hop. With us being a dance-oriented label, it was really hard to stay afl oat in the music business. In 2011, I was seeing how dance music started making a comeback, so I de-cided to come out with a new song called “Take me back to Vegas” that features my newest artist ‘Mogli’. Tell us about your past single & most re-sent?Th e biggest song by far has been “In a Dream” by Jossette & Rockell, other nota-ble tracks were“Forever” sung by our 3 girl group Emotion in Motion. Boogie your Body was sung by Modesto/Newman’s own “Daisey”. Other artists included Julissa, Sabrina, Yolanda and more. Currently we’re working with Mogli for “Take me Back to Vegas” and

Lina Santiago on future tracks. How did you come up with the idea for “Take me back to Vegas”!I’ve been working in the nightlife scene for the past 6 years, and I met Santiago Acosta, aka‘Mogli’. He started helping me promote events in the south bay area and then had an opportunity of a lifetime in September 2010. We got to fl y anywhere in the United States for 30 days through a JetBlue promo-tion and as we ventured across the U.S. and I found this guy had a passion for music that didn’t go un-noticed. He then showed me his take of the song “Take me back to Vegas”. I felt there was a lot of promise in the song, except that it really needed to be produced to the next level. Lenny Lines Douglas and I started the song from scratch and recreated the music and Mogli supplied the lyrics, and the rest is history Where has your New single “Take me back to Vegas” has taking you? It’s been opening up tons of new doors along with renewing the old relationships I’ve had with radio stations in the past. I’ve learned that everyone in the music indus-try is a tight group knit of people. Th e new footprints being set are defi nitely paving the way for future projects What keeps you working so hard?Knowing that you can do anything you put your mind to, as long as you believe in it. Sometimes you gotta sleep 2 hours a night, just to fi nd what you are looking for. My passion for music will always be there. My family and girlfriend are the driving touch-es to everything Any regrets or setbacks? We always learn each time we get a step further in this crazy music industry. When we had the #1 song we thought we had it made, and just didn’t take care of things the way we should have. So now with our return to the radio waves, were being a lot more careful and focused.

I hear there is word of yet another single?Yes we have a second song ready to go, about 80% completed. With the success of “Take me back to Vegas”, were holding back a little bit as that song continues to move across the United States

Where can we purchase your music?Anything can be purchased at itsgalaxy.com Any one inspire you? Always my mom, son, family and girlfriend Music breeds life...

It’s A RacquetBy Efren Martinez

Aft er sitting down with Mark Fairchilds from Th e Modesto Fitness and Racquet Club, I quickly realized that “Modesto’s Open” for fi tness. Mark is a retired profes-sional tennis player and has competed and won some the best tennis matches around the world and made quite a name for him-self in the tennis world. Mark has had wins over such great tennis players as Pete Sam-pras, Carl Chang, Karel Demunk, Patrick Kuhnen and Jean Phillipe Fleurian, whom he beat in what Mark refers to as the hard-est match of his life. Th e match was played in the South of France in front 5,000 French Fans with just a couple of American players in the audience. He was up 5-4 in the 3rd set when the match was called due to dark-ness. It was a sleepless night for Mark as his mind wandered with thoughts of serving for this match with a lot of money on the line and if he pulled it off , it would be his

biggest win of his career. As you can imag-ine, he didn’t sleep well that night. He went on the court the next morning to a raucous French crowd who wanted to see him blow this match. By the time it was all over, Mark had played one of the greatest games of his life and held serve at love to win the match in avery hostile environment. Make no mistake Modesto View readers, the game of tennis demands that you are physically, technically and especially men-tally fi t to succeed.  Th is is why I decided to give it a go at a Modesto City Park. It gave me quite a workout and I quickly decided that tennis is more then just a racquet. So, if you are enjoying what I’m serving here, I invite you to take advantage of one of the many free tennis courts in Modesto. Mark may have retired professionally, but he’s still got game and enjoys teaching his skill to the many folks and kids in our com-

munity at Th e Modesto Fitness & Racquet Club. You can meet and greet Mark at Th e Modesto Open on August 17th through the 19th and you will not be disappointed! Th is tournament brings out some of the best tennis players from all around and with at least $3,000 dollars worth of prize money for both men and woman up for grabs; it will be exciting.

Here are some fi tness tips you’ll want to consider before hitting the tennis court.1. Get your game on before it heats up or when the suns going down, night tennis is available at certain locations.2. Make sure you have the proper tennis shoes or it may result in an injury.3. Hydration in the key to any sport and drink plenty of water hours prior to your game as well as have some available on the court.4. Pick your tennis battles wisely; a ten-nis ball can come at you anywhere from 20 mph to 100 mph.5. Warm up before a match and stretch before and aft er.6. Play for fun! Grab your partner and play for the health of it.

Focus: The Quiet MindPart 1: What is it?

From the moment we awake to the day in the morning to the moment we surrender consciousness at night and sleep, how many moments among the infi nite string be-tween waking and sleeping did we not have something to think about?  Do you remem-ber a moment where you weren’t thinking about several things at once?   And yet a quiet mind does not need to be thought free.  Instead, a quiet mind is achieved with one thought lives with nothing else but the single moment containing a single action being carried out is the only thing that ex-ists.  Even meditation is not begun with a blank slate but by acknowledging thoughts as they occur and not attaching the mind to them, allowing them to leave as they en-tered.  In Yoga, the focus is form, posture, breath, all culminating in a single focus: listening to the body.  Your cow or cat posture will suff er if you’re thinking about how many

loads of laundry you need to do that night while trying to remember if you paid the water bill that month.  Th is is true for any other activity that requires a quiet mind like T’ai Chi Ch’uan or mountain climbing or cliff diving.  So how does one achieve a quiet mind?  Are there steps to achieving a quiet mind?  We discuss that in the next ar-ticle, “Focus: Th e Quiet Mind Part 2: How do you start?

We “Boomers” are not retiring in the old sense of the word. Instead we are asking, “is there something I’ve always wanted to do but never had time for?” We are discov-ering and rediscovering our true passions. How can you fi nd what you’re passionate about? Here are some suggestions:• Is there something you already love do-ing? Do you have a hobby, or something you loved doing as a child, but never con-sidered it as a possibility?• Do you spend hours reading about some-thing you love? For myself, when I get pas-sionate about something, I’ll read about it for hours on end. I’ll buy books and maga-zines. I’ll spend days on the Internet fi nd-ing out more. • Nothing comes to mind right away? Well, get out a sheet of paper, and start writing down ideas. Anything that comes to mind, write it down. Look around your house, on your computer, on your bookshelf, for in-spirations, and just write them down.• Ask Others. See what others have discov-ered as their passions. Look all over the In-ternet for ideas• Give it a try & never quit trying. Can’t fi nd your passion at fi rst? Th ought you found your passion but you got tired of it? No problem! Start over again and fi nd a new passion. Th ere may be more than one passion in your lifetime, so explore all the possibilities. Th at is the beauty about re-tirement, you can try new things. I know two guys that have redefi ned retire-ment. Casey Campbell and Doug Houser are brother-in-laws and best friends, and have went into retirement with great drive and passion for what they love.Casey loves motors and loves to go fast. When he retired in 2007 he decided to do Landspeed Racing. Casey, his Campbell Racing Crew and a 1971 Chevy Pickup have been many times to El Mirage Dry Lake Bed Racing and three times to Bonneville Salt Flats Speed Week. Th is year Casey and his son Tim are do-ing Circle Track Racing at Madera Speed-way. Th ey restored the car and Casey built

Life Begins At Retirement

the motor for this new adventure into the world of racing. When he is not on the tracks he is building the next race motor.Doug retired this year, and rediscovered his passion for art. He entered three pieces into the Stanislaus County Fair and won Best of Show, a 1st and a 3rd. Wow not bad for just starting to show his beautiful art work. He will soon be opening Douglas ArtaFacts Collection at his ranch in Ceres, where he and his wife Pam will periodically be show-ing and teaching their art and craft s.Th ese two men have embraced retirement with their passions. A lesson for all of us to enjoy all of the experiences that we can in life, irrespective of age. In fact the retire-ment years make that more possible, be-cause we have the time. Retirement is the key to the opening of a new door, all one needs to do is to be posi-tive and take the necessary steps to follow your passions.Soon there will be a road trip to a New Mexico Art Show for Doug and driving Route 66 for Casey. Everyone has talent. Some discover it soon-er than others. If you haven’t uncovered yours yet, it is time you did.Debra CampbellCare Connections - Car-ing for our Senior CommunityFollow me on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/CareConnectionsDeb-raCampbell#!/CareConnectionsDeb-raCampbell

OCTOBER 20, 2012 | 6PMThe Seasons, 945 McHenry Avenue, Modesto, CAlifornia

STANISLAUS HEALTH FOUNDATION PRESENTS A

August is here and our time for school is fast approaching! Whether you’re in 1st grade or 11th grade going back to school is a big deal that is sure to fi ll you with anx-ious butterfl ies and nerves. One good tip: go into the year with a positive attitude that is open to trying new things at your school! Th e best thing you can do is get involved with your friends and clubs at school to meet lots of new friends. Th e beginning of the school year is open to many opportunities and changes and there are many clubs on campus that are great to join. Are you really interested in something that doesn’t have a club on campus (maybe horseback riding, oldies music, baking, or recycling) and you want to meet other friends that have the same interests? Start your own club! Go to your administrators at the beginning of the year and get the ball rolling! Th is is a great way to get to know your school, have fun, and experience a role in leadership that may be entirely new to you.Sports, clubs at school and general in-volvement in your community are great ways to jump-start your year. Are you in high school and looking for a new way to spice up your spirit attire to support your school?! My personal favorite accessory on rally day is the one and only tutu! It’s easy to make and a huge fashion statement that will have your friends asking where you got

it, when in actuality, it was a homemade DIY project!

What You’ll Need:Tulle: One spool each of whatever colors you need. If you are doing one color, do two spools.Elastic: 1/2 or larger.ScissorsRibbon

How to Make Your Customized Tutu:1 First, measure your hips, cut, and tie your elastic to fi t your hips. 2. Take out your tulle! For example, since I’m a student at Modesto High I use crim-son, black, and a hint of sparkly tulle for some extra fun! (other ideas are silver, blue, and white for Downey; Red, white, blue, and sparkle for Beyer..etc) 3. Cut each strip of tulle at 16. Aft er tying, this gives the tutu a length of about 6-7 long.4. Take one of each of your colors of tulle and put them together. Th en you will tie a knot around the elastic. Don’t tie it too tight. Make sure you can still move the tulle easily. Th en you will tie a knot again in the other direction. Having each tie go a dif-ferent direction allows for more fl uff in the tutu.5. Th en slip this beauty on and make sure to wear at all major events to support your school!

Back to School Modesto- August 7Be safe on the roads out there. Most of the kids in Modesto will be going back to school earlier than ever this year. The new school clothes, the reams of binder paper, the calcula-tors will be n the backbacks as kids go back in search ofhigher education. Donate to your teachings need list and make sure that our kids have every chance to me successful.

School is Fast Approaching!

Modesto Rotary Club aka MoRo is known for its many community-oriented eff orts, among these the popular Senior Stride event that began in 1991. “It’s a Sen-ior-oriented fi tness and information outing on September 14th that’s designed for lo-cal seniors (55+) who are looking for a fun, interactive and active experience,” explains Monica Ojcius, Co-Chair of the Rotary event. Th is year’s goal is to have 500 walkers, and it’s become a family aff air, with seniors re-turning every year to be a part of the fun. “We even have father and son and mother and daughter pairs walking together now,” Ojcius says. For a $1.00 registration fee, participants get all kinds of great stuff , including a Sen-

ior Stride T-shirt, a tote bag with goodies, healthy snacks and drinks, and a ticket to enter into the raffl e. Plus the fun and cama-raderie of fellow seniors walking in a lovely area. Funding for the event is primarily garnered through sponsorships received from local businesses. Th is year’s Presenting Spon-sors are TSM Insurance Company and Evergreen Nursing & Rehabilitation Care Hospital. “We also partner with Salva-tion Army, American Medical Response, Community Hospice, E & J Gallo Winery, Mercer Foods, MOCSE, City of Modesto, McHenry Bowl, MID, Sign Designs, Mid Valley Productions and more,” Ojcius shares. “We’re looking for items to place into the tote bags each senior will receive, raffl e prizes, and people who want to par-ticipate.”Ojcius is proud of how MoRo’s Senior Stride committee of volunteers puts the entire event together. “Th rough collabora-tions within our membership we provide the event coordination, publicity materials, mailings, sell sponsorships, get signage, se-cure entertainment, food and raffl e dona-tions, and security.”

Senior Stride is a great opportunity for you to encourage seniors to step up for health and join in a fun event.
